hm.. next phone?? - Galaxy S I9000 General

After owning the galaxy there's no question in my mind most of us will remain with Samsung and android especially people who use custom Roms. But what's next after having this amazing phone?
It has been a year now since I've had mine, and obviously its soon time to upgrade.
For me I think ill skip the galaxy Note... I don't think its worth the upgrade just yet.

CES is just round the corner, and something else after that I think? I'm holding out to see whether Samsung's planning an SIII for this half of the year. We've already seen a supposed leaked shot taken from a device with the product code i9500 from inside a Samsung office.... It seems fairly probable that we'll see something by February as we have for the last 2 years. What are other peoples thoughts?

Personally, I am really disappointed with Samsung leaving 10 million plus SGS owners off the ICS train (especially because of their touchwiz that sucks), and I wanna show it to them by not buying their products. I'm still waiting for a stable custom ics sgs rom. I would have eyed the galaxy nexus, but it kind of bothers me that it's samsung. but it does not have the touchwiz and will get updates fast.
I'm quite fed up with the so called android fragmentation, but don't want to go the apple way. I want more nexus-like products with clean android and fast updates. Guess I'm screwed...

Somebody mis-translated the original Korean statement and it all went a bit mad on here. No reason to boycott Samsung anymore.

Im hoping the S3 isn't too far around the corner. As much as I would have gone for the recent Nexus S or whatever it is, its specs leave me cold. No memory slot? Pfft.

+1 probably get the S3

After one year with my SGS I'm still totally satisfied with it. I can read ebooks, play games or watch movies without any problems. Currently I don't need more memory, higer resolution screen or multicore processor. But perhaps when SGS III hits the market and devs/modders will start playing with it, I'll probably buy it.

I'm waiting for the s3. Hope it is announced at the CES

I suggest you buy the Galaxy nexus, it's great!

This value pack does sound a little cheap. I bet its a few new wallpapers Haha. I personally like Samsung a lot but I'm disappointed by the decision.

but still, it is better than samsung doing nothing

The value pack isn't happening.
To OP: Wait for the SIII. The Note is just ridiculously oversized for a phone. I have seen people talking on it, and it looks stupid. You might as well walk around with a laptop stuck to your face. That way, at least no one can tell who you are.

I'm waiting. For the moment i'm satisfied with my Galaxy S. No need (for me) to buy a new one. And there will be new Roms for it,too.
The Galaxy note isn't a Smartphone - it's a very small tablet. For a smartphone it's too big, and for a tablet too small. Odd product.

SGS3. Nothing else.

I think I'm lucky in that my contract ends in November and when I sign up for a new one (not sure with whom yet), I will get a new phone. If the S3 comes out in the 1st half of 1012, by November, it will be less expensive and I can get it cheaper.
I am super happy with my SGS and for what I use my phone for, I don't really need a new one, but I guess for 4G or LTE it's worth it, and it will be cheap since I will get it on a contract.
Ian

same here i can change phone in december, and am waiting for post ces releases to see what comes next, anything with tegra 3 or samsungs equivalent

will be waiting for galaxy S III,should be a spectacular device.

am thinking of the galaxy nexus or galaxy s III

What's your thoughts on the upcoming Galaxy S II

I ask this question as a current Vibrant owner from the day it came out. I have seen all that Samsung has done with its first line of Galaxy S phones and so I'm not sure if all the new technology is going to be worth the upcoming headaches. Its easier to get a working ROM from the community rather than deal with official Samsung updates.
If you feel the same way I do, do you feel like the Vibrant is the last Samsung device you'll ever buy?
I'm just curious and it might help me make a decision on buying any upcoming devices from Samsung. Also since I've learned that the new Sidekick is going to be a Samsung device, I'm already depressed about that one.

I will definitely be upgrading if possible. I love the vibrant, but I'm not sure if it will ever see 2.4. I remember reading somewhere that 2.4 will utilize hardware acceleration for the ui, I'm really looking forward to that.
This will be my next phone love the phone............
I'm currently trying to decide if I am going to upgrade to it or hold off for something else. I think it just depends on what else comes out at MWC and when the release date will be on the S II.

It's between this and HDdesire2 similar specs HTC doesn't seem to have a ffc.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
http://galaxys2.samsungmobile.com/html/specification.html
I bought the galaxy s cause it had the most powerful cpu in the bunch + screen. The s2 = better screen + 1gb ram + dual core processor that's better than the hummingbird and the mali400 gpu is way better than current sgx540. Overall, it'll be the most powerful device in terms of hardware, i'll find some way to afford one!!
But yes, i'm pissed about the updates, wish they'd just release the source for everything and let the community do it if they don't want to.
Sent from my SXY-T959
It's not about buying it or not. That's a sure buy for me.
It's about when it'll be available on the T-Mo network. T-Mobile has its own 3G frequency(1700?) making buying a smartphone without this feature(i.e., that's not OEMed for T-Mo) a hard decision.
Im buying the first HSPA+, 4.3 inch Android phone T-Mo puts out. If this is it then ill be upgrading to this.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I don't know... it is going to be sooooo expensive unless they subsidize it on T-Mo. Right now you can get a decent Vibrant off craigslist for $250 off contract. That's pretty unbeatable. I doubt I'll be getting one of these for at least a year.
i prob wont end up getting it, samsung ruined their phones for me!
My next phone. Perfect timing with tax time
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Thank you community! Your input is very helpful. I guess time will tell when it has a tmo version. If it costs to much then no, if the price is right then Yes! or I just get the sidekick as im getting sick and tired of this virtual keyboard lol.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Never again. Fed up with Samsung and their wannabe-software.
Concentrate on what you know; hardware.
Im kind of up in the air...cool comes with 2.3 but 2.3 isn't that great that's why 2.4 is out in couple months to fix what issues 2.3 has and to add features 2.3 should have had if it wasn't rushed.
So who knows when it will get 2.4
If i do decided to get im getting a real galaxy s 2 and not from carrier one thing to wait from Samsung another to wait for tmobile on top of it
Depends on what HTC has available on T-Mobile, if somehow HTC puts out a competing phone it will be a tossup, but will come down to the screen size and how well SLCD holds up against SAMOLED

Wow have you guys seen this video? Seems very laggy - http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-official-tegra-2-4-3-inch-super-amoled-plu/
Getting a Windows Phone. Tired of dealing with manufacturer skins or crippled Nexus phones (i.e. Nexus S).
Also, why do people put up with the high rate at which Android Manufacturers cannibalize their devices.
Vibrant 4G may have good download speeds but who will want it if T-Mobile gets a Galaxy S II Variant - the same way some people are getting Nexus S due to the Vibrant's issues?
That's 4 new phones announced since the Vibrant was released... 6 months or so? And I'm ignoring it's sister phones on the ohter 3 major carriers and phones like the Continuum on Verizon...
It's hard for these non-Nexus devices to keep value when manufacturers are releasing new phones at such breakneck paces, and it makes it hard to commit to purchasing anything, since the chances of a better phone being released so soon is so high.
There's a reason why iPhones and even Windows phones are selling for more on eBay and CL than even high end Android phones...

The fanbois are running out of excuses. I wonder if they'll claim Android isn't optimized for Tegra II this time, like they did with the Hummingbird.
The issue was always Samsung's RFS and crappy TouchWiz. Why buy something with TouchWiz on it, and I wouldn't rule out RFS, either...
Also, is it just me or does that phone have some odd choices of pre-loaded applications... Vlingo, for example...
Looks like an iPhone 4, though.
I really wish they would get rid of the chrome and round out the phone little
like the NS but still looks nice

The Note is going to be like the dell streak. I thought it was way too big to be practical, and my predictions were correct. They phone/tablet had horrible sales. This seems to be a little smaller but I think 4.6 is max . I think 4.3 big enough already but holding a 5+ inch phone in your pocket all day seems like a pain.

"I thought it was way too big to be practical, and my predictions were correct."

shipped with an very old version of android, and had performance issues.

The Samsung Note is 5.3 which is even bigger then the Dell Streak.
"I think 4.3 big enough already but holding a 5+ inch phone in your pocket all day seems like a pain."
-another assumption? It is not a problem to have this phone even in the skinny pants that I wear all the time and I am extremely physically active.
"Galaxy nexus is my next phone the moment it drops on the sprint network"
-another bad choice, most of the world uses GSM and for good reason. If your are going to go with CDMA at least go with Verizon who has acceptable coverage only in the US. AT&T with an unlocked phone is the best choice especially if you are worldly and like to travel.

Galaxy Note is way better than Galaxy Nexus because of the Mali chipset, Nexus chipset is a real deal breaker, in my country Note is already selling like hotcakes where as nexus is loosing its market value.

When i bought my Note, I thought I would use it primarily as a small tablet, and that I would continue to use my HTC Sensation as my regular phone.
I learned very quickly that the size of the Note wasn't an issue, and that when I used my Sensation I just found it felt small and cramped. So, I swapped my primary SIM into the Note, and now use it as a daily driver.
Consequently, I fundamentally disagree with your assertion that the Note is too big, because it really isn't noticable either in the hand, or in the pocket.

Dave

I am a Samsung galaxy note owner after having the S2 & the HTC desire HD.
I cannot imagine ever going back to my former devices after using the Note!
It is by far the best phone I have ever had and to be quite honest I thought that the size would be a problem which later on, as I discovered, was not.
It fits in the same pockets as my S2 without any problem...
No comparison can be made hardware wise and surely if someone gets to use it, he won't compare it to any other device in circulation...

Upgrade Advice: SGS II vs GNex

Dear xda,
To many of you this may seem like a stupid question, and are probably thinking "this idiot should just go do some research" - I already have. I can get an upgrade as early as the 28th March (Just over a month away). I am not considering the SGS II (I already know it will be too expensive)
So this is what I know to make my decision upon, any other developments, user experiences welcome.
Galaxy Nexus Pros:
-Google ICS
-Will receive latest updates
-4.65" Screen 720x1280 HD
-Aesthetically pleasing
Galaxy Nexus Cons:
-PenTile matrix screen [everyone or reddit says not to worry, this screen is the **** and a lot better than sgsII's)
-Price
-Worse Camera than SGS II
-Worse GPU than SGS II
-Worse CPU??
Galaxy S II Pros:
-Getting ICS
-Cheap (£26pcm - will drop with release of SGS III)
-Awesome hardware
Galaxy S II Cons:
-Smaller screen than GNex 4.2" 480x800 WVGA
-Almost a year old (however still comparable to Gnex which is a "brand new" device)
-Not sure: worse android development than GNex??

May last I heard, but it'll be way too expensive, the only benefit it will give me is drive down the prices of those two phones.
Yes wait for a couple of months or you will repent for sure. Both the devices you have shortlisted will be outdated soon.

Prices will come down but I don't think by that much as this is still a powerful phone. It's selling well and I doubt we will see the SGS3 that early as most likely they will try to have a same timeish global launch considering it's pretty new in the States. I personally think they will try to compete with the iPhone 5 than anything else so may get a delayed launch but that's just what I think!
Hold tight as rumours it may get announced at the Amsterdam event next month so we may or may not get an indication of release date.
From a specs standpoint, the practical difference in high end Android devices is absolutely nothing. You aren't doing any computationally intensive operations like compiling source code or video conversions. You're running games and social media apps and texting and looking at emails.
Sure, the GSII has more megapixels, but I can't tell a difference in the picture quality. Plus, the Galaxy Nexus has a much fast shutter speed, which more than makes up for the 3 megapixels it's giving to the GSII.
The screen surface of the Galaxy Nexus is smoother than the screen surface of the GSII. I have no idea why, but the GSII isn't nearly as easy to fling your thumb across and shows fingerprints more.
The Galaxy Nexus has a recovery partition, the GSII doesn't. The Galaxy Nexus development is thriving and probably has 5 or 6 ROMs that are built from Android Source. There are 2 AOSP roms for GSII and several Samsung-based ROMs.
Really, I love both of the phones. There are ALWAYS better phones on the horizon. Always. Don't wait.

I'm in no rush anyway if I'm honest, the earliest I can upgrade is the 28th March (officially ends June 28th), I just want to know where I stand with phones so I can get right in there and not have to ponder too much about what I'm going to go for. Buy, or wait for next Nexus?

Looking for honest opinions. I know the GS3 is the best phone today, and there will always be a new thing coming out soon. But I feel like now is a time when in a few months, there might be a series of Nexus phones coming out, and these 2 will be the best Android devices for a while.
I've lived with my Evo for 2 years and a few more months is fine if there's a good chance the Nexus will be a big leap. On the other hand its so tempting to just get the GS3

It will definitely be interesting to see what the new nexus devices come out with. I always say I'll wait for this or wait for that, but inevitably I cave. You can't go wrong with the Galaxy S3. The international model will always have a strong developer following. I worry that the legendary developer following will become very fragmented when 5 different nexus devices are released. That has always been a claim to fame for the nexus line.

S3 for me hands down.
GNex was a pretty big disappointment for me. The only thing it had going for it was Vanilla Android 4.0 ICS. Everything else about the phone I really hated. If Samsung follows the same trend with the next Nexus, then the next Nexus will be another disappointment in my books.
However, rumors whisper the next Nexus may be a Motorola phone. We'll see.

We'll see.

If the next Nexus is a Motorola, then that will be a disappointment. Even though Google owns Motorola Mobility, If i see another "Droid" by Motorola I'm gonna projectile vomit...
Even though the GNex did not turn heads with its CPU/GPU/Cam, I think it was still a breakthrough device, it's still, to this day imho the best looking device out, front is literally flawless. LED notifier anyone? Even though I'm probably/most likely going to buy the SGS3, it's gonna be tough going back to a device that actually has buttons, that **** is old.....

The next Nexus is not going to be launched until the end of the year, given how quickly devices/tech rolls over, 5 months for a device is already pushing it. The S3 is a beastly of a phone, but trust me, by October/November, there will be rumblings of the S4, the Nexus will be out, or multiple Nexuses, and while most are going to still be waiting for ICS, Nexus users will be rockin' Jelly Bean..
I quite want one, but doubt I'll find anyone to take my skyrocket + cash for this beast of a phone.
No upgrades on my account until september/October I forget. So I guess I'll have to see if anything is good then if nobody will trade me now.

I think it's pretty dumb to wait for vaporware. If this was a device that had specs that'd make sense, but it seems pretty silly to wait on something and not even know WTF you're waiting for.
edit: Oh, sorry it isn't even vaporware. That's something that's announced and doesn't come to fruition. This hasn't even been announced or hinted at as of yet... silly.

I read a little while back that Google will work with multiple manufacturers for the next line of Nexus phones, including HTC, Samsung, Motorolla, and LG.

As you noted, there's always something new coming out. This means that the decision of when to jump in is entirely personal. I really think you should lay out your own minimum requirements and go from there. For me, the GS3 is a no go because one of my requirements is a next gen GPU, not a refreshed 2011 GPU. That's just one example of how I decide if I'm willing to upgrade yet. Until my desired specs are met I'm holding out with my sensation.

The nexus has repeatedly represent the minimum standard for android and I emphasize the minimum standard. Starting with the nexus one, first 1ghz android. Nexus s with old galaxy s 1ghz and now current galaxy nexus with a dual core 1ghz. Samsung galaxy s series has been known for exceeding that standard and creating
Premium specs. Galaxy s had the best cup/gpu, s2 best cup/gpu and now s3 which has demonstrated it has the top dog cpu /gpu. Samsung has show again and again it s committed to the best.

if you wait long enough, you could buy google glass.
joking aside, i think the GS3 is a significant upgrade from the phones from the S2 era... and i believe that the new nexus phone will not present that much of an upgrade save for Jelly Bean.

This is so true, and many people share the same sentiment on the galaxy nexus.
vanilla android is great but the hardware is so lacking and gimp.
The promise of having the latest upgrade is not true anymore, it barely got 4.0.4.
I felt sorry for the people that kept their phone stocked and was stuck on the buggy 4.0.1...
but yeah it did look sexy..
I for one would like to hear more details on what the five Nexus devices really are. Are they going to be competing phones, phones with predetermined near-identical specs for dev compatibility, or not phones at all? The former is the ideal case, in terms of hardware at least.1 Combined with the customizable soft nav-bar (I can't help but find non-customizable, non-rotatable nav buttons lame as hell now) the choice would be a no-brainer for me.
But that's an ideal scenario. (Nope, ideal scenario is the Nexus Note )
1 The second would probably be ideal for homebrew deving, but without competition there's no guarantee of real hardware improvements.
There are already ample amount of posts regarding this, so it's not fair to ask the same thing again and again, instead searching would have given you all the answers you need

The gnexus is 1.2 ghz omap. 4460 not 1. Do the ghz really matter anymore? All. These damn processors are fast. I want quadcore A15. I'd be fine it was 1ghz

If you're dead set on getting a Nexus, you should stick it out and wait for the next round because they're probably going to be awesome (word is 5 different manufacturers are gonna be making them). The SGS3 phone is a great device, but if you're looking at a Nexus then you're obviously wanting something vanilla and the SGS3 is very, very far from vanilla.
depends if you don't want to root then go nexus as that will be better in the update department but if you are rooting the sgs3 is definitely worth picking up now considering its the best smartphone of the summer and there will be a lot of dev support.
"All this knowledge is giving me a major brainer!"
look, the thing which is important is that can you wait with patience or not? if yes, then wait as long as you can to buy a better device than s3. there are no details out yet regarding next nexus, so no one can say how it will be. In this case you better buy s3 and enjoy ur present time.

So looking to upgrade to a new phone soon...

I wanted to get people's opinions about the Note II.
Do you guys like the phone?
What is the state of the roms do they have full functionality of the s-pen?
Do the roms have the ability to hot spot?
How difficult is this to root (i have rooted all my devices from the original evo to the 3d, and nexus 7, and etc) does this fall into the average difficulty or does it get odd (jubunto wire trick...)
Is the moding community active/healthy?
I know these are a lot of questions, but but my evo 3d is dying and I might have to etf my line loose my phone number in order to replace this(unless I want to rebuild my system two times once when I get my evo repaired and once when I can upgrade in April..) if I am going to do that I want to make a smart decision on a phone that can last me the full two year term on my contract.
Anyone that can and does help thanks in advance.

If u want a new phone which u gona keep for 2 years, I strongly suggest that u must wait a bit coz if u buy note 2 now then u'll feel bad when they launch new phones at CES.

Spoilers: It's awesome.
Also, you might want to ask in the Sprint Note II forum, this is for the international Note II, so the hot spot business is better answered there.

There is only ONE thing which can go wrong with this phone; since Samsung is not releasing the soruce code for Exynos chipset, developers are having hard time for making daily suitable ROMs and if Samsung suddenly decides to cut updates off after -say- 1 year than Note 2 starts to age rapidly because of the lack of the up-to-date ROMs. But if we look at the SGS2's past it seems like that is not the case. So, nothing to worry about I guess. .
You will not regret buying this phone! When you get used to the bigger screen, it is just too awesome!
To answer one of your questions, it is super simple to root. I believe you can find the program in the dev section
Best android phone so far for me. Had a lot of high ends but note2 was and is the best. Rooting is easy, dont need big knowledge just need to learn to use google or xda search and read a bit. Note 2 community isnt so big now but later it will increase, same as was for other phones, just need more time. If you are not smartphones geek, note 2 could last you even more than 2 years, it is fast, good hardware, nice software additions. You wont regret ;D
Trollol. I would just like to answer 1 question,
It's not HTC difficult to root this phone
Note 2 best handset there is ... stay clear of htc !

you won't regret it. It'll take about 1 day to get use to the phone size after that every other phone will feel too small and like a toy.
I wouldn't even say, "wait for CES". This phone is so capable and powerful it'll still be better than 95% of anything coming at CES. And will easly last you 2 years.
buy it. NOW
omega rom v9. 1 kalgas mixed theme
thought i might put my opinion for you
I have had HTC's for years
TYTN, TYTNII, Touch HD, Desire then Sensation XE
I was used to Rooting HTC's and was flashing roms pretty often trying to get the best battery and performance and when i saw a mate with a Note II i wanted one but was a bit worried with the rooting etc.
Now after using the Toolkit and making Backups of EFS and Nand etc and then rooting , and now just yesterday flashing the latest XXDLL4 rom its turned out to be pretty easy.
As regards to the phone even though it has a bigger screen the battery life is amazing compared to any HTC i have had (a friend has a HTC One X and he struggles to get a day even with light usage ) but i use the note for everything even playing a fair amount of games and youtube vids etc and so far i have not run low on battery before the end of the day .
the speed is superb it just does not feel laggy at all and it's great to actually have 2gb ram as i no longer have to worry about memory management at all.
At first the big screen was weird but after a day or so i could not go back to anything smaller, you just get used to it and then realise that the biiger screen just gives you so much (although i use nova launcher to take advantage of the space)
the Spen is a good feature but not one that i have used a great deal but when i want to write notes its much easier to use the pen rather than my finger.
if i had one issue it is with the size as its difficult to use onehanded but i'm getting used to that.
In conclusion its by far the best Phone i have owned and with all of the HTC phones i have owned i have always looked at the next phones due for release but with this one i cant say that i would look to replace it for quite a while.
Best phone on the market!

Thanks guys I'm thinking I will be upgrading tomorrow, and yes it will cost me my phone number as frigging sprint ended the buy out option,. But I'm thinking from what you guys said that it would be worth the switch as seeing as how adding a line is activation charge free till the seventh and seeing as how best buy price matches and this phone is going for 199 on both amazon and Frys I need to bite the bullet and jump on this train.
Or would you guys wave me off if the price tag included a new phone number?
Thanks,
Adan

For the second consecutive month, the Samsung Galaxy Note II dominated in both the People's Choice Chart and Mobile Tech Expert's Chart in PhoneDog Media's Official Smartphone Rankings™. It went uncontested all month long, never straying from the #1 position. For the time being, the Samsung Galaxy Note II shows no signs of slowing down or surrendering its top spot in the charts.
For the month of December, the Samsung Galaxy Note II proved it was a force to be reckoned with. It held first place in the People's Choice Chart and Mobile Tech Expert's Chart for each week throughout the month.

Yes, you are going to love this phone.
Feel happy with the note 2, big screen, long battery time, fast cpu, 2gigs of ram(really really smooth), write instead of typing anymore, fully feeling its power using s note, floating things, its just the first smartphone that I feel it is really smart :victory:
I'm really close to buying the note 2. The only things stopping me is that the phone has been out for some months now, since September. And I'm a bit worried everyone is going to jump ship when the Sony Yuga (because of sources) and Galaxy S4 (because of hardware) come out.
Goddamnit, I can't decide.
Lol. The next big thing is always around the corner. You could be enjoying a note 2 right now and watch from the side lines comfortably for at least a year right now. I don't want to jump right in to A15 chip sets til they've matured a bit and see who utilizes it the best. I am pretty sure by September/October next year all the big phones will be out except perhaps the next nexus.

Hehe yea I know. It's just that the note 2 has been out for almost 4 months, and it's not like the price has dropped that much, here in denmark. And it seems that the exynos sources aren't coming out, which could add to the lifespan of the phone.
On the other hand, the note has a pen and a huge battery. Decisions, decisions.
