Anyone else noticed - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

That most people who work for cell phone companies are incompetent when it comes to cell phone knowledge? It is quite amusing to ask them questions or call into the tech support line for help. I would guess 97.4% of them are clueless about what they are talking about

What the? hahahaha . . . .lol

Exactly. At some point I just stopped talking to them at all, it's completely pointless. Same with computer shop staff and car dealers. An evening with google is way more productive before a decision on something important/expensive.

Yeah before I got my note I was ringing up every phone shop asking them if they knew when the Galaxy Note would be in stock.
I would then receive the reply "Don't you mean the Galaxy Nexus?"
No I mean the Galaxy Note.
"Hmm I don't think we do that phone I'm afraid."
Yes you do.
"Okay, well let me check the system.....*after a while* Oh yes we do sell that phone but we have no release date yet I'm afraid."
Then when I did buy my phone the guy instore was amazed with the phone..never heard of it and couldn't believe the size of the screen...Why do they work in these places!?

Not that I don't agree but its interesting to know how did you come up with that %number.

When the Note was released, I wanted to see it before purchasing it to get some idea on the size. In the UK we have the CPW (carphonewarehouse), anyway I made the mistake of visiting their local store...
Me: Hi mate, do you have the Galaxy Note in stock?
Him: The what?
Me: The Galaxy Note.
Him: Whats that?
Me: A phone.
Him: We don't sell that phone.
Me: Are you sure? Will any other CPW have it in stock?
Him: Are you sure it's called the Galaxy Note?
Me: 100%
Him: One sec I will check our system. *checks* Nope we do not offer that phone at all at any of our branches in the UK.
Me: Even though it is on your website?
Him: Erm...
Me: BYE.
Absolutely utter tools some of them.

Finally I have somebody who speaks my mind!

It may be worse here in the USA but I have listened in when my wife has called and they really are complete morons sometimes. Just today I went into an att store and the sales person swore up and down my note would not work on their network, and they had no idea what the damn thing was. Oh and I had to inform the person it was coming to att soon which they were shocked.
They amaze me sometimes

They are absolutely have no interested in the job or career they are doing. For them, they just come to work, end office hour, then go back home. They only interested in their salary they get every month ;'d
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App

During the time i lived in the US, i worked for T-Mobile in customer care. Due to my experience with Windows Mobile devices i had much more knowledge than anyone in the technical care team. But get this, on winmo devices you could only have 1 hotmail email synced on the device and in our system which held info on the touch pro 2 and the hd2 there was listed a "known issue" of only being able to have one hotmail account on the device. The listed remedy? A matter reset! No one at tmo, who write this stuff had even worked out you could sign out and sign back in with another account. Total chimps the lot of them.

Not to sound like a douche but come on guys.
Most of the people working at places like CPW, Bestbuy or whatever are there simply to sell stuff that they have. Those stores have hundreds if not thousands of different products and it is literally impossible for any salesperson in those places to know every single product they sell inside out or even all the product names.
Even companies like AT&T that sell mostly phones and broadband stuff have tens/hundreds of items. Being a tool at the salespeople in these places is just that, being a tool.
And just in case some of you didn't know this yet, for a salesperson the most important thing is to know the few best products and how to promote them best. Even though I love my Note, I'm quite sure it isn't the leading pulling factor for electronic & phone stores.
However I do agree that in after sale -services such as helpedesk or troubleshooting they should have people who actually know what they are talking about.

In Ukraine every single clerk knew about SGN, its delivery dates and other tech specs
Perhaps it is because of huge advertising campaign by Samsung about this phone.

Why restrict it to phone company employees?

When the SG2 was released in the USA, I went to take a look at one, just to see if it looked small compared to my Dell Streak (I have the note now). Walked into Best Buy...had no clue. Went to an at&t store, they had one on display (functioning). Sales drone came up to me and asked if I was looking to buy that phone, told her no, I had a 5" screen, whipped out my streak. She said "oh, that runs android doesn't it?" Yes it does. "well, I only try to sell iPhones because they are better than android". I just laughed and walked out the door.
Hey, if you like your locked down tiny screen, you really can't do what you want to YOUR phone because Apple says so...be my guest. Not me.

Thanks for this thread
For a long time I thought that this is only in germany the case the nobody knows what he/she is telling about stuff what they are selling
It is really terrible, because in most cases you are paying for it, for the good advice
I am happy now, I now know that this is a global problem, so still use google and then buy in www is for me still the best way

Thank you. I have to wonder how many of the people in this thread have actually worked retail. It's a crap job, it doesn't pay much, and in most places there isn't much time to really learn deeply about the products you're selling. They're probably not geeks, because if they were they'd probably working somewhere else most of the time. I'm not expecting someone who gets a low hourly wage to invest their off time in learning the products they sell, and most of them probably don't make enough money to buy a lot of the stuff. Even if they wanted to, your typical cell phone store is selling hundreds or thousands of phones or accessories, and the stock is always changing.
Look people, it's a job, hardly anyone does it for fun. They have a basic level of knowledge because 95% of their customers have even less knowledge, so they do fine. These people put in their hours and get a paycheck, because they have bills to pay, mouths to feed, just like you or me. Treat them with a little respect, okay? They're people!
If you want to blame someone, blame the company that doesn't provide enough training, because it costs too much, then blame yourself for not being willing to pay significantly more for your toys in order to fund the training the employees need to meet your standards.

Blame the company. 3rd party sales do not train for crap. This is from personal experince. Sales numbers are all that matters. Hell I've worked retail whwre my manager disnt know how to uninstall a program from android. I also worked for tier 2 tech support for Sprint (3rd party), I found it sad we were hiring tech support people that didnt even know how to unistall a pc program (seriously 2 people they hired didnt even know what control panel was!)
What seems to happen is these companies get 1 or 2 tech savvy people amd lay it all on them

Sprint refurb full of previous owners info!

I feel like I need to get this off my chest, so my apologies of this isn't in line with the technical nature of this board.
I RMA'd my Hero a few days ago due to a blown ear speaker (sounded like a bee trapped in there whenever anyone talked), and was sent a refurb Hero that had a broken trackball button. The csr assured me the Hero had no trackball or center button (!!!) and after arguing with him that it did, he finally sent me over to Advanced Data Support or whatever they call it, where they agreed to send me out another Hero. That one arrived today, and refused to accept programming. After 45 minutes with support they finally got it to work by having me manually program it. The previous owners phone number, Sprint email (which is their full name), and city were all in there already, as it was obviously never properly reset at the factory. When they had me make a test call, voicemail, it dialed the old owner's phone number, and I actually spoke to them! When I explained it to him, he said "ohh...uh oh..." like he was pitying me for having his old phone. Out of curiosity, I googled the name, which revealed their myspace and facebook pages. I find this breach of privacy disgusting. Why is Sprint leaving so much personal data on their refurbished phones?
And I'd bet good money the other refurb I was sent, was originally sent in because of that damn broken trackball button, which they ignored and sent right back out as refurbished.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but right now I'm really disgusted with Sprint. Disgusted enough that the EVO looks a lot less enticing than it did a few days ago. :/
Thanks for reading.
-TM
Well, that's not very reassuring. If you don't already have one, I'd consider getting an account over at Sprint Users and putting it there as well. I'd not be happy having my phone go out full of my information!
Wow, this is really funny. I would definetly post at Sprint Users or Sprint Community Forums. Wonder if it is possible to wipe that data our selves before sending it back in. Seems like it would be difficult since Hands Free Activation pretty much populates all that info on the phone for you the first time you boot it up.
i hate the fact sprint takes these broken phones, fixes them and passes them off as new. the hero isn't even a year old and their doing this.
I had to get a refurb just this past Monday and before I took in my old phone I made sure to delete EVERYTHING. Although I really don't think it would hurt me too much for someone to be able to steal my identity.
This isnt something you would normally see. I had to edit what I was about to post. But phones are tested and remanufactured with new parts before being sent out. I would recomend if there is one close to you using a service and repair center for replacement rather than having them send one over the phone.... and you get the added bonus of not having to deal with the RMA kit

At no point ever, is an Advanced Exchange ever talked about as a "new" device. Every piece of literature anywhere says its a refurbished phone.. And a tech that tells you different is a liar..
Here you are again spreading lies to get a skewed point across..
I'm ashamed of myself for posting this because I'm so against it but this sounds like a case for bricking before submitting for a replacement.

Yeah, that's pretty much unacceptable. And it's not the first time it's happened, I've read about this before. I would call the news. Seriously. It's newsworthy. Maybe if Sprint feels a little heat on this issue, they'll be a bit more careful with their customer's privacy.
why would you brick a perfectly good phone because there is someone else's info in it? that's ridiculous. you can do into settings and factory reset yourself and you're good to go. no sense in killing a perfectly good phone for no reason....

I think he meant if he had to return his phone he would brick it. You know, so Sprint doesn't just pass it off to the next person as a "refurb" with all his info still in it.

I've read before that user data is stored in the mtd5 file or in mtd5ro. And i dont believe wiping clears out /dev/mtd/mtd5 and mtd5ro. But as nebenezer said you can always brick your phone, or possibly try
Code:
adb shell
rm -r /*
to delete everything. If you really wanted to.... or just delete the mtd5 files, if they actually are where userdata is stored.
So here is the thing.
When the phone is booted up - It polls the tower and says "HEY I'm MEID XXXXXXXXXXXX" - Then The phone says "HEY I DON'T HAVE ANY DATA WHAT THE HELL DO I CONNECT TO" and the Tower answers back "HERE IS ALL YOUR STUPID DATA NOW STFU" this is all of the login info and other stuff associated with the phones owner. The phone can now poll the tower for SMS, Calls, blah, blah, blah. THIS IS CALLED HANDS FREE ACTIVATION
Given overly simplfied.
Even after a phone has been completely reset out of the box brand spanking new. If the MEID is tied to a customer the phone populates automagically with that information. Thank you Sprint for this wonderful invention (which I think Verizon actually started)
So there really is no way to get all of your data off the phone since the phone will attempt to poll the data from the network once it is booted again. You need to make sure that the MEID is completly disassociated from your account to prevent it. Something Sprint has obviously failed at here.
Questions? None? Ok Good.
Kcarpenter, thanks for the explanation. The first phone I had did exactly that, immediately after booting it provisioned itself. The second phone however, did not. It just booted right up the home screen, where the HTC time/weather widget was already populated with the last known location. It appears the phone was never even turned on by Sprint after it was sent in to them. That raises even more disturbing questions regarding their refurbishing process. :/

The Process is very broken. I have heard this happen more than once.
In fact a story about me:
I bought a used phone from US Cellular, it was one of their "30 Day phones" that was only used for 30 Days by someone who didn't like it. I purchased the phone they set it up gave it to me. I got home and started playing with it and sure enough there where pictures on it of people I didn't know. I thought they may have been demo pictures, but I'll de damned if one of them was a naked black chick and another pic of a naked black dude. (not racial just not my thing). I was furious. I took the phone back and told them what had happened. They said it was impossible that had happened and the pictures where mine (Skiny pasty white guy) I had a few issues with this phones a few days later. Randomly dropping calls/signal/error messages. So I took it in to have it looked at. The water damage sensor had been lit up. No way this was my fault - the phone never left my desk at home because the damn thing didn't work worth a ****. They said this had to be my fault because they check this stuff before they sell the phone again. So I was out 200 bucks for a broken phone with pictures of ugly ass naked people on it.
Lesson Learned:
Drop US Cellular if you have them. If you ever by a used cell phone Check it thorughly for kiddie porn and water damage.

I'm about to rage on Best Buy for Zagg install

So I went to best buy a few hours ago to get a screen protector for my newly replace Evo. Sadly there was not much of a selection so I went with the Zagg invisible shield one. As I as about to go to the front to pay the mobile person said that he could install it for me if I wanted for $7. I said ok why not I hate installing screen protectors anyway. So he got it on and it was crooked so I told him that it's no good. He tried again and used more solution spray. I got a little worried about the amount he was using and told him maybe that's a little too much spray. He said don't worry it will be ok. Well flash forward to now, I just turned on my Evo and guess what? Solution leaked under the screen!!! I'm about to flip!

Honestly, sometimes it takes a push ... a verbal push, if you will. You know how many people probably have other people put screen protectors on - for whatever reason - and they just suck? And they just walk out with em?
Just being real.
There are people that won't stand for horse **** ... and there are others that will. It's not about "appearing" tough here or there ... it's like getting anything applied / installed and it not being right but "dealing with it." Shouldn't even have to ask. ****ing say something. LOL
Internet tough guy aside ... and you clearly jumped the gun.
Thanks though, I've seen you post before.\
edit: on that note; do you do anything but post bull**** and / or ask questions?
Honest question.
Because, honestly, I see nothing but - and in this case, nothing but a half decades old picture and bull****-run-of-the-mill-every-other-god-damn-forum-thread-post picture. And dude, you really did use that prematurely ... the bandwagon you're jumping on - this "internet tough guy" **** that has been going on for a while - AROUND HERE AT LEAST, is starting to get out of hand. In the way that people are starting to "diagnose" too much as such. It's a Forum. You clearly don't show up looking to impress the English Majors. So you post your cute pictures.
I hope you like mine.
Please, in the future, if you are going to TRY and be demonstrative ... don't post bull**** before the fact. Or at least as often as you do ... because, well, just ..... no.

True.
But, to be fair ... those "liquid" applicators can throw a first timer for a loop ... or whatever.
It can be daunting because you don't know how much / little to use. And I've seen people go overkill with that ish.
That being said ... yes, do it yourself. That's the best way. I mean, these assholes' as BB know little more - if anything - than you do. At least when it comes to their "mobile department."
With that being said about that being said ... should you be so worried, I've heard of others having them do it and when / if they **** up then they are obligated to grab a new one and begin again. If I saw dude doing the same one over and over I'd say something ... can never be embarrassed to question someone who should know what they're doing.
It was like a kid, asking someone to cut out a cut in their griptape ... once I started to work a shop ... **** that, I nailed it or if dude asked for something stupid I said do it themselves. Always worked. I mean, your average consumer can only be so competent.
Make sure the solution isn't just under the protector and will evaporate in a day or so, I've heard that in the past referring to these type of accessories.
i would try using ghost armor. its the best screen protector out there. i had my whole evo done in ghost armor. they use the same material on helicoptor blades to keep it from chipping from flying debre. and you get a lifetime replacement as long as you have your phone. google it for a store near you
Same thing
Happened to me, left a visible shadow like mark on my screen for over a month, out did eventually go away completely,
I also left fingerprints on it so I went to the mall and a zagg booth replaced and installed for only 5 bucks
Zagg makes a good product for protection, it does however seem to yellow after time, of course that could be the oil in. my hands doing that.
Also the feel of it isn't as smooth, it kinda interferes if your a swyper like me.
In closing I will say my phone doesn't have evan a blemish on it, looks as good as it does second week of launch.

How will detecting the theft sooner help? Chances are you still won't catch it in progress. Some of those guys are really good at it.
Lookout has a service where you can install the location software remotely, provided it is still on, in service and hasn't been wiped! Hopefully it's lost and not stolen and you get it back

Considering that this guy is enough of a lowlife to steal someone's phone, I would expect that he would post it on Craigslist immediately, especially as he lacks the charger to even charge the device (and probably would not recognize which phone or charger it is).
Just try to look on Craigslist and look at Vibrants. Be suspicious of any without a charger or box and ask him for the IMEI (on the box if you have it). If it is a match then the best thing to do is call the police and have them retrieve the device. Or you could just meet him with a baseball bat.

yep. After stealing my stolen phone, made a time machine with 80 vibrants mashed into 1 machine. Then i went back in time, when the guy who stole my phone was about to steal it, i grabbed him by the neck and dropped him on the floor. Later i called the police, and they didn't believe me that he was going to steal my phone, so i went to jail for a week. Then after getting out of jail, i knew my life's mission was to catch this guy and frame him for stealing my phone. I later googl'd his name, which i'd glanced at while the cops told me to put my hands up... So after googling his name i found where he lived.
I soon stalked him for 2 years, so i knew where he lived what he did, when he did anything. Unfortunately, the day i planned to frame him, He moved. So i followed him to Russia. After following him to Russia, I stalked him for 2 years, and knew for a fact he wouldn't move this time.
So i planned my attack

Hey OP, just hope the theif doesn't decide to smash it if you find him, and it ends up like this.

assuming the phone is on and hasnt been wiped or otherwise logged out of gmail that' a great idea. remember to get the baseball bat for when you find the thief or the low life he sold it to for crack money.
Hey guys. Thanks for the funny and helpful feedback. I saw the guy who stole my phone on the city bus (I knew it was him because he used to go to my high school until he got kicked out and someone as ignorant and clueless as him wouldn't be running MIUI and have a ffc installed on their phone) so I tried to get it back but got jumped by him and his friends (he's a GD). I pressed charges on him and they found those guys after they looked at the tapes from the bus and recognized them from times they've arrested them before. they're in jail for aggravated robbery (They took 30$ from me while jumping me). but I couldn't get my phone back due to lack of evidence that it was mine. (Got a replacement Vibrant with a different number on the box). It's a cruel world and all I ever do is try my hardest to spread love and respect to everyone I meet but it's people like them that make me wanna **** some **** up around here.

Parents--teaching them new technology is a pain in the a--!

My mother and father (69 and 70, respectively) have had very old and basic flip phones from AT&T Wireless for several years. Well, their service basically has sucked, and their monthly rates are way too much for what they have. So, my dad decided to do a major upgrade and get smart phones for him and my mom. Moreover, to save money--they're both retired--I recommended they go on my Sprint account and we get the family plan. I live 30 minutes from them and get a nice discount of 25% from Sprint, so everyone's overall costs would be less than what we currently pay. Plus, with a great promotion this week, I could get them a new HTC EVO and the Samsung EPIC at a total cost of $99 then two $50 rebates. Net cost = a credit of $1! Nice.
My mom demanded a slideout QWERTY keyboard; hence my recommending the EPIC. She didn't need the phone rooted, so I left hers as stock. I rooted my dad's EVO so his would be like mine and my sister's, whose I just also rooted. My brother in another state has a nonrooted EVO.
Well, I got the phones in Monday, worked on them yesterday (rooting, putting apps on, setting up some things for them, etc.) and today went to their house to sit them down and play Smart Phone Teacher for a day (well, for a few hours at least). As expected, things didn't go as I had hoped. My father? No big problem, because my sister can always help him since she has an EVO (she lives with them because she's a single mom, so she's there to assist him).
Well, got home about an hour ago. As I expected, it didn't go that well with my mom. She has all the patience of an ice cube in a frying pan set on high. My father is playing with his rooted EVO and seems to like it (he has always been a techie sort of guy, though he always ends up calling me for technical support--crap).
My mom just may be a lost cause. I was at their place at 1:00 p.m. I gave each of them their phones and tried to explain some basic stuff (what Android is, what these phones can do, etc.). Of course, my dad ignores me, toys around with his EVO, then just walks out and leaves to do other things. I remain with my mom to try and tell her how to do some stuff on the Epic (set up and check Emails, add contacts, make phone calls, send/receive text messages, go to the Internet, add/use apps, etc.). Of course, it didn't take her long to start *****ing about how she has "no patience for this crap." So I simply yelled at her and said, "Then learn to have some patience for a change and get into the 21st century!"
Within a couple hours, they had to leave for an early dinner engagement with her sister and brother-in-law (my aunt and uncle). Upon my parents' return, I was still at their house finishing up putting Warm2.2 on my sister's EVO and having dinner with her and her daughter, my niece.
My dad walks in and I hear him yelling at my mom, "...well, you can't get the old phone back. Learn how to use it!" They walk into the rec room and my mom tosses her phone down on the table near me *****ing, "Take this phone back. I don't want it. I don't have the patience to learn this!"
To this I retort, "You're frickin' retired. You have plenty of time to learn how to use it. You're just being lazy and not wanting to learn something new. Take the phone and the manual and go to your bedroom. Read the entire manual like you're reading a book so you can see just what the phone can and will do. When you're done, start playing around with it."
"I don't care. That won't work. I hate this touch thing. It doesn't work for me," she replies as she picks up the tossed phone and starts pressing wildly all over the screen. Of course, I have to tell her that she has to use the touch screen in a recommended manner. "You can't just go pressing anywhere on the screen to scroll around, because sometimes there's nothing to scroll or nothing to respond on the screen," I advised her.
I then reminded her that as a woman, she can't use her finger nails. She can use the slide out keyboard for that. I downloaded and installed both Iris and Vlingo for her, telling her that those apps might help do certain tasks that she otherwise would do using the touch screen or keyboard, but then she *****ed about having to learn those.
Unbelievable.

I told her that she had 14 days to decide if she wanted the phone. If not, then she'd get some basic flip phone with no Internet, no Email, no cool ring tones, and limited text messaging, among other absent, nice things.
Her biggest problem, again, is that she simply has ZERO patience (I'm not talking a little; I mean absolutely NONE). She won't listen; she won't pay attention; she assumes everything; she finishes my sentences when I try to explain things to her (it's like I'm playing a game of Mad Libs); then she *****es when she can't figure something out.
If I become anything like her, someone please--shoot me.

I had several browser tabs open on this forum (was working on multiple topics) and wasn't paying attention to the section, obviously. I requested a mod move this, as I hadn't intended to post it in this section.

Do you feel proud coming here spewing your tales of douchery and disrespect towards your mother? Have you considered the fact that not everyone can grasp the advancements in technology as fast as you? You should be ashamed of both the way you acted towards the woman that birthed/raised you, and the fact that you actually came here to tell us about it.

First, its Kommodore not Kommodo. Second I have a sense of humor, but not when it comes to bashing your mother for not being technically minded. You said yourself that they had a basic phone for years. And yet you think that only after a couple of hours of training she was going to be an expert?

Non-corporate stores: helpful

Yep.
Oftentimes we see advice to "go to a corporate store" or only deal with them for serious matters, but in fact, non-corporate stores can be a big help. Here in my area, the local corpstore got sold, and bought by a 'premium reseller'. With that, I found out yesterday, came a repair center. Awesome - I needed one. My headphone jack had become quite useless.
I went in, and within 20 minutes, one of the employees had replaced my headphone jack. No damage, no defects - 100% perfect. And much quicker than I expected. Thanks to TEP, I walked out without paying one red cent.
Why post this? Primarily to counterbalance the feedback on noncorp stores and Sprint repair centers that has come about here. Another user had his Epic all but destroyed by a sloppy solder job - quite unfortunate. But it's worth recognizing that such cases are a minority.
Fun fact: the employee who worked on my device built his Epic from a bunch of spare parts. Cool.
Andrew at the Auburn AL location: if you're reading this, thanks again. Got anything custom on your device? And did you notice I actually had both of Yelawolf's major releases ready in the music player?

I'm the guy who had his phone destroyed by a faulty solder job.
Despite that, I was forced to go back to the very same store with the replacement epic a week after when it's screen crapped out. I ended up getting a good chuckle with the repair tech (different guy) as he put the guts from my new phone into the case of my old phone I since it was still in their inventory. Now I have a frankenphone of my own lol.
Overall it was a good experience at the end of the day.

Neither did the guys at the store...or I for that matter, until phone number 3, hmmm).

I've been to 3 corporate stores and 2 non corporate in the last few days. Sadly none of them were able to help me out but all were courteous and helpful. I usually go to the non corporate store down the street when my Sprint phone (various) have needed service and they've done a wonderful job.
Back story on the current problem in case anyone has any advice. A few days ago my epic had a sad accident where the LCD has developed a crack causing it not display anything. ADB tells me the guts are fine and the gorilla glass doesn't have a mark on it. Sprint told me with TEP that screen replacement is free (IF they have a replacement screen around). Short of it no one has a replacement screen in Central Ohio it appears and no one will just order a screen. So it appears I'm stuck with the $100 deductible on the TEP... sucks
Asurion (I believe that is right) sent me a brand new phone with activation instructions and a return mailing envelope for my DOA phone. Just call the folks at customer service and explain to them your problem- no need to go anywhere, they should send it right to you..and you won't be without a phone for the RMA/repairs! I am sprint with TEP too, if that is what you are on they should do the same for you.

I just called Sprint Customer service..I dropped my phone and the screen wouldn't even come on, though touch was still active (could tell by haptic feedback). The Sprint CS will arrange it, not sure if calling Asurion direct would accomplish anything, I never did. As far as I can tell, they handle the warranty for the sprint TEP plans.
I no longer go corporate since the local reseller moved and upgraded its status and can now do almost everything corporates can. It saves me about 110 miles of driving.
Sent from my hoe. Forgive the typoes; it's an Epic.
