No MTP with my Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having problems transferring music files or any files for that matter to my Nexus 7. I have tried manually telling my computer to update driver to MTP USB device based on another thread but it comes up with "code 10/ This device cannot start."
I talked to Google and Asus directly last night for about an hour each troubleshooting but it didn't help. I know it's not my computer because I can plug my Galaxy S3 into my computer as an MTP device and it works just fine. My Nexus will connect to my computer if its a "Camera" but it will not let me transfer files in that mode.
Has anyone else had this issue?
any advice?

If you wish to transfer files two or from the nexus 7 I am pretty sure it has to be done wirelessly. I move files from my computer through airdroid. It is free and available in the play store.

just try plugging the device into some other PC so that you could identify whether the fault is with the PC or the Tablet.

Try this, going from memory here...
This applies if you have used adb wit your n7
plug in
Goto device manager
Locate the nexus 7, probably under android device, I think
Right click, update driver
Choose let me choose
I think the next screen lists a box to check for compatible hardware or something similar, Check it
Click the MTP driver selection and then proceed.
This may not be 100% correct, but hopefully you get the idea. I just got my n7's last night and did a lot of stuff yesterday. This being one of them

Wtf no edit with the xda app?
I just wanted to say I read it forces to pc to default to the MTP driver with this method

[Q] Phone not recognized, music not playable, in vehicle using USB

My vehicle has a USB input which I can plug media devices into. My last android phone was immediately recognized and I was able to scroll through and play music stored on the phone.
I get an "Unsupported" error message when plugging in my Nexus4, so I cant play music stored on it. I tested before and after rooting and bootloader-unlocking and factory reset. Also tested with usb debugging turned on and off. The vehicle is a 2010 Honda Pilot (touring model) with stock audio system.
Anyone else having this issue? Anyone have any ideas?
edit: I'd also simply be interested to know if you're successfully using your Nexus4 in your vehicle.
Have the same issue in my 2012 MINI Cooper Countryman.

I don't think it'll work as most car USB audio systems (in general, that I know off) would need the phone to be in USB drive mode for it to be able to read the mp3 files. The nexus4 uses MTP mode, which I don't think will work, unless the car audio system supports MTP.
Mine is only recognizing 3 songs, I am currently using aux in quality is sacrificed though

This is correct, based on what I learned since posting the question. Thanks.

It'll only work on Ford SYNC systems since it supports MTP.
Although I have a Ford car and I get stuck at Indexing...
I'm hoping a custom ROM will alleviate the issue but doubtful..

How is this not a bigger issue for people? I would much rather have one cord attached to my Nexus 4 in the car than two.

Not really a problem solved, but a way around:
http://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-BlueGate-Wireless-Bluetooth-Headphones/dp/B00727FE5U/
Just use the USB port for charging (like it should be used for), and stream your Audio over bluetooth. You won't even have to have an AUX cord coming from your Nexus 4. Perfect solution for a Nexus 4 mounted on the dash.

cant transfer pictures to computer?

I tried to connect my nexus 4 to my PC , but it would not recognize it under my computer like it should so I could drag and drop. I tried mounting it as MTP and PTP and neither would be recognised.
I ended up transferring my pictures using adb, but I don't know why it didn't work the standard way.
Anyone have any ideas?
Have you tried using drop box? It's really simple and automatic. Just set it to upload only on Wi-Fi

I've used it before but I want to know why the nexus 4 was not recognised by my computer
Is Android debugging on?
Is it having trouble with installing the MTP driver ? Try turning off USB debugging, I couldn't get MTP to work until I did that.

Maybe you've got the same problem that we have here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005437
Maybe you try:
A different USB port
A different USB cable
Uninstall existing drivers + installing the drivers again
A different computer
And if all that didn't help you can join us in the above mentioned thread. We don't have a solution yet but maybe we can draw some attention to the issue.
All the driver seem to be fine and the nexus 4 is recognised via adb. It used to work before so I don't what's wrong.
Edit: yes USB debugging was on
Ok, but that's actually good! What happens if you plug it into a different usb port?

It says your device could be faster with USB 2.0 and then it is not recognised.
Now that's really odd. Have you tried a different USB cable?

I'm using the stock lg cable. I'll try with my nexus 7 cable.
Edit with my nexus 7 cable it says connected by the windows 7 notification, but when I check in computer it does not show anything
But you have seen your N4 in the explorer before, right? I have seen my N4 on my GFs windows machine as Nexus 4, not as a storage device.

It shows up under devices and printers, but not under my computer
Edit:maybe it has to do with android 4.2 because I just plugged in a flash drive and it showed up under my computer
And what happens if you double-click it there? Can you get your pix then?
Edit: I didn't find my N4 as a storage device, so you can't find it as a letter in your explorer but a real device.

If I double click it it takes me to nexus 4 properties. My nexus 7 does not show up in my computer either that's what bled me to think it has to do with 4.2
Edit:nevrmind its not 4.2 because I just connected a lg motion which is running 4.0 and it does not show up either
Maybe someone with a win7 machine can chip in here, since I think it is a windows problem. I am on a linux laptop, so I can't really help you there. But good luck anyway!

Thanks for your help
By George, I fixed it I went into device manager I right clicked on SAMSUNG android phone then nexus 4 under that section, then I clicked update driver. Then I clicked on browse my computer for driver software after I clicked on let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer and I select mtp. The all of a sudden auto play came up with my device connected as a camera (ptp)
Now all my phones show up under my computer
MTP uses a completely different driver from ADB. So you can have one working but not the other.

Can't connect to a PC?

Hey y'all!
So far I'm loving this device but I have recently learned something that is quite irksome. I have done some quick Google-fu and haven't found a solution to this problem so hopefully you guys can help me out!
When I connect my 6P to my desktop, it installs the drivers, but it won't show up on my computer. I can't access any of the data. It charges but no actual transfer. I have changed the setting to MTP, tried installing new drivers, Android Debugging toggled (adb push works oddly enough), installing Google drivers, but nothing seems to work!
Also to note: My brother's Nexus 6 won't connect, and neither will my other brother's OnePlus One. It makes me think it has something to do with standard Android devices? I'm not sure.
I'm on Windows 8.1 FYI. Lemme know if you guys need anymore information!
Thanks in advance!
Try another PC, may be your PC has some issues.

Sounds computer related. I would uninstall all your Google, android, and whatever looks obvious drivers them restart your computer. Then reinstall Twrp drivers. Best of luck

It may be PC related but on marshmallow (6p at least) it asks you if you want to use it as file transfer device ,transferring pictures ,charging and all that jazz. Maybe you didn't see that screen on the phone?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Pull down the notification bar, and click on the notification which says something like, "38%, charging" or somesuch.. that will allow you to the change the USB mode to allow file transfers.
The default option is to charge, make sure you change it to MTP. This is a thorn in my side as I want the default option to be file transfer!
Can not connect nexus 6p to computer
I have turned on de bugging and set by usb connectuon to MTP from the default charge selection but I still can not get my computer to see the phone storage. When I plug into my computer it will install the drives even make the tone that its connected but I can not see the device under my explore? HELPPPPPP
I had to change it to PTP then back to MTP and disconnect and reconnect it to get MTP to work at all, just FYI.
I had to use my laptop just to be able to access files on the phone. For some reason my main desktop does not want to recognize the 6p, even after troubleshooting drivers etc.
You might want to check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/usb-storage-windows-t3244905/page2#post63750876, discussion has already been progressing.
Great Advice. Pulling down the notification bar. Mega cool

This post helped me figure out what I needed to do. Many thanks:highfive:
I had this problem and just needed to quickly transfer a couple of movie files to my laptop. Without getting too deep into what is obviously some sort of Marshmallow compatibility thing, here's what worked for me...
Switched to PTP and another set of drivers installed after which "Internal Storage" was recognized and I was able to access all contents of both "DCIM" and "Pictures" folders.
Then, using Explorer I simply moved the files I wanted to transfer to the "Pictures" folder and proceeded with my original intent. Problem Solved

Trouble connecting my Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime to my computer to transfer data

Trying to connect to computer and, when I connect, the computer (using Win7) doesn't detect the phone.
On the phone, when I drag down the notifications, it only states that the phone is charging, not that it's "Connected as a media device" like I've seen on many sites it should be saying.
I'd prefer not to reset the phone as I have image, music and video content that I've not been able to backup 'cause of that problem.
When going in the computer, in "Safely remove hardware and eject media", the phone isn't appearing either.
I already tried removing the battery, turning off/on the phone, different cables and different USB connectors on the computer.
Thanks for any help on that matter.
Pouksy
Download smart switch to back up your phone and it will also install USB drivers even if that doesn't work then if u have any other Samsung phone plug that in let it install the drivers ( if the phone is detected by the PC) then insert your phone from the same USB port. Even that doesn't work keep your phone connected to the PC and reboot it .

Doesn't work on my Windows 10 HP desktop even after adding the drivers supplied on the phone. It says failed to recognize. It errors on my Surface 2 tablet which is also on win10. It does read on there after the error though. Strange.
Yeah... Tried uninstalling my Oneplus 3 Drivers. Still shows up as "Malfunctioned". Where can I download the OP5 Drivers?

I am also having the exact same issues, tried different USB ports with it so far, going to try another computer soon. Also tried usb debugging bits too, nothing shows up apart from the message unrecognised after unplugging it...

Just tried a different computer and it worked fine from that one. Can't work out what the difference is between them unless something from my OP3 is stopping the OP5 working....
Try using an FTP Server app and Filezilla on your computer, that's how I usually transfer files, lets you browse them in a nice folder fashion too.
If you can also reserve a static IP address for the phone on your home network, that's even better
How about trying:
https://www.airdroid.com/
https://airmore.com/
All well and good offering alternatives such as airdroid or ftp but it isn't really solving the issue of not having the phone show up as a removable mtp drive when plugged in is it.....
I am going to try at home, my work PC is being a big pile of it regards usb connections anyway...
HEY! The drivers for OP5 were just released today
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...us-5-usb-drivers-adb-fastboot-drivers.554022/
OnePlus just confirmed this:
Upon checking this is a known issue for OnePlus 5. This was already reported to our technical team and as soon as we receive an update from them, we'll keep you posted through email.
so just keep on tight guys, will be solved soon
i own a one plus 5t & i can see lot of flaws in both camera's ..i compared the pictures taken in OP5T & nokia 6 ... OP5T pictures looks worst while camparing Nokia 6.. pictures doesnt have much details even though OP5T has 20+16mp camera... but nokia 6 has just 16mp camera in back...
