[Q] Phone not recognized, music not playable, in vehicle using USB - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My vehicle has a USB input which I can plug media devices into. My last android phone was immediately recognized and I was able to scroll through and play music stored on the phone.
I get an "Unsupported" error message when plugging in my Nexus4, so I cant play music stored on it. I tested before and after rooting and bootloader-unlocking and factory reset. Also tested with usb debugging turned on and off. The vehicle is a 2010 Honda Pilot (touring model) with stock audio system.
Anyone else having this issue? Anyone have any ideas?
edit: I'd also simply be interested to know if you're successfully using your Nexus4 in your vehicle.

Have the same issue in my 2012 MINI Cooper Countryman.

I don't think it'll work as most car USB audio systems (in general, that I know off) would need the phone to be in USB drive mode for it to be able to read the mp3 files. The nexus4 uses MTP mode, which I don't think will work, unless the car audio system supports MTP.

Mine is only recognizing 3 songs, I am currently using aux in quality is sacrificed though

This is correct, based on what I learned since posting the question. Thanks.
http://memegenerator.net/instance/30836647

It'll only work on Ford SYNC systems since it supports MTP.
Although I have a Ford car and I get stuck at Indexing...
I'm hoping a custom ROM will alleviate the issue but doubtful..

Dang... Still no solution?? There has got to be a hack out there somewhere that will allow audio transfer over MTP! Somebody help! Please?

How is this not a bigger issue for people? I would much rather have one cord attached to my Nexus 4 in the car than two.

Not really a problem solved, but a way around:
http://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-BlueGate-Wireless-Bluetooth-Headphones/dp/B00727FE5U/
Just use the USB port for charging (like it should be used for), and stream your Audio over bluetooth. You won't even have to have an AUX cord coming from your Nexus 4. Perfect solution for a Nexus 4 mounted on the dash.

[Q] Audi Music Interface AMI compatible?

Hi, I've just had a new Audi A4 with the AMI, I was hoping I could plug my Hero in and have it read it like it does for iPhone/iPod, but it doesn't seem to.
Is there any way of making the phone compatible with the AMI?
thanks
I don't know anything about AMI. Does it have Bluetooth A2DP? My BMW has this and I can pretty much stream any audio from my phone to my car's sound system.
it's got bluetooth and it downloaded my phonebook to use, but the AMI is a cable that plugs in to the phone
Turned off usb debugging. Also I found directories on my bmw cannot be too deep on sdcard

USB micro to USB 2.0

Has anyone tried to use a micro/full size usb male/female cable with the fire. I know it works with the xoom but how about the fire?
http://www.amazon.com/USB-Micro-Female-Male-Adaptor/dp/B0023FTRUO
No I can't say that I have, but this is very interesting indeed!
What would be the benefits? I'm technologically inept sometimes, but I am assuming you might be able to expand it's memory?
This has been tried. As far as I know, we are not aware whether or not the hardware supports this (usb to go) but we are sure the stock kindle kernal does not. A rom or kernal in the future may remedy this eventually, but as of now usb is only for pc to kindle data transfer and charging.
Edit: You asked about the benefits, I didn't mention them. You might be able to use card readers, flash frives, cd rom drives, bluetooth dongles, anything you can imagine (given the drivers). Sometimes you need a powered hub, depending on the device being plugged in. I wouldn't hold your breathe on getting this on the kindle. It seems unlikely to me, but some brilliant dev may work a miracle!

That is exactly what Kapurnicus tried to cover. The full size USB end is female so you can plug in USB cables that are normally meant to be used with a desktop or laptop. I just bought a similar adapter for my Nook Color and I will use it to pull photos directly from my camera, which will be especially useful on trips without a laptop for viewing and uploading. Being able to carry a really large music, movie and tv library on an external hard drive and switch out what I have on my tablet would be cool, but I don't really have that need. Keyboard and/or mouse could come in handy for some people. Lots of things can be done

Host mode support is not part of the stock kernel or any of the custom kernels yet, and it won't work until developers can get those parts configured and debugged to work with the Kindle.

Nexus 7 not recognised when connected via USB

Hi everyone,
My Nexus 7 at present isn't getting recognised when connected to a PC via USB. This was working the other week (the drivers were installed the first time I connected it via USB), but now when I connect it to a PC via USB the device isn't recognised by the PC.
I have tried this on multiple PC's and the same thing happens on all of them, so it must be something with the Nexus 7 that is causing the problem.
If I go into Device Manager on any of the PC's, with the Nexus 7 connected via USB it doesn't appear anywhere, so I can't go down the route of even updating the USB drivers as suggested for some similar issues on other threads.
I have even installed the Android SDK and installed the Windows USB driver package, but that hasn't done the trick either.
I have also tried installing the Microsoft MTP porting kit, but again this made no difference and the same can be said by switching between MTP and PTP mode and neither have made a difference. I don't have USB debugging enabled, enabling it doesn't make a difference either.
I can connect my Nexus S phone via USB without issue to any of the PC's I've tested the Nexus 7 on, which further backs my thinking of the issue being with the Nexus 7.
I'm running out of ideas, so thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone has any other suggestions before I do a factory reset on the Nexus 7.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Further to this I have done a factory reset, which has made no difference.
Any ideas other than going back to Google or Asus?
my N7 has trouble being recognized by different PCs. it is hit and miss. will your N7 charge when it's connected to a PC that doesn't recognize it? my N7 does not show the charging symbol on screen, but the battery percentage increases over time.
Also try a different cable just in case.

It's looking like a hardware fault of some sort as a factory reset made no difference. Think I will have no option to go back to Google/Asus

Try connecting it as a PTP device rather than MTP.. (that sometimes works for me when I am trying to force it to pick up the ADB device and install driver etc). If it detects it as PTP change it back (to MTP), and hopefully it will be OK.

I had already tried that, makes no difference unfortunately.
I had the same problem.
I knew it was driver issue but where to find the driver?? Looked on Asus' site and apparently the Nexus 7 is the Asus unwanted step-child. Not a mention of it there.
After a lot of looking and a lot of cursing,I found the answer! (It was the cursing that helped!) Install Windows Media Player v13. The needed driver is included. After a reboot, I was able to see the Nexus 7 on my PC and (more importantly) able to transfer files to it!
What happened
I have had the same problem with it not connecting. My n7 does charge when I plug it in but does not show up in my computer when i plug it in via usb. I have tried switching it to PTP mode but it does not find the device for what I'm doing(unlocking boot loader for my nexus 7) I hope someone can help greatly appreciated.

USB Connection To PC Not Detected
Having the same issue here. These two guys as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1851868&highlight=usb+connected Did you also use a car charger? Don't know when it happened for me, but sometime between it last working and testing car chargers it stopped working. Same thing for me as one of the posters says, USB-OTG works, so I would think it's not a physical issue, but how to reset it. Dunno, Any help would be appreciated.
ADB, Fastboot, or USB Connected device in Windows does not work. Computer doesn't even detect, no USB connect sound.
UPDATE:
Installed Glazed Jellybean v.1.1.2 thinking it might clearup the issues with detection of USB and presenting it to the PC. Still same results, USB data connectivity is missing somehow. Just might be some sort of physical damage. Kernel was updated as well to Linaro Motley Kernel v1.1.1.
Help!
I had this happen after using a car charger from amazon. I actually really believe that the charger is the problem, as I had originally got the charger for my recently departed tf101, and after using the charger on that, same problem as what's happening with my n7. Sure, there's workarounds, but it'd be nice to connect to pc for faster transfers.

Same As Above... This sucks.
I am having the exact same problems listed previously & I've tried almost all the same fix attempts with no luck. Like a couple others, mine worked out of the box, then I charged it in my car (using the Nexus 7 cable plugged in to a USB cigarette lighter adapter)... Now, nothing but the indication on the Nexus that it's charging. No indication at all that the computer is even aware a device is plugged in to it. Has anyone found anything? Please, Lord, say it's so!!
I found a fix
Whether this will work for everyone I am not sure.
I took the USB from the hub I was using & plugged it into one of the front ports on the actual tower unit. The drivers were reinstalled and everything is working again.
It may be the Nexus didn't like the hub or it may be that particular USB port threw a wobbler.

Thanks, but I've plugged my N7 in to 15+ usb ports on 3 different PCs & haven't gotten anywhere. No changes.
I did call ASUS support yesterday & was told by the tech support person that they were working on a "PC SYNC" software for the N7, but did not have a release date for it yet. I'm not very optimistic. The tech sounded like she could have been reading from a script. Didn't sound as if she knew what she was talking about. I may take my N7 back & get a replacement.

Hey, do you remember what charger you used? I tried two from Amazon, so I can't tell which one gave me the problems. Here they are:
Arcadia Rapiduo, 10W 5V/2A Dual Port high-speed USB car charger w/ Free Full Speed Micro-USB Charging Cable (IMP80C)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00845NI8E/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01

PowerGen Dual USB Port 2A 10w (fast) Heavy Duty Ouput Car Charger - White
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00622AG6S/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
Hell, if there are several of us that have damaged devices from these chargers maybe Amazon would help us to get our Nexus replaced.

It was this one at first, then I complained it didn't work, and they sent one that could've come from their own car, the way it looked.
And yes, I know it says "for Asus tf101".
Perhaps there's a "safety switch" of some sort, written into the os, that "shuts down" the ability to communicate through usb after using these car chargers? That may sound stupid, i know.
I don't think it's a pc problem, since the n7 still charges when connected, and also, because this has happened twice to me, with both my tf101 and my n7,directly after using these car chargers.
And, for some reason, I don't believe it has caused hardware damage to the n7. I kind of believe what I said in the first paragraph. Maybe this will happen to a dev, and they will look into the problem.
I suppose rma is an option, but patience is not my strong point.

I have 3 computers and 2 Nexus 7 in household, and one N7 has no problem being recognized by computers and the second N7 wont connect as a MTP device at all, on any computer, with many different cable and port combos. The second N7 was bought just a few days ago and I was not going to root and leave a virgin device, so it was essential to have access to sdcard with computer as storage device. Looks like I am taking it back for replacement...which is a shame because other than usb problem the second N7 was a perfect C70...my first N7 C70 has a minor screen lift, and after comparing the two tabs side by side, a slightly more washed out display.

This was my thoughts as well, thought some of the system files were altered in someway by either that process or my installing usb related apps. USB OTG and USB monitoring apps specifically. However, I decided to try an load Glazed Jelly Bean hoping it would resolve this issue by rewriting the system files, but it was still broken. This has now changed from a connectivity issue to a totally dead unit for me, it slowly started refusing to give a full charge and now not even a response while plugged into an AC Charger.

USB Mass Storage for Car Stereo

Just picked up the G2 a couple days ago. I've owned an Android before but never got into the rooting and rom flashing process. My problem is mostly that I used my iPhone in my car (a Kenwood head unit) for the stereo. I was able to control the music and sounds via the phone. However, the G2 doesn't work this way. Most I can get so far is the ability to select and play songs via the headunit, which with 1000+ songs is extremely inconvenient. I owned a Samsung Infuse years ago and that was able to work, but it was done by selecting USB Mass Storage I believe. I've done some research but I can't seem to find a straight answer on how to go about enabling that. Is there any way around this? It be awesome to be able to use my phone in the car.
What's the model of your car stereo? Maybe you can connect it with an AUX cable or Bluetooth, if your stereo supports it.

It's a Kenwood MP345-U. It does have an aux cable, however there is sound quality loss with that. Bluetooth I'm honestly not sure whether or not it has, I've read somewhere I can purchase a Bluetooth USB that the phone can connect to. My main concern was I was able to charge my phone before along with it pausing the music during a phone call, etc.

Since the phone can function only in media player mode (MTP), I don't think you can play it any other way than through the AUX cable. CWM recovery has the option of mounting internal storage as USB storage, but that's a highly, highly impractical solution.
You CAN do this but it is specific to CM ROMs. Probably 10.3. I don't know if its working on CM11 KitKat yet.
Its called USB Audio or something.
I'd also check out a Bluetooth solution if it would work. Then you could just plug in audio and use an NFC sticker to turn on BT and launch a music player. If you have a Verizon, you can also do wireless charging, so you can just drop your phone down on a mat and have everything just start working automatically.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There is only quality loss with anything OTHER than AUX. The AUX and only the AUX on this phone is capable of delivering 24bit audio. The downside is, well, 2 cords.

I did that. I enabled MTP fix rebooted and plugged in,what I did notice is that it seems to mount for a second or 2 sometimes and then it unmounts right away. I tried it on 2 work computers also and under my computer, the LG pops up as a drive for a quick second and then it un mounts. What the heck is going on.,I have screen shots of what is happening. It always pops up on the top of the screen with SD Card Unmounted when I tap the widget to mount. Something is causing it to Unmount it appears, any ideas?Since I Rooted the phone, when i hookup the usb cable it says that i am connected as installer, could that have anything to do with it?

USB Audio Note 4

Had Iphone 6 USB on my 2011 Buick Regal USB Audio worked flawless, my wife's phone LG G4 works great.
Got tired of apple & decided to go with Samsung Note 4 now I cant get it to work, tried multiple cables, update to Lollipop 5.0 & 5.1 & none of these worked.
Called Buick they said I should use AUX cable instead, obviously I did not like that response.
DoI need to root? or is this a lost cause.

I would post a link to a website with pictures and information about what you are talking about as I have no idea what that is.
Once I understand what exactly it is I might be able help.
Just guessing but are you talking about some kind of headphone cable that uses USB to connect instead of jack?

Link attached is the USB port in car, you plug in any IOS device or LG apparently & it picks up the audio being played.
The Bluetooth feature doesn't support audio, was relying on the USB port to play music in car over Google Play.
Before getting android I tried a Samsung S4 Active & it would appear it registered it but would immediately disconnect on both sides.
I figured it was hardware side as my wifes LG G4 worked perfect decided to switch my iPhone for a Note 4 & when I plug it in the USB nothing happens.

OK link is useless as I cannot click it.
Have you checked if the company you got the USB from makes any kind of app or driver to use on some android phones?
I can assure you Bluetooth audio works very well as I use it often with my Bluetooth speakers. I also used it to stream music to my Sony car stereo via Bluetooth.
I have never used the USB to stream music but I know that there is an app that does some thing to make phone simulate a USB stick so if you where to connect the phone via USB to a stereo deck it would play the music on the deck from the phone.

Sadly I cannot remember what it was called.

copy link & replace (Dot) with a . , 2011 Buick does not support Bluetooth audio.
I've heard of this app but it required root, I'd be willing to root the phone but the amount of Firmware & versions seems like asking for trouble.

Well I can't copy as I use tapatalk.
www.google.com
Easy to make a clickeble link.
OK so that buick thing is not the USB cable so I assume it's some kind of speaker system.
Regarding the root. Custom roms are much better then bloated stock roms in my opinion so it's well worth it and specially now that Note 5 ports are out.
Plus even if you wish to keep stock rom just rooting it will give you full ownership over your phone but nonrooted users can't really say the own there phones as both Samsung and phone company have more control over your phone then you ?
Anyways I strongly suggest you at least root the phone. No need to change firmware if you don't want to but the rooting process alone will give you unlimited freedom with the phone beyond the possibility of icrap can offer with jailbreak.

Do you stream through USB or using MTP & treat your Phone as a USB Storage?
EDIT:
I found this thread & I hope it will help you.
USB Flash Drive use in Audio System
There's a possibility that your Note 4 microSD card was formatted using exFAT & the "old" Buick USB system can't recognize it.
Try to use FAT32 (with its inferiority towards exFAT).
Another solution is using AUX (Draining Note 4 battery)
Last resort is using USB flash drive
NOTE:
Some system can only recognize limited size of USB storage.
Some are limited only to 4 GB, some can only read 32GB & won't read anything with larger capacity.

Sorry for asking this, but do you know what streaming means? (no offense )
If you are streaming the music, it means you are playing the music from your Mobile Phone & direct the sound out of it through either USB, Bluetooth or AUX.
So Streaming will drain your Phone battery.
Usually, car USB system doesn't do this.
Car USB system usually access any device connected through USB as a USB Mass Storage Device & then play the content using its own built in Audio System.
Have you checked the link I gave you?

My car USB does have this feature can play audio of a youtube vid, google play radio, pandora, ect over USB on selected devices it seems.
As stated above it works fine with an LG & IOS phones but has yet to work on Samsung.
Thought there could be a quick fix out there, but that doesnt seem to be the case.
More likely going to swap my phone out for an LG if I can find someone willing.
Worst case scenario I have a iphone 4 which I will use via hotspot in the car.

Do you mean that you play your media on your Car System?
If you do, then check your microSD.
May be your LG use FAT32 for its microSD & Note 4 use exFAT for its microSD.
Some 2011 car systems can't recognize exFAT filesystem.

Thanks for suggestion but it did not work, for the meantime using an Iphone 4 via hotspot for my normal commute I just use FM radio.
Was thinking maybe I can have hotspot automatically turn on when I'm in my car but that might be too much to ask for with current technology.
You win some, you lose some this one I lost no one interested in changing Note 4 for LG G4 in my area.
