Galaxy S4 Recovery mode not working - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So, first, I'm running the stock 4.2.2 rooted on the ATT SGH-I337.
I installed ROM manager shortly after the root, and recently downloaded CM 10.1.3 for the att model of my phone. However, I couldn't find it in the recovery system to flash it. So, I install goomanager and flash over to TWRP, thinking maybe TWRP's easier interface will help me to find it. I reboot into recovery, and if I attempt to enter recovery mode, it gets stuck on the "Downlaoding, do not turn off target" screen. So, I re-flash CWM back on it, and reboot to recovery, and get stuck on that same screen again. If I just boot it, it's fine, jumps right back into 4.2.2 TouchWiz rooted. However, as you probably know, I can't install a ROM without recovery mode, and stock TouchWiz is poo.
I'd like to get CM running asap, although I'm just glad my phone still RUNS for now (my experience installing CM on my S3 was a NIGHTMARE).
So yea, any reason I would be getting stuck on that screen and unable to enter recovery? Like I said, I'd like to have CM as soon as I can.
Also, if someone can link me to a guide to install through CWM w\o needing a computer, that'd be wonderful. Thanks!

I'm assuming you're running on the MF3 build version. Read up before you brick your device. Your only option for a custom recovery is safestrap. Come on people.
Cheers.

Well that sucks. Bit wait. Why was I able to boot into cwm At least 5 times before I flashed TWRP. And several people on YouTube are using TWRP on my same model.

You never saw twrp. You saw the stock recovery. Mf3 won't allow a custom recovery.
Edit, you did see an i337 in the you tube vids, but it had mdl or mdb firmware. You can put a custom recovery on with them. Unfortunately it's not possible to downgrade the firmware.

And also, I did, in fact, read past rooting, and found several people running CWM and TWRP fine, so I figured it would work. Now maybe they didn't have MF3,and I wasn't paying extremely close attention, but I'm pretty sure there were some on the same model and firmware as I am.

So, at this point, it's a waiting game for someone to find out how to put a recovery mode on an MF3 firmware, is what you're telling me?
Also, I may have been in stock. I don't remember EXACTLY what clockwork looked like. I just know it wouldn't let me select the gapps and CM files, which is why I tried TWRP. Though I did have CWM recovery flashed when I booted it into recovery those several times.

Dude you never booted CWM. That was MF3s stock recovery. MF3 does not allow any custom recovery but Safestrap.

[Q] Cant Boot Into Recovery Mode

I have been trying to get into Recovery Mode for a couple of weeks now. After reading and trying many things I finally decided to ask for help. If you have any suggestions it would be GREATLY appreciated!
Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T Rooted (checked with Root Checker and also runs Titanium Backup completely)
Rooted using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577
When I power off the phone and then hold power, volume up, and home. When vibrate I let loose of power and continue to hold volume up and home. Then I get the screen "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!
Also says:
"Could not do normal boot"
"ODIN MODE"
"PRODUCT NAME: SGI-1337"
"CURRENT Binary Samsung Official"
"SYSTEM STATUS: Official"
"CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0X30"
'WRITE PROTECTION: Enable"
Rom Manager says: "RECOVERY ALREADY INSTALLED: ClockworkMod Recovery and Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
When I try to use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery I get the same downloading screen.
Why I am trying to do this: I would like to install Cyanogenmod 11 if possible.
Again any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

When i do that I get: "Warning!!! A custom OS can cause critical problems in your phone and installed applications. Installing Custom OS on your device may cause it to shut down as a result. Please see manual for details. If you want to download a custom OS press the volume up key. Otherwise press the volume down key to cancel. Volume up: Continue Volume down: Cancel (restart phone)"
When I click volume up it takes me to the downloading screen same as before.
THANKS for trying, but that doesnt appear to the answer.

Pics from Root Checker and Rom Manager if it helps.

You cannot run custom recovery on att mk3,only safestrap. Sounds like you toasted your recovery. Youll need to find some guides to flash back the stock recovery with odin, maybe another method. Lots of guides here for this sort of thing.

Download goomanager from the app store. There's an option there that allows you to reboot into recovery from the app. That's the only way that works for me, maybe you should try that.

Yes download the mf3 tar files. Use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372414 and you should be back to stock than you should be able to go back into recovery. If that doesn't work than you have incomplete flashes somewhere. Look for the mj6-mj9 update and find the post on how to fix it. You'll have to download some emergency files. But I think you can just Odin with the mf3 tar files.

Can't flash twrp with the new OTA update. You will have to flash back to the firmware 80010d. Hopefully the dev's figure it out soon.
Questions should be in Q&A, but, try this suggestion..

I also took the OTA from stock and ended up in the same boat w/o being able to flash a custom recovery.
I just reverted to stock and installed TWRP, after a lot of useless troubleshooting and wasted time.
I intended to use stock OS, but, I couldn't help myself and installed Aeon V3 rom for AT&T, you really must try it, it is SO choice.
Of course you must flash back to stock and TWRP/CWM yourself b4 installing Aeon v3 should you choose.
How did you go back to stock? Before the OTA? Mind to enlighten this lad.

Rooted, not updated in quite a while, what not?

So, I am still running MF9. I am rooted, and sporting a custom rom, albeit a fairly old one: Sacs_Custom 4.X with the included kernal. I want to flash a newer rom, especially since new bugs are starting to crop up. I know that newer ones are on MJA (right?) and are based on 4.3 or 4.4. So, assuming I have selected my Rom, can I simply factory reset and then flash the new rom? Or do I need to take factory updates after reset, then re-root the device to flash these newer roms?
Go get the MK2 modem without the bootloader from development section. Odin it and flash whatever ROM your heart desires

[Q] Bricked i337 -- URGENT

Hi everyone,
I am new to android mods and such and I may very well sound like an idiot. However, even though I know little to nothing of what I am talking about I am in dire need of help. I never did any heavy modifications like custom ROMS but I merely rooted it and installed some tweaks via the xda installer. After toying around with one of the tweaks I seemed to cause an annoying random reboot which would happen when I would sometimes go to unlock my phone. Fine, I could deal with a few reboots here and there. However, my phone recently got stuck on the AT&T loading emblem and stood in my pocket for 2 hours draining a lot of battery and has not been resolved since. I am unable to enter safe mode and I tried a few guides to flash it to stock but I honestly have NO IDEA what I am doing. I am aimlessly following guides here but there is so much variability therefore I feel as if I would have the most success with personalized help.
What do I do? Please use simplified terms along with (relatively) full steps. For example, if I were to flash something I would go into recovery mode with home + vol up button factory reset, and the AT&T logo would still be there, frozen.
Things I have tried but have probably done wrong:
Factory reset
Install custom ROM
All and ANY help is appreciated at this point, I am desperate.
Thank you,
Suprr
Also, my ultimate goal is to install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520418 this mod, or at the very least get the stock ROM working so my phone is usable.

I am assuming that you havent yet taken the OTA update to NB1 and your base is MK2. Or, do you have a MDB/MDL bootloader?
If MK2: You have to flash the full stock Mk2 firmware using odin. Download the "Full odin tar files" from the All things ATT thread
if MDB/MDL: Download the stock firmware from sammobile and flash using Odin.

He must have determined you are not on mdl/mdl firmware. Those firmwares would allow you to easily flash custom roms, nb1 is not as easy and limited to touch wiz based roms. Do you know if you had a custom recovery, twrp or cwm?

To be frank, I have not a clue of what any of those are.

Alright, then the link you posted to the nb1 firmware should be ok for you to flash in Odin

I am flashing it right now. Let's hope it works.
EDIT:
Flashed the full tar version for mk2 to no avail via Odin
Flashing the MK2 full tar file from here in Odin 1.85 says it was successful (green box) and when I went to restart the phone it was still stuck on the AT&T logo.
I flashed from this thread and this line:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700726
To return to factory stock MK2 flash the I337_MK2_Full_Odin tar

Boot into recovery and do a factory reset. That should get you past the bootloop
Ps, the first boot is going to take longer than normal. Give it a good 10 minutes

You're on mk2 firmware now. You'll need to root it using safe root and then put safestrap on in order to flash that rom. Look in the general forum for index, all thing mk2 and nb1. There's a lot of info there so read it carefully

[Q] can't flash recovery

OK. I'm trying to install cyanogen mod on my at&t gs4. I am new to root, obviously. I've been watching wwjoshdew do a 30 minute install video that seems to go really in depth but my problem lies with the custom recovery I installed, PhilZ. I installed extracted it and tried doing a manual recovery. I got the message software found on your system has not been authorized by at&t or something similar to that. I took out my battery and booted up into download mode and hit start device normally or whatever it says exactly. Then I tried using a flasher from the play store and same thing. I would like a fix to this (without Odin if possible). I am afraid to continue without help to avoid bricking my phone.
Thank you.
Hopefully I don't sound too stupid
Do you know what firmware version you're on? Most likely it's a newer version which does not support a custom recovery other than safestrap. And m most likely you will need Odin

I thought so. And you've learned, you can not flash a custom recovery on your phone. You'll need to flash this in Odin to get your phone running again
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149
Then look in the general forum for all things att..... (edit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758227) read that. Safestrap is the only recovery you can use on that firmware version
