from apple to android, huge mistake!!! - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
So after 5 years i decided to switch from my beloved iphone 4s, to the lg g2.
have realized it is biggest mistake ever after many problems
problem:
I bought the phone when i was ona trip to South korea, unlocked and good. It worked fine for some days.
I have used android encryption to encrypt the phone, after encryption the pin i have given it does not work.
everything is in Korean, even though i changed the language in the OS to english.
I tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
Model NUmber
LGF320S
but it hasnot helped, it still asks me for the PIN( attached screenshot)
LG support is totally useless and i have searched the internet for days.
Please help me
I am ready to throw this phone out the window.

Let me get this straight ; you bought a phone in another country ( this is stupid to do.). Then you encrypted it ( why?) then you didn't know the pin ( It can't simply "not work".) this is not android's fault my dear..

Unfortunately im inclined to agree, this looks more like user error than any fault of Android or LG. Why would you expect LG to give any help and support? If you purchased the phone in a different region?

Also, encryption is used on business tier phones. There is no need to encrypt it so people can't see your pictures of your genital. Still eager to know why you encrypted it..

With the least offense intended.... You are right, it was a mistake for you to leave the iPhone!
Because clearly Android doesn't need people just doing amazingly silly things and then coming online and whinging about it as if it is Android & LGs fault!
You shouldn't buy a completely foreign phone unless you know how to change it all.
Why fully encrypt it all? There are hundreds of apps you could have downloaded to keep your pics/vids/messages/contacts safe and hidden etc without taking this massive risk.
Seems your only choice, is to factory reset and get it set up in (presumably) English and start again. This time taking more care.
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk

this thread is literally full of fail. OP, go back to using an iphone, please. apple makes locked down phones for a certain reason, for certain types of people.
Sent from my LG G2 using Tapatalk Pro

Are you trying to reset the phone? If so with power off, press and hold the power key and volume down at same time. When LG screen appears release both keys and then press them again. You should get into the reset menu.
Some of you people are very rude. Maybe the OP did need to encrypt phone for business reason but it really doesn't matter why OP encrypted the phone. If it is their choice to do it then so be it, remember Android is about choice?
Dr.Molestratus why is buying phone from different country stupid to do? I buy many unlocked phones that are meant for different regions and if I had an issue that I could not resolve I would expect help from a GLOBAL company...

Am I the only one smelling something fishy here? Lets look at the facts here, he is looking for a way to get into a phone that is encrypted with a pin and in a foreign language. Maybe I'm just cynical but it sounds to me like someone trying to get into a stolen phone.

Arrogant as in calling someone stupid for buying a phone in different country and then asking why they encrypted the phone or assuming it was to hide pictures of their private parts?
Ever think it could be a bug within android. Maybe encrypting it changed the language back to default language and the character set got hosed in translation and this is why the password is not working. I have seen strange things happen when I was porting ROMs from one country phone to another.
I am sorry to say but you were the arrogant ass from your original comments. XDA is here to help users, especially new ones so instead of bashing someone when they were looking for help you should have kept your fingers off the keyboard.

Does this not work?
Power off the device and ensure it is not connected to any USB cables.
Press and hold the following keys for 8 seconds: Power key + Volume down key
When the LG Logo is displayed, release and then immediately re-hold the Power key.
When the 'FACTORY HARD RESET' screen displays, release the keys.
Press the Power key to reset or one of the Volume keys to cancel.
Press the Power key to confirm the reset. The reset will start immediately.

+1 to that, OP has been very clever, used our love of android, but he could have just used search!!

You guys are all so incredibly amusing. Because something happens that you can't explain, means suddenly OP is trying to unlock a phone that he stole? Holy crap that's a far reach. We were all noons once, it isn't too hard to believe that someone who wanted a REMOVABLE BATTERY AND REMOVABLE STORAGE bought the Korean variant. It isn't too hard to believe that someone who is paranoid about sensitive data possibly FROM THEIR OWN COMPANY or something tried to encrypt their phone. It isn't too hard to believe that encrypting the phone reset the language back to default, and here we are bashing someone for no fault of their own, because we choose to believe they stole a phone from Korea and are now trying to get into it.
How cynical can we be?

Sprint refurb full of previous owners info!

I feel like I need to get this off my chest, so my apologies of this isn't in line with the technical nature of this board.
I RMA'd my Hero a few days ago due to a blown ear speaker (sounded like a bee trapped in there whenever anyone talked), and was sent a refurb Hero that had a broken trackball button. The csr assured me the Hero had no trackball or center button (!!!) and after arguing with him that it did, he finally sent me over to Advanced Data Support or whatever they call it, where they agreed to send me out another Hero. That one arrived today, and refused to accept programming. After 45 minutes with support they finally got it to work by having me manually program it. The previous owners phone number, Sprint email (which is their full name), and city were all in there already, as it was obviously never properly reset at the factory. When they had me make a test call, voicemail, it dialed the old owner's phone number, and I actually spoke to them! When I explained it to him, he said "ohh...uh oh..." like he was pitying me for having his old phone. Out of curiosity, I googled the name, which revealed their myspace and facebook pages. I find this breach of privacy disgusting. Why is Sprint leaving so much personal data on their refurbished phones?
And I'd bet good money the other refurb I was sent, was originally sent in because of that damn broken trackball button, which they ignored and sent right back out as refurbished.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but right now I'm really disgusted with Sprint. Disgusted enough that the EVO looks a lot less enticing than it did a few days ago. :/
Thanks for reading.
-TM
Well, that's not very reassuring. If you don't already have one, I'd consider getting an account over at Sprint Users and putting it there as well. I'd not be happy having my phone go out full of my information!
Wow, this is really funny. I would definetly post at Sprint Users or Sprint Community Forums. Wonder if it is possible to wipe that data our selves before sending it back in. Seems like it would be difficult since Hands Free Activation pretty much populates all that info on the phone for you the first time you boot it up.
i hate the fact sprint takes these broken phones, fixes them and passes them off as new. the hero isn't even a year old and their doing this.
I had to get a refurb just this past Monday and before I took in my old phone I made sure to delete EVERYTHING. Although I really don't think it would hurt me too much for someone to be able to steal my identity.
This isnt something you would normally see. I had to edit what I was about to post. But phones are tested and remanufactured with new parts before being sent out. I would recomend if there is one close to you using a service and repair center for replacement rather than having them send one over the phone.... and you get the added bonus of not having to deal with the RMA kit

At no point ever, is an Advanced Exchange ever talked about as a "new" device. Every piece of literature anywhere says its a refurbished phone.. And a tech that tells you different is a liar..
Here you are again spreading lies to get a skewed point across..
I'm ashamed of myself for posting this because I'm so against it but this sounds like a case for bricking before submitting for a replacement.

Yeah, that's pretty much unacceptable. And it's not the first time it's happened, I've read about this before. I would call the news. Seriously. It's newsworthy. Maybe if Sprint feels a little heat on this issue, they'll be a bit more careful with their customer's privacy.
why would you brick a perfectly good phone because there is someone else's info in it? that's ridiculous. you can do into settings and factory reset yourself and you're good to go. no sense in killing a perfectly good phone for no reason....

I think he meant if he had to return his phone he would brick it. You know, so Sprint doesn't just pass it off to the next person as a "refurb" with all his info still in it.

I've read before that user data is stored in the mtd5 file or in mtd5ro. And i dont believe wiping clears out /dev/mtd/mtd5 and mtd5ro. But as nebenezer said you can always brick your phone, or possibly try
Code:
adb shell
rm -r /*
to delete everything. If you really wanted to.... or just delete the mtd5 files, if they actually are where userdata is stored.
So here is the thing.
When the phone is booted up - It polls the tower and says "HEY I'm MEID XXXXXXXXXXXX" - Then The phone says "HEY I DON'T HAVE ANY DATA WHAT THE HELL DO I CONNECT TO" and the Tower answers back "HERE IS ALL YOUR STUPID DATA NOW STFU" this is all of the login info and other stuff associated with the phones owner. The phone can now poll the tower for SMS, Calls, blah, blah, blah. THIS IS CALLED HANDS FREE ACTIVATION
Given overly simplfied.
Even after a phone has been completely reset out of the box brand spanking new. If the MEID is tied to a customer the phone populates automagically with that information. Thank you Sprint for this wonderful invention (which I think Verizon actually started)
So there really is no way to get all of your data off the phone since the phone will attempt to poll the data from the network once it is booted again. You need to make sure that the MEID is completly disassociated from your account to prevent it. Something Sprint has obviously failed at here.
Questions? None? Ok Good.
Kcarpenter, thanks for the explanation. The first phone I had did exactly that, immediately after booting it provisioned itself. The second phone however, did not. It just booted right up the home screen, where the HTC time/weather widget was already populated with the last known location. It appears the phone was never even turned on by Sprint after it was sent in to them. That raises even more disturbing questions regarding their refurbishing process. :/

The Process is very broken. I have heard this happen more than once.
In fact a story about me:
I bought a used phone from US Cellular, it was one of their "30 Day phones" that was only used for 30 Days by someone who didn't like it. I purchased the phone they set it up gave it to me. I got home and started playing with it and sure enough there where pictures on it of people I didn't know. I thought they may have been demo pictures, but I'll de damned if one of them was a naked black chick and another pic of a naked black dude. (not racial just not my thing). I was furious. I took the phone back and told them what had happened. They said it was impossible that had happened and the pictures where mine (Skiny pasty white guy) I had a few issues with this phones a few days later. Randomly dropping calls/signal/error messages. So I took it in to have it looked at. The water damage sensor had been lit up. No way this was my fault - the phone never left my desk at home because the damn thing didn't work worth a ****. They said this had to be my fault because they check this stuff before they sell the phone again. So I was out 200 bucks for a broken phone with pictures of ugly ass naked people on it.
Lesson Learned:
Drop US Cellular if you have them. If you ever by a used cell phone Check it thorughly for kiddie porn and water damage.

[Q] how to brick?

Im convinced my epic is screwed. Phone has been freaking out and flat out locking up on me despite rom changes and reflashes. I never back anything up and start from scratch so the fc's are beyond me understanding. Also on a few of the occasions of lockups the screen went bonkers. Anywho...
Quickest way to brick? My service center already replaced it once no questions asked. Also this was a refurb so maybe it has something to do with its "past life". Any suggestions? Battery and usb cable pull during odin stock flash?

I find this thread offensive - the purpose of these and other threads is to be creative and help users.
Asking for help, such as "where do I find the thread on how to fix a bricked phone" which might fix your problem by following instructions is acceptable.
Go read it.
Asking for help to perpetuate fraud is NOT acceptable. I hope the mods read this, pull this, and warn this person.
Sprint can look, fix, and help you, that is why you buy insurance if you can't follow the above.
People like you who pull fraudulant tricks are what causes the rest of our rates to go up, make them look harder at people with real problems and real claims.
You knew flashing changes the rules, that is why you read, learn, and ask real questions.
GTFO. Just GTFO. Don't brick your **** because it's unstable - if you have a legitimate cause for warranty repair, find it and do it. Otherwise, fix the problem yourself. Intentional bricks are offensively stupid.
All of these users asking how to purposely brick their phone should have their account banned and all account affiliated ip addresses blacklisted.
You are probably not going to receive much help on this one. The last thing 99.99% of users want to do it brick their devices. It's actually a major fear for many users. I can see how people would be offended by your question. While I'm not offened, I don't understand why you would ever, ever, ever want to intentionally brick your device. There is no guarantee that you will get a replacement or that you will get one free of charge. I agree that you are far better trying to fix your phone. If you brick it in the process, then you will have your desired result either way (i.e. your phone will be fixed or it will be bricked).
This is outrageous how can u expect us to help u **** ur fone up. It is against the law to do fraudulent claims. I suggest you stop what u r doing or I will have ur IP checked and have you arrested by my colleagues.

There are valid reasons to brick a phone. for instance if you have a messed up usb port and can't odin your phone back to stock, then your only optiion is to brick if you want to get a replacement as they aren't going to do anything if the phone is on a custom rom.
I tried at one point to brick my phone so i could exchange it, after exhausting other methods of getting it back to stock. no way no how would it actually brick.
But I know one way that would probably do it, just install vision kernal 1.2 and wait about 3 days, unless you have one of the magical phones, that should do the job. But the link was taken down for this very reason so unless you already have it, thats not going to help much.

False. Even if you don't have your SD adapter, you can just download the ReRFS ROM and stock recovery (can't use *upload? Download on your PC and upload to Dropbox) and flash in that order.

The "when the carrier allows it" statement looks like a backdoor for Motorola.
What the heck has the carrier to care about unlocking my device? The only thing i can imagine is the fear of removing simlock, but is there actually any simlocked device?
There are simlocked Milestones elsewhere i think.. some dude told me he got a Simlocked MS2.. but thats not the problem goddam it.. my Phone is Bought WITHOUT contract and WITHOUT Provider.. thats the good thing about Europe.. we have Sim Cards.. so we can use this phone with every provider.. the point is.. it doesnt get protected of any provider means their Backdoor WOULD NOT WORK on my device.. so i wanna see what they do now.. these idiots..
Been reading this - the motorola europe team have a serious lack of support for consumers who actually use the open-sourceness of a phone...

Im not sure about that law in germany.. but if it exists.. it cant be under 2 years.. and in that timeline motorolas "date" will happen..so i wait until 2012... (also i have some pay contract.. wich ends 2012) so lets see if they put a Diamond lock on it.. or a paper lock so that we can easily cut the paper with a scissor.. (hope you get my stupid metaphor)

I understand -.-
Motorola are really bad when it comes to customer service outside of America. Me and 2 of my friends have the Milestone 2 (I only got one because I couldn't be bothered waiting for a LGO2X and they physical keyboard) and they aren't happy either. I know people with Gingerbread on their phones and they can install ROMs as they pick and choose; Motorola are just trying to cut corners tbh and their excuses don't work. Probably 80% of the MS2s were released SIM Unlocked so to say 'depends on carrier' is pathetic. Talk about negligence
I get your point regarding the law.
But no court in Europe or elswhere could get Moto to unlock their bootloader. Maybe you could get your money back, but who really wants to go to the court for this...?
I don't know if it's just me, but I read out of it that there actually IS unlocking. I mean they said regarding unlocking bootloaders: this feature will be enabled in future software releases (later in 2011). That's a good thing isn't it.
Have you got the link to the conversation?
....only if the carriers agree. which seems like a backdoor for doing something to me.....

I wonder the bootloader unlock issue is applying to which regions? Is it for all moto device around the world?
My milestone 2 is bought without any carriers, but the support of moto in Asia is much poorer than in Europe. Imagine at late 2011, moto bullshiting to Asian users that our devices "cannot" be unlocked, or simply ignore us =.=

You can always flash a foreing recovery/SBF.
Sent from my Milestone 2 XDA App
It depends on how moto would unlock our device.
Like sony ericsson, they offer bootloader unlock service that need to register the phone (IMEI I think), so that the phone will loss warranty.
Flashing a foreign sbf would not change the IMEI code, so if moto restrict the unlocking region.......
Let's see how it goes then xd

what takes them so long?
sony ericsson used a month from announcing to unlock the bootloaders to actually provide the service.
If the Function that checks the signatures is gone, we can do what we want.. no matter what they do.. we could put every Android OS on it..... even other operating systems.. thats not the problem.. also they should use the Nexus way.. a button in the bootloader to unlock it.. if you unlock it, it will show some text everytime you turn on the phone wich says "You lost your warranty by turning off the bootloader-lock" wich would be fine.. who cares if you want CM7 .. unlock it and loose your warranty.. its your own choose.. like on the Nexus.. and i would definately unlock it in the first second i got the Update lol
Nowadays, even Apple have their *ancient* versions of Mac OS to download in the institutional website - developers can download those 4MB ROMs and emulate it anywhere... Even I did it in my Nintendo DS once.
OK. That was a terrible, extreme and pessimist example... But, maybe one year after the ML2 went out of the stores ~ Motorola might play "cool" and release an unlockABLE bootloader.
aw yeah... that would be great - if only all of us were not with some brand-new "free to fly with CM and whatever" smartphones then (sometimes life teaches you the lessons the harder way). =/
well... at least in a far far away future our mothers may have their herited Milestones 2 with an awsome Custom ROM. \o/

Are you absolutely sure this was a Nexus 4 kernel? If you in fact flashed a kernel that's not a Nexus 4 kernel, say one for the Nexus 7 then you have a hard bricked phone. Flashing a wrong kernel will basically fry your bootloader as it overwrites it with the wrong devices bootloader or something like that and there is no way to fix it yourself. A JTAG repair will recover your phone and that's not something you can do you have to pay for the service.
If you search the forum for JTAG you will find lots of threads on hard bricked phones like this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089390&highlight=jtag
Here are some links to the guy who does the JTAG repair.

Edit: I actually had to look this up as kexec isn't a kernel but a process added to a kernel that allows hot reloading of a new kernel while a device is running.

Flashing a kernel for the Nexus 7 will hard brick the Nexus 4 and I am afraid the only way out is a JTAG repair, which I provided a link to in my previous post. I haven't heard of anyone recovering their phone any other way. The JTAG service is like $50 and you have to send the phone to the guy who does it. If its a newish phone I'd try and go through Google first to get a new one just don't tell them what you did just say it won't boot up.

New Nexus 4 owner here. I'm scrolling through the Q&A section getting a good laugh/realization of how utterly stupid a vast majority of Android users are.
I'm not new to Android by any means (OG Droid/Thunderbolt/GNex), but I'm loving all these "help!!" threads. 95% of these bricks would never happen or would be fixed if people took the time to read and stopped using these toolkits. I mean you do own a Nexus, it doesn't get easir.
I'm sure the people I've quoted (myself included) have bricked a phone a time or two, but the difference between us and the OP is the fact that we know what we're getting ourselves into and we can read.
OP, it's people like you who ruin the good for everyone else.
Anyway, enjoy the new phone. I'm sure we'll see you back in here soon after you root and unlock bootloader with a toolkit, go to flah a rom and accidentally wipe system, data, and internal storage.

I patiently waited a month for the SD card, and didn't complain or worry about it, but come on you saying I'm not entitled to customer service? Might have been free but it definitely was one of the reasons (not only by far) that I chose the g4 and thus far I've received no customer service. Hell I'd be fine with an auto reply, to let me know they at least received it. Instead vague twitter responses aren't very reassuring

I think their service is ****. I'm in Europe and I don't get that SD card and I paid more for the devce. Maybe I should start a thread
In my opinion every manufacturers' customer service sucks if you don't reach right department.
Have you try making phone calls? Its almost impossible for them to put you on "do not reply" and have to transfer you.
Just play dumb and say "not sure if I dialed in right number" and they will be happy to put you on roulette table. You will land on right number eventually.
Just make sure you have something other stuff to do while they put you on cheesy classic piano music.
Or google.

I agree, I was mearly making a joke about the whole thing because not everyone receives same experience by other human beings.
but i always ask for the situation numbers before hanging up, if they say they don't have it, ask them to create one and provide one.
so when you call back, you can just say i'm following up on a status of situation # xxxxxxx. don't have to repeat. this way, they have it on records.
email, live chat would be my first choice, then go for actual human conversation.:good:
As a customer service person, email is NOT the better way.
Especially when the person flags it as 'urgent' I show it to my colleagues and laugh (not for real tho) because if it was truly urgent why don't you just call. Through email you give them the opportunity to put it off for later as you're experiencing.
When you call them, they're on the spot and you will get the answer. If not, you'll at the least have a case/ticket number to refer too when you call back the next day or something.
I finally got a response after a week of bugging them on twitter and email. They are shipping me a new SD card. Not sure when( they said 7-10 business days) but I'm fine with a response and am OK with waiting. That's really all I wanted, a status update
