So, it was an unfortunate day for me. My Note 2 (GT-N7100) slipped from my hand from a height of just 1.5 feet (approx.). I had a flip cover installed. As I was walking, I as holding the device chest-high (i'm 5'10"). That was the height when the phone slipped form my hand. reacting in milliseconds, I tried to get hold of my beloved Note2 and even caught the flap of the flip cover. But, to my bad luck, the locks of the flip opened, and the phone fell on concrete face down from a height of about 1.5 feet. I thought everything is fine, but as soon as I turned the device to see the display, I felt like hell. When I checked the device, I got to know that it was the front glass that was damaged, but the touch and everything was working just perfect.
Now, the guys at Samsung service center told me that whole touch will be replaced, and it will cost me INR 7000. On a little Googling, I came to know that the front glass can be changed manually, but after watching a YouTube video, i knew that I'm not going to follow that procedure myself. So, I've decided to get it done at the Samsung service. Cant imagine a single day without these kind of devices. I'll get the job done soon...

From the picture we can see where the bottom corner hit first.
Sucks but that's what's going to happen if you get a good corner impact.
Doesn't mean that GG is easily broken. Just means you had a spell of bad luck.

Not just Gorilla Glass.. 90% of the time any phone, with whatever type of glass will break from that type of drop.
Maybe with the arrival of the flexible displays, will finally see phones able to survive a drop..

The display is pasted with gum onto the glass. Both will have to be replaced, sorry about that.

That's unfortunate. Many cases of gorilla glass on note 2 and s3 getting shattered. I use silicon cover which protects the corners. Flip covers offer no protection.

Sorry to hear that mate.
I've never liked those flip cases as I've always thought they leave the phone pretty exposed. Maybe look into a normal type silicon (thin case) and perhaps a tempered glass screen protector.
Thankfully I've not dropped it to find out, but I've heard good things about a thin case + tempered glass screen protector if you don't want a super big protectivr case on it.

So sorry for you, all my friends have cracked displays, thank god i don't..
It's also so random, a friend dropped his phone (LG O2X) from about 30 cm's and it broke..
I threw my phone (LG O2X) against a wall multiple times, and i smacked in on the floor a few times, and it did not break...

Ya. I knew my luck was really bad

note 2 doesn't have GG2 anyways. i feel for you tho', broke my one x some time ago in the same way..
Wysłane z mojego GT-N7100

That's hard luck. My Note 2 has fallen from waist height face down onto bathroom tile but survived with no scratches and cracks, but a very very minute chip to the bottom left of the phone. Maybe I got REALLY lucky.
I think beyond a certain height, the phone cannot take a fall. Also, I refrain from using the flip cover because it makes one handed usage very hard ( and the causes of such falls to be honest ).

Silicon covers offer far better protection than flip covers, I've dropped mine several times now and don't have dents or scratches! Just 2 sharp dents on my screen protector:good:

Breaking news! Another person dropped a glass touchscreen phone on the CONCRETE and the GLASS cracked! ! ! Who would have thought.
It's called gorilla GLASS, not gorilla DIAMOND! ! ! !
Ok, on serious note... Sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

I've cracked my screen to.... local Samsung service center told me that they can replace only glass if touchscreen is working and only for 120$ instead of 250$ for whole touchscreen

Thats what I use for Note2 protection..silicon cases offers best protection compared to flip covers..flip cover only protects display but screen guard is good alternative.it doesn't protects the border anyways.
Silicon covers protects the phone from every kind of damage..here's pic of my silicon cover

gorilla glass scratches ??? YES!

Well i stratched mine ... actually my wife did. She picked a few shells from the beatch thru them in the bag where my phone was. Next thing that damn screen had scratches on it
Next day went and bought creen protector. I hate that because even if the screen is unbreakable, you can scratch it.
I do think that in normal use, that won;t happen but you you have a wife that loves sand ... and shells ... take care and good luck. I believe that sand will scratch that screen.
I would kill my wife
Gorilla glass is not unscratchable or unbreakable. Its advertised as stronger and less likely to scratch, but how much more stronger and scratch durable? My dell streak's gorilla glass shattered from a 3 foot faceplant. Granted it has a bigger surface area, it still shouldn't have shattered.
I never remove the factory screen cover until I have a skinomi or other type of protector ready to install.

There's also been three reported screen fractures. Two from falls, one from sitting on it. So it's definitely not unbreakable. I've got a Zagg Invisible Shield full body suit on mine. As far as encasing your phone in vinyl goes, it looks pretty good. It's dead if I drop it but at least it will die pretty.
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield...es-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php
I stopped using screen protectors when I got a DHD and never had any scratches on it, nor have I on my SGS2. That said, I treat the phone like it's my baby! I suppose accidents can happen to anyone though.
Regards.
Having a screen protector will actually reduce chances of a glass shatter tremendously cause of the fact that the adhesive quality of any screen protector keeps the glass together making it less prone of shattering.
As far as scratches go, gorilla glass is definitely more resistant to scratches, but it never hurts to put a scratchguard on it, does it!

I'm interested to know how that full body suit works. Surely with the back not being a flat surface you can't put a protector on it like a screen? Also, does it protect the edges?
Check the accessories thread on screen protectors, the invisible shield sucks on the sgs2.

Most light scratches are usually the coating on top of screen not the actual glass.

It might have been the sand and not the shells.

Well, reading the posts in the accessories thread was 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Bottom line is people are looking for different things. I love those with a $700 phone buying $5 crap off of eBay. Anyway. I was looking for something to protect the phone, not just the screen. Here are some pics of my phone wearing the Zagg's. No protector is totally invisible. You can make up your own mind.

it is not the glass itself that scratches but the coating on top of the glass... I have the same scratch. If i clean the screen with a microfiber cloth i cannot see any thing but when i run my fingernail on top of it i feel uneven surface.
And if my finger is oily THEN i can see the scratch.
Guys.. this is absolutely annoying. I dont see it but i know that it is there and it is driving me mad
I already ordered my zagg screen protector. hopefully i will have it in a few days and ill forget about the whole thing

Broke my Screen Glass

Sonofa B. I just got a grippy case for my Nexus, since they're so slick and difficult to hold.
Installed it last night and managed to drop my phone on the floor this morning... Broke the damn glass. There is a crack from the upper left corner to the middle of the right side.
Phone is still functional, but I'm still quite pissed. I drop my phone very rarely and I just got this a month ago to replace my crapped-out Evo.
: (
That's no good. I did the same a few months back.. I bought a used digitizer/lcd/housing combo for a NS4G on eBay for $60 and swapped it. It was very easy.
Uh I haven't seen any broken glass Nexus S. Could you post a photo of it ?

Just a small crack. Perhaps it can be held together by a screen protector.
I'm happy with no case ^^
Ouch...how could you manage it? Im wearing it lose in my pocket and it hasent even got a scratch yet o0
Slipped out of my hand and hit the hard, tiled floor.
Sorry mate, that sucks. The very day after you got the grippy case...
Same happens to me only 3 months old. Can't deal with broken screen. Had to get a one from insurance. I feel your pain.

My nexus fell on tiled floor 3 times and nothing happened to it
Now that I think of it, the case I put on the phone was likely the true root cause of the cracking.
I had to squeeze the phone quite hard to get the case around the phone. That may have stressed the glass enough to cause it to crack after a gentle fall.
Effin cheap POS ebay case... Wish there was an Otterbox Commuter for this phone.
I'm in the same boat...Sprint NS4G...I have only had it for a month. Samsung wants 160.00 with a 3 week turnaround...Ugh...
I checked ebay, but I could not find any listings for the NS4G, only i9023.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Screen-Display-Bildschirm-Touch-Digitizer-Samsung-Nexus-S-i9023-WZ-/230686551324?pt=Handy_Zubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item35b5fd6d1c#ht_483wt_1174
Does anyone know if the i9023 screen will work on the NS4G?
Keep us posted joelee. I've been too lazy to look for a screen replacement.
I just put on the screen protector that came with the case, in order to keep the glass together. Working well so far, but this matte anti-glare protector is cheap, rough, and makes my display look like ****. The matte cover I had for my Evo was much nicer.
On a side note, I haven't had very good luck with phones this year. Bought the refurb eBay Evo 4G in early March and the display and cpu temp sensor crapped out by September. Got this eBay Nexus to replace it, then I broke the screen!
Have you looked into a cell phone repair place? We have a place called Dr. Cell Phone here in Dallas. They were about 33% less than HTC and no shipping for my wife's Nexus 1 screen. It was done on the same day too.
Look up the trident case its par with otterbox I think except I pulled the protective screen covr out. Been using it for a while.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Trident cases are so bulky and ugly. I'm usually not so rough with my phones that I need a heavy duty case (my suspicion is that my case was what actually broke my glass). I'd rather retain the sleek, slim feel of the phone than double its size with a suit of armor.
Too bad there's not an Otterbox Commuter for the nexus - that case was perfect for my Evo.
Non- gorilla glass ;/
I have somewhat the same issue... my screen is cracked but everything is functional. i want to replace the glass... but do i have to replace the digitizer as well? i saw some glass for sale on ebay for 25 dollars
anyone just change the glass or you have to change everything from glass and digitizer and lcd?

I had the same issue. My screen was cracked but everything was functional. So I just went to Samsung repairs and fixed it for free(it's because my friend works at Samsung). You would probably need to pay somewhat expensive price for it.

I've dropped my NS close to 50 times and have only gotten dings and a small crack on the battery cover near the headphones hole.
I dropped my GN once, from 2 feet off the ground while uh using the bathroom, and it cracked the screen. Probably just bad luck.

[Q] How prone is Gorilla Glass to cracking?

I've dropped my Evo 4g many many times over the 2+ years I've owned it and besides a few small scratches, never had any issues. Should I expect the same of the Gorilla Glass 2 in the N4 or would getting insurance for the phone be worthwhile?
I was fine without insurance on my last phone, but not sure if there are other factors that would affect the chance of cracking (shape, weight, angle of hit ect...).
It won't
Used to drop my defy like a hundred times.
Got no pouch or screencover and kept it in my trouser pocket fir two years not the slightest scratch.
Gorilla glass ownz

Gorilla glass 2 is the strongest glass on any smartphone right now but that doesn't mean it won't break. Im more worried about the glass not protected by the bezel. Looking at the pics of this phone the glass on the front goes right to the edge and not protected by the bezel at all. And to make it worst the edges curve up so if you drop this phone it will be more likely to land on the glass. The weakest part of any piece of glass is the edge so I'm a bit worried about this since i don't want to use a case on a phone this nice.
Glass is glass and it will break. I literally never drop phones, so it shouldn't be a problem for me, but if you are prone to dropping phones, don't be surprised if the glass does break or crack.
It seems like the glass on the back is prone to cracking/breaking though. Kellex from droid life cracked the back of his LG Optimus G review unit and apparently he didn't even drop it.
I just finished watching the Vergecast, and Josh Topolsky dropped his Nexus 4 review unit from a coffee table onto hardwood and it cracked the back.
You have been warned. lol

Here's a link to the AT&T review. If you don't want to read the entire thing, just scroll down a bit and you'll see pictures of the cracked back. Like i said in my op, Kellex didn't even drop the phone and the back cracked. As you can see in the pics, the back of the AT&T unit is almost identical to the Nexus 4
The link to the Vergecast is here. If you want to get to the part where he talks about cracking his Nexus 4, just fast forward to around 48:00.
If this is a common problem, this might make me hold off on buying one of these.

Only glass I've had crack is the glass on my playbook, when my 2 year old threw it. My galaxy tab is awesome, and the sensation gorilla glass with the curved edges has had no problems.
I do worry that the flat back would be more prone to breakage than the curved front.

How easily does Nexus 4 back glass break?

I'm thinking about buying a Nexus 4, but the only thing that's stopping me is that people say how easily the back glass breaks.
If you could provide any real life experiences, on how easily the back glass broke or it didn't, perhaps with or without the protection case.
I would really appreciate it!
Cheers!
Mine broke after two weeks, but if you get a crack it doesn't spread easily. Have some more cracks now after 4 months use, it's not the best design choice. Still, it's a ridiculously good buy and you can always change the back plate easily!

Did you use protection case? From what height did it fell?
I don't really think it fell, it just broke from pressure in my pocket. Probably had it mixed together with keys etc.
The important thing is, the screen doesn't get scratched at all, no matter how much abuse it gets. I bought an original bumper for it, but I found it to be unwieldy because it's already a big phone, so I don't really use it.

My nexus 4 don´t have any scratch, i used this for 2 months naked and the back only protected for the plastic coming from the box.
Don't sit in your phone, don't drop your phone and all be fine.
The back is normal glass, you need protect this.
If the back does start to crack, this skin might help out.
This is a phone you can't really carry naked unless u are extra careful. I wouldn't recommend it. At least get a bumper.

I seriously recommend buying an N4 right now. Lowest price it's ever been at.
You guys made me want N4 even more, and of course its out of stock.
They have no idea when they might get new units. Ah well...
I have the N4 for a couple of months now and the first 2 weeks i carried it naked, but i,ve been extra carefull with it...
After the 2 weeks i got 2 cases and 1 puch(i am currently using the pouch) and since last month i noticed a couple of tiny scratches on the back near the camera(u cand only see them in a certain angle) and 2 scratches on the front(same here, u can see them if u look carefull...)
But i have no ideea how i've managed to scratched it since i have had verry good care of the phone even with the cases....

Put a dbrand sticker on it, it won't break that easily, or at least it won't show it.
Haven't broken the glass yet, the First 2 months I had the phone it was unprotected. In that time I had 1 scratch under the nexus logo and a few on the Gorilla Glass 2 front panel. After putting a case and a screen protector on it, I dropped the phone (accidently) around 4 times in the last few months
1st time was around the end of June.
I dropped the phone on a surface like this:

I dropped it from my hand around 3 feet above the surface.
It landed straight on the front. It had a Ringke Fusion Case and a screen protector installed.
There was no damage at all.
2nd Time I clearly remember I was shining in someones eye with the flash light (most of you probably know how bright it is),
her natural reaction was to hit the phone and it slid around 10 feet away, it still had the same case on.
The phone tossed a few times on the surface back and forth
No Damage.
I was really impressed.
I luckily never dropped it without a case.
I have no idea how the phone holds without a case.
I suggets putting at least a screen protector on it, because you will get scratches.
Not from keys or metal, but from sand. Also the back will get scratches as well if you don't protect it (Even faster as it isn't gorilla glass).

Case or Raw Dog?

Simple question. Do you rock a case on the Note 3, or are you running it raw dog style?
I've now tried two cases, the Spigen Neo Hybrid and the UAG. Didnt like the Spigen at all. Love the storm trooper look of the UAG but that thing is nearly impossible to remove and it doubles the thickness of the phone. Plus, as a huge fan of the appearance of the Note3, I'm not sure I'd really like any case at all.
Thinking of throwing a tempered glass protector on the screen and calling it good.
I run it naked.
I love the look too, but not the feel. The leather appearance of the back looks great but gives very little grip. I have an otterbox defender and that same old patterned belt clip/holster that Verizon has been selling for years with their smartphones. I almost bought that spigen s-view case until I saw pictures of how it cracked one user's screen. I don't really like cases on my phone either but i'm not brave enough to go without a case. Samsung phones have been known to be kinda fragile.

It slips over the top and bottom, rather than back/front. So it will not pop off when you drop it.
And it has a kickstand on the back!

Case. Don't remember who makes it, but it's sturdy.

That's a Platinum brand case... sold at Best Buy. They are expensive... The markup is over 90%...employees pay sub $5

Yeah, I think I paid $30-ish for it. Had one for my last phone, an S3. Dropped it 3 stories off a balcony onto a sidewalk. There was a decent dash on the case, but no phone damage. Definitely worth it.

I love running the Note 3 naked. The only issue is that the back gets slippery at times. I had my first drop today ?. I like my Spigen case, but it's difficult to plug headphones in sometimes.

I run it naked as well. I'm actually more worried about scratching the display since I haven't dropped a phone in many years (knock on wood!). I've been contemplating getting the S view cover since it doesn't add to the thickness at all, but I use the phone so much it would be such a hassle to keep having to open it (and hold it open while using it).
I'm insanely ocd about the display because it somehow got scratched on my last phone (gnex) like a month after I bought it, just by putting it display side down on a table. It bothered the hell out of me for the following 23 months straight. Scratch resistant my ass.
I've tried a few glass screen protectors but they eventually peel away at the edges and it looks horrible. Suffice to say I'll never put ANY phone display side down again, and I always have a death grip on it when I'm using it...so I'm good to go.
Poetic Borderline bumper case because it's just enough protection without getting in the way. And it fits the slightly thicker Samsung wireless charging cover.

Spigen Glas-Tr slim to protect the screen and depending on my mood either a TPU or metal bumper. The back is like $10 to replace if it ever gets scratched up so I don't bother putting anything on the back except for a FlyGrip to help me one-hand the phone. I did order a white back so I go back and forth between them - the white back looks cool w a metal bumper.

That phone is why I won't buy anything without gorilla glass again. It got scratched on something in my pocket. Except there wasn't anything in my pocket.

I always thought the gnex had gorilla glass...??? That's why I'm so paranoid about this phone. I know it's obviously a much newer technology as far as the glass, but I'm paranoid nonetheless.
I would love to see a legitimate scratch test done. I could only find one test done and it was with a knife, and wasn't really that clear. When the hell would I ever scratch the display with a knife?!?
They need to do some common sense, real world testing...i.e. putting the phone in and out of jean pockets with the metal rivets on them, and with keys and other objects in the pocket. Also placing it display side down on different surfaces and moving it around, etc.
