How likely is internal damage? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm paranoid about my technology and today I dropped my phone from about waist hight, it landed on its back and I have an insepio feather case on it but I'm terrified I caused some sort of internal damage to it.
That said, how hard is it to cause internal damage from dropping a S4 with a light case on it? How would you know besides obvious things like a screen or vibration not working?
Thanks in advance! Hopefully your responses will calm my worry's about this. Also is there manufacturer protection on phones that you bought 2nd hand (I bought mine on Swappa).

Honestly it's hard to say. Every drop can be different. I've seen a video on YouTube where a guy runs over the phone with his car and it works. My mother has dropped her phone with just a flip cover on it and it works fine. Me on the other hand, have an Otterbox Defender on my phone, because I can be a bit more rough, have a more active lifestyle, etc, with my devices.
If your phone is still operating, chances are you're okay.

Dropped and sort of working... Help?

THE HORROR:
Had my nexus 16gb plugged in on my bed, knocked it off and cracked the plastic bezel in a 1inch chunk. It still works! Sort of... Except for the backlight. The only way the backlight works is by putting pressure over the spot the bezel cracked in. When it does work, it now has screen bleed issues, and quite badly... The screen works at all times, touch works, the lcd works at all times, it seems to just be the backlight.
The question is: Has anyone had something similar happen? Should i try to get a replacement screen? Take it apart (I'm quite handy with mechanical things) and see if the display connection is loose? Send it to Asus saying "screen is bleeding, new Nexus please?" Then playing dumb about the damage?
Any help would be awesome!
P.S. I'm a Jr in HS, and used the money from my summer job to buy it, and don't have enough left over to buy a new one... Especially since i need a 16gb.

I would send it back like you said, and act as though you had no idea about the damage you just want a perfect device and light bleed doesn't = A perfect device.
That is if your sending it through courier, if you got it from a local store that won't work. As you can't blame it on the shipping :/
Gutted for you btw, dont take this wrong way but SHUDDA GOTTA CASE
It's only 2 weeks old! Seriously have an amazon prime case coming that i ordered before the accident... It's just crap luck... I'll just pretend like i have no.clue what happened, but only after unrooting and installing the stock rom...

Sorry about your loss bud hope it works out for you!
Side note, are you from the cm7dx2 irc?
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
I did use cm7 and eclipse while I had my x2. Good chance you did see me in irc.
I know I should stay out of this, but the same people that are advising you to lie about your damage are the same ones that would flame you for saying that you were using a torrent to get paid games for free.
Do what you feel is right.
Never told him to lie just said I hope it works out for him. I feel sorry for a kid that saved his money to buy the device and then has a accident. But I never told him to lie about it. Just to clarify.
Just so both of you know, I posted a couple of ideas with no real preference, and am probably gonna end up opening it tonight and seeing if the connection is loose. The question was about what you would suggest to someone in a bind like mine.
What was the warez apps about though? Just for a metaphor? (If someone asks me how to get paid apps for free i just tell them to pony up $.99, even if i do know where to get it.)

Also, about pretending not to know. They would figure it out instantly. I've also excluded a blatantly fraudulent idea (buying one from walmart, returning mine, and keeping the new one).
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
Yeah, tough luck with that. My wife did the same thing to mine but it bounced on the carpet.. lucky.

Also, it now works. Except wifi crashes every 5 seconds... And banding.... Darn.

[Q] Nexus 4 replacement opened before shipped?

I can add pictures of the double taped box if anyone wants but basically it looks like my Nexus 4 replacement box has been opened and re-taped again. The first Nexus 4 I had shipped had only one set of black tape to seal the box but my Nexus 4 replacement has had the tape taped over as if the box has been opened. Has anyone else received a box that has had the first set of tape taped over? I sent google an email and the person I talked to told me that the device is in fact brand new and they do not sell refurbished devices.
Also, the sim opening tool bag looks like it has been opened and re-taped as well except not with an extra piece of tape this time but with either the original tape that came with it or another piece, but the bag is damaged as if it has been opened already. Anyone know what is going on with this? I have a feeling they may have checked the device to make sure there was nothing wrong with it, like the problem that made me send it back in the first place but I would really like to know the reason for this.
Please, anyone, if you have had the same thing happen or know why this has happened, please let me know!
Thanks for your time and interest.
Just check for scratches / problems. If it seems/ feels and responds well then don't break your head over it. If you have even the slightest scratch though, then do something about it. Otherwise I don't know if it matters

Well how else would the Fed have been able to install the tracking/eavesdropping software that is now monitoring your every move.
Honestly , mine didn't even have a sticker - bought before yesterday. But alone the fact that it had that front and back sticker (which after removing good luck putting it back on perfectly). left me with some confidence. I was worried at first but after seeing the state the phone is in I thought who cares as long as it seems new and has no scuffs/scratches. I can't stop emphasizing on how much I love my first nexus phone (3rd - 4th android phone). Simply gorgeous.

Should I return?

Recently my Nexus 4 got scuffed but I'm not sure how. Should I return the phone as it also rattles with minimal shaking and was made in January despite it being bought just around 4 days ago. This is the first phone I've scratched and I am horrified. It wasn't even me who did it, my mother dropped it while I was showing her it but no damage occured . The scuff then happened later for no apparent reason.
I love the phone and hate to lie and send the phone back but I could say it was also down to the rattling I was returning it?
What should I do?

Get it phone case and kick your brother's behind. LOL. No seriously, get a case or tell your brother to get you a case.
The rattle you hear I hear it on mine as well. I feel like a little baby. Goo goo ga ga
The rattle is normal, its the camera auto focus (or the sim tray). Google wont accept a damaged phone unless you really do the dirty on them and say it came like that.
Seems like everyone with OCD owns this phone.
We have guys shaking phones like a etch a sketch, pressing against the back glass trying to hear cracking sounds, looking at the phone from awkward angles just to see if the the glass is separating from the rubber bezel and now we have a guy ready to commit a crime cause his phone has a scratch.
SMDH

But I'm not entirely sure how it scratched so easily. I'm mythed how it got there. I've never scratched anything before. Even without Gorilla Glass.
I'm also convinced it could've been the bumper. It rattles even when moving the phone and not shaking it. The scratch has just made me lean towards a replacement more.
Will Google accept a scratched phone with a factory defect?
Yes they would accept it back with a factory defect but they could just repair the defect and send it back to you still scratched as that is not covered
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
as someone said before, the rattling is normal. every n4 rattles. a scratch won't hurt you and seeing how you caused it i don't think you should send it in. you got this thing for 299 $ which is a steal, they sold 10 pieces of it worldwide because they can't rival samsungs broadway antics - why putting even more weight on their shoulders.
this is why I got a case as soon my Nexus 4 arrived. Lmao! OP is gonna lie for it. Sure why not. Blame the phone companies for making the phone so easily breakable or maybe its the nature fault for the way it works.

I only bought it around 3/4 days ago. I could request a replacement. There is no way a phone should've scuffed/scratched that easily. I like the phone and don't want to live with scratches. I've seen people return scratched Nexus 4s to shops and they've accepted them. No I'm not going to lie. It's just that the scratch has made me lean towards an RMA.
Never have I scratched a phone.

Yes she did but the scuff appeared a couple of days after. I still don't know what caused it. I would live with the scratch if it was my fault and was small but I did nothing to scuff/scrape the phone. The scrape is along the right convex edge.

Trust me the scuff wasn't there. I wasn't happy and inspected the phone in all kinds of light. I also cleaned it plenty of times.
I have just read two other threads today... one from someone who RMA'd a phone with shattered back glass that stopped working, but neglected to mention the broken glass. Another from someone who mistakenly connected a 12v car battery directly to the charging port and fried the charging circuit (among other things) and neglected to tell Google about that as well. I won't cite countless other post I have read from folks exercising similar behavior.
I almost feel sorry for Google... but mainly feel sorry for people who still play by the rules and take responsibility for their own actions as they will most likely pay for the unethical behavior of others via higher pricing and more hoops to jump through to get legitimate issues taken care of in the future.
I agree. I'm sure Google wouldn't take a phone back only because its scuffed. I'm sure the original poster will create some fake reason why he's returning the phone.

I won't. I hate liars as much as everyone else. Personally, I was expecting my mother to pay for it (which didn't go down well )
The volume buttons aren't easy to press and the phone's sim tray (not the lense) rattles with normal use. Another problem is a line on the top left edge on the phone (looks like a plastic mold mark). I do actually have plenty of reason to replace the phone. It's just the scratch has made me lean to a replacement more. Not only that, I received the phone 4/5 days ago and it was made early February; and without plastic nubs.
Do what you gotta do, whatever makes you sleep better at night. I'm not sure how Google handles returns but they could easily consider that as wear and tear deny an RMA.

Sea water is bad. The salt corrodes electronic contact points really fast.

May be worth flushing with distilled water to clean the salt. I realize it's more water but it should help.

Looks like I'm done. Back with my old Gnex. Thanks guys, I'll try to open it and rub with alcohol; can't risk anything anyway.
Could you please explain why trying to turn it on does damage it more?
U can try all the above things but I don't think it would work in this case. Because u didn't pull the battery (not really possible very fast) your phone got short circuited and is probably dead.
Also, if it works your phone will get all sort of other problems after a while. This can be everything from reboots till cam failure.
My advise, sell it and get yourself a new one!

Too much heat is bad for any kind of electric devices. A little warm to dry up is pretty okay, but I recommend no heat at all. Heat will causes expansions that could misshape the devices and leads to other issues (such as disconnect in the mainboard, durability decreased, battery probably wears out faster). Higher temperatures also increase the electrical resistance of the conducting lines, slowing the signal speed and reducing performance.
Learned from my mistake with the ipod touch lol :silly:

Mate... Unfortunately my nexus 4 never turned back on. But then the above tips are very legit, at worst it won't turn on again, but if you're lucky everything could be alright except for your camera which most probably has been short circuited. Did you try to turn it on since it fell in the water?
As for my galaxy nexus which was in my pocket when I fell into a pond full of fish at a hotel, it was fortunately not salt water, survived with my camera short circuited and I think part of my board as well as it became slower but then its still works. It was completely drenched as well.
Well its none of my business, how come yours fell into water? My dad's nexus 4 fell down and the screen was completely shattered :'( we are unfortunate with nexus phones here, phones only as my nexus 10 never had any problems since purchased xD
All the luck be with you

[Q] Back glass completely broken - but it has not falled :| - warranty?

Hi guys.
This morning I woke up as every other morning and did my breakfast on a glass table.
I always gently put the N4 on the glass table, with the bottom speaker just slightly out of the table's surface for being able to hear its sounds...I'm sure you know what I mean!
Fact is that this simple, standard and fair operation completely broke the back glass of the phone. I didn't even understand at first what all that creaky sounds were...then I felt like much dust was under the phone, but it was its back in millions of little parts. I posted a photo on G+ here https://plus.google.com/u/0/104235829819528805196/posts/dgbDjvAtGjM
Now...as I ask there...do you think warranty will cover this? It's a big hassle because I live in Italy and I bought it in an online shop in Germany with a re-shipment from there just because, as you know, the device wasn't much available elsewhere back in January (it's not available here in Italy even today). Do you think I take a risk if I send it back, like the device coming to LG and they refusing to repair it, so I just burnt lot of money of shipments and repair service for no reason? I see I could buy a replacement back for around 60 EUR but I will void the warranty opening it...and seeing how fragile it is....who knows what happens in the next 19 months....
In short, I need some advice
I'm not sure about warranty in Europe, so I'm not going to touch on that, however that break was caused by rapid temperature change, like if you run hot water on an iced over windshield on your car

This makes sense. The glass table is particularly cold at the touch, and thick. Even if I could also note that the phone was previously just in my bedroom at ambient temperature and no sun was on it, so, well, if the back of the phone was made of -some- part of simil-glass too, it was somehow cold too!
If you look close, the pattern comes from the camera, which doesn't sit flush, my guess is heat off the battery "vents" there, it was warm there, touched cold glass, and shattered

That looks pretty cool. I would give google a call, but if anything you can always hide it with a skin.

Thinking more about it, I remember I had just detached the phone from charge. But something weird happened! When I woke up, and the phone was still under charge from the night, I noticed the battery was still at 99% and charging, after 7/9 hours!!! I just let it complete the charge to 100% before detaching it. It could be it was particularly how and I did not notice it....
won't lie, that is by far the prettiest cracked back i've ever seen for a n4. hahaha
@ErgMeglio Well, you weren't dancing on it, so I'd say Google and/or LG would cover it with an International Warranty. I'm no lawyer, and bought mine through Google Play ... So I'd simply go back to them for a repair.

I've sent it under warranty after so many headaches with the shop.
Now I am awaiting for their investigation to know if they are going to cover it as they should.. imho...
