I know some people won't want to do this, but it's something I do that I personally find helps with battery life. Nothing revolutionary, and some people won't want to but... different strokes for different folks. It's very tempting with this beautiful screen of ours to blast the brightness and get the most out of the Super AMOLED (or whatever they're calling it these days) but I've found if I'm in the same environment reading/watching videos/whatever to turn the brightness ALL the way down. Struggle with that for a few minutes while your eyes try to adjust, then turning the brightness up just a tiny bit will be (or at least seem) plenty bright. Anyway, combining that along with having rooted with Scott's CleanROM (I'm on Verizon) and my battery life has been golden! [emoji2]
Here's a screenshot of where I'll often have my brightness after doing this.

Seems really low, but I have no problem reading or doing anything at this brightness, unless I'm out in direct sunlight or something. Anyway, just my .02

This is not a trick.
Suggestion then
I use the slider on the left to turn down the brightness in mxplayer which is my de facto movie watching app.... Turn it to 15 in bright day time environments and down to 5 indoors or in dark scenarios. Otherwise the system wide default is +5 on the notification slider and auto. Able to cross 5.5 SOT easily with this much.
I have a trick to open the phone. I use the power button on the side or the home button on the front of the phone.

I've been wondering how to open the phone, thanks!
You should try out adaway! It's much more powerful than adblockplus, it actually modifies the host file. Also, try out lux if you haven't. It's seriously my favorite and most essential app. I don't know how I survived without it all these years.

As per the title, does the screen brightness 'Auto' setting and the light sensor actually do anything? Seems to make no difference on mine....

Hi,
yes it did, but I switched it off, cause it was too nervous. Brightness changed all the time when lonely clouds were passing, or the the cloudy thumb cast a shadow.
S.
Yes it works!:
Use Shagctrl to lower brightness and then switch it on. The brightness level you chose will be the minimum level.
If you cover the sensor in the top right-hand corner, the screen will dimm. When you aim you flashlight on it, it will brighten.
(at least... mine does...)
However, I don't use it, because my hand will frequently get in the way when I use the touchscreen and then my screen brightens suddenly... Verry anoying.

Hi,
this is a different question, but I didn't want to open another thread.
Who can confirm this?
Vista is running in the "background". Your are in WM, but have shut-down WM. So dark screen. But then exactly when Vista goes into standby (green light starts to blink) the WM screen comes to live.
Is that strange? Or just always the case?
Thanks!
S.

Hi Pantaloonie,
this looks like capital punishment for me, so sorry! Next question from several feet under.
Let me explain:
I am rather a newbie using forums like this, means the does and do nots are not always clear. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
My thoughts were 1. the point was answered and 2. there are so many items on the site that it is not necessary to always start a new thread for every minor problem.
Wrong thinking?
Please, I really do not know, can you clarify? Do you really start a new thread for everything?
Thanks!
S.
Heh, I was just having a bit of fun, you did nothing wrong. Some forums can be very strict about keeping threads on topic, but we are pretty relaxed here.
The advantage of starting a new thread is that more people will see it, you're more likely to get an answer.
Hey guys
Something that's really annoying me is my phone still changes the display brightness level with everything turned off/manual
No power saving mod
Manual brightness
Screen mod standard
Stock browser is on manual
WTF is going on. Surely others have experienced this?
How do we turn it off
If your note 3 gets too hot it will reduce the screen brightness.....
Display Settings
Automatic contrast off!

I have never seen this on any other device
It happens only 10min into use with just general browsing
Automatic contrast is already off
So is everyone happy that this is happening?
I cant believe no one else is bothered by it!!

It was bothering me A LOT but now something worse took over, the phone keeps rebooting and I've had to reset and start all over again and it's still happening. So the dimming is annoying but not nearly as annoying as not being able to use the phone at all!
I wrote about this throttling a few times here during the last days, search for my recent posts! in short: this throttling also happens when all auto brightness functions are turned off, and even if you manually set the lowest brightness! it depends on CPU load, thermal envelope and/or power-draw! I personally find it very annoying, especially because it happens also on lowest levels...

As reported in some Nexus 5 reviews as well as on the Moves google play page reviews, the Moves app that comes on our phones seems to use quite a bit of battery. If you installed it, you can take a look on your own phone by pulling down settings and clicking on the battery icon.
Yes, I know they talk about how it uses much less power than other ways of tracking movement, but it still seems to be a noticeable amount.
According to Moves help, you can turn if off inside the Moves app settings by turning off tracking. At first I thought it came on the phone, but as others pointed out I installed it from google play..
I don't see any apps called moves? Is it hidden?

I must of turned it off some how... stock unrooted here.. i dont see it anywhere, not even in settings - apps - all.
*edit*
ahh it doesn't come with our phones, i dont have it installed even.
You actually have to download it from the play store. It doesn't come with the phone.
Crikey didn't know it used that much battery :/ might get rid of it lol

I see at least 10% battery drain due to Moves. Can't tell whether this is supposed to be expected.
Runtastic Pedometer has been doing much better for me battery-wise. Can leave it running all day and it is at the bottom of my list. Somethings not working right with Moves.
If you turn off tracking within the Moves app, won't that defeat the purpose of the Moves app? Ouch... Just checked mine and it's at 36%. I think i'm going to remove it for a while.
I cannot get my screen to dim when in a dark environment when on auto brightness. When I go into a bright environment it will get brighter, but once I return to a darker environment it will not dim. Only way it will dim is if I uncheck the auto box in the notification shade and then recheck it or if I turn the screen off and then back on. I've waited for up to a minute for it to dim and nadda! I've tried disabling auto brightness and rebooting/powering off & on without success. Any ideas before I try a FDR?
(I'm on the T-Mobile variant and only disabled some apps with the built-in application manager ...)
FYI - I am well aware of Lux and similar apps that "are better" than the built in setting, however, I am trying to figure out why mine will not work with the stock setting.
Thanks!

Safe mode resulted in same results ... looks like I am FDR bound ?

I am experiencing this as well. I drive a lot in the dark and this is a daily annoyance.
After doing further research I found that this might be as Samsung intended it to be. I found a thread here on xda (sorry, can't find it again) where someone looked at the code for the S6 (I think) and saw it had something to do with the devices orientation. If it's flat, the device would dim if not it wouldn't - as if Sammy doesn't want it to dim while you're holding it (I assume so if your hands accidentally cover the sensor while gaming/video watching it would not dim??). Sure enough I laid my S7E on the counter and turned off the light it dims fine. Turn on the light, pick up the device, turn the light off and nadda ... screen won't dim until it's cycled off/on or the auto box is unchecked/checked. Quite a stupid "feature" IMO

Samsung just like doing stupid things to tick its users off. So many little things with this device that are stupid.
Glad I found this thread. Lux is nice, never used it before. Much better than samsung auto brightness.
Lux is great. Once you start linking the brightness to your reference, it just works.

No reason why we can't have a working auto bright built in. My damn S4 and Note 4 works flawlessly.

I agree... while I like Lux the default auto brightness should function normally

May have inadvertently changed this in additional settings.
Can anyone advise what their default is or conversely what setting give the best result?.
Assuming it’s the setting for the screen (panel)?
However if it’s for the buttons I’m told this unit is fixed orange for the oem mercedes look.
It was trying to second guess that that made me fiddle with the setting [emoji51].
Screen looks nice but my work galaxy phone is more vibrant.
Hence some ill advised touching late at night after fitting it when me and my man flu should have been in bed.
Screen as is.

Here’s some further shots.
Pretty much got to grips with it now, all up and running including my reverse camera
Still have the dull screen though.
Any ideas if it’s a setting, some sort of potentiometer or a loose cable?.
Had good support off the vendor so far so not too concerned just would like it more vibrant and colourful.
Don’t think it’s that rgb setting as that was I think for the buttons
Here it is top is a screen grab, bottom is how it looks with my galaxy next to it to show the difference.
Any ideas?, I saw that the Joying have a potentiometer for screen calibration do these?
It’s a PX5, Erisin/Seicane/Whatever [emoji23][emoji23][emoji51][emoji51]?*
