Just like the title,which one you would prefer?
What I can see,the big upgrade from Mini 1 to Mini 2 is the display.It is now the so called retina display.But I think Mini 2 will cannibalize iPad Air because the only drawback in Mini 1 is display.

I like android as much as everyone here, but saying the N7 display is better than the apple retina display is just borderline mental...
and why compare something that's 2x the cost? how is that even fair...? If the N7 is $400, I'm pretty sure Google would've crammed better stuff into the tablet to compete with others around the $400 price range.
Well, this is kind of a biased question - most people here will be Nexus 7 fans (you know - we bought one).
That being said...
The cheapest Retina iPad mini is the 16GB WiFi at $400.
The 32 GB Nexus 7 + LTE is $350.
The closest equivalent iPad mini is $630...
That kind of sums it up for me.
I also prefer the N7's smaller size. I can carry it in my jacket pocket. I can't do that with the iPad mini. If I want to carry a bag - I'll carry a full sized tablet.

It's a fair comparison - they're both aimed at the same end users - people who want small, highly portable tablets.
As for the retina display being better - exactly what are your criteria for this? The N7 has a slightly lower DPI than the Retina iPad mini (319 vs 326). The mini has more actual pixels, but it's actually a larger screen (7.9 vs 7.0).
You're also arguing sort of backwards... you're suggesting that if the N7 were more expensive, it would have more in it (and thus be better competition for the iPad mini, I'm assuming). Except that's a weird way to look at it. The N7+LTE already is significantly cheaper than the nearest equivalent Retina iPad mini and offers a similar set of features. But if you drop down to the N7 you get more features - GPS is included.
The CPU in the Retina iPad mini is more powerful, but we've yet to see meaningful benchmarks to show that this translates into anything meaningful for the use. The whole 64bit vs 32bit is mostly smoke at the moment since almost nothing uses it.
And now that Android support BTLE, more and more companies are making Android apps for their BT devices, so we're catching up there.
The Retina iPad mini isn't a bad device, but it's simply not 80% better than the N7.

Lol...seriously? I can't....here you win.
As a fomer owner of all the iPad generations(til' 4th), I assure you no iPad will ever "seduce" me again with these "pretty" marketing money-grabbing devices. No way I'm going back to a closed OS... not after getting use to the liberty I have with Android, plus the Nexus 7 has really respectful features even thou is $100 cheaper.

Official specs from the apple store say 326 for the iPad Mini 2 and google play store says 323 for the Nexus 7-2. But my favorite PPI calculator website (http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html) says 324 for the iPad Mini 2. Might be that their display is actually a hair different than 7.9" (wasn't it 7.85"?) which would make it 326 again. Anyway, they are virtually identical. If you are interested in a larger display, Apple will give you that with the iPad Mini. But I'm pretty sure 8" high-res displays from Android makers are just around the corner, too.
Hardware is on par for these devices in my book. Nexus 7 is much cheaper still. So it comes down to your preference of iOS and the larger footprint.
IPad weight 40g more... No gps, no wireless charging and cost more for less.

I didn't believe you at first. I had to go check. I can see the reasoning behind not including GPS, but I think it's flawed. So much for offline navigation apps.

The big difference is the A7 processor found in the mini2. Although the N7s S4 Pro is good, the A7 is probably twice as fast.

Display consumption is better for the nexus 7, i saw in battery thread that someone reach 24h of screen on time in one charge.
With the ipad mini i think it's juste about 12hours in same condition.

2gb nexus 7
Ipad mini 2 has better screen, looks, processor, apps. N7 scores everywhere else.

Screen, debatable(hard for human eye to notice the ppi difference), looks, debatable(your personal preference), processor, yes(A7 supposedly is better), apps, debatable(depending on which apps you really use).
At the end is mostly about what you prefer
Hardware wise:
I prefer 16:10 over 4:3, better HD video playback experience. Other users might prefer 4:3
Nexus 7 is going to be significantly narrower & lighter, easier to hold single handed and can go into jacket pockets easier
Battery life should be about equal, although I have confidence Nexus 7 would come out ahead(as it already beats non-retina Mini)
Software wise:
Widgets, Launchers etc makes the Android Homescreen experience much more customization and enjoyable imo.
The openess of a Nexus 7 to ran various ROMs & kernels in addition to AOSP, something closed iOS can't compete.
Plus the Price difference of $170 ($229 vs $399)
Unless you really need a 7.9" 4:3 Tablet, I don't see how Ipad Mini appeals over Nexus 7. If you view Nexus 7 is too small, there are other HD android tablet such as the LG Gpad 8.3 (Pity its ppi is a bit lower and it isn't a Nexus).
170$ plus Tax...
So around 200$ difference.... Urgh,!

Hey guys I am a big fan of Android and am currently looking into getting a 7" tablet.
The only thing that is putting me off the Nexus 7 is the fact that the apps look like a enlarged version of the phone apps. I currently own a HTC One X and love it but was looking forward to a more native experience on the tablet. I am really keen on the Nexus 7 because of it's price but am also a little tempted by the iPad Mini's design and apps specifically made for tablets.
I just wanted your opinions on whether the larger tablet app selection on the iPad Mini is worth the $100 price difference between the two products? Are the enlarged phone apps on the Nexus 7 really that much of a deterrent? I am really confused at the moment and am hoping that your opinions on this issue combined with other arguments for the Nexus 7 or iPad Mini will help me in making a decision.

Something tells me you're not going to find many people in this thread who will say the iPad Mini is worth the $100 premium over the Nexus 7. The Nexus has better specs overall. Unless you have other reasons to consider the iPad (i.e. you have other iOS devices that could take advantage of iCloud), I can't see any reason to consider the iPad Mini
We have the N7(me) and the Ipad2(wife) in the home. Both are great gadgets but N7 is faster, smoother and has the superior os.
As for blown up phone apps its mostly a problem on the Ipad2 where the tiny 3.5 apps really look dreadful on the 10 screen. Most android apps are made for 4.3 screens and still look great on a 7.
Only arguments I can see for the Ipad mini is if you want an optical port out or the possibility of a sim card (I am not even certain that then mini will be getting those?).

You already have One x, then go for N7. That way, you only need to spend once for every app you like. More practical and economical too.

That's the reason I love Android. With iOS you need to buy a separate app for your iPhone and your iPad, prime example Borderlands for iOS, and many other "HD" games. With Android, you buy a game and it should work with all of your Android devices be it Tablets or phones.

Just went and got me a Nexus 7 and the girlfriend and iPad mini Friday. The only thing I think the iPad has one up on the n7 is the washed out colors. Other than that. IPad what?????

The iPad Mini is more expensive and runs iOS! IOS maybe stable but you can't customize it like you can android. The apps on the nexus 7 don't look enlarged at all, the only app I have found that does is SpeedTest.net app.
If you do get a nexus 7, I would reccommend you install the paranoid android ROM as it fixes all of the nexus' bugs.

Had a good look at the mini against the N7 myself.
The N7 is not built as well (though it appears to be getting better) and its screen is more washed out and smaller. Its also slightly heaver and slightly thicker and does not have a rear facing camera. It is also single band wi-fi, unlike the mini's dual band. However, its dpi is greater and its smaller and therefore easier to hold one handed or put in your pocket (not sure a bigger device would as the N7 is snug). The N7 has the more powerful innards and it uses a micro USB connector rather than a proprietary one, which means that you can get hard drives etc to connect more easily. The Nexus 7 has less apps, but it still has tens of thousands of them. The N7 is customisable, where as the Mini is not. Battery life for each is about the same.
One thing that is NOT the same is the price. A 32gb N7 with 3g is £239. An ipad mini of the same spec is £449. So, does £210 extra seem worth it for the ipad? For me it doesn't. But even if it did, I'd not get it as Apple have sucked of late in the way they have spent longer in a court room than in an R&D lab.
Even if you take out the price I would still buy the 7 over the mini. It has better specs and I couldn't ask for anything else for a tablet. Granted, it is a great looking tablet and build materials are top notch but it is not worth 100 dollars more than the 7.

I own a Nexus 7 and an iPad 2. Personally I think the form factor as well as the materials the NExus 7 is constructed from especially when you include the Specs and pricing make it far superior to the iPad Mini. The Mini seems a bit wide for the average person to put in their pocket, the display is also non-retina (I am sure apple did this to keep cost down) which equates to a less crisp display. When looking at a 7" screen this really matter as this will be your primary web consumption device. I love the plastic back of the NExus 7 because I can put it down anywhere without worrying about scratching. So far as native tablet apps, I used to think the same thing and after reading this post I put my Nexus 7 down next to my iPad 2 and what I realized was that of course Apple makes some apps that are beautiful to look at (SOME) but the Android apps FUNCTION much more efficiently. Look at apps like Pintrest, Funimation, Plex and others. They are just more functional on the Nexus 7 and android devices.
All that said, if you are very vested into the Apple ecosystem and don't have an iPAD then the mini may b what you need. If you already have an iPad don't be redundant with an inferior device, the iPOD is better than the iPAD mini. Grab the Nexus 7 and begin your consumption.

At great risk of exposing my ignorance of the Apple ecosystem, I think Apple had a very good reason to keep resolution at 1024x768, matching the IPad 2 4:3 format. This is not as good for movies, but it maintains compatibility with existing Apps. Apple Apps don't scale, so they would have to be re-coded if the resolution changed. Retina display icons would just be too small in this format.
I am sure we have enough Apple agents here to correct me if I am wrong.

I own an iPad 2 and a N7. I absolutely love the N7 due to its portability, it easily fits in my pocket and I can carry it everywhere. I know the iPad mini is smaller than its larger counterpart but it is still not pocketable. The N7 does have great specs but the major disappointment for me was the lack of quality tablet apps. I don't see the point of having a quad core processor if apps don't take advantage of it. Sure its great and everything but I would choose better apps over better specs. App Store > Google Play store.
Would you not kill for one of these??

i've been so on and off with 7' tablets ... half of me loves the ipad minis size .. the other half loves the amount of real estate of a 10'

ok, so this is a possible advantage compared to a 10" tablet.
but where's the (big) advantage in comparisson to a 5" smartphone?
to me it seems that there's no big difference in using a 5" smartphone or a 7" tablet (e.g. like you said on the airplane), but it's a lot of difference using a 5"/7" and 10".
so, owning a 5" smartphone and a 7" tablet means owning 2 medium-scale devices. owning a 5" smartphone (or a 7" tablet) means owning a small device and a large device.

there is a big difference IMO, 5'' fits in your pocket, not a 7'' tablet
over 5'', you see a noticeable display feeling, trust me, Galaxy Note 2 is huge in comparison of XZ, howver its only about 0,5 inches of size
smartphone becomes step by step bigger and bigger, tablet on the contrary will decrease size's screen

I think you are underestimating how much 2 inches reflect when it comes to screen sizes. Look at old BB devices with 2.5in screens and how they compared with 4in devices, take a 4in screen and put it next to the 5in of the Z...and taht is only 1in difference there. I did as I had a LG O2x 4in when i got my Z.

He's right. People tend to forget that the inches are measured diagonal not horizontal or vertical.
For example, four 2 inch screens fit in a 4 inch screen. And not two as most people think or imagine when picturing how large the phone would be.

Hi, just jumping into the discussion. I would also support the idea or a smaller tablet - in the end I would be happy with 7 or 8, doesn't matter
I am in love with this tablet. It checks on pretty much everything that I'm looking for. But one thing is holding me back from jumping the gun on October 10..... the price.
550 for a 16gb and 600 for a 32gb sounds like a no brainer. But I feel that it's a no small pocket change to drop on a tablet. I know the screen is crazy good and the s pen makes it head and shoulders over what's currently available. But I keep on trying to justify the reasoning for the 600 price tag.
I believe the thing that I keep going back to is the lack of tablet optimized apps for Android. Don't get me wrong, I've been pro android since the htc hd2, and I been through my share of samsung devices (got the note 2, 1st day it launched) . But I also had the original galaxy tab 10.1 and chose to get it early and paid the premium for it. Then it seemed within less than 4 months, the price dropped and continued to do so. And even though it was great for consuming videos and browsing the web I felt like the majority of the apps just didn't either scaled properly to the 10.1 form factor, or they weren't as polished as the iPad apps are.
I waited last week, to see what Microsoft was going to do with their newly redesigned surface pro 2, but it failed to excite me unlike the new 10.1 note is doing. If I could dual boot jellybean and windows on the surface pro 2, i'd probably look into that.
Maybe things have changed for the better on the tablet side for Android apps. But i ultimately ended up giving the tablet to my grandfather so he could Skype his grandkids and watch football. I just want to see what you guys's reasons were for being excited and early adopters and paying the premium price for early adoption.

Well for some, myself included, this is a luxury item and think the slight increase in price from last years model isn't that bad. For your money you would be buying the best tablet available (imo) and it will be quite the beast for your daily consumption, and it will also last for years. Its really a laptop without the keyboard that has much better battery life and is more portable in the scheme of things. I'm not a laptop person and rather a tablet for the things I want to do.Since Android is taking tablets serious these days its gotten and will be much better in the future since its proving to not be a niche item any longer. I'm really anxious to start seeing reviews in the next week or so in the meanwhile..... I guess you have some deciding to do and I just wanted to chime in.
I too am not a laptop person. I was taken back a little bit by the price when it was announced. I was hoping for the 32GB to be around $550. For me the extra $50 is ok for all the extras it comes with. But really what it boils down to is how much I use my current tablet.
My current tablet is the HP Touchpad with Cyanogenmod Android ICS installed. I am a desktop fanatic and was completely blown away by how much time I shifted from my desktop to the tablet. I am a news junkie and a Reddit.com reader so I get tons of use out of a device that is, in my opinion, perfectly set up for internet consumption.
All in all, I love the 10 inch tablet form factor and use it for hours every day so I feel the price is justified for me.
I really am liking the extra features that Samsung has added on top of Android, such as being able to run two apps side by side. After having the last two Transformers (Prime and Infinity) and having a ton of issues with their performance, this is will be the best premium tablet on the market, and that comes with a price. Sure you can get a laptop for that price, but if a tablet fits your needs better, it'll be hard to top this tablet. If you need to save some money, wait for the next Nexus device. If this tablet isnt in your budget, don't feel pressured to get the device. It is better to be straight financially than to stress over a luxury item.

Ultimately it all hinges on the S-pen. If that is useful to you I think this is an easy buy. If not you should probably look elsewhere, either the Nexus 10 or the iPad 4 .

i think even if the S-pen is bad, as long as that technology is in the tablet, you can use something like the bamboo FEEL by wacom to supplement the S-pen usage
This a premium product, it's going to be priced accordingly. I was honestly expecting $700, it's coming in under my expectations. This is a steal at this price.

Just make sure you get a microSD card, as the note, and most phones and tablets in general, only have a microSD slot, not a full SD card slot.

I think that is a little high priced by mabe $50 bucks. I have owned dozens of android tablets since version 1.5 and I have a nexus 7 2013 edition. I am looking forward to this one would have liked at least 64gb. I also have an ipad 4 that is the 128gb version it was $799 plus $99 insurance plus $40 case plus tax = about a grand. I love the apps on ios but i know you can do more on android. I would like to see android tablet apps like iOS apps and 128gb and up android tablets to be able to install lots of apps on as apps are only instalable on internal memory. I know I overpaid for my ipad but I don't think the price would be far off with a comparable memory spec android tablet.
Thats why there are different specifications and different price points... To serve the masses..

if you dont use the spen much id recommend something like the lg tablet coming out. Great size and specs with way less cost. Lots of tablets to fit almost any price range exist.

At the rate ASUS is going they will not be releasing the new infinity until 2014. Joking aside....I hear rumors its pushed back to mid-November though...something must be wrong. I'm not going to wait any longer for ASUS.

Where did you get price info for the tf701?? Because the tf700, at least at launch, was priced on par with the note 10, and that price didn't include the keyboard **** either, which case about $150 or so more.

I was researching and following the new Transformer tf701 for a bit and I think the consensus was that it would be $399 for just the tablet and $499 with dock for the base model but I'm not 100% on that and I think its unofficial...I could be wrong though

this price is on par for what i paid for my TF700 tho, so i'd believe it.
A standard point of ding in the reviews is the price, yet as example the 32GB version is the same price as the 32GB iPad and the 2014 has a micro sd slot and no proprietary connection. Build seems good and the display is at a minimum, as good as my iPad 4.
Seems the app ecosystem of the iPad gets treated as part of the package, so the price is given more slack than Android. JMO.
Simply put, you do not normally see Apple getting dinged on price in reviews. Seems a bias there. I agree it seems $50 too high for each model (ditto for iPads too), but would not ding it in a review for that.
There's a bias in tech reviews that things have to "catch up" to the iPhone or iPad. Any possible knocks on it will get brought out and highlighted.
I agree with your points, and that's ignoring the stylus that no other tablets have that turn it into a damn powerful art device. Of course I'd like it if it were a little cheaper but hey.

1 - A 16:9 screen not an out dated 4:3 design
2 - Wacom digitizer with S-Pen
3 - Dual screen or more and true multi-tasking.
4 - Micro SD storage up to 64GB
Maybe what should be said about the iPad is why is it only $50 less than a Samsung Galaxy Note10.1 when it's feature are more in line with the $399 nexus 10. or the $394 Kindle Fire HDX 8.9.

LOL. I still in my brain make them equal and null the $50. Yep, they are not the same price, hence the ding (the Apple/Nexus centric reviewers do not see value in the sd slot). Most tablet users probably would not use the pen function much, based on current install base without the function. Most just see the premium price and not the extra stuff they may not use.
I love my 128GB iPad 4 Wifi to bits, for browsing and its high quality App standard. But, having seen (and in some cases owned) a great deal of poor Android tablets this new Note 10.1 I would value at least as high as the iPad. Many Apps are still poor, browsing is less fun, but having seen the drawing capabilities, its light weight and compact size (given the large screen), its superb movie playing capability (from sd !!!) and zero lag in everyday use easily makes up for it. The people I have shown it to (and handled it for a bit) were all highly impressed. It cost me 599 euro, which I consider a steal for what it offers.

I think you nailed it here. People are overlooking the extra stuff and then complaining about the price. Yeah, it's true that most users don't care about the pen or the SD slot, but then that just means this isn't a product for them, not that it's overpriced.

I have the iPad 4 128gb as well, plus an Excite 7.7 32gb, TF300 (gave to wife) and Nook HD+ 32gb. I find I use my Nook HD+ more than the others due to form factor and the sweet display with Android. I was thinking of selling the Excite and HD+ and get the 2014, but will wait until the lag issues are resolved. I have lag issues with the HD+, but works great for everything except a very few resource heavy 3D games. Plus it costs $470 less than the 2014. Unless the lag mostly goes, I see no reason to change right now.
Right now, I use the HD+ and the iPad 4 and the Excite 7.7 is collecting dust. Toshiba IMO sucks for support, so will not get another product from them. Out of principle.

Perhaps the layered function of the S-Pen causes gpu bottleneck issue due to the display. Any way to turn off the S-pen function to mitigate lag (assuming that is the issue)?

You can turn it off but that isn't the issue, it's Software optimization. it doesn't lag for me at all

I truly have -zero- lag, so I am a bit amazed at how much coverage the issue gets. I am pretty sure there are no hardware differences to cause it, but besides maybe some extra/different provider dependent bloatware I suspect most of these people are just doing other stuff on it. Drawing on the 2014 Note 10.1 is working great, no S-pen problems there, the original launcher seemed fine but I exchanged it quickly to Apex. The internet browsers work a bit clunky compared to the iPad, for which I blame these browsers themselves (not the Note 10.1), I never use these "S note" features really so maybe the lag is somewhere there (??). The standard videoplayer is fine, but is short on audio format (=dts) support, so I'm using MX Player together with its downloadable NeoN-driver which is wonderful. In Settings I put the Screen mode on "Movie mode", got rid of all kinds of crap like Reading Mode, auto-brightness, etc. and enjoy awesome Live Wallpapers like awe-inspiring Ocean HD (with shark pack), Paperland, Paris winter, Star in the Sky and various others. Besides the overal Android App quality (and lack of 128GB, or more, micro-sd) I couldn't be happier with what I expect from it.
I would try it at a store and see for yourself.
i've been to two samsung stores and both samsung reps had no idea that the s pen is a pressure sensitive device. they gotta just be regular ass best buy guys with different shirts.
Will test one at Best Buy.

I think the pen is the biggest issue. I listened to the android police broadcast and the guy who reviewed it was really harsh and at the same time was saying that if you need a pen, this is the best device available. If you are used to the ipad's usage flow and don't use the pen, the advantages are harder to discern. Android has a big learning curve and most of Samsung's native apps have a lot of bloat. The best note-taking app is Lecture Notes and is a very dense program with a big learning curve. If you don't know how to check XDA's thread on the app and ask the developer questions; it can be a very difficult program to pick up.
Part of the appeal of tablets is that they are pickup and use devices and the Note is not quite that type of device.

The aspect ratio is actually 16:10. A 4:3 is actually not as much of a draw back at this size. For productivity uses, a shape that more closely mimics the dimensions of paper is superior.
I agree with all the rest of your points though. I still think $550 is too much though because of the weaker app market for android tablets and the poorer-quality materials used. The Note 10.1 is still made of cheap plastic and the Ipad is brushed aluminum and sturdy gorilla glass.
The ipad costs more because it was first to market and has brand name loyalty. It's also more stable and easier to use than most android tablets too. While the advantages of the iphone have diminished greatly over time due to the fact that android phones do a LOT of things better (especially with the larger-sized screens and the widgets); these advantages haven't translated as much on the tablet side of things. The GPU, CPU on the ipad has been faster for the most part and the battery life stellar whereas 10" android tablets have been really hit or miss. The 3 best 10" tablets were the transformer infinity, note 10.1, and Nexus 10 and all had their own issues last year (the note with its already dated display).
The Note 10.1 2014 I think is the first 10" tablet to take the fight to the ipad on even or better terms. Of course, the poor reviews and price aren't helping. They really should've left the base model at $499. I'm sure the bill of materials of the Note 10.1 2014 must be the same as last year (around $200). The SOC is used by their Note 3 and S4 international variants. I don't know how much it costs for a good 2560x1600 screen with a wacom digitizer of the same resolution. Probably a lot more since last year they didn't bother to go higher than 720p. Also the 10" tablet market is shrinking due to the nexus 7. Maybe they want to milk early adopters as much as possible because they don't know if they'll get any return.
I really hope 10" tabs don't fall by the wayside. I cannot stand 7" tabs. If you have a 4-5" phone and a 14-15" laptop, why wouldn't you want a 10" tab? A 7" tab is what I'd recommend to someone with a dumbphone. It's just too close to a phone size that having one would basically just be using my S3 with a bigger screen. At least on a full-size tab the user flow is different and you can ACTUALLY take advantage of the extra screen size.

Hence the issue for most reviews. The reason for the Note 10.1 IS the S Pen. If you have no use for an active stylus, this is a rather expensive tablet. The S Pen is why people buy it. I cannot imagine taking scientific / med notes w/o an active stylus, I need to be able to hand draw notes and equations.

The 2014 is a joy to grab and hold (apart from portrait mode, where a right-handed person will press buttons by accident), also within the limits of drawing, movie watching and the few good Apps Android has this is a hell of a device !!!

Nope, the screen and speed are its main attraction, closely followed by the S-pen (for those that use it).
Most of the garbage that is poured here on the forum (and in the reviews) about the Note 10.1 and its lag comes down to the poor state of Android, with its lousy internet browsers (compared to iPad) etc. etc. If you use this device for what it is great at I see its rating close to a 10 out of 10.
If you put an HD-version of Tinker Bell: Secret of the Wings and Monster University on the SD, play those through MX Player (with NeoN-driver) and show it to a 6 year old, or anybody really, they will very much want to hold / own it. It is pure eye candy, plain and simple. Its stereo speakers help somewhat.
The main market for a stylus I see as children and drawing enthousiasts and professionals, all of which the 2014 Note 10.1 covers. For business use and note taking the stylus imo is reasonable at best, though Samsung is pushing this hardest (as it is a big market).

The main reason why Android gained any ground is because they were the cheaper option. Poor build quality phones with a very laggy os in the early days.
Samsung still make poor quality phones/tablets but want to be like Apple with pricing. Even with 10gb ram and 1500gb memory this Note should be cheaper because it is a Samsung mobile device.

I have and use my Note 8 for work when I don't want to carry my Win 8 tablet, but this news of the Tegra Note for ~$200 is intriguing - especially with the performance the Tegra 4 will bring at that price. And stylus support? Wow! I'll have to wait and see what reviews will look like.

Honestly I prefer the side-by-side multiwindow that a rooted Touchwiz gives you, though, as that's pretty useful to me when I do use it for work (paired w/ the 2GB of RAM on the Note 8, to the 1GB on this device gives it some edge in the multitasking front as well).
Who knows, though? Due to Nvidia releasing this as a reference model, maybe some manufacturer will license it and sell w/ 2GB and someone figures out how to add the multi-window to it.
On a performance comparison, the Tegra 4 DESTROYS all the other android tablets in this price range, though. Also the footprint is smaller so it would actually fit better in some of my jacket pockets where the Note 8 wouldn't. Also - front mounted speakers!
Tegra note uses a passive stylus, Note 8 uses an active one. All of the features that make the Note 8 unique are not available to the Tegra note. It is no more competition to the Note than a Corolla is to a porsche, despite both being cars.

I pre-ordered an evga tegra note for my wife. Not sure when newegg is shipping- they show it out of stock already.
I don't think it is competition for the note 8, I know it is. My wife wanted a note taking tablet and I got the tegra instead of the note 8, which I use. Good pen input is the only reason to get a note 8, imo. If the tegra has decent pen input it will certainly give the note 8 a run for it's money.

By passive stylus do you mean capacitive? I know the Note series and Windows Surface use similar technology found in Wacom tablets, utilizing a digitizer. There doesn't seem to be much competition on the Android side for the Note tablets.

The only reason I bought the Note 8 was for the stylus and thr ability to project it to a big screen(MHL).
I didn't need the quad core processor and 2 gb ram. The work is not that demanding. The microHDMI on the tegra is much better than the MHL.
The Tegra Note seems like an ideal tablet, even 1 GB ram is ok, but I am concerned that the 7.0 inch size could feel a bit cramped.
I expect the Xolo Tegra note to launch in India for about 15K

The specs aren't as high as the Note 8, but I don't think folks will feel that as much as they feel the difference in price. The most important point of distinction is 7 vs 8. The 30% difference in viewing area really matters. Steve Jobs had it right when he said a 7 inch screen compromised a tablet's functionality.

The OP implied that the new Tegra tablet is competition for the Note. That's not the case based on the different styli alone. Anyone who want to write or create with a stylus needs a Wacom one. The iPad can utilize a stylus as well, but it's not the same.
But have you guys seen the last video from Nvidia? Shows a lag free writting and painting with Tegra Note and his stylus, with Galaxy Note we have a lot of lantency. I make beautiful landscapes with my galaxy note, in the start is very good, but it increase the lag as i paint the landscape.
The Note 8.0 is far superior despite anything Anandtech claims. I have no lag with my stylus, and neither have other online reviews.
Plus every 7 inch tablet is crap compared to an 8 inch.

After watching the Nvidia made video demo of it on youtube, the guy tries to act like the tablet apps are Nvidia apps, but they are not. He even demos that "Write" app, which to me looks like his stylus lags when he writes. There is no way its better than the pen on the Samsung Note tablets.
There is also no way a nub tip like that will feel like a pen when writing. But this is just my opinion.

the lag may be due to settings. you can set the pen/stylus lag, (lag is a lot less than compared to Samsung). not sure about note taking, but the TegraN7 is decent in this area. the drawing app seems much better.
i do feel that the stylus for general touch screen use on the TegraN7 is much more responsive than any Samsung i've tried.
Does anyone here have hands on experience with both devices? If Tegra note can provide decent stylus based writing and drawing support (even with capacitative styluses) it's going to be a big deal for student population looking for note-taking and sketching aid...

I was looking for something else when I stumbled across this thread so I thought I'd weigh in. I've had an Advent Tegra Note for a day or so now.... Firstly, it's very fast. It makes my Note 2 feel a bit anaemic. However, the screen is poor. I don't mind the resolution but the back light is uneven and colours are very bland. Whites look kind of creamy yellow like an AMOLED panel, but it lacks the punchy colours to make up for that so it just looks bland. My partner's Tab 3 8.0 has a far superior screen in comparison, even though the DPI is lower. This is also my first vanilla android device and I have to say I think it sucks. I think I'd rather have Samsung or HTC's bloatware on balance.The stylus is very responsive, more so than on my Note 2, but of course you just don't have the apps and system wide integration on board out of the box to fully take advantage of it.
Did I mention how fast it is? That really does make up for it so far. It's like a battered old car painted in grey primer that has a v12 engine hidden under the hood. And it's cheap!
I would go with galaxy note 8.0

I would go with galaxy note 8.0 because there are a lot more features it comes with. Also the screen colors do look better and I think it is plenty sharp enough for it size as in resolution so thing will still look good. The tablet is still really fast and should be smooth in hardcore gaming. Also if you really wanted stock android for the launcher (home screen and app drawer) you can just download a custom launcher like apex launcher or nova launcher to customize so it looks just like stock android. which is what I do. And coming from stock android , it gets a little boring after a while so that is why I also use launchers to make different themes.
I've had my Note 8 for awhile now, and like i said in my first post, i think it's great. It is getting to be an older model now and if i was looking to buy one, that factor would lower it on my list considering how fast Samsung abandons its models for upgrades. With ART coming soon to replace Dalvik and the potential performance gains that come with that, i'd want to invest in a device that has a good chance of getting it. One thing i don't trust Samsung for is keeping older devices current with Android versions.

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. This tablet is significantly more expensive thanks to the included active stylus technology. A 16GB version of this tablet will run $359 or so.

I have both. The tegra 7 will be a xmas gift, but I've been doing heavy testing, including playing games on it that note 8 can't even play. Really hate to say it but the tegra note 7 is better in every way except the stylus stylus interface for writing. For art applications they nearly equal. Writing is not that great on the 8, though, so the 8 been a big waste of money for what was a business investment for me. I have had other issues with the 8. I also have s S4, and the Samsung gimmicks you mentioned are not usable in my experience. I am unhappy about the fact that the Tegra Note is superior, but I will still relinquish it Xmas morning to its intended recipient. Again, due to several issues with the Note 8, I cannot even use it for its intended use a business tool.

Please share your specific observations particularly with how you think the Tegra Note is better than the Note 8 in writing and almost equal in art or drawing as there are some here who automatically thought otherwise without even trying it out. Seems they are quick to condemn it as if they are threatened by this cheaper yet more powerful competition.
The thing I'm curious about is that difference in RAM. i know as I'm painting with the Note8, and there are more and more strokes on the picture as the piece progresses, it does start to lag and slow down. The Tegra Note is faster, yet has half of the RAM, so maybe it's still susceptible to this issue or worse?

Well it can do most basic purpose you require a bulky laptop for. I.e Internet browsing, facebook, twitter, watching movies, youtube, playing games, blogs, reading books, taking notes, chat, voice call, video call etc.

I think the specs you cite are not for the $200 evga tegra note 7, which has
-microsd
-1 gig ram
- micro sd
- 1200 x 800 ips
-1.8 ghz tegra4 quad
there aren't custom roms yet, but it's rootable and the bootloader can be unlocked. it shares a lot with the nvidia shield, enough that root tools and other work is greatly aided.
I'm using an hp slate 8 just now - same soc, 8 inch, 1600 x 1200 display, no stylus included.
I had it rooted a few hours out of the box and and bootloader unlocked within a day.
It is a benchmark beast, 16k quadrant, 3500 or so on geekbench 2
I'm very curious to get my hands on the nvidia stylus and apps. The aspect ratio is great for me. it is heavy - about a pound - and has a battery about 25% larger than than the note. Time will tell how much that really means.
No ir blaster and no smart wake and a very hard to find/press power button are annoying. I wish it had cap buttons on the bezel, plenty of room for them.
Color accuracy is better on the Samsung - I've been struck by that in comparison to every other tab, using photos I took myself.
Speakers are better on the note - louder and/or better ported.
The hdmi out is going to be very helpful on the hp.
