Screen brightness-throttling.... - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
Something that's really annoying me is my phone still changes the display brightness level with everything turned off/manual
No power saving mod
Manual brightness
Screen mod standard
Stock browser is on manual
WTF is going on. Surely others have experienced this?
How do we turn it off

If your note 3 gets too hot it will reduce the screen brightness.....

Display Settings
Automatic contrast off!

I have never seen this on any other device
It happens only 10min into use with just general browsing

Automatic contrast is already off

So is everyone happy that this is happening?
I cant believe no one else is bothered by it!!

It was bothering me A LOT but now something worse took over, the phone keeps rebooting and I've had to reset and start all over again and it's still happening. So the dimming is annoying but not nearly as annoying as not being able to use the phone at all!

I wrote about this throttling a few times here during the last days, search for my recent posts! in short: this throttling also happens when all auto brightness functions are turned off, and even if you manually set the lowest brightness! it depends on CPU load, thermal envelope and/or power-draw! I personally find it very annoying, especially because it happens also on lowest levels...

Voodoo causing screen to go bonkers!

I installed voodoo to work with cm9 and noticed that two things happened over time each day. the screen would start having lines scanning down from top to bottom like a refresh rate and the screen itself would get very very hot. I uninstalled voodoo and this issue went away. has anyone else experienced this? did I have the gamma hack values to high where i was doing more harm than good?
Your rgb values were to high. Could also be the high gamma values as well lower Gama is better.

YRMV but my screen only works well set a little higher than the "alternate" settings. Some screens work a little different than others. I had to play with the Voodoo setting and explore different brightness settings before I found a good balance.

Am I glad you started this thread! Over the weekend I went on a water ride and my phone got wet. Immediately after I experienced the very same thing with the scanning lines. I assumed it was due to water damage. Strangest thing though, it would only happen when I used the browser and or the email. All other screens were fine. I was just getting ready to pay up under the TEP and get my phone replaced. Removing Voodoo Color solved my problem! Thanks!

but for some reason the standby doesnt work at all.. i have it set to turn off the screen after 30 secs of idle and it does not work.
anyone else having this issue?
mine works fine. see what apps have been installed. maybe some app requires not to go in standby and prevents the screen to go off

Have similar problem - screen do not off completely. Does not mateer what time I chose, does not matter if smart stay is on or off. I do not have it's icon visible in the status bar whet it is off. Anyway screen is always on. Any help?
Same problem here. The phone just dims its screen but it never shuts it off.
This is quite annoying when the phone lights up to show the low batt warning and just drains all its remaining energy. Perfect.

Try disabling all smart stay options (smart pause could still be on).

Seems that I found the reason. But still do not have permanent solution. After restart screen went off without problem. After running some application it became constantly on again. When I closed some applications (long press home button and swipe open applications) screen also turned off normally. So probably some application makes such a problem. Have to check which one.

Screen power saving mode?

Can anyone explain to me what happens when screen power saving mode is enabled in settings so far I always keep it enabled and all it seems to do is dim the display a bit and increase the battery life massively. Can anyone tell me if it's doing anything like slowing down my phone slightly with animations or something cause I don't want to be missing out, but so far that's all I can see.

it seems to dim my display quite a bit.. :/
I ended up disabling it.
If you click on power saving mode in settings it should show what you want and give you further options. It's that way on the Note 2.

Ive only checked this option in my power saving settings. Ive turned off power saving for both cpu and haptic feedback. Ive noticed it only dims the display a bit. Is there anything else that this setting does?
Looks to me like it lowers the Gamma value of the screen.
You can just as easily set the brightness to 80% yourself... Same effect
I've read somewhere when i was using note 2 that the cpu is reduce to two core only. I dont know is it true or not.

I turned it on and off with brightness at 90% and there was no difference between the two. So it just lowers the maximum brightness by about 10%.

That's the CPU setting in the power saving menu. We're talking about the screen mode setting.

Trick I use to save battery

I know some people won't want to do this, but it's something I do that I personally find helps with battery life. Nothing revolutionary, and some people won't want to but... different strokes for different folks. It's very tempting with this beautiful screen of ours to blast the brightness and get the most out of the Super AMOLED (or whatever they're calling it these days) but I've found if I'm in the same environment reading/watching videos/whatever to turn the brightness ALL the way down. Struggle with that for a few minutes while your eyes try to adjust, then turning the brightness up just a tiny bit will be (or at least seem) plenty bright. Anyway, combining that along with having rooted with Scott's CleanROM (I'm on Verizon) and my battery life has been golden! [emoji2]
Here's a screenshot of where I'll often have my brightness after doing this.

Seems really low, but I have no problem reading or doing anything at this brightness, unless I'm out in direct sunlight or something. Anyway, just my .02

This is not a trick.
Suggestion then
I use the slider on the left to turn down the brightness in mxplayer which is my de facto movie watching app.... Turn it to 15 in bright day time environments and down to 5 indoors or in dark scenarios. Otherwise the system wide default is +5 on the notification slider and auto. Able to cross 5.5 SOT easily with this much.
I have a trick to open the phone. I use the power button on the side or the home button on the front of the phone.

I've been wondering how to open the phone, thanks!
You should try out adaway! It's much more powerful than adblockplus, it actually modifies the host file. Also, try out lux if you haven't. It's seriously my favorite and most essential app. I don't know how I survived without it all these years.

Battery Life Discussion Here

Should I claim the warranty

I've had my ups and downs with this phone, but today is where I might draw the line. After factory resetting this phone twice, the battery life has been awful, and today this phone got up to 106° F with the lowest brightness and only with WiFi on while browsing XDA on Chrome. I need to know if I should make good on that 2 year warranty, or if there is something that can be done about this.

Start with a factory reset. You obviously have something running the background consuming cpu.
I already have. Twice. It's a shame that this phone has no reliable way to monitor that, even with GSAM battery monitor.
Try better battery stats.
Alright

Food for thought - if you can't find an app that is making your CPU run nonstop then it has to be a problem with your firmware. Have you tried downloading the factory B20 from the ZTE website?
I tried a lot of things, including that update, but once I installed that firmware, I realized that CM 13 is stable for this phone now, so I went the extra steps and installed that on my phone. Thanks for the suggestions though.
