The "when the carrier allows it" statement looks like a backdoor for Motorola.
What the heck has the carrier to care about unlocking my device? The only thing i can imagine is the fear of removing simlock, but is there actually any simlocked device?
There are simlocked Milestones elsewhere i think.. some dude told me he got a Simlocked MS2.. but thats not the problem goddam it.. my Phone is Bought WITHOUT contract and WITHOUT Provider.. thats the good thing about Europe.. we have Sim Cards.. so we can use this phone with every provider.. the point is.. it doesnt get protected of any provider means their Backdoor WOULD NOT WORK on my device.. so i wanna see what they do now.. these idiots..
Been reading this - the motorola europe team have a serious lack of support for consumers who actually use the open-sourceness of a phone...

You could sue Moto or get a refund? In the UK the law is if you buy a product with an incorrect description you my get a refund if you apply for a refund within I think 6 years of purchase. I bought mine in March and it said 'latest version of android' and at the time of purchase it bloody well wasn't and isn't

Im not sure about that law in germany.. but if it exists.. it cant be under 2 years.. and in that timeline motorolas "date" will happen..so i wait until 2012... (also i have some pay contract.. wich ends 2012) so lets see if they put a Diamond lock on it.. or a paper lock so that we can easily cut the paper with a scissor.. (hope you get my stupid metaphor)

Motorola are really bad when it comes to customer service outside of America. Me and 2 of my friends have the Milestone 2 (I only got one because I couldn't be bothered waiting for a LGO2X and they physical keyboard) and they aren't happy either. I know people with Gingerbread on their phones and they can install ROMs as they pick and choose; Motorola are just trying to cut corners tbh and their excuses don't work. Probably 80% of the MS2s were released SIM Unlocked so to say 'depends on carrier' is pathetic. Talk about negligence
I get your point regarding the law.
But no court in Europe or elswhere could get Moto to unlock their bootloader. Maybe you could get your money back, but who really wants to go to the court for this...?
I don't know if it's just me, but I read out of it that there actually IS unlocking. I mean they said regarding unlocking bootloaders: this feature will be enabled in future software releases (later in 2011). That's a good thing isn't it.
Have you got the link to the conversation?
....only if the carriers agree. which seems like a backdoor for doing something to me.....

I wonder the bootloader unlock issue is applying to which regions? Is it for all moto device around the world?
My milestone 2 is bought without any carriers, but the support of moto in Asia is much poorer than in Europe. Imagine at late 2011, moto bullshiting to Asian users that our devices "cannot" be unlocked, or simply ignore us =.=

You can always flash a foreing recovery/SBF.
Sent from my Milestone 2 XDA App
It depends on how moto would unlock our device.
Like sony ericsson, they offer bootloader unlock service that need to register the phone (IMEI I think), so that the phone will loss warranty.
Flashing a foreign sbf would not change the IMEI code, so if moto restrict the unlocking region.......
Let's see how it goes then xd

what takes them so long?
sony ericsson used a month from announcing to unlock the bootloaders to actually provide the service.
If the Function that checks the signatures is gone, we can do what we want.. no matter what they do.. we could put every Android OS on it..... even other operating systems.. thats not the problem.. also they should use the Nexus way.. a button in the bootloader to unlock it.. if you unlock it, it will show some text everytime you turn on the phone wich says "You lost your warranty by turning off the bootloader-lock" wich would be fine.. who cares if you want CM7 .. unlock it and loose your warranty.. its your own choose.. like on the Nexus.. and i would definately unlock it in the first second i got the Update lol
Nowadays, even Apple have their *ancient* versions of Mac OS to download in the institutional website - developers can download those 4MB ROMs and emulate it anywhere... Even I did it in my Nintendo DS once.
OK. That was a terrible, extreme and pessimist example... But, maybe one year after the ML2 went out of the stores ~ Motorola might play "cool" and release an unlockABLE bootloader.
aw yeah... that would be great - if only all of us were not with some brand-new "free to fly with CM and whatever" smartphones then (sometimes life teaches you the lessons the harder way). =/
well... at least in a far far away future our mothers may have their herited Milestones 2 with an awsome Custom ROM. \o/

So heres the story. i called google because my power button wouldnt work.. they checked my IMEI and said it wasnt on their database.. so they transfered me to HTC. The rep told me that I have what they call a holiday nexus. there were only a 1000 made and given to google employees for testing. he told me that it had a different bootloader and that it was a collectors item. He said its value is significantly more than a normal nexus. I dont see a difference between this phone and a normal nexus one. nothing seems different other than the bootloader being unlocked from the start. Anyone care to share their thoughts and tell me what makes this phone any different?
It has S=OFF, so you can re-lock the bootloader with 'fastboot oem lock'
Also you should have an Android waving a QR code flag on the battery cover.
hmm yeah S is OFF but i dont have the Android waving a QR code flag on the back.. very weird. i wonder if the guy who sold it to me worked at google..

Check if you have S=OFF in fastboot, you might be a lucky boy...
I have one of these phones too, QR back cover and all. I doubt I'd be able to get it fixed under warranty if I need to since it was a gift from Google, so I won't be needing to relock it anyway.
OMG!
I would kill for one of those! jajaja

Maybe you can switch phones with cyanogen and he can play around with the bootloader to see if he can find out how the relocking of the bootloader goes. Maybe he might find something and can release something so people can relock their bootloaders. Just a thought.
If memory serves, it's not so simple & the holiday bootloader is 250kb too big for a retail phone.

So there absolutely has to be a place where we can buy this cover
It's just a normal one
I also have a holiday nexus one with the QR code cover (btw this links to android.com/holidays but only on a Nexus One), which I rooted a few months ago. It seems to be completely normal before unlocking, with no superuser access and apparently a locked bootloader as well. The fastboot mode shows this text (after using fastboot oem unlock and Amon Ra recovery):
*** UNLOCKED ***
NEXUSONE PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.33.2012 (PB9910000)
MICROP-0a15
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0102
RADIO-4.03.00.21_2
[date]
Is this the same as a normal Nexus?
No. You can relock your bootloader.
Since the only real purpose of relocking the bootloader would be to have the phone officially covered by warranty, why is this really even useful on the "holiday" nexus if that is not covered under warranty at all anyhow?
It seems the only advantage is the battery cover then, which doesn't seem like too big of a deal.

i got this phone off craigslist. traded my iphone 3g and 150 bucks for it. it was in perfect shape, didnt come with anything other than the phone. the guy i bought it off was very weird. he said like 5 words throughout the whole transaction. when i first got the phone, it did not have a rom installed on it. i could go into fastboot and a weird recovery. it had Hello World floating across the page when you rebooted into recovery. i just flashed the CM recovery put CM on it and its been working fine since.

Exactly. At some point I just stopped talking to them at all, it's completely pointless. Same with computer shop staff and car dealers. An evening with google is way more productive before a decision on something important/expensive.
Yeah before I got my note I was ringing up every phone shop asking them if they knew when the Galaxy Note would be in stock.
I would then receive the reply "Don't you mean the Galaxy Nexus?"
No I mean the Galaxy Note.
"Hmm I don't think we do that phone I'm afraid."
Yes you do.
"Okay, well let me check the system.....*after a while* Oh yes we do sell that phone but we have no release date yet I'm afraid."
Then when I did buy my phone the guy instore was amazed with the phone..never heard of it and couldn't believe the size of the screen...Why do they work in these places!?

Not that I don't agree but its interesting to know how did you come up with that %number.
When the Note was released, I wanted to see it before purchasing it to get some idea on the size. In the UK we have the CPW (carphonewarehouse), anyway I made the mistake of visiting their local store...
Me: Hi mate, do you have the Galaxy Note in stock?
Him: The what?
Me: The Galaxy Note.
Him: Whats that?
Me: A phone.
Him: We don't sell that phone.
Me: Are you sure? Will any other CPW have it in stock?
Him: Are you sure it's called the Galaxy Note?
Me: 100%
Him: One sec I will check our system. *checks* Nope we do not offer that phone at all at any of our branches in the UK.
Me: Even though it is on your website?
Him: Erm...
Me: BYE.
Absolutely utter tools some of them.

Finally I have somebody who speaks my mind!
It may be worse here in the USA but I have listened in when my wife has called and they really are complete morons sometimes. Just today I went into an att store and the sales person swore up and down my note would not work on their network, and they had no idea what the damn thing was. Oh and I had to inform the person it was coming to att soon which they were shocked.
They amaze me sometimes

During the time i lived in the US, i worked for T-Mobile in customer care. Due to my experience with Windows Mobile devices i had much more knowledge than anyone in the technical care team. But get this, on winmo devices you could only have 1 hotmail email synced on the device and in our system which held info on the touch pro 2 and the hd2 there was listed a "known issue" of only being able to have one hotmail account on the device. The listed remedy? A matter reset! No one at tmo, who write this stuff had even worked out you could sign out and sign back in with another account. Total chimps the lot of them.

Not to sound like a douche but come on guys.
Most of the people working at places like CPW, Bestbuy or whatever are there simply to sell stuff that they have. Those stores have hundreds if not thousands of different products and it is literally impossible for any salesperson in those places to know every single product they sell inside out or even all the product names.
Even companies like AT&T that sell mostly phones and broadband stuff have tens/hundreds of items. Being a tool at the salespeople in these places is just that, being a tool.
And just in case some of you didn't know this yet, for a salesperson the most important thing is to know the few best products and how to promote them best. Even though I love my Note, I'm quite sure it isn't the leading pulling factor for electronic & phone stores.
However I do agree that in after sale -services such as helpedesk or troubleshooting they should have people who actually know what they are talking about.
In Ukraine every single clerk knew about SGN, its delivery dates and other tech specs
Perhaps it is because of huge advertising campaign by Samsung about this phone.
Why restrict it to phone company employees?
When the SG2 was released in the USA, I went to take a look at one, just to see if it looked small compared to my Dell Streak (I have the note now). Walked into Best Buy...had no clue. Went to an at&t store, they had one on display (functioning). Sales drone came up to me and asked if I was looking to buy that phone, told her no, I had a 5" screen, whipped out my streak. She said "oh, that runs android doesn't it?" Yes it does. "well, I only try to sell iPhones because they are better than android". I just laughed and walked out the door.
Hey, if you like your locked down tiny screen, you really can't do what you want to YOUR phone because Apple says so...be my guest. Not me.
Thanks for this thread
For a long time I thought that this is only in germany the case the nobody knows what he/she is telling about stuff what they are selling
It is really terrible, because in most cases you are paying for it, for the good advice
I am happy now, I now know that this is a global problem, so still use google and then buy in www is for me still the best way

Thank you. I have to wonder how many of the people in this thread have actually worked retail. It's a crap job, it doesn't pay much, and in most places there isn't much time to really learn deeply about the products you're selling. They're probably not geeks, because if they were they'd probably working somewhere else most of the time. I'm not expecting someone who gets a low hourly wage to invest their off time in learning the products they sell, and most of them probably don't make enough money to buy a lot of the stuff. Even if they wanted to, your typical cell phone store is selling hundreds or thousands of phones or accessories, and the stock is always changing.
Look people, it's a job, hardly anyone does it for fun. They have a basic level of knowledge because 95% of their customers have even less knowledge, so they do fine. These people put in their hours and get a paycheck, because they have bills to pay, mouths to feed, just like you or me. Treat them with a little respect, okay? They're people!
If you want to blame someone, blame the company that doesn't provide enough training, because it costs too much, then blame yourself for not being willing to pay significantly more for your toys in order to fund the training the employees need to meet your standards.
Blame the company. 3rd party sales do not train for crap. This is from personal experince. Sales numbers are all that matters. Hell I've worked retail whwre my manager disnt know how to uninstall a program from android. I also worked for tier 2 tech support for Sprint (3rd party), I found it sad we were hiring tech support people that didnt even know how to unistall a pc program (seriously 2 people they hired didnt even know what control panel was!)
What seems to happen is these companies get 1 or 2 tech savvy people amd lay it all on them

What i've posted before (over in the android development forum)
Because credits are needed to unlock the phone... (IMO) The software is most likely suppose to be bought by a minor carrier (like boost, us cellular, etc.) So they either can unlock phones after a persons contract is up and they want to switch carriers, or so that extra phones from big carriers can be unlocked, rebranded and sold through a third party. It just so happens that we have users who bought the program and people who get a test point unlock pay right around cost to get their phone unlocked...
These credits (about $24 worth) allow an end user to unlock the sim lock/bootloader (see above)
I don't remember which company supplies them, but it's the same company that makes the program to unlock phones.

I share the discussion I had with the Sony customer services.
Thank you for your patience while we look for an agent to help you ...
You currently have the number 1 in the queue.
You have been connected to an agent.
Gramond Justine: Hello and thank you to use the assistance of Sony Xperia Chat service. My name is Justine Gramond. first of all thank you to give me your name and your email address so we can best respond to your question. Thank you.
david:
Gramond Justine: Thanks, I see that you unlock your device?
david: Yes. I have not touched anything else
Gramond Justine: As informative, know that you have lost the warranty of your device ..
david: on sony website, it is stated that it is likely to lose the warranty but not 100% sure
david: are you there?
Gramond Justine: This is the official procedure: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/; for further information, call the community because we do not do any support for this procedure. If the procedure as described in the response to the test release is "No" you can not make the release of this device.
Gramond Justine: This is what we send to the customer who wants their device unlocked.
david: I want to restore original configuration, I lost the use of the application "Video Unlimited".
Gramond Justine: You can try resetting your phone?
david: Already done, I have followed the methods that you give to the website and that is why I contact you via chat
david: I also tried to update the application on playstore but that does not change
david: Apparently the fact unlock the bootloader prevents the use of "Video Unlimited". This is why I want you to hand the phone configuration as factory output
Gramond Justine: Yes it is very likely
david: So Sony did not specify precisely, if I had known this, I would not have unlocked the bootloader.
david: Do you have a solution for me?
Gramond Justine: We strongly discourage, no solution unfortunately.
David: So you can not fix my phone either through the warranty or not?
Gramond Justine: Absolutely.
david: I sums to be sure I understand, there is currently no way to fix my phone even though I am willing to pay?
Gramond Justine: Yes, because it is no longer under android.
david: Uh false
david: It is the original software
david: I have not changed anything, I just unlocked the bootloader and I saw that my application not working
Gramond Justine: Please wait a moment, I'll find out for you.
Gramond Justine: I confirm, we can not do anything more.
david: can i record our conversation and share it on various forums? So that people know it is better to buy a device from the competition.

People can avoid this situation by waiting for root on locked bootloader then you can keep the warranty.. by rushing to unlock bootloader you lose quite a few functions..
They do warn you the warranty will be gone which means they are not obliged to repair or restore anything you have done with the device..

Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
I doubt that half of the phone's features stopped working after the unlock.
They do warn you the warranty will be gone which means they are not obliged to repair or restore anything you have done with the device..

I asked her if sony could fix my phone with or without warranty , and that I was willing to pay if necessary.
she replied that it was not possible

O f course I was not talking about features of the phone itself but important features provided by Sony. the phone is usable, but if I buy a sony phone is to have sony function, in which case I buy a cheaper and equally powerful phone

Every manufacturer does this, not just Sony.

you willingly and knowingly forfeited your warranty when unlocking, so whining about it now is pointless.
This has been known for a long time.

Actually, HTC does a good job of repairing phones despite unlocked bootloaders.

I'm afraid it's not trolling. Recently I've witnessed a student looking for a Linux activation key on Microsoft's website... (this person is studying informatics)

Under European law, a device can't be denied warranty (which runs for 2 years) if it has been broken by manufacturer error, and user actions on software side does not matter.
Rooting, flashing things, unlocking bootloaders shouldn't affect warranty.
Samsung, HTC don't care if you've done that. Make that clear to Sony if you're in the EU.

can you give me the law which you speak? and actually I live in Europe and specifically in France (often more restrictive)

actually Sony does so as well in most cases. It's just with the unlock they do not have to.

If there is a (hardware) defect contact sony and they will probably sort you out, at least that is what they have often done in the past - as long as the problem is not related to the unlock! The problem with your lost DRM is not a hardware defect though, and there is no law in the world which would help you in this case.

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:1999:171:0012:0016:EN:PDF
Member States shall bring into force the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with this Directive not later than 1 January 2002.
So it should be local law in every EU member state today.
It's only really helpful within the first six months though:
Unless proved otherwise, any lack of conformity which becomes apparent within six months of delivery of the goods shall be presumed to have existed at the time of delivery unless this presumption is incompatible with the nature of the goods or the nature of the lack of conformity.
This does not refer to Sony's warranty though (see Article 6 - Guarantees. In Germany it's called "Gewährleistung", which is often translated to the other terms, but this is wrong. A guarantee/warranty is a voluntary contract, usually between the consumer and producer, while what's defined in 1999/44/EC regulates sales which happen between consumer and seller (unless it's the same company, e.g. when you're buying directly from Sony).
+ for manufacturer warranty, which is voluntary, the manufacturer can set whichever terms he likes
My seller therefore obliged to repair my phone but not the manufacturer. or am I wrong?

If you buy a Sony phone (or any other manufacturer) for having a phone to work like a Sony phone then you shouldn't modify it as to keep it a Sony phone (with all functions).
Losing DRM keys (and thereby some functionality) by unlocking the BL is nothing new and wasn't exactly introduced by Sony with the Z3 line only. Further, this forum gives you plenty of information on what it means as well as it is even clearly stated on the Sony BL Unlock Site from where you got the key.
You have indeed willingly and knowingly forfeited your warranty and you expect answers from the wrong people as well, that is the call agent.
You wiped your TA Partiom its gone for good...
Warrenty repair isn't going to magically make it appear again, that's the risk unfortunately you ran by unlocking your BL.
Always do research prior to doing things like this there were rumblings about this before Sony added their 2 cents based on previous xperia phones.
I would say this thread is a some-what continuation of the attendance thread located: here
**What is our device**
Our device in the US is the: ZE551ML as indicated on the ASUS website.
If you are attending the event tomorrow, please be sure to ask many questions.
It seems like clemsyn contacted ASUS support and ASUS support said our bootloader is LOCKED!
One question that we have to ask is when will we be expecting a bootloader unlock tool? As you know, we can't do much with a locked bootloader. It won't be possible to flash custom ROMS without an unlocked bootloader, so please be sure to ask that! I'll be attending the event, but the more people that ask the more ASUS knows that we want to support this device on this forum.
What is there to do once we receive the unlocked bootloader?
1) Obtain Pre-Root (Already achieved and can be located here)
2) Compile CWM/TWRP Recovery (Not sure, I've never tinkered with recoveries)
** The Lenovo K900 uses an Intel processor and Recovery has been compiled on their forum on XDA**
Maybe we can use their GITHUB as an example: https://github.com/lenovo-k900 & https://github.com/xxx-man?tab=repositories
3) ROMS
Once we receive the unlocked bootloader and somebody compiles the custom recovery needed, it should be smooth from there!
I've developed lightly versions of stock ROMs in the past which is great for performance and battery life and have ported themes over from one device to another device.
I used to be an recognized contributor when I used to develop all the time for devices that I've had, I've been invited to the event tomorrow personally by ASUS and look forward to seeing the device and getting it in my hands!

Noble Series is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 5.0 (L), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.
And..... I do look forward to bringing my "Noble Series" to the Zenfone 2 in the near future once we have the recovery compiled for our device!
i have a gut feeling ours will be unlocked from asus at tommorows event, start off smooth so the ball gets rollin for them:silly:

I asked the question about the boot loader on the launch here in the Philippines.. It seems some staff are not that knowledgeable.

I'll figure it out and see tomorrow when I attend the event.
I'm going to come back with as much information as possible, I'm already speaking to a developer and asking him to help us port a custom recovery.
Baby steps, baby steps

I'm here, hi!
NA got the 64GB 4GB Z00A which is the ZE551ML model.
Oh yeah and... bootloader is locked but in the near future they will be looking to unlock it..
I spoke to one of the Asus guys at the event. The bootloader is currently locked but he told me they were working with Intel to get a bootloader unlock. Apparently it's in Intel's court

I spoke to somebody as well and heard the same thing.
It'll probably be x weeks-x months to see if we receive a tool which sucks, I wanted to develop some cool things

I know.. it's such a nice device. Much nicer than I imagined. I asked for a red one and they gave me one hehe
I know Dees Troy has one coming to him but until we get the bootloader unlocked we are down the creek without a paddle (I know the expression is up the creek without a paddle but always thought this was wrong..if you're up the creek water flows down so it would be easy..if you were down the creek trying to go upstream without a paddle then I think that's worse so I say down instead of up)
The ASUS guy did say they know it's important to get it unlocked. He told me to email him to check on the status. He actually came up to me to talk to me because I was wearing my xda shirt

This phone is incredibly fast.. I'm shocked how fluid everything is. Scrolling in Chrome or even through Tapatalk is buttery smooth. Usually one of the first things I do on a phone is go into developer options and set animations to .5, I don't feel I need to do that on that device. It just flies
