So I've seen a lot of people saying that there are problems with the S4 screen, battery and overheating and that the phone was released prematurely.
I tried out my friends' S4s and was honestly underwhelmed. The screen had graphic artifacts and the UI wasn't smooth 100% of the time.
So my question is is anyone else thinking of passing up the S4 and waiting for Nexus 5/ Google X/Whatever?
For me it's currently an option to consider.
Your opinions please.

theres always gonna be teething problems on any phone tbh...and the galaxy s4 isnt any different thats why they have released a firmware update already in less then a week of release to fix some of these problems.
Im coming from a galaxy S2 so I dont think I will be passing up on my S4
how can anyone pass this beauty seriously the problems will be fixed soon and it will be the best phone in the world
Im probably going to pass on the S4 but not cause of the issues, they will eventually be fixed, but cause I decided to wait for the note 3. Doesn't make sense to buy an S4 then a note 3 since its going to be a very similar experience minus the S pen.

Note 3 won't be out in the U.S. until November.
Half a year is a huge amount of time to wait in the electronics world.

Yup that's the point for me. I have used all galaxy series and I am just addicted to it. Currently using note 2 and have to say nothing is better than it. However, s4 has really impressed me a lot. Lots of features which I always wanted to see. I was a bit disappointed this week after reading all the negative reviews here but its good to see that slowly these are getting fixed as almost all of the issues are software related. I cant keep my note 2 until OCt-Nov, so I will s4 now may be after a month and then I will move to note 3.
I think I'm going to wait until after the Google I/O in a few weeks to see what may be coming out. The Google 5 / X phone(s) are very intriguing. I love my S3 and thought it was a foregone conclusion that would upgrade to the S4 but don't know. I've also read about a possible waterproof S4 coming out in June which sounds interesting. I really want to try the Sony Z phone but don't want to go to ATT.
I had a SZ and switched to S4 and I don't regret it. I really enjoy this phone (got it yesterday). Sure, there are some problems but as others stated, every phone has problems right after launch.
If you like the S4 then get it. If you are not sure, try to play with one and then decide. Waiting for better devices coming up in months just doesn't make sense - you could end up waiting forever

I love my GS4, I got a super deal on it too (I traded my Note 2 for a Macbook Air and a GS2, sold the MBA and bought my GS4)
Depends on how long it takes Samsung to make the higher capacity versions available.
I have a S3, so not sure tbh
I have the option of picking one up in beginning of June when i cash my shares in, by then hopefully most of the current problems are sorted by then.
On the otherhand I love my S3 this is my 2nd one after i moonlighted with the Nexus 4 for a short period of time, plus we get most of the features of the S4 in the 4.2.2 update when that comes out & no doubt 4.3 sometime this later year aswell.
Problem with the S4 is it to similar to the S3, yes the S4 got better spec's but is the S3 gonna have problems at all this year running anything probably not.
I think a better upgrade form the S3 would be the S5, as i think we finally see either 2k or 4k video recording and 60fps in both 720 & 1080p & maybe optical IS aswell in the S5 if this being the case i be first in line for one.

Technically 1920x1080 recording is 2k lol
And I've been wishing for 4K recording since last year. 4K video, OIS, HFR and HDR will hopefully come as standard by end of this year.

Will definitely get it as soon as they will release the higher capacity versions, the problems people are talking about are software related and will be solved in a few weeks via updates.
I returned my GT-I9505 since I could not stand up to the screen issues and my money refund period was coming to an end. To be honest I would prefer the octa version over de Qualcomm because of the wolfson DAC, so right now I am going to be patient while both, the screen problems get fixed and I find a reliable retailer to buy in the GT-I9500 (not officially launched in my country).
I am fond of HTC One, but the lack of expandable SD and exchangeable battery matters to me.

After owning the galaxy there's no question in my mind most of us will remain with Samsung and android especially people who use custom Roms. But what's next after having this amazing phone?
It has been a year now since I've had mine, and obviously its soon time to upgrade.
For me I think ill skip the galaxy Note... I don't think its worth the upgrade just yet.
CES is just round the corner, and something else after that I think? I'm holding out to see whether Samsung's planning an SIII for this half of the year. We've already seen a supposed leaked shot taken from a device with the product code i9500 from inside a Samsung office.... It seems fairly probable that we'll see something by February as we have for the last 2 years. What are other peoples thoughts?
Personally, I am really disappointed with Samsung leaving 10 million plus SGS owners off the ICS train (especially because of their touchwiz that sucks), and I wanna show it to them by not buying their products. I'm still waiting for a stable custom ics sgs rom. I would have eyed the galaxy nexus, but it kind of bothers me that it's samsung. but it does not have the touchwiz and will get updates fast.
I'm quite fed up with the so called android fragmentation, but don't want to go the apple way. I want more nexus-like products with clean android and fast updates. Guess I'm screwed...

Somebody mis-translated the original Korean statement and it all went a bit mad on here. No reason to boycott Samsung anymore.
Im hoping the S3 isn't too far around the corner. As much as I would have gone for the recent Nexus S or whatever it is, its specs leave me cold. No memory slot? Pfft.

After one year with my SGS I'm still totally satisfied with it. I can read ebooks, play games or watch movies without any problems. Currently I don't need more memory, higer resolution screen or multicore processor. But perhaps when SGS III hits the market and devs/modders will start playing with it, I'll probably buy it.
I'm waiting for the s3. Hope it is announced at the CES

To OP: Wait for the SIII. The Note is just ridiculously oversized for a phone. I have seen people talking on it, and it looks stupid. You might as well walk around with a laptop stuck to your face. That way, at least no one can tell who you are.
I'm waiting. For the moment i'm satisfied with my Galaxy S. No need (for me) to buy a new one. And there will be new Roms for it,too.
The Galaxy note isn't a Smartphone - it's a very small tablet. For a smartphone it's too big, and for a tablet too small. Odd product.
SGS3. Nothing else.

I think I'm lucky in that my contract ends in November and when I sign up for a new one (not sure with whom yet), I will get a new phone. If the S3 comes out in the 1st half of 1012, by November, it will be less expensive and I can get it cheaper.
I am super happy with my SGS and for what I use my phone for, I don't really need a new one, but I guess for 4G or LTE it's worth it, and it will be cheap since I will get it on a contract.

same here i can change phone in december, and am waiting for post ces releases to see what comes next, anything with tegra 3 or samsungs equivalent
will be waiting for galaxy S III,should be a spectacular device.
am thinking of the galaxy nexus or galaxy s III
Hey guys, I love my nexus s and i can't wait for jelly bean. But i can get the galaxy nexus for 50 euros (my wife has a very expensive plan + sale + selling my nexus s to a friend).
I need the extra power and the better screen (i9023 S-LCD vs AMOILED), but i'm confused if the added size is a drawback.
Anyone that has both ?

You mean screen size or phone size? Gsm arena can help you with this:

GNex
GNex also have the same 5 megapixel camera(But it have 1080p video recording). That is the bad thing.
Don't doubt about the screen size,With the award winning superiour curved screen,u can hold the galaxy nexus in one hand.
So GNex is really worth it if u don't care for a camera.

what's bad about 1080p?
And the camera has a slighter bigger resolution and there's a lot more differences than you think.
Front facing camera does 720p
Dual core duhh (chipset is different0
a lot more features
1Gb of Ram versus 512Mb
GNex has MHL USB
Dual band
3.0 BT versus Nexus S's 2.0
HD screen versus 480x800
Bigger 3G network
Hey I am also saying that gnex is great...I just said that camera is only 5mp compared to similar dual core phones.
And I mean 1080p is great on gnex.

I have a similar but related question: Currently on Sprint with a rooted Nexus S4G.
Do I:
Option A: Keep the NS4G and have rooted ROMs based off an official release within (presumably) weeks?
Option B: Get a cheap (possibly as low as $0.01 from Amazon) Sprint Galaxy Nexus 4G (Not AOSP) but possibly wait months for the same?

I may not want the newest hardware if I'm not going to be able to run the newest software on it for a long time. From what I've been reading, the NS4G + AOSP JB may actually be superior to the Samsung GS4G +ICS.
Sigh, decisions.
go for it. I upgraded mine a while ago, it's been fantastic.

I am extremely curious where you read this. Is there an article or thread I can read through?
EDIT: I mis-read. I didn't see this was JB vs ICS. Essentially, I would assume that's opinion unless you are talking specific data benchmarks, in which case I'm still curious to see the data.
Love my nexus s, i have two contracts, one i use my nexus s on the other i upgraded from an HTC desire hd to a galaxy note, wish i had got the galaxy nexus now though. I do like my note, but really wish i had got the galaxy nexus instead to go with my nexus s and upcoming nexus7 when i finally get round to ordering it.
I own a Nexus S, but I've already used Galaxy Nexus a couple of times. I really prefer Nexus S' size over Galaxy Nexus', but the second has so many advantages over the former that I really doubt you'd care about it being a little too big. And, well, in the worst case, get the Galaxy Nexus for $50, unlock it and sell it for almost the retail price, or simply sell it locked for almost the price that the carrier usually sells it.
Nexus S is a GREAT phone as well, sometimes I think I'd never use all the power of a Galaxy Nexus, cause I'm probably still far from using all the power (in terms of processing) of my Nexus S! The most notable advantages of GalNex, IMHO, are the 1Gb RAM, the zero shutter lag of camera (amazing!), the ability of taking pics while rec a video, the better front camera, the notification led (i miss so much in my NexS. :crying, the Face Unlock (maybe not really useful, but anyway cool ) and the higher priority on getting updates.
I don't know why you even have to think about this. I love my Nexus S and all but the Galaxy Nexus is a better phone in every way. If you have the chance to upgrade (especially for cheap) go for it.

You're correct, there's no specific data benchmarks. If there were, then I wouldn't have this dilemma, because I could just do a head-to-head comparison.
I'm making extrapolations based on the general consensus that JB has significantly improved response and battery life over ICS. If those improvements are significant enough on the NS4G, they could be essentially equivalent to a hardware upgrade.
What is almost undeniable is that JB will be delayed getting to the Sprint GN4G. Based on past history, it wouldn't be surprising to not see it available until December. That could be verrrry frustrating.
A lot of questions would be answered in the off chance that JB gets pushed to the NS4G along with the NS in the next week, so we'll see.

This.
Going to anything smaller just doesnt work anymore.
And even though most of my friends and family who say they'll never get one, can't seem to put down my phone when i come over. I think they are waiting for the day their contract is up :cyclops:
What about the s3?
Also I think this might belong in the q and a section instead.
i tried the note 1 liked got use to the size but was bit issues with pocket for me..i dont wear tight jeans..try it out and you can always return it like i did..new note 2 sure is a nice device i just got a GS3 when it came out here in US was the lucky few to grab one before anyone else..i dont really even talk much on the phone..mostly a data user
I would recommend the note 2 definitely.
I started on an iphone 3g to iphone 4. I found about custom themes/roms on android then got a galaxy s2. the s2 dominated apple iphones. when I saw the note 1 come out I was like sweet, my priority is web/movies. when I got the note 1 I couldn't put it down. I would never downgrade in size, but that's because I use it primarily for facebook, the web and movies. unfortunately I hard bricked it awhile ago installing a wrong zip file
so I can't wait till the note 2 comes out. I will be all over it like a fly on sh!t
I would recommend it. I had an iPhone up until spring this year when I went to HK and bought a SGN1 and now whenever I handle my iphone I just can't get used to that small screen anymore. The large screen area of the SGN really makes a huge difference. Even though my SGN1 is only 6 months old I feel it had some shortcomings (primarily lag related) which should be rectified with the SGN2.
I agree. Once you have the Galaxy Note, you can never go back to a smaller screen. I was hoping the Note 2 would be 6". *sigh*
cant wait for galaxy note 2 to come out and very disappointed with Samsung as always they delay the product by 5-6 weeks after they show it,they should put it as soon as possible to get the customers and look crapple they going to rls next week and they only show it on the 12 damn crap iphone and hate that piece of crap widget phone, then next one will be Samsung Galaxy S5 by the time [18 months contract finish]
Most probably s4 is coming on Feb 2013...so i will go for that.

I've had 3 galaxy note ( 1st model) and i can say that galaxy ote is one of the greatest phones every. don't care about the screen. it's wonderful even if is very big.but you will be proud to have it in your pants.
I see more and more people using their phone not for calling/speaking to others, but for music, Web Browsing, Social media and watching media content. Adding to all this, even if you call others very frequently, people use bluetooth headsets or hands-free. So, I tend to feel that the 'Galaxy Note being too big' argument doesn't hold water anymore. As long as you can figure out a way to fit into your pocket, or keep it safe when you move around, it is definitely a sure to have phone.
I'm changing from S2(i9100) - S2(i9100G) - Galaxy Note(N7000)... then now i'm waiting for Note 2...
can't really go back to smaller screen, hurts my eyeballs
and also hooked on Super Amoled.... LCD are just not that level... :fingers-crossed:
I wanted to get people's opinions about the Note II.
Do you guys like the phone?
What is the state of the roms do they have full functionality of the s-pen?
Do the roms have the ability to hot spot?
How difficult is this to root (i have rooted all my devices from the original evo to the 3d, and nexus 7, and etc) does this fall into the average difficulty or does it get odd (jubunto wire trick...)
Is the moding community active/healthy?
I know these are a lot of questions, but but my evo 3d is dying and I might have to etf my line loose my phone number in order to replace this(unless I want to rebuild my system two times once when I get my evo repaired and once when I can upgrade in April..) if I am going to do that I want to make a smart decision on a phone that can last me the full two year term on my contract.
Anyone that can and does help thanks in advance.

There is only ONE thing which can go wrong with this phone; since Samsung is not releasing the soruce code for Exynos chipset, developers are having hard time for making daily suitable ROMs and if Samsung suddenly decides to cut updates off after -say- 1 year than Note 2 starts to age rapidly because of the lack of the up-to-date ROMs. But if we look at the SGS2's past it seems like that is not the case. So, nothing to worry about I guess. .
You will not regret buying this phone! When you get used to the bigger screen, it is just too awesome!
To answer one of your questions, it is super simple to root. I believe you can find the program in the dev section
Best android phone so far for me. Had a lot of high ends but note2 was and is the best. Rooting is easy, dont need big knowledge just need to learn to use google or xda search and read a bit. Note 2 community isnt so big now but later it will increase, same as was for other phones, just need more time. If you are not smartphones geek, note 2 could last you even more than 2 years, it is fast, good hardware, nice software additions. You wont regret ;D
Trollol. I would just like to answer 1 question,
It's not HTC difficult to root this phone
Note 2 best handset there is ... stay clear of htc !

you won't regret it. It'll take about 1 day to get use to the phone size after that every other phone will feel too small and like a toy.
I wouldn't even say, "wait for CES". This phone is so capable and powerful it'll still be better than 95% of anything coming at CES. And will easly last you 2 years.
buy it. NOW
omega rom v9. 1 kalgas mixed theme
thought i might put my opinion for you
I have had HTC's for years
TYTN, TYTNII, Touch HD, Desire then Sensation XE
I was used to Rooting HTC's and was flashing roms pretty often trying to get the best battery and performance and when i saw a mate with a Note II i wanted one but was a bit worried with the rooting etc.
Now after using the Toolkit and making Backups of EFS and Nand etc and then rooting , and now just yesterday flashing the latest XXDLL4 rom its turned out to be pretty easy.
As regards to the phone even though it has a bigger screen the battery life is amazing compared to any HTC i have had (a friend has a HTC One X and he struggles to get a day even with light usage ) but i use the note for everything even playing a fair amount of games and youtube vids etc and so far i have not run low on battery before the end of the day .
the speed is superb it just does not feel laggy at all and it's great to actually have 2gb ram as i no longer have to worry about memory management at all.
At first the big screen was weird but after a day or so i could not go back to anything smaller, you just get used to it and then realise that the biiger screen just gives you so much (although i use nova launcher to take advantage of the space)
the Spen is a good feature but not one that i have used a great deal but when i want to write notes its much easier to use the pen rather than my finger.
if i had one issue it is with the size as its difficult to use onehanded but i'm getting used to that.
In conclusion its by far the best Phone i have owned and with all of the HTC phones i have owned i have always looked at the next phones due for release but with this one i cant say that i would look to replace it for quite a while.
Best phone on the market!

Feel happy with the note 2, big screen, long battery time, fast cpu, 2gigs of ram(really really smooth), write instead of typing anymore, fully feeling its power using s note, floating things, its just the first smartphone that I feel it is really smart :victory:
I'm really close to buying the note 2. The only things stopping me is that the phone has been out for some months now, since September. And I'm a bit worried everyone is going to jump ship when the Sony Yuga (because of sources) and Galaxy S4 (because of hardware) come out.
Goddamnit, I can't decide.
Lol. The next big thing is always around the corner. You could be enjoying a note 2 right now and watch from the side lines comfortably for at least a year right now. I don't want to jump right in to A15 chip sets til they've matured a bit and see who utilizes it the best. I am pretty sure by September/October next year all the big phones will be out except perhaps the next nexus.

Hehe yea I know. It's just that the note 2 has been out for almost 4 months, and it's not like the price has dropped that much, here in denmark. And it seems that the exynos sources aren't coming out, which could add to the lifespan of the phone.
On the other hand, the note has a pen and a huge battery. Decisions, decisions.

Get it. Its that good as is. This coming from a guy that has had 3 nexii. You can freeze mist of the bloat, freeze Samsung's ****ty keyboard and put Google's 4.2 keyboard on and you're good to go.

Best phone ever
I want to buy the s4 (gt-i9500 model) and I come from s3.
I just wanted to ask whoever got the phone already and had the galaxy s3 if there was any downgrade in user experience from the s3?
downgrade in user experience? seriously? i mean its not life-altering fast, but it is way faster than my S3 is and the screen is a lot better. got one for my wife and she loves it
I have just bought one today and i'm upgrading from a Galaxy S2 (i9100) and i can say the upgrade is pretty big experience wise as well as sound and display wise.
Coming from an S3 to an S4 the impact is not so big but i don't know if it's such a big improvement to be worth the upgrade unless you can sell your phone and get enough money to cover at least half of the cost of the S4.
worth the trade. No joke. Ive gone from the s1 to s2 to s3 and now the s4. massive improvement every time.

Upgrading from s3 should be a straight forward decision, no thinking what so ever, it is way better than s3 and beats it in every dept, upgrading from note 2 is still a question mark though, so I am taking my time.

I did that. And I am happy with it.

I actually made the upgrade from a note 2 which is basicly a bigger s3.
What i miss is the bigger screen. Also the device is very Light! It takes time to get used to it.
In terms of speed the note 2 does feel smoother. But then again, it's gotten the **** tweaked out of it and it's overclocked. Also, a custom rom makes a huge difference. Multitasking lags a bit for me on the s4.
Now, what actually makes it worth while for me is the nice screen the s4 has!
It's so damn nice and sharp. The note 2 should have been 1080p.
However , the s4 will get custom firmwares and kernels, it's just a matter of time.
Can't want till the s4 gets custom kernels.
Btw, just to answer your question. My mom has a s3 and i played alot with it before i got the note2.
From a s3 to s4 is really worth the upgrade! If you have a note2 however, try it out for a few weeks before making a choice. The s4 has not custom firmwares yet, it is rooted tho. Cwm ain't fully avaiable as well. Lets see in about a month
I would love to upgrade from S3 to S4, but the main thing holding me back is the probable Development lag. CM team seams to be p****d of from
Sammy. We still waiting for missing codes on the S3, the main reason why the AOSP roms are not fully functional
Any advices are welcome, otherwise HTC one

i think the only problem with dev on the S4 is the bootloader, but from what i can tell on Cyanogen's G+ page, he already has CM10.1 on his Tmo S4
and im running AOKP on my S3, what doesn't work?
Go for it. And you will love it.

CM development has already begun for the qualcomm version. In fact, the qualcomm version is expected to see faster dev work coz qualcomm provides the proper drivers and binaries required. Steve Kondik has already built an alpha build of cm for the s4 with all core functions and even baseband radio working.
Thank you all, I think i'll wait a while until the price drops below 3500 NIS (~1000USD) and buy it.
Thanks for your help
The only thing stopping me from upgrading the sgs3 to sgs4 is the narrow field of view for pictures - other than that user experience etc is very similar... but is a showstopper for me.
Most of the "drawbacks" are software based, and you'll get a much more powerful device in your hands when development kicks off Go for it if you're coming from S3!
The big difference is if you currently have the 32gb version, since it has 17gb more storage for apps than the S4. If you are not a gamer and have the 16gb S3, you should be good to go
Since games play great on the S3 and 1080p seems not as important on a small display, I will wait for the 32gb version. If no 32gb version is released, I will keep my S3 A big BLEH though to Verizon if they don't carry the 32gb version. I preordered with Best Buy, but will cancel if just 16gb offered.
