Okay, so the title might be a little misleading. But I want to start a super-project with a bunch of developers here on XDA to bring 4.4 to Legacy Devices. some of you may laugh at my idea, but the truth is PLENTY of us are either stuck at an old version or hate the custom ROM manufactures put in place on our devices. I recently received an old T mobile sidekick 4G, witch is stuck at Froyo. I want to compile android 4.4 when it releases, to be compatible with my SK4G. I know it seems ridiculous to work on such on old device, but i'm a "Developer on a budget". I'm not asking someone to work on a ROM for me, but it would be cool to get some direction on how to do this. I also want to work on Kit Kat ROM's for the HTC Wildfire S, Huawei Ascend Q, and the Kyocera Hydro Elite.
Thanks to anyone viewing this! If you would like to join my cause and add your device to the list, just comment your device!
I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I think the hardware limits you. I don't believe those phones have enough underneath the hood to run ICS and up.....

If the rumours are true, kitkat is supposed to be far less hungry for hardware performance than JB or ICS. I use an old SE X10 mini pro running a similar processor to the wildfire S, and it was possible to run jb 4.1.2 on it, even though it was pretty laggy.
All in all, with a bit of luck(concerning the rumours), knowledge, compiling and time (not to forgetting a little naive thinking ), it might yet be possible to use kitkat on legacy devices. With that, I would like to add my device to the list and offer whatever help I can.

im no developer but i can tell you it that even if it does take less resources to run kitkat, its all about the drivers...
if kitkat uses drivers newer than what your phone has available then it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible to get it to work right
say for example kitkat requires updated drivers for wifi that are unavailable to your phone, you either find some workaround for it (much harder than it sounds) or you will not have wifi
or say kitkat uses newer graphics drivers your phone doesnt have, then you might not even be able to get the screen to work at all
if workarounds are needed it could take months and months to get it to work at all and with tons of bugs
just take the droid 1 for example, gingerbread wasnt too bad to port to it since there werent a ton of major changes but ics took nearly 6 months to get working and it was still buggy with all the workarounds and that was a very popular early developer device
Thanks for the in put, but I can figure something out....

I have a Kyocera Hydro Elite and in my all stupidity I've played way to much with system files. Now the device boots up to Kyocera screen and then lands to Verizon....after a while vibrates there and then restarts.
I cant seem to find a RUU for this device to fix it. I have dump of /system though. A kind soul gave me that. I don't know if that's gonna help.
Thanks in advance.
It's running on the moto defy and there is a group of guys working on a droid x build. Both devices are about 3 years old and have locked bootloaders. Most likely the droid x guys will need an updated recovery in order to get 4.4 to flash. They are so focused on fixing build errors that they might like some help with the recovery.

See the flaw is, I here tons of people say "Oh, Kitkat 4.4 will run becuase it uses less ram", Which is true, but this won't make it possible to run on a 3-6 year old device. Kitkat is more about nand than it is ram. To run kitkat, you device is going to need at least 300mb for system space.
And not to get you red or mad or anything, but I'm going to tell you that this project is far away from possible atm. I've prayed that one day google will become like ubuntu and make it android with almost universal drivers, but its not possible.
See, the flaw to this whole topic is that you left out a key piece of evidence. There are over 500 different android phones and such including android watches, glass, tvs etc. And it takes weeks to months to get a build for just 1 phone stable, and thats if you a great developer. And first you have to find a developer that owns that phone, let alone 500+ devs. And I'm sure most or at least half will want some type of pay for it, cause its not easy.
Sorry man, Im telling you the nicest way, but it just is impossible

Hi guys! First, this idea is awesome for Legacy device users (like me ). Second, i will ask, maybe someone can port any SlimRom to our device, we will be proud, if someone gonna do that. Galaxy Core is good phone, but the problem is, that we don`t have any dev, that can port rom for us. We - Core users are asking for help. Thanks!
Go for it
I recentlybroke my Galaxy S 4G and am back on the Sidekick 4G-- my girlfriend also has the same phone lol. If you could finish up where windxixi left off, Gingerbread would give this phone new life.

Here is it the Nexus S system dump leak, would be awesome to have a port to HD2 of gingerbread 2.3 as soon as possible.

The nexus s probably won't be able to be ported to the hd2. It has completely different hardware and processor than the hd2. We can port nexus one and desire ports because they have similar hardware.

incorrect my friend.
The Nexus S is AOSP and since source is released we will easily get a port, it's just a matter of re-writing drivers.
The Nexus S is just vanilla Gingerbread.
How did we get a Desire HD port, it's different from the HD2, Desire, or Nexus.
How about the MT4G ports? It runs an MSM and not a QSD. The only real difference is that the Nexus S runs on a hummingbird.
We're getting a freaking WP7 port and you're trying to tell me we won't get an AOSP 2.3 port?
Why do you guys argue with obvious newbs? Looking forward to a real port the sdk was garbage. Just sucks our phones are unable to display full 32 bit

The hardware software interface is managed by the kernel, which includes all of the drivers needed for our hardware. We already have a working kernel, the gingerbread build sits on top of the kernel. What hardware the galaxy S is not relevant. This will easily be ported to the HD2.
The only thing I want from gingerbread is that sick CRT-style wake and sleep animation. I'd even be happy with just that cooked onto a froyo build.

That's pretty ignorant to call me an obvious newb. You're right, I may have made an incorrect statement, but I think they still will probably wait for the nexus one to be updated with gingerbread, as it will be much simpler to port to our hd2s, and the n1 should be updated any day now.

Agree, everyone makes mistakes every now and then, that's no biggie.
I see that now one of the biggest moders like cyanogenmod and modaco are not developing things for this phone.
And the bootloader is still not hacked.
Im searching for a phone with big community, that have non stop roms and everything.. you know.. a good android phone.
I just don't know what to do, i need to buy a phone from USA now.
The only option is the Atrix ? And its sucks right now..

this phone is not for you. wait for the nexus S on at&t, the lg thrill, or the samsung galaxy S 2
Idk if this is an at&t specific thing but the thunderbolt looks really nice and if it is at&t the inspire isn't bad at all, I personally love my atrix, I came from a hd2(which was constant flashing) and a nexus one(which I flashed acouple of custom roms due to stability issues), but if the phone works right and does everything you want it to there's no real reason to want custom roms
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
modaco already started its support for optimus 2x, and paul is really making good results for cwm.. the problem is that g2x is not out yet in the usa and has no confirmed release date yet.
i suggest just wait for possible phones that would be hack friendly w/ no locked bootloaders since you want lots of custom roms, probably g2x, samsung galaxy s2, lg thrill, the next nexus(nexus 2 probably?) or "some" phones from htc(i heard htc is going to be strict w/ their bootloaders on their future phones also )?

I guarantee you the nexus s along with others will contend with this phone in the long run. The atrix has lost more than once in dogfights and comparisons. Everyone makes it seem like if u have a single core phone than your simply outdated its just a matter of people wanting to play catch up. There are only 3 dual cores on the market right now.and most of the phones out now g2 nexus s inspire and 4g vibrant are considered better once rooted and hacked.

if u feel like its ur only chance to get one now than shoot but there is barely any support for it kernel and rom wise. 2 roms are in developelment but they dont really enable much. I say go ahead and buy it. I originally came from the Evo and Sprint. I originally got the Atrix but then I swapped it for the Inspire. A couple weeks later I swappd the Inspire for an iPhone 4. About two days after, that I swapped the iPhone 4 back in for another Atrix. So I basically had a chance to try out 3 of the biggest phones on Att. The reason I came back to the Atrix is because first of all, its dual core. Even though the Inspire is a great phone, its single core. Its apps that's being developed that'll only work on dual core phones.
Another reason is speed and battery life. Both of which is really great on tge Atrix and blows away a lot of other phones.
Notice in my post I meantioned that I had the iphone for 2 days....that was all I needed to know I wasn't keeping that boring device.
I think the Atrix is already a great device despite not being able to flash rims at the current moment. Like I previously said the battery life is great and the speed is amazing. So if you don't mind running stock, then go for it.

Buy the inspire. I bought mine as a backup and haven't really touched it since installing CM7. Atrix runs fine with stock. I don't understand your need for roms when it performs fine out of the box.

Don't just rush and get tgw Atrix, although I don't think we know enough to properly help you.
You said you need to get it "now", we know that, but how long are you going to be locked into the phone?
If you are just getting it foe the specs, you should really look at how you use the phone and see if dual cores is really something you want, because in my opinion (and I see myself as a heavy user) it isn't needed.
Unless you are playing Dungeon Defenders or other high end games, top tier single cored phones are good enough, don't just buy innto the hype of the specs tthat I and a lot of others did.
I got mine the day it came our here, used it, loved iit, compared to my Nexus 1 and Captivate, then took it back to ATT.
The 2.3.3 Nexus is just as fast doing pretty much everything; the battery lasts all day as well.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
You cannot legitimately compare the performance of two phones running different operating systems. The results are meaningless. Wait until the Atrix is running 2.3 and then it will be useful. I disagree that the single core phones will be equivalent under those conditions.

Went from a nexus one to a samsung vibrant to atrix. Atrix by far has been the best experience so far. Zero lag.
The n1 had a ****ed up touch screen, even after replacement
Vibrant had awful awful gps and considerable lag compared to n1
Atrix has solved all these problems, and I could give a **** about specs. This phone just works. Just try it before you buy it. I used to load custom roms on ntt previous two phones, but that was because they needed augmentation, this phone does not. Really the build quality is right up there with the n1 or the incredible. My phone has been on for 1 day and five hours, still got ten percent battery left. Been connected to wifi the entire time. I bought the phone yesterday so you know I've been using it.
Amazing, love the high resolution, so much more breathing room. My 2 cents.

there are a few developers and belive me i know a dead device i developed for the zte warp untill the androidforums.com mods told me there was no use move on.... the diference is there is no "community development" when multiple people work together to build the best rom possible and there id no themeing either which is a substancial part of any development community. i respect you evol4g otherwise i wouldnt have asked you to my team you are doing a great job keep it going the point of this post was to motivate some of the other developers that have been dormant since jellybean came out you all know that they are out there.
Mostly because people are waiting for 4.2. A lot of the current ROMs are similar and very stable so no need to really make new ROMs unless its say Touchwiz, Sense, or any other custom Android firmware. Wait until 4.2 and devs will probably start making more ROMs.
Incorrect thread is incorrect.

I will preface my comment by saying i really do appreciate all of the work still being done here. But, let's not kid ourselves. After a year and a half I don't think there's much potential a dev hasn't thought of for this device. You don't see a lot of rom development much after the 2 year mark. Mainly because the devs upgrade to a new phone. I'm just grateful for the work the devs are currently doing!

I have faith in the developer community, eventually it will get unlocked and there will be a large amount of support for the device. But if not...at least it is a good looking paper weight that can be sold to people who have no idea about android dev community and they are just looking for the newest/greatest thing launched. I could then just buy w/e device I wanted. I'm content knowing that right now, it is a good device without any problems, while messaging or doing anything else. :highfive:

I havent noticed any lag...and any lag people notice is probably due to the fact that 90% of apps have not been optimized to run on 4.2.2 the latest version of android
Also...I will guarantee you that the bootloader will be unlocked...idk why everyone is so paranoid about it...if the Motorola Atrix bootloader can be unlocked than so fan the sgs4 especiaply since its going to have much more dev support as well as sgs4 prob wint have an encrypted bootloader...just be freaking patient people...dont expect things to happen over night the phone was just officially released today...wait a couple weeks while more devs get the device

The Atrix bootloader was unlocked because Moto gave us the ability to unlock it - it wasn't hacked or anything, despite the bounty raised and complaints made.... if Samsung doesn't want this unlocked, it won't be, IMO of course, so I wouldn't compare the manufacturer giving away the unlock code to devs cracking this one, considering how many more eyes are on the S4 than there were on the Atrix!
THAT being said, I agree with you on the support and development that will go into this phone - it is so much better than the SIII in every way possible, I can't wait to see what we're going to get into on it! All I know is that I'm ready for assisting with PNG's on the themes whenever someone wants to start coding....

I keep seeing this posted and have no idea what the hell you guys think needs to be "optimized" in apps for 4.2.2. There are a ton of devices running roms on 4.2.2 without lag in the apps.
I can only assume you mean touchwiz itself which, let's be honest, is at this point likely a bloated monster full of awful legacy code.

Agreed... I am patiently waiting for the day when I can get rid of that crap, that's when this thing will really shine

Should I be getting paranoid that the developer support of this device is very slow out of the gate? The hardware is great and beats everything else I tried, but now with S-Off out there for the One on VZW, I am getting worried that I chose poorly.

Not sure what you are looking for or what you are missing, but there has been plenty of Dev support for the VZW VS980

I am talking from my experience with the G Pro. There are Roms but really all those CM based Roms or other ones are all weak compared to the stock based Roms. U loose so many features with those costume Roms. From dual shot camera and video to quick note to smart screen and smart video to some other great features u only have on stock ROM. U basically gonna cripple ur G2 if u use a costume ROM.

OMG another one of these threads that has been answered over and over. If you don't like the current developer support on the G2, then return it. I find it funny that the people that always ask starts these topics are smart enough to find XDA forums to look for development but yet don't look around in the General and Development threads to gauge for themselves on whether it has enough developer support for that phone to them.
How soon do people except a custom ROM besides just a debloated stock ROM in the first few weeks? Since its clear that you are not a developer and don't understand that you can't just whip out pre-alpha custom ROMs that will crash people's phones and it takes time to do this stuff. Remember that the developers are not paid to do this stuff and do this as a hobby. If you can't deal with patience than get the GS4 or the HTC One.

This thread happens with every new phone lol! O.P even the phones you want to exchange with this one at some point had threads just like this one right before ROMS became available
2 roms is far from other if support. A few tweaks. Nothing to write home about. No OEM accessories except for one overpriced case.
Sorry, but coming from a long line of custom roms on devices I have a higher expectation for my roms. And those CM or AOKP types blow stock out of the water and add tons of other features that outperform the stock.

Sounds like the OP is the typical "user" anymore. For some reason even tjo they have no idea the amount of work that goes into building a rom or a kernel or mod, they just somehow feel entitled to get it when they want it. Guess what dude, had HTC ONE on release day , and development was slower than the G2 is. Want a rom when you want it.....build it yourself . this **** aint easy, if it was youd be building a rom instead of *****ing about it.

Don't know what to say since you feel entitled to have 20 custom ROMs a week after release. If you are so compelled to want custom ROMs, why don't you try developing one and contributing instead of complaining. You seem way too paranoid about developer support for a phone for someone that contributes nothing to the development scene. Most of us are just grateful that we have volunteer developers that want to develop ROMs for the LG G2. I don't demand but rather appreciate all the hard work that they do when they feel ready to release it. I understand that making a ROM is not a walk in the park or else everyone would be doing it.
My advice to you....get a GS4 or HTC One. It has 20 billion custom ROMs that you can flash to your heart's desire right now.

Or just get an iPhone, it seems to have as much development future as the G2 according to the OP

It hasn't even been a full month yet, and we have a decent amount of mods and a couple ROMs already. That's nothing to scoff at by any sort of reasonable standard. Slow your roll, bro.

im a flashaholic, and once i got root on this bad boy i got all my apps i needed
gameplay is smooth
im really liking lg's UI and stock rom/kernel
Phone rarely even gets warm ,not hot.
Camera is really great
Quick Remote is great as well
Im satisfied with stock rom for once. lol
battery is INSANE checkout post #76 screenshots , no way thatll happen on the ONE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470564&page=8
I've owned plenty of popular flagship devices and even though they have plenty of ROM selection, I've found them to be very similar to each other so I only chose between two or three different ones as my daily driver... So ROM selection is usually over rated based on all the copycat ROM available.
I personally enjoyed my time more with the smaller and unpopular devices that had fewer ROM's at first but then development picked up. Which I think will be the case with this phone.

I'm very happy with this phone and the activity in the development community so far. The only two major things I would like to see happen in the future is a port of 4.4 and of 5.0 when they eventually are released into the wild. I don't have much faith in LG but with the new nexus phone so similar I'd imagine this will be done.
