Maybe a new owner - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im about to swap my Iphone 5 for an s4
having owned HTC ONE, Note 2, Xperia z before, i terribly miss Android...
My concern for the s4 is memory space, I've read that only 9GB are available
also battery life is meant to be less than the HTC ONE is this true
and people have said stear clear as the s4 lags like crazy
hopefully im making the right decision, any advise would be great

Memory is ~ 9 GB , it's right. I don't have a HTC One but I can say the S4 Battery is ok. I don't know if you will stay on stock or you will root and use custom roms/kernel , with original stock you can come on 4-5 hours screen on time, with custom roms and kernel more ( my own experience , every user and phone are different )
About lags I can't say anything,I never use stock roms , with aosp I have no lags.

9GB blimey thats pants, coming form a 64GB Iphone...eek, can you install apps on the SD card?

It's enough, you can use a external SD Card you can move apps to SD yes ( I think with stock it's possible too but as I say I never use stock roms ). I never need it, I have 200+apps on my phone ,a lot of backups, pictures and more and never had problems with space only music is on my external card. For me personal the space is enough

Thanks, apparently he is throwing in a 64gb card, so thats handy, I am interested in the Samsung more, as we have just got a Samsung Smart TV, so im hoping I can utilise some of the features etc...

I would say Samsung is a good choice and all in all I think you will like it I use the most time nexus phones ( I am a aosp freak ) but as second phone I use to 95 percent Samsung phones.

I switched a while back from 5 to S4.
And my conclusion is that I can do whatever i want with the phone

I would say that new firmware has bought the new Knox bootloaders on them. Again certain things will trigger the Knox warranty status making Knox useless but apparently also making the warranty useless and you can't reverse this not yet anyway if you trigger the flag. Bare that in mind if warranty is something that is crucial.

I dont care about the Knox.
When there will be a hardwarematic problem with my s4 I will repair it self.
I dont need Samsung or Apple for this. (I owned more then 10 iPhones in the past without any need of the customer service)

Iphones are so overated with iOS 7 and the animations that go with the new os. touchwiz lag will be unnoticeable compared to that, but a good thing is you can turn off all the animations which in iphones you cant plus turn off s-voice via home key and it'll fly. If I was you I'd trade it for a 32 gig. I traded my 16 gig iPhone 5 for a 32 gig. But I mean the deal is on the table now and a 64 gig SD card with apps to SD is helpful. Plus rooting an adding a ROM makes it much better.

Like everyone above said, you can install apps on the SD card. Also it works nicely with samsung smart tvs (Allshare and tv remote controls via WatchON app). I'm currently running Omega v13 ROM and theres no lag whatsoever.

Thanks for all your advice, best response from any post I've had on these forums. Thanks for not just telling me to google it.
Must admit I'm quite excited about having so many sensors. Like barometer, temp, proximity. Are there apps that utilise these.

Oh it seems the S4 is locked to EE, i need it to run with o2/giffgaff, is it easy to unlock these s4's, with iphones its a nightmare, should I not do the swap

I can't really say because I'm in the US but even if we unlocked a phone say att for Verizon or vice versa we wouldn't be able to utilize the data plan like a carrier based phone. So say you got LTE on att phone but att won't allow you to bring an unlocked Verizon phone to att you can still get service make phone calls but you won't be able to get LTE and its just a headache to deal with. If I was you I'd shop around some more and see if you can get your carriers s4.

quick decision guys

worth getting the tab 2 7.0
Any known issues etc?
need to put a bid in ebay few hours left
the thread that this is discussed is prob so way back -- i havent located it yet
Tia
What do you want it for ?
Are you going to root/use a custom ROM ?
For general use the tabs ok, nothing special. Some nice ROMS available for it. All depends on what you want to use it for and how far you are willing to customize it !
Your not in London are you ? I'm looking to sell my tab :laugh: (P3113 WiFi only , white ,8GB)

as a replacement for my desire ( which i used as a second phone) primary use will be just to browse the net...maybe occasional calls but unlikely..
rooting wise - very noob at that so prob will leave it as standard
Its a little good tab , Plays most media out of the box. Think you'll get Ice Cream Sandwich on it ...Most recent ROM is JellyBean. The official updates are very slow from Samsung. You wont get all the top games for it on Google play but have a massive selection to choose from. I cant think of any bugs as such , although it gets a little laggy at times using a stock ROM, hence Root/Custom ROMs but its up to you.
You will get tons of Samsung's bloatware added to the ROM and it uses up space ... you have an external SD Card slot but you cant install apps on it.Its for media only.So space could become an issue over time. Another good reason to Root.You can flash an deodexed stock ROM back on to it with all the crap removed.
You will get plenty of support on the SGT7 forum, most users are friendly and very helpful. Just noticed the calls ... you want a P3100 , cant comment on the phone side of it as I'm WiFi only.
Its a nice tablet but if my 3113 wasnt a gift, id rather have gone with a 16gb Nexus not only for the Google support but the storage size as well. That measly 5gb available for storage goes quick. The sd card slot is almost a waste unless you download alot of crap or want to store roms on it.

storage for me isnt really an issue as im not really into playing games etc......
just wanting to know if as a whole package its worth paying for..
If you are getting it cheap , its worth it. Personally Id get a Nexus 7 but I've got the "Droid bug" , hence me upgrading to a Nexus 7 (32 GB WiFi) ( Same price as a new Samsung equivalent tablet)But out of the box the SGT2 7 works as its meant to.
Samsung has made a nice job of the ROM you get. Nice apps like the media player are good. Nice well made widgets as well, Chrome works well on the tab and the default browser is ok, The default e mail links to your accounts. WiFi works good.Obviously Google Apps are installed already.
All in all its not a bad tab , just better ones are out for a similar price now. I'm sure a lot of us regret buying this Tab and not getting/waiting for the Nexus 7...but that's the way it works and how technology is now days.
End of the day its your choice. :laugh:
Ok, i own a 3g one so...

i have the 3g tab 2 7.0, and I'm loving it!!
i seldom use it as a phone since i have had a GS3 already
after upgrading it to jelly bean i find it really smooth and responsive!!
the storage is enough for me because i moved most of my game data to the external sd card
the only thing i think isn't so gd is the resolution of the LCD
compare with the 720p amoled of the GS3 i think 1024x600 is quite fuzzy...
however i really recommend you to try it yourself, as the nexus 7 is also a very good choice of performance

[Q] Why downgrade your s4?

This isn't really a question, a little more like a long rant. So I see here and other sections where people are asking when cm10.1, AOKP, and similar roms will come out for the s4. Why would you want to do this to your phone? If you want cm10.1 you mine as well get a nexus phone because what it's made for. I could you switching from touchwiz 4.0 to 4.2 cm10.1. But switching from 4.2 touchwiz to 4.2 cm10.1 is stopping your phone from being at it's full potential. My question to you is why? Why do you want to downgrade your s4?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have many app ideas, but don't have the skill or the time to learn how to make an app. if you would like to know an idea and attempt to make one, just message me.
Because we can or want? Because we dont like TW or want vanilla with a good cam? Do we really need a reason?
Skickat från min Nexus 7 via Tapatalk 2
Never used touch wiz but from seeing people's phones messing with them for a bit it seeks like crap
With that said I got the s4 because it will have much better battery life that my Nexus 4 and I'll be able to replace battery when it depletes which Ai need for work
I'll stick with stock until a new Android version arrives. I'll flash the new CM until Samsung stock updates. I'll go back to stock until there is a new Android version. And so on....
Similar to above, my strategy is just to roll with stock for a year, and if I haven't upgraded to another phone and plan to keep using my GS4, but updates are coming slow, then I'll use CM. That's really all I care for, since the S4 is pretty fast even with TW, and battery is easily accommodated.
I would call it a upgrade, not a downgrade. CM will give more smooth experience, better battery life, alot faster updates, better aosp browser, better messaging and contact app, better costomization, more space left for the phone (not "only 9gb left" like touchwiz), better ram optimization, better overall user experience.
And ye, I dont care about all the bloatware and gimmicks Samsung give us. It slow down the phone and you'll only get frustrated.
Btw thanks to all the beloved CM developers who using their sparetime for giving us choices.
Originally I wasn't planning to use any custom roms on my S4, but hearing about the lack of smoothness is tempting me to. A fast and lag-free UI is important to me, so flashing a rom that provides that would not be a "downgrade" for me. Besides, I'm mostly indifferent to touchwiz features except for possibly multi-window, and it'd be nice to get rid of both Samsung and carrier bloatware. What's it to you though?
for me, first and foremost the smaller memory print on my sd card. 9 GBYTE out of 16 is ridiculous.
if it doesn't support a 64 bit Filesystem for my sd card, I won't install it.
Samsung ROMs on my S3 never let me down. Plus a lot of extra features. Compared with my Nexus 7 which is running almost perfect on a AOSP Rom.
The "9gb issue" is easily fixable, like most providers they want to add extra apps (bloatware) that you don't need (unless you desire), all you have to do is get rid of the things you dont want or need. That will give you a ton of space.
Most bloatware apps can only be disabled, not uninstalled. And I'm puzzled why you have an issue with what people install on their own phones. Isn't it possible that many people like the Galaxy S4's hardware but not its software?
Of course you will be able to get rid of the bloatware...just root it, and install titanium backup...off ya go...
Space, quicker updates, more aesthetically pleasing to me UI.
Developers have lives. plus if you read CMs site and blogs and posts you'll see that schoolwork comes first for a couple of them, plus they probably won't bother with the Note 3 until KitKat is released... If you are that desperately craving AOSP why did you buy a Samsung device? A company that is notoriously slow with updates/ROM stuff etc.... - Just sell it and go buy a Nexus.
Aosp stands for android open source project. Aka stock android.
That's the answer. Samdung has an absolutely horrible history in the Open Source community, and it's not getting better anytime soon. Anybody who wants AOSP/CM ROMS should NEVER buy a Samdung device.
They do make great devices, but they have the worst attitude toward the dev community, routinely providing incomplete and/or outdated sources and/or the absolutely bare minimum required for a questionable level of GPL compliance, and they'll never provide userspace drivers, which is where 90% of the problems are in supporting their devices.
It's just a reality, and anyone hoping for full compliance and an open and friendly attitude toward AOSP/CM community is delusional.
Give me an SD Card option or at least 64GB option and I will do it asap, that's all i ask, i don't even need removable battery and 5.7 inch screen, just SDCard or bigger storage option and powerful processor(Snap 800 is fine!). Please don't tell me about "mighty cloud services" i want normal storage for my music.
But guys tell me one thing, there is no such thing like Galaxy Note 2 google edition and there is a CM rom, there is no LG G2. Sony Z1 and others Google edition roms, and they have CM or any other stock android variations literally DAYS after release, note has none, totally, literally, NOTHING. Why no love for note ? I really don't get it. :crying:
Few people are ready to give up the support for S-Pen and adopt AOSP based roms. Besides the S-Pen is the main reason people buy the note series.
I actually bought the phone because it makes an awesome reading device. I only used s pen to try it out. i yet have to find the killer feature I would use it more often for.
I'm rooted, added a different launcher and some widgets and it comes now pretty close to what I wanted. If you want other roms, be patient. It took long for the razr HD but I finally put pacman rom on it. So I'd say it comes down to what you really want. If the latest FW is top priority you have to live with small onboard memory. I prefer the big screen and have all my apps and music right on the phone on a 64gb sd card including navigation and maps. I can't stand all this cloud stuff for different reasons, the biggest one being privacy. But these are just my 2 cent.
Pretty same as me, i just need storage for all my music and i was really tired because my iphone 4 32GB was almost always fullfiled to the max, I hate deleting and need to choose between tracks. The S-Pen is working, i don't know what's about that, note 2 has tons of AOSP ROMs and many peoples are fine with that.
Same reasons here. But big screen in a small frame was what sold it. Almost got the oppo, but besel and weight made note3 the best hardware. Figured the snapdragon would make this device fully aosp supported, but so far no love.
SPen..? I've got gmd pen gestures, papyrus, better screenshot, etc. I can easily have all the "tw functions" i need on an aosp rom. Samsung has nothing that I can't get better versions of through play
Imagine this hardware and omnirom.. I can't wait, and as soon as an alfa is out I'm on it..
Pacman is not for the Note 3 yet. I wrote that it took a while until it came to my Motorola Razr HD.
I would absolutely LOVE an AOSP stock rom for my Note 3. Something like the google play edition of the S4 would be perfect... really surprised this has not been done yet, especially with the hardcore specs of the Note 3, hopefully OmniROM will provide our needs!
Thanks, this is the only thing holding me back from getting the note 3
Why I am planning to NOT root my awesome Note 3
I used to root all my devices, my S2, my note 2, but not my note 3, and here's why.
1. I used to hate TouchWiz, but now with all the new features like air gestures, S pen features, smart stay, IR blaster, etc, and the updated more "Realistic" look to it, i will have no need to switch to AOSP, even if it is smoother, i have 3gb RAM anyways (Oh GOD do I LOVE the 3gb of ram!!)
2. Dam KNOX!! Y U DO DIS!! Y U VOID MY WARRANTY!?
3. I own a Rogers note 3, and a mac. No way to root it yet with a rogers note 3 and a mac
4. I will lose features if i switch to AOSP, and if i switch to another TW custom ROM it would most likely have some bugs that the stock one doesn't have.
5. DAT CAMERA.
6. Bricked phone once, softbricked a couple of times, and let me tell you, first time i bricked, i couldn't sleep for 2 whole nights. And always paranoid when rebooting phone that a bootloop would happen or something.
7. No need to overclock or change kernel, i am more than happy with my high-end device right now thank you very much.
8. Worry-free!!! I will never have to worry again!! Sometimes i think to myself why i always root my phone and mess something up, and always have to heimdall back to stock.
9. I own a GALAXY GEAR!! Switching roms may risk making my gear UN-USABLE!! Which SUCKS!! paid 300+ bucks for this thing!!!
10. I am plenty happy with my phone and don't plan to mess it up anytime soon. I love my stock Note 3, and my Galaxy gear too
Agreed...i mean half the stuff he mentions has no bearing on root whatsoever...and to keep
Knox when we don't even have the option to run the encrypted dual boot partition makes no sense. Plus i also have a gear, and its also rooted...i take it he either has never rooted or has no clue what rooting actually does. He mistakes romming with rooting, and makes it seem like rooting is somehow capable of breaking functions like bluetooth???
Not trying to be a jerk, but posting this list is irresponsible and counter to the foundation xda is built upon. Your basically posting this as a justification for not rooting, but why, why not just not root...what's the point of this post at all?
Many noobs or first time rooters will see this and be confused thinking your mistakes and errors that caused the brick, or mixing up root and rom are the norm or cause for concern, and neither are true.
strait up...root does nothing more than "root" level access, or basically full access to your device aallow in you the OPTION to remove apps or customize your device. It in no way breaks bluetooth, or affects your launcher (touchwiz) as is being alluded to.
Mega
This phone is pretty damn powerful even with a ton of bloatwares running in the background. I can see that this might be the reason why some don't feel the need to root and modify their note 3. But if you say avoiding root because you want to keep your phone perfectly functional, then I don't understand the reasoning here. Root doesn't render the phone useless, it is what you do after you root it that bricks or damages it. You can root this phone and keep all the S functions you want, add more stuffs to it and the phone will still be perfectly functioning, but of course it is a personal thing.
I personally rooted this phone, modified a lot of things before I even put the new sim card in and activated it. This phone is pretty powerful by stock, but I like to mess with it, and I usually read up a lot of posts before I do anything crazy, and I always have odin next to me when I do it. So far nothing is damaged and the phone is running xnote with all the S functions running smoothly.
Sounds like someone needs to do a little research that's all.
You will change your mind
If for nothing else then just to remove all the bloat. After I removed all the bloat my ram usage has been around 1gb out 2.xx gb. And my battery life has been GREAT. I get 7 hours+ with about 24+ standby.
Here is my script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2587899 (if you change your mind
I've been doing this since finding rsd lite was like warez and you had to do hex edits, and rooted day one. I think my phone is more functional and has enough customization to make it as individual as I am. It's your choice to root or not, but I agree with the post above you might give the newer members the wrong idea.
Not sure what value this thread has now that it has been said...nor what it has towards development.
kitkat update is just a junk... don't update.
Hello friends
Many note 10.1 owners were waiting for kitkat update
Now its available...
But its a total junk
I would recommend pls don't update it
Its trim down many of its essential features for nothing
1. Lock screen is ugly now there is no option to reduce size of giant missed notifications,
app shortcuts is on right side only not in canter like before,
only right hand can be use to swipe unlock, swiping on left side can't unlock
2. S pen detach menu options has been gone... now there is no options when you pull out s pen... its a total shame Samsung
3. OS UI is just like phone not like tablet... there are only 3 soft buttons on bottom now just like nexus phone and upper part is just like mobile notification bar and also very tiny its very hard to use it like a tablet...
4. Air view in gallery is very tiny... don't know what the f**k they hv done to it...
Same problem also with video air preview and massages n emails app ... very tiny..
5. Almost All apps are same **** like before no update at all
only very few apps like calculator dealing app etc. are slightly changed
But worth update in my opinion....... NOOOOOOOOOOOO
And if you just want kitkat which is another junk from Google
I think jelly bean was also very stable n yes its work on tablet UI...
but now I hv 10.1 screen n hv to tap here n there just to operate this....
Thanks
Sorry for my bad English
N someone pls tell me how to revert back to jellybean official Indian firmware
Thanks
One more new problem I found today: keyboard has lost its gesture control to change keyboard's layouts
you hv to set it up manually...
update : no more floting windows option in multi windows just 2 fixed windows..... helllllllll
I agree with you that Samsung's implementation of 4.4 and Android in general sucks. But that is where agreement stops. Original Google 4.4 and actually 4.3 as well as 4.2 are very usable and nice looking operational system. And pretty functional too. I feel sorry for all of this millions of Samsung's that stuck with what ever company put on their tablets and phones that are very nicely designed hardware but software Samsung is using not a much for hardware. If you are brave root your device and install one of the non- official close to real Google KitKat firmware and you will be shocked how much better it is. Just mine 2cc. Note 10.1 Original 2012 with OmniROM.
1. I would disagree with you, I think it's an improvement over the old lockscreen: https://hostr.co/file/bRNkmTritpRP/1401072520160.png
2. You can use GMD S Pen to get back the menu that shows up when you pull out the s pen. For me, I found it pointless because it wasn't very customizable nor convenient for me.
3. That's Android's fault, buttons are center now, even on stock AOSP rom.
4. I agree with you that the air view is not that great, but for me this isn't a deal breaker.
5. Not necessarily a bad thing, people have already ported many apps from the Note 10.1 (2014) and other newer devices onto our note.
Google isn't to blame for the issues you have, Samsung is. KitKat actually has many great improvements on our Note 10.1 (being able to move apps to SD Card, more apps are compatible, and overall better performance.
If you insist on going back, you need to flash the old rom via Mobile Odin, but you won't be able to flash the bootloader because of KNOX.
Works Great for me..... :good:
I'm just waiting to see he they make an update that posts out the mess or if one of the many custom roms comes up to the mark soon ie. With all the features working and the original interface.
>Use Gnabo stock rom v3
>Profit
In my own personal experience I've seen that the performance improvement is leaps and bounds over the 4.1.2 any day and that's all I really care about.
Hallo,
That my mine.
KitKat Update for the Flagship Device, Note 10.1 (2012), is a Shame, a Quick and dirty Update, only they can say we update to Kitkat.
No new Feature (Air Command), Old Software (Weather) convert to new ROM.
The Center Buttons and the Lockscreen come from Google.
In the Future i don't buy any Flagship Device from Samsung, i buy any Budget Device and after 12 Month i drop it into the Trash and buy a newer, but not from Samsung.
This is exactly what they want you to do. Buy and consume... unfotunately we have money to consume and pollute environment for nothing.
I have begun thinking to get Surface for my next tablet when my N8000 is end of its life. Allthought three things was necessary to me - a tablet, phone and a pen - to have in one package, i need to think it all over again. And probably need to have a phone and a tablet in the future (which i dont like, but Samsung cant offer reliable support for its devices).
Agreed with OP with some points
Go for omni if you don't need camera and screen recording features
Omni offers latest kitkat 4.4.3 and gets updated everyday (Delta updates), super smooth, customisable etc.
I installed Touchwiz because i need to use video and screen recording otherwise i would have never updated to touchwiz again, but one good news for touchwiz kitkat is that someday in future out tablet has touch to wake functionality through boeffla kernal..... :good:
I've been waiting and waiting for kitkat but as I have N8010 is gonna be a long time yet I guess......
I wanted to try gnarbo rom but I don't want the phone stuff as I have no need for them.
I'll just have to wait for the official kitkat for my tablet, but then am still unsure whether I'll update as I want the goodies of what my 2014 has so will probably wait for someone to release a good custom rom for my device.
I got my 2014 note 10.1 as a present but had always said it wasn't worth the extra as it wasn't that much better than my n8010. That was before but now I'm changing my mind, I think it is alot better.
Still might ditch them both just to get a galaxy tab S........
My biggest problem is the notification window (when u pull down)
its so freaking big n ugly
anyway does anyone knows when nordic countries will get it?
well, i do want to go back to jelly bean 4.1.2
because its very easy to use by 2 thumbs only
so plz tell me...
does i need to root my tab to use mobile odin?
or just install mobile odin and install firmware through it...???
any possible problems which can occur?
i dont care about boot loader i just need clean os
just like before...
thanks in advanced
I'm in the same situation... But I think I will update first to the stock 4.4.2 (whenever that happens) and only after I'll put some custom rom... The "problem" is that I use SPen a lot (that was the reason to buy this tablet), so support for the samsung framework is essencial in whatever rom I'll end up installing...
I have no plan to update Note 10.1 Classic to 4.4.x so I can keep using flash player.
If I want 4.4.x, I just buy Tab Pro 10.1 or use Note 8 (updated to 4.4.x).
I suppose that we should give it some time until it get's really usable. As far as I remember there was a mod or something to remove the ugly and uselesss bottom 3 button bar and restore more or less the 4.1.2 look? Might be mistaken, though....
Anyone actually tried the cracked Phone Screen Sharing program? Does it work on KitKat?
