So this is something that I would really like to do but have put it off for a few reasons.
I decided that a Nexus 7 car install is the best option for having Android in the car. At first I considered buying an App Radio 3 and using AR Unchained to just mirror my phone on the head unit. But after learning that Pioneer's AR3 head units are less then stellar I decided to abandon that option. Besides, who wants to connect their phone to their stereo everytime they get in the car?
Next I considered buying one of those Chinese made head units with Android 4.2 but for some reason they don't seem to make any that fit my car. Not to mention that after seeing some pretty decent reviews of them on this forum I still feel leery about buying one.
So that leaves me with the only option of installing a tablet in my car.
Right now everything in my car is completely stock. I figured the best way to connect the tablet to my car's speakers is through the replacement of the factory stereo through an aftermarket one, possibly the Pioneer DEH-80PRS which I'm currently considering.
This poses a few problems, the current stereo is a double din so I have the space to work with. However I would have relocate the aftermarket stereo somewhere else. Either behind the tablet like some others have done or in the glove box, something I really don't want to do.
But by doing this I would lose access to the physical volume control on the head unit, I'm trying to figure a way around this but I haven't come to any reasonable conclusions as of yet. I do have steering wheel controls so this is an option, however it doesn't really help much when you have a passenger that want's to control the volume.
Next is the sound quality, I was really hoping that I could plug the Nexus 7 in the head unit through the USB port and have audio transfer that way like with an iPod. But from what I've researched online it seems that this is not possible? Atleast not without a custom ROM anyways, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Next issue is power, I've heard alot of problems keeping the tablet charged in the car. Is there a way to keep it charged even while using it?
If I opt for a DAC that plugs into the Nexus 7 either through USB or the headphone jack, how will I keep the DAC powered?
Thanks
Wow, not one reply...
I've thought this over and over with the plethora of android devices that hang around my house. The best way I think, is to buy a midrange amp with 4chans and run a splitter from the 1/8inch jack.

Keep in mind that physically installing the tablet in the car without an option for removal will most likely expose it to extreme heat and cold which is highly detrimental to the battery health!
Throwing out bad batteries is terribly damaging to then environment in the case you would like to get a new device also.
Please consider having a stand/deck/clamp that allows you to remove it when you leave the car with you; as this will prolong the life of the battery and keep toxic garbage out of landfills!

Which version Nexus 7? 2012 or 2013, TIMUR's Rom seems to be the one everyone is using for a fixed install. I am in process of doing a fixed installation for a 2012 Nexus 7 in my weekend fun car, I am using Timurs Rom, I have a Direct HD Tuner and an app a guy on Rootzwiki made for it, I am using a Behringer UCA202 USB DAC to handle the audio.
I too have the Volume control challenge and I don't have the steering wheel controls, the other piece is with the HDTuner, the audio bypasses the Nexus for the tuner so I needed some sort of adjustment. I am still working it out, but many opt for the Clarion EQS746, and I have seen several other brands that seem to be the same..
I am curious how you plan to handle all the integrated info on your radio (Trip, Oil Life, etc) I know that is a stopping poitn for me on my 2007 Malibu MAXX SS, not sure how I duplicate that info and I think if I took the radio out completely I would have other issues

I'm planning on buying the 2013 version. Timur's rom isn't available for the 2nd gen Nexus 7 yet.
I'm not worried about losing the driver information center in the Malibu. If I really wanted to keep it I could buy a metra double din dash kit that includes the driver information center module but I don't feel like spending $240.

I don't really live in an area that has wild temperature swings. My car's windows are already tinted and I use a shade on the front windshield so I'm not too worried about it.
I'm more worried about thievery, making it removable especially in a 2006 Malibu would require some sort of modification to the bezel.

I'm doing a removable install in my 2012 impreza.
2013 LTE model
Timurs fi kernel + services (awesome and worth the 43.00, free in may iirc)
Uca202 usb dac
Amp will be alpine ktp445u (fosgate pbr 300x4 would be awesome too but I already have the alpine)
Joycon exr for steering wheel controls.
No need for aftermarket deck, unless you want fm (I haven't listened to fm in 10+ years)

I wasn't aware that Timur's rom was available for the 2013 Nexus 7 yet, I thought it wasn't going to be available til May?
The aftermarket head unit makes it's easier to integrate into my car's audio system without having to buy a whole lot of extras. The car has 104k miles, I'm not sure I wan't to do alot of modding to it at this point.
Plus, the head unit would serve it's purpose when I have passengers that wan't to connect their phone/mp3 player to listen to their own music. You can't do that with a tablet, atleast not that I know of...correct me if I'm wrong.
I'd also have bluetooth hands free calling with the head unit, not that I'd ever use it anyways.

I have factory hands free and I only use it occasionally (and I drive a stick!) I may get a parrot kit or similar, but undecided so far. The uca202 has an additional input that could be used for it. You can pick up the dac and amp for about 150 on Amazon and not have to worry about stashing it somewhere.
I can't argue your points about passengers, I usually just music we all like anyway.
Timurs kernel is up and running, there is a thread in general I believe. You have to pay now, 35euros with WiFi Mac (kernel linked to that device only) or 50euros w/o mac.
I was using it on the WiFi version, but returned it because Verizon had the lte on sale last weekend for 49.99! I contacted timur and he changed it up for me from wifi to lte within hours!. Been a few updates so far and he sends out emails with notification and a change log.
I think it was worth the 43.00 I spent for it, allows me to test everything, and get most of my stuff figured out.
I'm just stuck on a mount that would look good, I don't want to hack up my dash, because in 2 years I will probably update to something newer. I bought a cheap snap on case, but it fits too well!
All together I have spent only about 230 including the tablet. (I had the amp installed already)

$230? That's all you spent?! Perhaps maybe I'm over thinking this, that $49 you spent for the Nexus 7 LTE, obviously that was a two year contract right?
The reason why I'm thinking of buying just WiFi version is because I have a GSIII with a grandfathered unlimited data plan back from 2010 when Verizon was still offering unlimited data. My idea was to just tether that to the tablet considering that it's unlimited anyways. What solution did you use to keep your tablet powered while in use? It seems like that's the biggest PITA from what I've read.
Would you mind taking some pictures of your install if it's not any trouble?
Thank
This is what my dash looks like to give everyone an idea of what I'm dealing with,

I'm trying to figure out what I can do to mount the tablet infront of the bezel rather then behind it because it's too much of a hassle to take that bezel off.

I can post pics, it will probably be a few weeks though, I'm waiting on some warranty service behind the climate controls so I don't want to install only to have the dealer screw it up.
67 shipped w/tax for nx7 on contract. (If you have unlimited probably should get wifi only)
42 joycon exr
30 for usb dac
30 in cables
15 for power supply (100w converter)
5 for hard plastic case from China
12.50 for hdpe to build a box behind for storage
43 timurs kernel
10 gnd loop isolator
10 for a amp turn on delay
Plus a few more small things i can't remember.
In comparison I was going to get an appradio3, but that was almost 600 after everything i would have needed, plus the mirroring was flaky even with official adapters for my note 2
Timurs kernel + otg charge cable + power supply = charging nx7 + usb peripherals
I plan to build a box the same size the factory radio, put a spacer between it and the hard plastic case and I will just snap the tablet into it, plug in the cable and go. Timurs kernel lets you hotplug audio devices so no rebooting required.

Search for subaru nexus 7 install, there is one where they built an acrylic case, mounted a case to it and clipped in nx7. I plan to do the same, only the case will be on the outside so I can easily remove it.

5.1 surround sound setup
I'm doing similar in a 04 f150 .. Instead of my headphone jack I'm using the HDMI audio. Have a HDMI audio extractor, that has digital audio outs , I'm running the fiberoptic audio to a small surround sound decoder, 5.1 surround, the decoder has 6 sets of RCAs I'm running to the amplifiers. I'm using a small Bluetooth keyboard with track pad to control volume and what not.. The hdmi audio extractor has a HDMI out put also so I can add a monitor or a projector for a mobile drive-in experience. Between the tab, the slimport, HDMI audio splitter, surround decoder and keyboard, I have about 320-350 invested. Not bad considering the resolution, the navigation, and everything else you'd spend well over a grand or more with any alpine and not have near the capabilities. And of course I have unlimited data with sprint on my phone so a WiFi hotspot keeps the tablets fed with data

I am using my tablet in my Tundra . I am looking for a mount that I can use to place my tablet in the dash of my tundra. Have seen some installs in some stereo magazines. This sure beats the heck out of after market stereos.
unless you go the custom route then i just don't see it happening yet for the a500. if you were going ipad or ipad 2 or maybe the xoom or transformer, if their popularity increases.
i could be wrong though and if someone finds something for the a500 then please post it.

I'm a new poster so I can't post links. I found a website called tablet-holder.com These are a little pricey. I've been thinking about getting one. They do have vehicle specific mounts as well. Not sure what year your Tundra is. I know for Dodge Rams, they only have for up to 2005 models.
Using the blue tooth, I am able to listen to any sound track on the Acer wirelessly. The truck has volume controls on the steering wheel. So I am able to retain my hands free with my phone which is my hotspot.Truck also has factory XM radio. You can't get all of those functions with an Alpine or Pioneer without having to buy modules and antennae then you only have a seven inch screen and the colors are no where close to the quality of the Acer Iconia and price.
The acer is an addition to the hu, right? There are tons of features that we could get out of the tablet in the car. Ill prob be working on something once fall rolls in. Its too hot to do anything during the summer in az.

I am thinking about purchasing the Pebble SmartWatch. I am curious to if I will be able to connect the watch to my phone while my phone is connected to my truck's bluetooth radio or Bluetooth headset (one at a time). All the reviews i have seen shows it just playing through headphones or the phone's speaker, not through another bluetooth device. Anyone have any experience w/ the pebble watch? 150.00 is alot without confirming that it works.

I don't think the phone can maintain more than one bluetooth connection at a time. Though my car stereo can so I guess it is possible and just a software issue. Maybe there's an app out there or maybe a Dev could figure it out. BUT since a car stereo connects as a headset MAYBE it could connect to a second device as a data connection (Watch)?
I don't think it's available for the public yet, only shipping to "backers" at this point. Still says "Pre-Order"
My car doesn't have A2DP so I run 2 simultaneous connections and it works perfectly fine. One connection to the car's phone and another for audio through an A2DP device connected so I can listen to music as well as take calls from the car. The phone hands each off just fine. The N4 is perfectly capable of handling multiple Bluetooth connections at a time.

Th phone can be connected to two things at once. I have my Parrot Minikit Neo and also the HTC stereo stick connected at the same time. So when a call comes in, the Parrot will pick up the call and then when ended, my HTC Stereo stick will continue to play/stream from my phone.
I'm just running PA 3.1 and no audio add-ons/hacks. Using Poweramp and sometimes N7 player to play from my phone.
And I am a backer as well. I have the Grey one on order, and from my understanding, will be one of the last ones to be shipped because they begun shipping only the black pebbles at this point and is approx 30% done with it's backer rewards. So I'll probably get it in May lol.

Good to know that the phone can handle multiple connections at once!
I just added one of the watches to the cart to see ship time and it's stating a ship time of April-May. I think as a backer you will get it sooner. I'm not getting one, $150 is quite a bit but my wife cannot use her phone at work. It's tough for me to get a hold of her so I was thinking for her. She's an Apple user though so she may just wait and see what Apple releases this year.

For the love of everything that is holy I have been trying to find this solution for so long...
I'm basically looking for an Android compatible version of something like the Kensington LiquidAUX setup. For older cars that don't have built in bluetooth but DO have an auxillary in cable, this solution lets you plug the aux in cable into a bluetooth receiver and also gives you a remote that attaches to your steering wheel that can change music tracks. You can see what I mean from these pictures:

I have been searching and searching and searching and have never found anything that will accomplish this with an Android phone. I had privately always wondered if a Pebble watch could achieve this.
I got my pebble on Friday and have been playing with it all weekend . I do love it! I slapped on a skin protector and matte black. Oh and for those who reads the entire thread, I did initially order the grey one, but the colors especially the grey was going to take longer than the black ones, which were produced in abundance and was the first to be produced. Pebble offered to switch to black, which I did and I decided I wanted matte black skin which look awesome IMO. The glossy face looks off with the band. And I am looking at a few cuff bands to house this sucker!
Back to topic. So far the bt plays well with the phone. I can now control my music tracks using my V-Moda M-100's, and also my bt setup in my truck using an HTC Car Clip, which is plugged into my aux port on my head unit. That is paired up with my N4 for playing my tracks. Now I can use my Pebble to skip through tracks! Love it!! No need to wake the phone to swipe.
Also my parrot minikit neo works as well. No conflicts with any of them so far. I will report back if something happens lol.

Ran across this old thread randomly while reading about the Pebble, I know it's blatant necromancy but I felt compelled to post and mention that Kensington made a standard Android compatible version of that device, same name and everything. Only difference is that instead of having the 20 pin cable sticking out it has a USB port down there that will charge any old phone...
The thing is old as dirt and it's actually discontinued I think so good luck finding it, wasn't even meant for Android per se, I've been using mine for the better part of three years! Worked fine with my last dumb phone (a Sony Ericsson) as well as my last three Android phones. The only occasional issue is that it'll lose power if wiggled but that could just be the fault of my 2007 Civic's janky 12V port (never bothered to try it in another car). The brilliant part about this thing is really that wireless remote, I didn't even use that wheel bracelet it comes with, just Velcro'd it to a slot on my Civic's steering wheel and it damn near looks stock. I've no idea what kinda wireless protocol they use or whether it communicates with the phone or directly with the base, I'm pretty sure it's the latter...
There's lots of Bluetooth devices like this one meant to sit in the dash or discretely below it, some might even be better suited if your aux jack and 12V port aren't immediately adjacent (I've seen smaller devices) or if they're pretty hidden (the mic on the LiquidAux isn't great), but I've NEVER seen one with a wireless remote like this (they often don't even have any kinda music playback controls)... And I've looked around occasionally too cause I've got several friends with semi recent 2009-2011 cars without BT built in for whom this would be an awesome gift (plus I'd kinda like a backup, I'm gonna be stuck with my Civic for a few more years still!).
If anyone knows of an alternative I'm all ears, I guess something like the Pebble (not necessarily a $150 smartwatch) that can control playback while another device handles BT streaming would sorta work but it seems like a workaround... I've no idea why Kensington stopped making this thing, it was kinda ahead of it's time IMO since piping music over BT wasn't anywhere near as common or popular when it came out, Android was barely catching on and iOS BT support lagged dumb phones...
In fact I remember being mildly annoyed that my Sony Ericsson dumb phone fully supported the playback controls on the remote yet iOS on my IPod touch (2nd gen) only allowed play/pause but no track skipping (things like that soured me on iOS, that was the one and only Apple device I owned, tho I'm glad to have tried it out). There's tons of BT-less cars on the road for which this would be a perfect solution. Someone oughta petition Kensington to bring it back or put out a rip off thru Kickstarter... I remember paying like $45 for it during a CompUSA sale (before they first closed, yes it's really that old, pretty sure it preceded the iOS version), beats the heck out of replacing your stereo deck just for BT IMO.
So I'm pleased to announce that in my car install process, i took the plunge and broke into the guts of my device. I removed the buttons and soldered two leads off of each of the 3 buttons (power, volume up, volume down). I've tested them and they work with several feet of wire with a momentary button on the ends. I have a camry 2007 and will be using the steering wheel stock media buttons, but for anyone doing a car install i highly reccoment this even if you have to go out and spend a couple dollars to get you some custom butons.
Here is the "key flex cable" as it's called. the cable has a thin plastic film over it, I cut that off with a razor blade to remove those silver circles and expose the pcb.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-...n4_BajFA/w482-h642-no/IMG_20140121_122605.jpg
The hardest part of this is the soldering. PCB printed circuits aren't really meant to be soldered by hand, but this is obviously possible (and several people have done this in the nexus 7 2012 community).
each button consists of a copper ring surrounding the copper center, a lead will need to be soldered to each. Remember to use small solder, low heat, and tin your wires as well as the board before attempting a solder.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-...Cuk3EWwU/w856-h642-no/IMG_20140121_132321.jpg
These buttons are temporary, placeholders until i can crack into my cars steering wheel.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-...40hPyb3g/w856-h642-no/IMG_20140121_132301.jpg
I weighed all the options for "inputs", and tried more than a few. I tried the bluetooth headset (kit kat doesn't seem to be playing really nice with bluetooth devices), i tried the elemental kernal in hopes to incorperate some usb chargin/otg (but the kernal is just not there yet). This is the only option in my opinion to have a really practical method of having access to your hardware buttons of your device.
Also no reason to be afraid, worst case scenerio you ruin your cable, and i've found several replacements you can but online for 20$ ish. Worth the risk in my opinion! Be happy to answer any questions.
Also don't put stress on the solders, i reinforced them with some good ol hot glue straight onto the solder joint.
1/27/14 update Car Steering Wheel Button Soldering
here you see what appears to be a complicated circuitboard, made by machine, not meant for hand soldering... but we all know that's hogwash! these are resistive buttons, they all draw from the same power source adn when the button is depressed and the circuit completed each button has a unique resister associated with it that gives it a unique "voltage signiture" which is how the stock radio recognizes which is which. I of course used them just for their switch properties and bipassed the resistors all together.

all 6 wires (3 buttons)

Will follow this closely, I wanted to do the same but ended up running out of free time last summer, and now I'll be in school for the next 4 years
I'm excited to see the dash work ?
Sent from my sweet Nexus 7 (2013)
I actually had my Nexus opened last week but I didn't have the heart to attempt this.
I think I'm gnna give it a go when I can be bothered to take it out of the car again.
Thanks for this
I'm only stuck on getting the wires through my steering wheel. I soldered into the circuit board of my steering wheel controls... the only problem is since the previous controls were resistive buttons and not switches it has only 3 wires going through the spiral cable... i need 3 more. the wire harness has upwards to 9 empty pins so i'm thinking i can solder onto some of those for the extra 3 i need. But the ones that are there are working GREAT! And worst case scenerio i will but a few more momentary buttons and just put them somewhere inconspicuous in my center concole or maybe both! Don't be afraid, remember if you completely screw things up on the ribbon cable its 20-30 dollar mistake... yes not idea, but worth it for such complete automobile integration.
A long time ago I had an 02 maxima where I interfaced the steering wheel controls to control my Xbox.. What you can use is the swi-x interface.. It will generate I signals from the steering wheel. Now the question is if the nexus can support an IR usb dongle.

Ya there are a lot more options if your device supports usb otg, on of which that has been used with nexus 7 is the joycon module. HOWEVER, currently the nexus 7 2013 stock does not support usb otg+ charging at the same time, one or another yes. Timur has made a rom for the 2012 nexus 7 that takes care of that, but he opted to not support the new nexus 7. Flar made a kernal....elemental is what its called, and it does a lot of things but does not "FULLY" support usb charging+otg support. while you are plugged in, if your power source is cut off and turned back on (like it would in a car setting) then the tablet isn't charged anymore only otg support. ANYHOW this is part of the reason i had to hack into my device to get support steering wheel button support

hate to break it to ya, but bruce2728 [1] made a rom that supports usb hotplug (when ignition goes from ACC, to ON), and also double tap to wake while otg+charging is gonna be up on his kernel in a few days.
+1 on the joycon. i'm using it too but as a USB HID device.

Thats good to hear, any development is good news to me, doesn't take away from what i've done. If you read into timurs rom at all in the early stages it took quite a long time to get to what most would consider a "daily" piece of software. I have all the hope in the world for these innovations, but if my years of tinkering has in the custom android world has told me anything its that there will probably be some time yet before the wrinkles are fully ironed out.
Add to that that for FULL volume/on off button integration you would need to spend 40-60 bucks on a usb module, and then as i've seen some do with joycon you would have to go into keymapping and edit that.
I feel (as i'm sure many do) more comfortable modifying the hardware side of things (seeing as its so minor). Here's hoping though for more options for car integration.
seems to me otg+charge issues arent resolved yet.
however, its possible to use a qi charger + otg cable
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646657
Huh, i always heard inductive charging shut off data transfer, never tried it though. My big thing is any way i saw it i would be investing 50-100 (HALF THE VALUE OF MY TABLET!?!?!?!) for a qi charger, then the joycon module, just to basically extend the buttons. I went with the option that cost me just a couple bucks in solder and wire (which lets face it most of us modders have already).
On a happier note it looks Timur did go ahead and develop his same nexus 7 2012 kernal for the 2013. Sad news is in order to be part of the beta program he's requiring a very substantial dotation. But he is planning on may for free public release

and for all of you who don't know, timur has developed at least a few years to ironing out that google bug int he otg+charging. People love his stuff and it's basically built for a car install.
Nice work! Wow. I settled for GMD gesture control, but I could see how great it'd be to have multifunction steering wheel integration if you've got it. Seamless.
more recently i found a WONDERFUL xposed module (xposed additions) that allows me to remap EVERY SINGLE hardware key to do whatever. You can map single click, double click, and long click for each button. For the volume buttons i changed each of their long clicks to "go home" and "recent apps". Needless to say this has saved me even more trips to the screen

Ya he has been in beta testing for a few months now. Originally he was charging 60$ to be a part of his beta testing and now he's dropped it down to 40$. He was going to offer a free version but he went back on that and is sticking with the hefty fee of 40$ for now. He said he made little to no money on his work with the 2012.
I was able to get it for 20$ during a very brief promotion. I personally think 40 is asking way to much, I could barely bring myself to pull the trigger on 20. However being as far as I am into my install I had no choice. And I think at his asking price that's the only small group that will use his kernal. That said it is quite good and really is essential for a car build.
Thanks for the photos. I've bought a spare flex cable and will be doing something similar for my dash install

He made little money from it because I bet it was being shared amongst others so they wouldn't have to pay for it. No such thing as the honest system anymore.

Hi Guys
I'm about to purchase this unit https://www.amazon.com/Android-Loll...ie=UTF8&qid=1465622931&sr=8-4&keywords=joying
Just a couple of questions
Does it look good?
Can it be rooted?
And finally does it have usb dash cam support.
Thanks
I'm also looking at a similar unit from joying..... did you end up getting it?

Unfortunately with 97 views so far, no one can/will answer my questions.
I'm afraid to buy any unit at the moment until I get advice.
Suppose the question I should ask is for 250-300 dollars what's the best unit one can buy?
Thanks
That's how I feel. I've think I've ruled out the indash from the thread it seems there are a lot of bugs. The joying seems to be the most popular but not enough feed back from real world experience.

I am also still waiting and cannot decide which one to buy. I definitely want a unit which has Android 5.1 and is compatible with MTCD units so that I can flash Malaysk's ROM.
For me the question is, should I wait for 2GB RAM or not? Who knows how long we have to wait for that?

I'm in the same boat, so unfortunately, I don't have any answers to help either.
InDash is a good $150 more, but the internal components are much better. It seems to me the biggest issue with that unit is the software, so there are opportunities to fix those bugs. The community is smaller, but there is hope.
But is hope worth $150 bucks?
doctorman on here is a Joying reseller or something. He's pretty good at answering stuff. I sent him an email about a different question, and I got an Out of Office reply. Said he would be back Tuesday i think. So just wait a day or so, and I'm sure he'll give you the rundown.
as the others have said, In-Dash has way better hardware specs, but it is new, and those bugs can be fixed, but at the same time, they haven't sold that many units. In the In-Dash thread, people's order numbers were like #15, and they seemed to be somewhat sequential. So at some point they may decide they are not selling enough units to make it worthwhile to keep working on the software.
Pumpking and Joying have been in business for a long time, so they have more reasons to keep working on the software. Also check out RoadNavi.com, they have a pretty active forum, and a thread on here for the S160. Seems like support is pretty good.
Roadnavi website been down all day. Pumpking seems to have the most users or reviews that are positive on amazon...

Had to trim my bezel so not sure if it's actually true din size.
Bluetooth speakerphone using the radio builtin mic works pretty good, just as good as my pioneer. Call voice comes through passenger side speaker only and haven't found an option to charge that.
You Tube, Facebook, gmail, gmaps, igo, SiriusXM and waze work well
Reverse Cam looks good
LCD actually suprizingly works very good even in day light. Nice and Brite.
It's locked up on me maybe twice that I can recall. No big deal. Response and speed overall is good.
Very happy so far.

My understanding is the Jeep specific one is not Android 5.1.1, its only 4.4. your GUI will look different from his. Has anyone gotten 5.1.1 to work on the Jeep specific one? I have been waiting for confirmation from Candy at Joying that the Universal 5.1.1 Head unit they have will fit and work with Canbus in the Jeep.. I've heard/read that the hardward in the 5.1.1 version is better for sound quality.. that and the DSP. I could be wrong though??

Mine is 5.1, at least that is what is says it is. The 5.1 is not on the Joying website yet, but it is on the Amazon Joying page, and Joying said it was legit:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IB8V2AO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And if you go to the Car Joying website, and look at the "Android 5.1 Car stereo" section across the top, there is a drop down menu that shows Jeep Android 5.1 Car Stereo:
https://www.carjoying.com/android-5-1-car-stereo/jeep-android-5-1-car-stereo.html
It just doesn't show up yet.
But I think I found the answer to the interface. I looked at their blog and there are 3 to 4 updates to the Android 5.1 versions, and one says "Date: Apr 30, 2016 - NEW UI Interface for android 5.1.1 lollipop"
https://www.carjoying.com/Joying-blog/42.html
I'm going to try those this week
Well, I was wrong above again. Looks like I have a current MCU, shows June 2016. Not sure how to get the interface. I emailed Joying to see what they say.

So been using it for two weeks and I am VERY happy with it. If you have a hot spot it's just like using your phone.
Some notes for those of you that have the unit to help with install.
I connected the antenna amplifier (Optional) to the Blue labeled antenna power output on the radio.
I thought the GPS and Home buttons did not illuminate but they do. You have to connect the illumination wire (Orange with White Stripe) to 12V Acc or to your cars illumination wire and the buttons light up. They transition into different colors not sure how to change that yet.
Video player does not work (Safety feature) Not sure if grounding the brake wire will bypass this.
The iGo software for GPS is fantastic, I do get GPS signal lost periodically, we have had bad weather lately so not sure whats up with that yet
Key 1 - Key 2 mystery - I have the axxess ASWC steering wheel adapter. Connecting Key 1 or Key 2 to the pink wire (cut the connector off the axxess) and I am able to setup the Steering wheel controls Vol +, Vol - and Mute. Nothing else works (2007 NBS Silverado). Still messing with that. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I think I need to manually program the Axxess Radio selection to a HU that matches the Joying. I read somewhere that Pioneer is the best match. The Axxess unit worked fine with my previous Pioneer HU.
Sub woofer output is a single mono port, needed a Y-Adapter to connect to my Sub-AMP.
Touch screen response is actually pretty good - requires a little pressure to respond.
FM radio reception is crappy - Even with the amp (Little better) - Haven't tried AM yet.

do you have an option to allow it in Car Settings or something like that? Mine did
I just got mine. I'm still wiring up the amps, but so far I can tell... The radio sounds like a low bit rate mp3. I don't listen to the radio a whole lot, so not entirely a big deal. Anything other than the radio seems to sound fine. Need to do more testing. The built in amp seems OK but don't expect a lot of output without distortion once the volume gets past 80 percent.
If I can fine tune the sound a bit more I'm sure I'll keep this thing. It is pretty cool what you can do with it.
Sorry. I have not been on this part of forums in a while.
I have a joying HU. Im pretty sure every HU owner (Joying or not will agree that android HU are good) so I will just tell you about a few of my bad points.
My car is a Mazda3
I did not buy a car specific HU so i got a universal one because of the better specs, so I got the wiring harness with it also.
They did not provide me with a CANBUS so that I can use the LCD screen of my car (which shows time etc).
Another problem I had was that initially when I conntected the head unit I could not hear any sound. Apparently it was due to some blue ant wire or something needing to be connected to the amp. So the local shop done that.
I also was given the rear view camera but I have not installed that. Again this is because I do not have the CANBUS for the car so I cannot be bothered taking the wire from back of the car to the front.
Joying did say they will tell me when the CANBUS is available but due to lack of communication and language barrier I have not been able to find out.
Other than that the HU is great and would recommend it to anyone.
Installed the OP unit in my BRZ last evening.
Need to figure out how to update the interface.
The unit actually works slightly better than I was expecting as far as the touch screen and speed.
The colors are a little washed out on the display but its ok.
The problem I'm having is the same as the other thread in here about the Bluetooth. It doesn't pair with certain devices and when it does pair it crashes the app trying to turn the Bluetooth on.
Trying to get a resolution from Joying..
Ok so have tried to trawl the web, you tube and xda but am still struggling to work out my best options.
Totally android newbie, have one for work, don’t really use it much.
Been testing car launchers on it and like the experience.
The Handsfree BT on my Mercedes Vitos radio is fubar, so considering a Chinese Android HU.
Currently considering a Merc oem style Xtrons (4 core 2gb ram) this one is 7.1 or the xtrons 10.1” Octaore 2gb ram, oddly this one is only 6?
Want to mainly use it for amazon prime music, blue tooth streaming (iPhone 7/Apple Music) satnav, and DVDs/films for the kids via HDMI to rear screens (vans for camping and trips to France etc).
Ideally dont want to have to update it straight away but equally am up for it if it’s a big boost.
But my main question is, are xtrons ok out of the box or is there a better make I should look at, or rather the same unit but from a re seller with better support or software?.
Also given the octacore units are the latest, why are the running 6?, and is that even a problem?
Really need the blue tooth for making calls to work well as that the reason I need to replace. Seen mixed reviews we mics wired up to cause echoes etc?
Like the oem style but the 10.1” screen is appealing as it will work well if I manage to upgrade to the new shape Vito next year.
Other wise I am considering a Sony Apple car play. But I think I’ll be bored with that and it will be limited and have a small screen whilst not being oem.
Thanks android folk
Anyone? ?
No one?,
I do understand it may seem silly to ask some of these questions but we all have to start someplace?.
I have no idea what a PX3/px5, mctd or mtcu is?.
But I’d like to understand, sadly trying to search this forum is a nightmare as it either pops up an advert with a guy walking about I think changing bank?. Or I get an offer of a free iPhone off virgin media (scam) or it simply crashes and reloads.
If I could get a few pointers it would be cool so I can make an informed decision.
My current thinking is that Basically the entire android HU production is from a few firms. And pretty much the head units have a ton of promise but are pretty much thrown together. So I’m keen to understand which models are less likely to be rubbish.
And also that as standard most have poor software, but this I don’t get as every android phone I’ve had off work is simply running android. I’ve never noticed much difference?. Why do people have to update the Rom when it’s already running Android?.
What’s a PX5?, from what the be seen that’s the 8 core job, generally with 2gb of ram and a 32gb rom.
Some of what I’ve found seems to indicate these should be better? And that the Bluetooth calling mic issue is better.
Best deal on that is with xtrons as all the others (with a 10.1” screen are only quad core for the same cash.
But what’s the most reliable and useable?. The PX3 (quad core mtcu?) or the Px5 ?
Why can’t the PX5 run Android 6?
And due to this should I just get the Merc style quad core running android 7.1?. Will that be more reliable and useable.
And again Xtrons seem the best all round proposition as seller.
Is the software on the Xtrons useable for basic use out the box?, ie reasonable audio, useable hands free?, gps and able to run amazon prime music and other apps foR the kids in the back?.
200-300 isn’t a small chunk of cash when you have a family of 6 so I’m keen to understand what’s the safest entry to Android HU’s and then what’s the deal and how can I learn more about booting etc.
Thanks anymone who can spend a few minutes getting me on the right path for it’d be much appreciated.
Cheers.
Lots of questions, but i'll try and sum up:
1. 200-300 that you'll spend is a gamble. I.e. hardware failures/bricks, lack of or no updates to your ROM.
2. Chinese Android HU's aren't refined. They are built/designed with good intentions, however, the software to go with is sucks.
3. The things that you expect i.e. good AM/FM quality, RDS, BT Calling etc, do work, but probably not the same quality as you'd expect (probably from mainstream headunits)
4. There are a few "good" companies that XDA tends to use more than others i.e. Joying, Pumpkin, HotAudio/Seicane/Daistao. When I put "good" in quotations, that means this is relative. These companies come out with software updates, are some what reasonable with end user support.
5. The gamble is, if you get a ****ty unit, and its hardware related, or if you decide to mod it (in most cases you will need to make the most of the HU), and you brick it.. than you have to ship the devices to China.
6. In terms of running the latest android, there really isn't a big advantage to running 7. If you can, get a unit with 6 on it. Updating has limitless possibilities of screwing up.
7. Since you're an android newb.. troubleshooting is going to be a nightmare for you, if you're not satisfied.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, much appreciated.

If / when you do get one could you leave some feedback? I'm looking at exactly the same options as you for a Merc B class as I want the stock look. Thanks
So I’m going to focus on units from Joying and Pumpkin.
Next question is why if they all run android is there software issues?, is there additional software needed to integrate with the car interfaces?.
And do I need an octacore unit (is this px5?) or will a quad core with 2gb ram do?.
Is Xtrons considered to be a bad bet if you don’t want to fiddle too much?. I ask because the same price mark with Joying and Pumpkin is for lower spec hardware or older OS.
And given that they are kind of best of the worst are they worth a premium?.
Was planning on the xtrons with either the octacore as the 10.1” screen or the merc style in the quad core as assumed it was the same inside as the more expensive joying or pumpkin but have noted the rear case can differ and on another thread here the manufacturer is noted as different to the Pumpkin units?

Will do, I think I’m going to go for the oem look and go for an 8 core as you get 32gb ram built in so I can store amazon music and movies on it for the kids and listening.

Still tempted on the Xtrons as they’ve got pretty good feedback on trust pilot and at the moment they have 15% off bio first order code so can get it under £300 all in inc an OBDII dongle and a wireless reverse camera (£15 off eBay)

Or found uk firm selling the same (similar) type for the same money looking like it has an Apple type ui and icons and I’ve seen a Seicane reviewed that had the same look. Apparently they are pretty good. I know the reviewer of the video was pleased.
I’ve mailed them to ask about software support etc.
They have 98.5% on eBay and the negative reviews are not on head units though they have lots of positive.
Oh it’s audio tech direct.

They all have software issues since they have no "real" world testing, their application is so varied across so many car models, that they really can't get it right. The pumpkins/joying/seicane have some what better support, and since they're the most "popular" units out here.. you'll get much better XDA support too (which, did I mention is probably better than manufacturer support? lol).
They're worth a premium if you want something different, to test and fidget with.. there is a ton more functionality than standard HU's, but that comes at a price of course.
Just a word of advice.. don't trust reviews on random sale websites, they're of course selling something!
Got a positive email off Audio Tech Direct this morning that explained all the questions I had Re the two units I liked. I did some research and of the two merc units I like one was 99.9% Seicane and the other was 99.9% a Erisn.
They noted they will give firmware support where needed on an if it ain’t broke basis. Suits me as I don’t plan on fiddling beyond maybe a new car style launcher.
Doing an extension at the moment so need to convince the wife later of the need for a potentially disappointing £300 radio [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Got it yesterday. Really nice, few set up issues to iron out as I was tired last night. But for the 2012 Vito it plugged in and worked straight away.
Happy so far with the unit and the UK seller, it’s a good fit, sound is great, works well looks great. Plugged and played no issues even dash display works on radio channels RDS works, the supplied aerial seems better than stock, didn’t come with the Merc boot screen but that’s in settings and was easy to change (pin code 126 I think).
Love the equaliser and speaker adjust app really good and works well, handsfree is fine via the built in mic (my car one is somewhere in the quad lock so guess it’s not used)
Screens is good, not as sharp as my iPhone but it’s not a £700 Apple product. I had hoped it would be more vibrant but this may be as it was in night mode and I can play with settings. Not used to android so will get my head around it.
Torque app looks good but couldn’t connect to dongle.
Had a few issues getting this onto iPhone WiFi but I think this is the iPhone as it the same with iPad too. WiFi seems good. Was a fair way from house and WiFi from house was connected even though the phone wouldn’t and it’s a newish iPhone 7 so + 1 to the head unit.
Can’t figure out how to change the dash widgets, don’t like the car launchers on android play store so want to get this set for me. Would like weather. Didn’t install till 9:30 last night so was tired.
Only problem really with install was I took the glove box lamp out to help fit a flush mount Usb for the rear usbs on the head units did a bang up job. It the back of the lamp hots it so not have a horror hole. Luckily I can’t see it and will glue some black plastic over it and do it Saturday when I got the parking camera. A class needs a separate power lead which is supplied so still plug and play really.
Starting up isn’t super slow or super fast. By the time I was off the drive it was working, Rev Can mutes radio. Anyway and works ( black screen for now as no camera)
These are the issues and I’m awaiting a response. Till now Audio tech direct have been great with support pre order and on delivery via Sainsburys.
Issues
On the buttons the green phone answer key does not light up green at all, the red does.
On the built in sat navs there’s no post code search that I could find. Will only use it when remote and can’t get in google maps and anyway. Or camping.
Also in the supplied Navigation I have the volume set at max but when using it this morning with the radio although the radio level dips the audio on the Nav is too low to be heard.
Strangely the radio is only on 1 but at one it’s the same as half way on a normal radio, may be a default system volume I need to change? on the drive last night you could hear it outside the van on 1.
Also on the GPs occasionally it (very quietly) says gps lost, though a check shows at least 10 channels and good fix. This is on my drive with clear sky above and driving in open environment. Still navs though.
Gps aerial is currently on dash of van with clear sky view and as noted the sat navs still seeing satellite.
Blue tooth won’t see my BT elm327 dongle?. Might be the dongle not used it before.
Tried mirror link and it connected to my iPhone but just made a horrible screaching and displayed a grey screen.
Can’t get the radio to come on without key in, not a problem in itself though the previous unit did, main problem is as soon as the key is inserted to get it to turn on it assumes you are driving so can’t show video or dvd even if the engine is off and ignition not even on. And if you take key out it powers down.
So you can’t watch video.
Made three BT calls one clear two a bit crackling but the wife was in her car in the sticks on her handsfree and the Sony BT crackles on my iPhone ad2p connection so might be her. Last night to her m bike was fine. So happy ish.
Main thing is how well the seller supports the little issues I have.
