[Q] S3 or S4? help me decide - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys and gals I'm currently want to upgrade my S2 (finally) to either a S3 or S4, reason why I'm still considering the S3 is that I haven't really heard anything bad about them. But for the S4 however..... things like, camera failing, sim card failure etc... But I'm an android developer so the main reason why im getting it in the first place is to have a big screen and a higher end processor since I've already got a S2 for a sort of low end kind of thing.
So if you dont mind giving me your thoughts on both products
and I do intend on getting extended warranty just because of the issues lol

I've never heard of camera or sim card failure
I went from the s2 to the s4 and don't regret it. Just make sure you know which version to get as there is quite a few

Sim card thing is a bit rare I guess if you cut out a piece of paper and slide in with it, it will fix it lol if not then its the connectors inside. Camera problem is common it black screens when you open it and their is another thing but cant recall. What do you mean versions? Build versions? or model version? if its model is their model's I should avoid?

there are mainly 3 models of s4.. 9505 ( quad core) 9500 ( exinos octacore) and the GE (google experiance) but i would consider more an s3... i had it and it's almoust the same... except for ram... you will not have any problem with knox eccc....
if you want an s4 buy the quad core lte version.... the 9505
of course is only my opinion

Actually the galaxy s3 will receive knox in future updates , if I were you I would stick with the s2 it was the best phone ever made by Samsung .
If you really want to upgrade, I think it’s better to wait a little bit longer , as the galaxy s5 should be released in January according to Samsung , also consider getting a nexus 5 , it’s priced around 350 and it should come with a faster processor .
Good luck

I went from the S3 to the S4 and found it to be noticeably smoother, has a much better battery, and the extra ram is also a big plus.

I am keeping the S2, that phone is so well built, when i was doing truck tyres I'd smack it around etc (not on purpose) and not a crack or signs of damage. I'm not too fussed about the S5 I'd never get anything on release as their will be likely problems with it... just look at GTA 5 lol...

Yeah I was doing a bit of research on them today, played around with my mates S3 their both wonderful devices but S3 is pretty good apart from how the screen is weak as an iphones screen lol.
Anyway I've decided to go with the S4, and have ordered one

[Q] Replacing my Nexus S. Need help to deicide!

Guys i need a little help. I am replacing my lovely nexus s.
My candidates are
Nexus 4
Galaxy S4
HTC ONE
Galaxy S3
Today i tried an S3 and a HTC ONE and an S4 (i9505) and a n4.
I love the S4 the design i think is much better than the s3, but the ONE has the best design, but i never buy a phone just 4 the design. And it is impossible to replace anything on the HTC One. The camera is not so good either, but the microphone and the stabilization is realy an useful extra. And HTC is never too good on updating its software. N4 is is a good all rounder, but the camera is crap The screen was insanely nice in the s4. My problem is that the s4 browser lagged like hell, i loaded up the verge desktop as my usual test page and during loading it was all choppy and unresponsive even the s3 was much faster! Not to menion my nexus 7 almost my dated nexus s was more responsive.... Maybe the demo phone does not had the final software? Can somone with a stock i9505 can try theverge? Please tell me how the browser behaves on a final s4? thx
I'd suggest you go with the s4. The lag was due to firmware not being ready. Chances are the model you will buy will probably not lag. And even if it does it will be fixed with an update. The s4 has the best hardware around right now, no doubt about that. The htc one is also a great phone and you won't regret buying either of them. I wouldn't buy the nexus 4 or s3 though.

S3 would be only because of price but i dont realy like compromise What you have against the nexus? Do you have the s4?
You may want to ask this in a general section and not in any sub forum as you will get biased replies to whichever forum you ask in. If you have decided to ask here it sounds like you are leaning towards the S4. The One at the moment sounds like the smoothest but if you want/need an external battery and SD slot you should probably go for the S4. The Ones camera isnt bad, its not as good as the S4 in daylight but better in low light. I'd go into a store again then compare the One & S4 to see which one you really like.

Thats a good point, if you like stock android you do not want a S4 unless you want to wait and see about this whole bootloader mess and get cyanogen.

I imagine what is in the store is final retail. I have never seen any device in store running pre-release hardware or firmware. What you see is what you get.
You'll get different views.
If software is important I'd recommend the nexus 4 as you'll get key lime pie before any Samsung or HTC device. It's not bloated with features, it's simple stock Android fast and functional.

Then i will go to another store and try it as if the s4 would behave that much slower as the s3 i would expect lots of people complaining
Only options in my eyes would be the S4 or the One. I have had both, the One first but I had to switch to the S4 as every single unit I found had stuck pixels among other faults. Aside from that it is a great phone, but if you do consider one then make sure you get a good one before you leave the shop!
Alternatively, absolutely no regrets going to the S4 instead.

The camera on the one is a fair bit better in the 1.29 update, check out some comparison reviews. Also, in terms of software updates, I read a piece somewhere that showed pretty categorically that HTC have the best history of updates.

Well lack of expandable storage along with the maximum option being a 16 gb version is the dealbreaker. I have a 16 gb s3 + 32 gb micro sd and I tend to fill that up with music and movies so I wouldn't be able to survive on just 16 gb. Theres also the battery life which doesn't seem to be that great along with it being non removable though I could probably live with it if it was only just that. I don't have the s4 right now. Still trying to decide between the s4 and one...

I have seen that too and HTC is realy better in updating non flagship devices for example the galaxy w does not even get updated from 2.3, but s2 the former flagship got 4.1.2 and wil get 4.2.2 and the HTC sensation remained on 4.0.4. But if someone replaces phone every year that does not realy matter

Considering upgrading from s3 to s4

I want to buy the s4 (gt-i9500 model) and I come from s3.
I just wanted to ask whoever got the phone already and had the galaxy s3 if there was any downgrade in user experience from the s3?
downgrade in user experience? seriously? i mean its not life-altering fast, but it is way faster than my S3 is and the screen is a lot better. got one for my wife and she loves it
I have just bought one today and i'm upgrading from a Galaxy S2 (i9100) and i can say the upgrade is pretty big experience wise as well as sound and display wise.
Coming from an S3 to an S4 the impact is not so big but i don't know if it's such a big improvement to be worth the upgrade unless you can sell your phone and get enough money to cover at least half of the cost of the S4.
worth the trade. No joke. Ive gone from the s1 to s2 to s3 and now the s4. massive improvement every time.

Upgrading from s3 should be a straight forward decision, no thinking what so ever, it is way better than s3 and beats it in every dept, upgrading from note 2 is still a question mark though, so I am taking my time.

I actually made the upgrade from a note 2 which is basicly a bigger s3.
What i miss is the bigger screen. Also the device is very Light! It takes time to get used to it.
In terms of speed the note 2 does feel smoother. But then again, it's gotten the **** tweaked out of it and it's overclocked. Also, a custom rom makes a huge difference. Multitasking lags a bit for me on the s4.
Now, what actually makes it worth while for me is the nice screen the s4 has!
It's so damn nice and sharp. The note 2 should have been 1080p.
However , the s4 will get custom firmwares and kernels, it's just a matter of time.
Can't want till the s4 gets custom kernels.
Btw, just to answer your question. My mom has a s3 and i played alot with it before i got the note2.
From a s3 to s4 is really worth the upgrade! If you have a note2 however, try it out for a few weeks before making a choice. The s4 has not custom firmwares yet, it is rooted tho. Cwm ain't fully avaiable as well. Lets see in about a month
I would love to upgrade from S3 to S4, but the main thing holding me back is the probable Development lag. CM team seams to be p****d of from
Sammy. We still waiting for missing codes on the S3, the main reason why the AOSP roms are not fully functional
Any advices are welcome, otherwise HTC one

i think the only problem with dev on the S4 is the bootloader, but from what i can tell on Cyanogen's G+ page, he already has CM10.1 on his Tmo S4
and im running AOKP on my S3, what doesn't work?
Go for it. And you will love it.

CM development has already begun for the qualcomm version. In fact, the qualcomm version is expected to see faster dev work coz qualcomm provides the proper drivers and binaries required. Steve Kondik has already built an alpha build of cm for the s4 with all core functions and even baseband radio working.
Thank you all, I think i'll wait a while until the price drops below 3500 NIS (~1000USD) and buy it.
Thanks for your help
The only thing stopping me from upgrading the sgs3 to sgs4 is the narrow field of view for pictures - other than that user experience etc is very similar... but is a showstopper for me.
Most of the "drawbacks" are software based, and you'll get a much more powerful device in your hands when development kicks off Go for it if you're coming from S3!
The big difference is if you currently have the 32gb version, since it has 17gb more storage for apps than the S4. If you are not a gamer and have the 16gb S3, you should be good to go
Since games play great on the S3 and 1080p seems not as important on a small display, I will wait for the 32gb version. If no 32gb version is released, I will keep my S3 A big BLEH though to Verizon if they don't carry the 32gb version. I preordered with Best Buy, but will cancel if just 16gb offered.

[Q] Anyone going to pass up the S4?

So I've seen a lot of people saying that there are problems with the S4 screen, battery and overheating and that the phone was released prematurely.
I tried out my friends' S4s and was honestly underwhelmed. The screen had graphic artifacts and the UI wasn't smooth 100% of the time.
So my question is is anyone else thinking of passing up the S4 and waiting for Nexus 5/ Google X/Whatever?
For me it's currently an option to consider.
Your opinions please.

theres always gonna be teething problems on any phone tbh...and the galaxy s4 isnt any different thats why they have released a firmware update already in less then a week of release to fix some of these problems.
Im coming from a galaxy S2 so I dont think I will be passing up on my S4
how can anyone pass this beauty seriously the problems will be fixed soon and it will be the best phone in the world
Im probably going to pass on the S4 but not cause of the issues, they will eventually be fixed, but cause I decided to wait for the note 3. Doesn't make sense to buy an S4 then a note 3 since its going to be a very similar experience minus the S pen.

Yup that's the point for me. I have used all galaxy series and I am just addicted to it. Currently using note 2 and have to say nothing is better than it. However, s4 has really impressed me a lot. Lots of features which I always wanted to see. I was a bit disappointed this week after reading all the negative reviews here but its good to see that slowly these are getting fixed as almost all of the issues are software related. I cant keep my note 2 until OCt-Nov, so I will s4 now may be after a month and then I will move to note 3.
I think I'm going to wait until after the Google I/O in a few weeks to see what may be coming out. The Google 5 / X phone(s) are very intriguing. I love my S3 and thought it was a foregone conclusion that would upgrade to the S4 but don't know. I've also read about a possible waterproof S4 coming out in June which sounds interesting. I really want to try the Sony Z phone but don't want to go to ATT.
I had a SZ and switched to S4 and I don't regret it. I really enjoy this phone (got it yesterday). Sure, there are some problems but as others stated, every phone has problems right after launch.
If you like the S4 then get it. If you are not sure, try to play with one and then decide. Waiting for better devices coming up in months just doesn't make sense - you could end up waiting forever

I love my GS4, I got a super deal on it too (I traded my Note 2 for a Macbook Air and a GS2, sold the MBA and bought my GS4)
Depends on how long it takes Samsung to make the higher capacity versions available.
I have a S3, so not sure tbh
I have the option of picking one up in beginning of June when i cash my shares in, by then hopefully most of the current problems are sorted by then.
On the otherhand I love my S3 this is my 2nd one after i moonlighted with the Nexus 4 for a short period of time, plus we get most of the features of the S4 in the 4.2.2 update when that comes out & no doubt 4.3 sometime this later year aswell.
Problem with the S4 is it to similar to the S3, yes the S4 got better spec's but is the S3 gonna have problems at all this year running anything probably not.
I think a better upgrade form the S3 would be the S5, as i think we finally see either 2k or 4k video recording and 60fps in both 720 & 1080p & maybe optical IS aswell in the S5 if this being the case i be first in line for one.

Technically 1920x1080 recording is 2k lol
And I've been wishing for 4K recording since last year. 4K video, OIS, HFR and HDR will hopefully come as standard by end of this year.

Will definitely get it as soon as they will release the higher capacity versions, the problems people are talking about are software related and will be solved in a few weeks via updates.
I returned my GT-I9505 since I could not stand up to the screen issues and my money refund period was coming to an end. To be honest I would prefer the octa version over de Qualcomm because of the wolfson DAC, so right now I am going to be patient while both, the screen problems get fixed and I find a reliable retailer to buy in the GT-I9500 (not officially launched in my country).
I am fond of HTC One, but the lack of expandable SD and exchangeable battery matters to me.

Choosing between the 2

Hello guys...I know this thread has come up tens of times but after reading every single one I havent reach to a conclusion and this becomes very frustrating;/ [want to mention that I was an iPhone user from the first day. This is my first time with Android...wanted to give it a try cause I was sick of iPhones small screen]
So i have ordered the case and the memory card .. but yet I have chosen which phone to buy.
In my country I have the choice between the 2. Basically only one store in the whole country sells the "OCTA" version.
So let me tell you how I am going to use my device and please advise accordingly.
1. Facebook
2. Browsing
3. Music
4. GPS
5. Some normal gaming (Not Hardcore)
I want to use my device for long term 2+. I dont want in one year to experience lag because of a newer firmware etc etc. You got the point right?
Also my country does not support LTE. I am not using 3g because is SO SLOW and expensive...
I have read many Pros and Cons. For example:
i9500 - does not support OpenGL ES 3.0 + Not so good Battery Life + Not so much developer support + in a lot cases overheating
i9505 - Audio issues (crackling) + not so good audio and camera chip somthing like that...
Anws I think you got the point. Any suggestions will highly appreciated from both users (i9500 + i9505)
Thanks a lot!
no one? I know guys that this has been answered hundred of times but come on help one new android user
I would suggest i9505. I'm not a fan of samsung phones because were using lately most of the time nexus devices. And I can tell you if you want a stability of an iphone(not trolling ) and all the goodies from android go with 9505 put the Google version of Android on this phone and you'll be good to go.
First thing when I heard that this Samsung will be available with vanilla android I went to the shop and bought it.

Hi mate,
I also changed to the S4 for the same reasons (previously had iphone). At the time I actually wanted to get the i9500 but they hadn't hit the shelves yet. So I ended up with the i9505.
I find it a bit confusing that your country doesn't support 4G and you aren't going to have 3G. So you won't have mobile data? But perhaps you plan to use the internet over wifi? Maybe I didn't read your original post properly.
Anyway
If I was you I would buy the i9505 (which is what I have). Primarily because there seem to be less issues and the performance isn't *that* much worse than the i9500. I use my phone for exactly what you have listed and its been great.
Now that i've got the i9505 i've never looked back

Thanks again!
Man, take 9505 for sure. Audio is very good and camera is the best I've ever seen in my life. Photos are sharp and beautiful, no pink spots (as there were on GS2), video is superb. Shutter speed could be something better but taking photo in about half of a second will suffice and I'm sure Samsung will improve it even further. CPU is just insane. It's so powerfull that even in few years it'll still overrank most phones (as GS2 does now).
Go to sammobile.com and look in how many countries 9505 is available comparing to 9500. Also Google have choosen 9505 - that means something - why not Exynos or Exynos with LTE. Look like Exynos version is best for benchmarks and Qualcomm best to use. I would definitely not exchange my 9505 for any other device available today as it meets all my needs and prove to be the very best phone I've ever have. There are some theoretical cons as shutter speed but from I can say - if You don't read about them You will not notice them Interface lags were eliminated with MEA rom. Check if it's already available for You region. This is obvious that there will be much more issues described with 9505 on forums as great majority of GS4s are 9505.
The only problem with buying any Galaxy S device is that You cannot check the screen before buy as it's covered with black foil. My GS2 had some visible flaws on it. I got used to them as many ppl said that it's very common. Luckily my GS4 screen is almost perfect with just some markings characteristic to amoled.

Thanks for your reply also... until now only i9505 answered back to this thread... lets see if any i9500 will give me his own opinion...
With new updates 9500 never heats up, im happy with battery life, not even one issue is on my phone. We have both here in my country, and i chosed the octa version. I know we have less support by devs but personally i don use stock android, i hope it will be for people who like aosp roms. But for me 9500 is really beast.

thanks mate!! need more info though
any other suggestions guys? Thanks a lot!
Mate, people who own an i9500 will tell you to buy an i9500, and people who own an i9505 will tell you to buy an i9505. They will both list what it does well, what it doesn't do so well, and what has been fixed and so on. Ultimately, the only person you should be listening to is yourself. If you want LTE and more developer support, go for the i9505. If you want 8 cores to boast about, and perhaps a tiny bit faster processing, go for the i9500. Both phones are identical for what you get (excluding what's under the hood) and if you are only going to be using the phone like an average person, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the i9505, and no reason for you to have that extra processing power (not that the i9505 can't handle it anyway). Anyway what I'm saying is, the choice is yours, and letting other people tell you what to buy is a bad thing, the information is there about both phones, you must study this carefully, understand all, and then make your decision.
And just to clarify, my camera performs perfectly, and this is with my phone being on an older firmware as my carrier is useless at pushing updates. Also, the audio quality is great on my i9505, I use Beyerdynamics in-ear headphones, and there is no problem with them whatsoever. I guess the problems people suffer from their phones are luck of the draw, and I must be one of the lucky ones. If you have any problems, return the phone within the 2 weeks most carriers allow you.

Noted. thanks!
No big difference in performance.
But i9505 have better developer support. My modest guess is that i9500 owners have to wait some time (or ever?) to get same support that i9505 will have.
BTW I don't want to use LTE/4G because of big battery drain. Sometimes I even turn off 3G and that makes a HUGE difference compared to 2G.

That is true..also I will nener use 4G or 3G only WIFI.
Thanks
I had hard time choosing between the 2 but i choosed 9500 because the camera is a bit better and better music playback because of the Wolfson DAC.
I have no regrets, i love it, im using XXUBMF8 firmware.

I am feeling the same way .... hard time choosing... it s.ck.s
Unless camera is your top priority just go with i9505. It has better battery life, more developer support, better support in games.
I won't say that I am not satisfied with my i9500 but its not worth paying any premium compared to i9505.
Right now and most probably in the future, the i9500 is not utilizing its 8 cores. Not even does well with battery life compared to i9505.

You can give a nexus 5 a try, maybe the htc one.
But personally i love my s4, if you try to have the last and most fashioned tech ever you will end with a new phone eveey two weeks...
But yeah what one you had? The i9505 or i9500.
I ask that cause you need to keep in mind all roms and posibilities you have with one or another.
I have a 9500 and slowly but surelly roms and magic start to roll and now i have 4.3 and my little beast run everything smooth, with no issues.
So my answer is yes it whorth it..
Sorry for the long answer...
Good luck

Although the lack of camera and external storage on the nexus 5 is very off putting... I'm still very tempted. Would have 200 left if I sold my phone. And it looks stunning the nexus 5 does.

well if u are asking if it s kinda old news , then yeh . the s5 will come out in a couple of month according to samsung so it s bettet to wait. Also as ktouy said u might want to give the nexus 5 a try .
Yes it's still a great phone and still getting updates. If you are a fan of always getting the latest things you could go for a nexus 5.

only if you need the camera or sdcard
nexus 5 kill every phone out there and you can buy more stuff
but s4 camera is really epic
Thanx guys.. Actually m not heavy user not much camera just personalisation fan obviously should smooth.. But my next question is.. after buying s4 spending big money.. Will worth? I mean my friends(include girl friend) xD.. will think that "shee!! This is s4 how cheap.. Not good"
That is second thing I don't want...
So. Is there any thing like that?

If you want to stick with s4 you can buy the I 9506 with the new snapdragon s800.Then you will have your beloved phone with new top specs
NO. Wait for S5. If it's January then it's not long. Going to Nexus from S4 is ridiculous unless you are a fan of that other thing, AOSP or whatever, a dumb display, impossible.
However S4 is pretty badly optimized outta box. You need to install a custom kernel and do some tweaks to make it run smooth. 4.3 is another big blunder Samsung has done, a testing ROM got released just to stay in competition with other brands and their upgrade schedule. If it weren't for the size I would never have sold the Note 2, God it was so smooth, so much better optimized than S4!
