Should i buy this phone now or not? - Atrix 4G General

I see that now one of the biggest moders like cyanogenmod and modaco are not developing things for this phone.
And the bootloader is still not hacked.
Im searching for a phone with big community, that have non stop roms and everything.. you know.. a good android phone.
I just don't know what to do, i need to buy a phone from USA now.
The only option is the Atrix ? And its sucks right now..
What to do ?

It doesn't suck.... you're just being super dranmatic

This is help up?

If non stop roms is what makes a phone good to you, look elsewhere. This phone does not need an unlocked bootloader to kick most other phones asses.

this phone is not for you. wait for the nexus S on at&t, the lg thrill, or the samsung galaxy S 2

Idk if this is an at&t specific thing but the thunderbolt looks really nice and if it is at&t the inspire isn't bad at all, I personally love my atrix, I came from a hd2(which was constant flashing) and a nexus one(which I flashed acouple of custom roms due to stability issues), but if the phone works right and does everything you want it to there's no real reason to want custom roms
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

modaco already started its support for optimus 2x, and paul is really making good results for cwm.. the problem is that g2x is not out yet in the usa and has no confirmed release date yet.
i suggest just wait for possible phones that would be hack friendly w/ no locked bootloaders since you want lots of custom roms, probably g2x, samsung galaxy s2, lg thrill, the next nexus(nexus 2 probably?) or "some" phones from htc(i heard htc is going to be strict w/ their bootloaders on their future phones also )?

Nexus s, g2, or inspire.
The atrix would be a better phone if it had more roms. I dont care too much for stock.

Nexus S? G2 ?
One core devices ....
So to buy the Atrix?
In the future there will be a gingerbread update right? and 1080p too?
Also it will be a strong and good devices without many roms and kernels...
And maybe it will be fully hacked ha.?
What you say.. buy it or not?

I say buy it and I agree with the people above in support of buying it as well.
You can by mine off of me if you'd like

I guarantee you the nexus s along with others will contend with this phone in the long run. The atrix has lost more than once in dogfights and comparisons. Everyone makes it seem like if u have a single core phone than your simply outdated its just a matter of people wanting to play catch up. There are only 3 dual cores on the market right now.and most of the phones out now g2 nexus s inspire and 4g vibrant are considered better once rooted and hacked.

if u feel like its ur only chance to get one now than shoot but there is barely any support for it kernel and rom wise. 2 roms are in developelment but they dont really enable much. Its a dual core whip out a rom or kernel that will blow other phones socks off. Have me running at 4.4ghz or something. My friends hacked mytouch 4g runs faster than the atrix and its single core lol

I say go ahead and buy it. I originally came from the Evo and Sprint. I originally got the Atrix but then I swapped it for the Inspire. A couple weeks later I swappd the Inspire for an iPhone 4. About two days after, that I swapped the iPhone 4 back in for another Atrix. So I basically had a chance to try out 3 of the biggest phones on Att. The reason I came back to the Atrix is because first of all, its dual core. Even though the Inspire is a great phone, its single core. Its apps that's being developed that'll only work on dual core phones.
Another reason is speed and battery life. Both of which is really great on tge Atrix and blows away a lot of other phones.
Notice in my post I meantioned that I had the iphone for 2 days....that was all I needed to know I wasn't keeping that boring device.
I think the Atrix is already a great device despite not being able to flash rims at the current moment. Like I previously said the battery life is great and the speed is amazing. So if you don't mind running stock, then go for it.

Buy the inspire. I bought mine as a backup and haven't really touched it since installing CM7. Atrix runs fine with stock. I don't understand your need for roms when it performs fine out of the box.

Don't just rush and get tgw Atrix, although I don't think we know enough to properly help you.
You said you need to get it "now", we know that, but how long are you going to be locked into the phone?
If you are just getting it foe the specs, you should really look at how you use the phone and see if dual cores is really something you want, because in my opinion (and I see myself as a heavy user) it isn't needed.
Unless you are playing Dungeon Defenders or other high end games, top tier single cored phones are good enough, don't just buy innto the hype of the specs tthat I and a lot of others did.
I got mine the day it came our here, used it, loved iit, compared to my Nexus 1 and Captivate, then took it back to ATT.
The 2.3.3 Nexus is just as fast doing pretty much everything; the battery lasts all day as well.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App

You cannot legitimately compare the performance of two phones running different operating systems. The results are meaningless. Wait until the Atrix is running 2.3 and then it will be useful. I disagree that the single core phones will be equivalent under those conditions.

Motorollla could have waited until they got 2.3 on the phone but they chose to release it now and that's what we are comparing it to
Just because it is being compared aand falling up short because of the os doesn't mean you can just disregard the test all together.

Went from a nexus one to a samsung vibrant to atrix. Atrix by far has been the best experience so far. Zero lag.
The n1 had a ****ed up touch screen, even after replacement
Vibrant had awful awful gps and considerable lag compared to n1
Atrix has solved all these problems, and I could give a **** about specs. This phone just works. Just try it before you buy it. I used to load custom roms on ntt previous two phones, but that was because they needed augmentation, this phone does not. Really the build quality is right up there with the n1 or the incredible. My phone has been on for 1 day and five hours, still got ten percent battery left. Been connected to wifi the entire time. I bought the phone yesterday so you know I've been using it.
Amazing, love the high resolution, so much more breathing room. My 2 cents.

Sgs2 or what?

I was just wondering what phone you guys are waiting for, I'm personally waiting for the sgs2, hopefully it comes out soon enough. Seems mostly everyone has gone to the g2x already.
if they did go for the g2x already i feel sorry for them in my opinion. ive seen the reviews and no way is it even close to sg2 not even close to htc sensation. im gonna get either one of those, preferable sg2!

Precisely.
The reason why a lot of people have gone towards the g2x is the big support from the Dev community. Unlocked bootloader + source has already been released.
Not to mention sg2 has no release date for the u.s, others couldn't wait.

These are reasons why people in this community would buy or take a long look at it, seems like a good phone and most reviews are quite good. Samsung and there slow updates, and lack of source make a tough phone for developers and now that HTC and Moto are locking their bootloaders, its gets harder to dev's to make the fun they make.

Hands Down SGS2, I love being able to tinker, but even if I cant I love samsung hardware. I gotta say for support though, LG or HTC
I never understood the craze over the g2. Is there something with current roms that you don't like?
Idk about craze over the G2, but it is a fantastic phone, especially for emulators in my opinion, but thats because you can get some nice clocks outta the CPU. I got one (well, not mine, I tinker with my friends) running @ 1.8ghz, and thats pretty sexy playing OOT on there perfectly (almost) In regards to roms, you mean for vibrant? I have no problem with anyones work =) just prefer my own I'm working on =P
I understand that the G2, and all second gen snapdragons for that matter, can clock high, but is there any application other than emulators that use that power. After all, developers have to take care of both the low and high end phones. Plus, you are killing the lifespan of the CPU and lowering your battery life.
The vibrant runs fine on 2.2.1 and is helped by Samsung's GPU acceleration implementation in both the launcher and browser. And once the i9000 gingerbread roms start rolling out, we can only expect greater speed and stability.
Mostly people suffer from nuevo-addiction and waiting is just too much. Also, alot of people who have phones I have noticed once the phone becomes bugfree with lots of support they bail for a new phone to conquer the new phone system.
I am waiting for the S2
if you've got the money why nit? if I'm a millionaire I would buy all the latest android phone.

I'm looking forward to the sensation. The galaxy s2 wont be significantly better in terms of hardware, and I've got a real bad taste in my mouth from the lack of support my vibrant has received from Samsung. Locked bootloader or not, the sensation is still a pretty good looking phone that I'm sure will perform well.
Worst case scenario, I buy the sensation, hate it and return within 14 days, wait for something else to be released. My vibrant and hd2 should keep me happy until I find something great.

To me the problem is buying a carrier altered edition of the phone. The international GS seems to get upgrades just fine. They don't have to wait on Samsung AND then the retarded carriers with all their alterations and other BS. That's what owning my Vibrant has taught me. 100% international & unlocked only from here on in. I'll be buying the International SGS2 as soon as I can, no US version for me ever again.
all i want is a new google nexus phone with a notification led duel cameras with flash and a duel core processor then ill be happy

Nexus s to atrix

Hi guys I'm a girl that doesn't know to much about new phones. I'm receiving my nexus s on Tuesday. I'm wondering is it a good trade to atrix? My cousin he wants to trade it. My nexus will be brand new. So should i do it or no?

You'll be able to do little nerdy stuff on the atrix, so if rooting and having some fancy home screens considered enough then go for the atrix.
For me having 1 gb of memory + qHD res screen is a deal maker/breaker
Also, a doubt that the atrix's bootloader is gonna be locked forever anyway...

Go for the Atrix you'll love it I'm sure. You said you'd like to root and have a little fun with it, you can hook up the Atrix to a nice sized flat screen tv via hdmi and turn it into a computer. I like to tweak, and I have been more than happy with what I have been able to do on my 1st droid phone with the help of the XDA community so far.
I connected my phone to my flat screen in the living room last night to show the the Webtop and the family couldn't believe what they saw.
Get an Atrix, and in 5 years when nobody carries laptops anymore, and it's all done with cell phones, you can say you had the 1st one!

Both the phones have their own stand point.
Atrix on one hand does the deal breaking job with its Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but, it has MotoBlur and no Gingerbread in sight yet.
Nexus S on the other hand is Google's own, it has got all the Goodies except the Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but has Gingerbread on it already, has a SuperAMOLED Contour Display etc...
Holding two phones in your hands and comparing them side by side will do the trick. Go with what you like.
So far I love my Atrix. Haven't used NS yet, no comments about the performance, but if anyone wants to try different roms, NS is the one. There are a lots of Atrix users not liking the phone because of MotoBlur, which seems ok to me.
Personal Opinion : I like the way the bootloader is locked, so that you will have consistency on your phone, you don't have to back up your phone, messages, notes taken etc every now and then just because you are trying thousands of different ROMs available every weekend.
The Nexus S is clearly faster despite having inferior hardware, scrolling through homescreens and the app drawer is much faster on the nexus S. However, the atrix has the edge when you're actually opening those apps, albeit a small edge. The nexus S will receive more updates than the atrix and it's also already on a new version of the android OS.
However, i love my atrix. The fingerprint scanner (when it works) is pretty darn sweet and a great feature to have. I don't think dual core is even utilized yet, but i hope when it is the atrix will be even better than it already is. Oh, and the nexus S doesn't support 4G (?source). While the atrix doesn't have 4G yet, it should be coming out very soon.

I switched to a nexus s, I get the same quadrant scores if not higher than the atrix. The phone feels great works amazing and the roms only make it better. There is no lag and the camera kicks the crap out of the atrix. Battery life is phemominal and much better than I had on the atrix, plus it's much more vibrant with the samoled vs pentile.
I would get a nexus because at least for the moment it works better than the atrix.

I agree with you but I guess you are happy right now with NS because of the possibility to be able to flash any ROM anytime you want because of the Devs support. I wouldn't compare them both right now, as Atrix is not upgraded to Gingerbread yet. If the NS is still kicking Atrix's butt even after the upgrade, I am all in for this beast by Google.
I still love the stock Android experience, but Atrix's performance is not that bad. It does the job, it performs well. To me, except the VOIP voice support issue, everything else is much better than my N1 and iPhone 4. Battery life is way better than both, higher res screen is great, plus a Dual Core processor is a deal breaker... again, all of this is a personal preference.

I love my vibrant

I love my Vibrant. I really do. It's been running great since the day 1.
In 20 days, I am moving overseas. I know for a fact that the cell phones are much more expensive in the country that I will be traveling. If I ever decide to change my Vibrant, I need to do it now! But I don't know what to get
Essentially, there would be at least half a dozen new phones to choose from, which all would have a ton of new stuff; but I don't believe this is the case. HTC Sensation? Droid X? What is out there that would blow my brains out?
Anyways, if you think Vibrant is weak compared to newer phones and recommend I should change it before my travel, please say so. Thanks!

There have been a lot of killer phones recently released, but I'm lovin' my Sensation!
depends... where are you moving to? - don't have to answer if its that personal to you.
then we can tell you that phones are released there, or what phones are set to be released.
Anyways without knowing your location a random shot - i'd say Galaxy S 2
I personally don't think any of the new devices (Galaxy S2 included) really justify the cost of buying a new device. Unless Android finally gains some multi-core support now, dual cores will underperform compared to a higher clocked single core chip or due to the higher resolutions on newer devices such as the Sensation. As of now, your best bet is to just upgrade to CM7 or a nice JVR rom (has a buttery smooth browser similar to the one in SGS2) and wait the for next Nexus. Even on its single core Hummingbird, the Nexus S still probably performs the same of slightly better simply due to its stock vanilla rom.

No nothing is worth the money to upgrade right now. The vibrant (if its modded and customized) should be good enough wherever you're going. See if you can get your hands on a regular internation galaxy s. Its supported infinitely more (they've been on gb since like september lol) and still gets updates...
The gs 2 isn't worth the upgrade. Well to me atleast. The screen is the same that's the only deal breaker
I have the epic 4g and this phone is definitely good enough. My friend just got the sensation and I'm envious, ofcourse, but its not as much of a jump from, say, the mytouch 3g to the mytouch 4g slide.
If you really want to upgrade, then get another gsm phone. The droid x is a downgrade and its also CDMA which is mainly only supported in the US and japan.
Good luck, my fellow galaxy s brother

Learn from my mistakes....stick with Nexus phones!

Ok, so I bought a Nexus S around January of this year. Full price from Best Buy. Thought it was fantastic. It was my first "Nexus" phone. But a few months later, I got bored and heard about the Dual Core HTC Sensation. So I sold my Nexus S and bought the Sensation.
I loved this phone at first, but the novelty wore off. But the entire time I had it, the Nexus S was in the back of my mind. Sure the Sense 3.0 looks good, but for a dual core phone it didn't feel better. The Nexus S is faster. I know that Sense uses a lot of memory, and the Sensation was my first Sense phone, but it ruined Sense for me. I dislike Sense because of the Sensation and will probably never pick up another phone running Sense.
So, this weekend I sold the Sensation to a user on this site and bought another Nexus S. I feel that at this point, if it isn't a Nexus phone, then I don't want it. Dual core or not!
LOL thanks, i guess that summarizes what i've been hesitant about
I was also thinking about picking up the Sensation, or the G2x, but no matter how i looked at it, it didn't have as much development going on as the Nexus S
also the lack of SAMOLED is a big no no for me.
the only phone i've set my eyes on at the moment is the Samsung Hercules due out on the 09/26th
Yes, I missed the hell out of the Super AMOLED screen. It was one of those "don't know what you've got till its gone" type of things.
I would stay away from the Sensation and stay waaay the hell away from the G2X phones
The Super AMOLED spoiled me so I hope that Samsung gets the next Nexus phone too.

... seems like the next Nexus is going to be a Motorola
i wouldn't mind if they build them with SAMOLED from Samsung

Too late into the development cycle for Moto to get the next Nexus..but maybe the one after that. Plus, Andy Rubin just said even Moto would have to bid for the Nexus just like everyone else.

I returned my EVO-3D for my Nexus-S. The Nexus is the faster and smoother phone in my opinion.
Plus this screen after setting up Voodoo is amazing.
The next Nexus will be made by Samsung most likely or LG. I see Motorola making the Nexus-Four

I like the open, devvy nature of this phone.
I just wish my battery didn't suck.

To be quite honest, this is one of the less active boards, development wise. Not complaining, just pointing it out.

I don't mean xda's NS4G section, I mean the whole idea of the Nexus phones in general.

I think partly because it "just works".
The EVO boards everybody was trying to get AOSP/Cyanogenmod working and bugfree (bluetooth stack issues) and add Wimax support.
G2x also trying to get AOSP working, in a stable fashion. And they're trying to port the LG camera to AOSP. Also bluetooth issues there.
Here everything already just works.

This has been covered ad nauseum, but basically the other phone development forums are swamped with activity, most of which revolves around trying to get their phones to be like the Nexus is out of the box.
Maybe someone can start posting ROMs with features like "SENSE-less, no Touch Wiz, MotoBlur removed, ZERO BLOAT!!!!!?!" and then we can be like the other forums.
I second that, OP. Had the NS4G but then bought an SGSII and jumped on AT&T. SGSII was an AWESOME phone hardware-wise, and really liked that I was only paying $10/mo data for unlimited hspa+. But software wasn't as good as stock GB, and I missed the form factor of the NS. So I sold the SGSII and now looking for an AT&T NS, probably a white one since they went down in prices recently...then consider the Nexus 3 when it comes out
I have to agree with most on this board. if you want the newest updates always and if you want all the apps to work with your phone right off the back, stick with nexus. skype and netflix worked with the nexus right off the back, it took a couple of months before most of the other phones caught up. nexus prime is definitely my next phone, and hopefully it drops soon

Looking for advice for my next phone

It seems that Cyanogenmod will not be bringing their next generation (ICS) to the Vibrant. While I really like the Vibrant, perhaps it is time to think about moving on.
Are there any recommendations for where I should be looking. Here would be my considerations:
- I like the hardware features (screen size and resolution and 16GB memory)
- I want the phone to have full Cyanogenmod support
- Cyanogenmod support should include a good gps and battery life (both of which are shortcomings for the Vibrant)
- I need to stick with TMobile
- And, I don't want the phone to cost an arm and a leg
Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Nexus. Nothing else needs to be said. But if it does not come to to tmobile, I would lean towards HTC, they seem to be able to at least update phones.

I agree. Nexus should be #1 on your list if you want support and like the Vibrant. The HTC Amaze just came out on T-Mobile and has impressive hardware specs and is on the list from HTC to get the ICS update. It also has a 8MP camera with instant picture taking like the Nexus. I would imagine that Cyanogenmod will put out a mod for it. Though any new phones will need some time to see if CM will support it.
The Galaxy Nexus is a pentaband phone, so even if T-Mobile doesn't get it, it'll still run on their network. I normally tell people to get the phone that they like the best. Not everyone is an uber android geek. I told a buddy of mine to get the Droid Charge, he loves the thing. If he waited for the Galaxy Nexus, he'd be disappointed. It's personal preference.
It sounds like you like to tinker. People that like to tinker need a Nexus device because they'll always be the ones with the most support and the smoothest Android experience. I love my Vibrant, it was my first Android device. I'll probably always hold onto it as a backup phone with Stock Froyo + WiFi Calling, but in the future I'll most likely stick to Nexus devices.
Decide what you care about the most and less about hardware/appearance. If you want a custom experience more than what a manufacturer's android experience is, then go for a Nexus with optimized hardware. There are a lot of really nice, very cool phones out there but in terms of longevity of future up to date use, Nexus wins 10 times out of 10.
Also, I wouldn't buy a device based on the promise of updates. Carriers may intend to update a device, but several things can hinder that intention. In all reality, if an upgrade to ICS doesn't come until next August, well, what's the point? Remember, for a long time it looked like Samsung assumed that T-Mobile would want the Vibrant updated, and it didn't happen. There have several devices through the years that were suppose to be updated and never were. Always buy a phone for what it is, not what a carrier says it should be.
Regarding Galaxy Nexus being penta band, doesn't it mean only GSM is supported in 5 bands and not 3G? Why would Samsung build AWS band in a world phone for couple of carriers.
tmobil sgs2
What do you think of the T-Mobile sgs2? Will it get ice or will it end up being forgotten like the vibrant? Seems to me the T-Mobile sgs2 is more powerful than the nexus hardware wise
Sent from my T959 using xda premium
Higher specs are irrelevant. I'm sure it needs them to push TouchWiz. There is one device ICS is optimized for, and that's the Galaxy Nexus.
1) It's not Samsung that will abandon the SGS, it's T-Mobile
2) If you chase spec sheets you'll be replacing devices every 3-6 months.
Also, manufacturers are going to want to want their frameworks on top of ICS. There's no reference point for how ICS will look or run with TouchWiz, Sense or Motoblur on top of it. You have to go with what you know, not what you think you can assume.

Your advice is based on a "think" without any leak information of a virtual phone
nexus or tmobil sgs2! stay away from amaze
iPhone 5 will be my next device. too tempted by androids openness to play around with all the roms out there. iPhone will take that choice away and simplify things. also would play nicer with my Mac. my MacBook hates the vibrant it seems.
