Hi there,
I am on the beginning of my andriod journey from Apple and have pre-ordered a note 3 here in Australia :victory:
I am looking to ? Flash my N3 and install a custom ROM, as I hate the stock look of the N3.
My question is, do I loose the stock apps that use the S pen etc when I install the ROM?
Also is it possible to have the Moto X handsfree 'ok google now' feature on the N3?
Thanks!
Edit: so it seems that you don't loose the apps and functionality of the S pen. Although am I able to uninstall a single app, sayyy S fitness or whatever it's called?

Hi
Why do you hate the stock look? You can install new launchers which replace the home screen and app drawer.
You can flash a custom rom that is based on stock android which has the base look and this can be themed.
If you flash a samsung based rom you will keep the apps, otherwise you lose the samsung apps.
You can use Titanium Backup after rooting to remove or freeze samsung apps to remove bloatware.
Yes they have the feature for "ok google" but it is a bit different.

Thank for the reply.
I don't know why I hate the stock look, but it just doesn't seem blended, almost as if things are out of place... I just get feeling that the icons are just thrown onto the page with no real shape or design. I have seem some customs ones which really look nice.
Would you be able to point me in the right direction for a link that explain the "ok google" feature you spoke of? Does it work the same way the Moto X works? Ie screen is asleep and listens for a command?
Thanks

I got a new Nexus 4, from my girl actually :good: But I want to clean as much space as possiable by rooting it. But when I rooted my old LG P990 the thing got slow. I don't want this to happen to this phone becuase it is such a nice phone and very fast now.
If I do root, can I delete these apps without any problems to the phone: (ex. slow, other apps not working, etc..)

google korean keyboard (can I install Chinese? I am living in china studying Chinese)
Phase Beam

Thank you. I am loving this new phone. I swear i would never touch anything LG after the P990. But the girl got it for me and I fell in love. But after this phone I still won't buy another LG. Sumsong 4 is my dream still...
It won't make a difference in speed but when a OTA update comes out it will not install

Rooting your phone doesn't make it slow. You might as well just flash a custom ROM over it because when a new OTA comes and your girl accepts the OTA, it'll probably fail with you deleting apps from the /system/app/ folder. I recommend Carbon Rom with Franco Kernel (kernel matters more than the ROM in terms of speediness)
If you want to keep it stock... then yes removing those apps are fine.
If you want the Chinese Keyboard then just download https://play.google.com/store/apps/...29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5pbnB1dG1ldGhvZC5waW55aW4iXQ..
Why remove YouTube? YouTube is awesome and takes rarely any space.

Thanks for the help.
How can I delete them if I don't root? I am guessing I can't as I couldn't on my P990.
Also, about the OTA. So if I root, I will lost the abilty to update over the air?! Wow, didn't know that. That is a nice feature as I don't have a computer, I have the Surface RT and whenever I want to update or re-root my P990 I have to borrow a friends laptop. Its a PETA!
I don't watch contant on my phone or stream anything as I can't afford big data plans. If I am around wifi and need youtube, I go to my Surface RT, easier to search, etc. I don't consume content with phones. They are a tool for business for me. Plus youtube is blocked in China...
Thank you!

It isn't root that will not allow you to flash the OTA. Its the removal of stock apps.

ok. I was looking at the apps tab under settings and I noticed you can disable the stock apps. Do many people do this? I assume this will stop the app from working and not allow it to use the internet, correct?
Also, if I disable the ones listed above would that screw up other google apps? Will it make the phone a little faster? Maybe not noticable, but possiable?
Yeah disabling them means just that. Disabling Google apps may break things. I doubt disabling apps will make the phone faster. Its pretty fast the way it is.

Yeah, the N4 is not a Samsung device packed with bloatware. There is very less gain in wiping system apps.

Agreed although I do disagree with the bloatware part to a certain extent. Google does bloat their phones with Google apps such as: Google+ etc. I personally don't use it but it comes shipped. But yeah when compared to the other devices it doesn't have carrier apps or any Samsung app store or whatever.

I'm waiting for my i9505 and I really don't like the Samsung Bloatware (I will use CM 10.1 or another good AOSP ROM or even Android 4.3) but there are some interesting apps that might be useful for me, like some camera features and some air gestures, and a nice app for the ir blaster.
I understand that the stock camera has been ported to any custom ROM so it wouldn't be a problem with those features.
So what apps could you recommend me to replace the stock Samsung apps?
Thanks in upfront.

Hi,
Some of those apps require TouchWiz.
So, you are going to have to wait till they get some Dev magic to run on Aosp.
Thanks man.
I'm aware that you can't run Samsung apps in a third party version of the main the interface.
But I want to know if you, already S4 users, know about some apps that are similar, not the same or with the same features of Stock Samsung apps.
For example, I know if you get a call and you place your phone face down the ringtone stops or if you are getting a call and you move your phone towards your ear it automatically answers.
That kind of features I'd like and I really want a good remote control app, your suggestions are very much appreciated.

Hi,
I understand what you are saying.
Personally, I do not use the apps you are seeking.
So, I have never had to seek out alternative versions on the market.
That does not mean that they do not exist.
You may have to use the search function to see what is available.

Hey guys I have a AT&T Galaxy S 4 with a custom ROM on it. I've always been a vanilla android user, but I do miss one thing about the TouchWIZ interface. It is the air call accept.
My question is this: is there anyway to bring back the samsung air gesture functionality through installing some sort of samsung backend again or maybe installing the samsung dialer, gallery, etc. apps.
Thanks,
Nico

Or give this a try
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/air-call-accept-is-a-smart-way-to-answer-your-calls/
...and let us know how it works
That air reply app needs some fine-tuning in my opinion. From my use I found that the answer function is much more sensitive than the stock Samsung one. For example, it would answer as soon as my hand passed over the screen when reaching for the phone to take it out of my pocket or move it on the table.
But thanks for the input anyway, I'll keep searching as well and post back here. I can't be the only one missing some of Samsung's stock gesture functionality, am I?! Haha

This is a quick little question. I haven't been able to find a ROM that was just a smooth minimal debloated ROM. X-Note is full of a tonne of crap I don't need and it doesn't look like someone has made a 'stock close to AOSP' ROM. No offense meant, they're just not for me. Anyone have any good news? I might have to make one then...

Use debloater on a normal stock ROM, or just flash Cyanogen. Cyanogen is as slim as your girlfriend in thirty saunas.

I would suggest flashing alexndrs Rom. I have manually debloated this, very heavily.. all with root explorer followed by a data wipe. Over 850mb free in system.

Hello, mind to share it?
I am also trying to manually delete as much as possible.
All I need is the camera, the clock and the popup music player.
All other things could go, including the launcher as I have many paid apps for the several tasks.
I also do not use the pen.
Tried slim roms and debloater, also cm based ones but want to have the samsung base.
Thanks,
Best regards

Most of the time I also debloat manually but I give a try on the note 3 cleaner of cooolboy since most of the apps that can be debloat on his mod is just the same as my debloated apps.

How about before installing the custom rom that you will use, check the apps that will be installed on the zip file. Extract it first and check on the system/data. You can delete some apps but be sure you know what to delete.
debloating threads are really user unfriendly and have nearly no research on.
A lot of apps that are removed cause incompatibility with other apps. You can remove the non-sense My Magazine, and the built-in Email will go havoc, and you cant just offer an alternative mail client in that case.
If somebody slimmed down the stock firmwares, that would do a lot of ppl favours.

How is this possible without manually typing out 175 - 200 apk names ? No way i have the patience for typing them all out haha.

I think the reason there are no "slim" roms is because you will lose some of the features that make the Note range unique. Touchwiz is vital to those features.
By going AOSP - it will basically be a big Nexus.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app
actually, there are cyanogen mod for n9005. but you will loose samsung apps and its feature such as s note etc.
Sent from my SM-N900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There are alternatives such as Papyrus instead of S-Note (I like it better). I think the only reasons this phone is unique is the Pen (works in CM) and the size. So, a slim ROM makes sense as there's a lot of crap that Samsung adds that is not very useful.
I am using this ROM, like the OP I wanted all that crap of my phone. So found this here. I'll let the thread speak for itself...
I'd love to have a ROM like that as well. It would be especially great if you could decide for yourself what you install. Basically I want it as slim as possible so that the OS itself runs without errors but I don't want basic stuff like email, calculator and all that stuff either because the stock apps are usually crap compared to apps from the play store. I use a different calendar, email, calculator, music player, video player... so I just want a clean base OS to build on without all that stuff I never use anyways.

That would be nice but some applications rely upon others so you cannot remove some stuff because other things won't work.
Hi All
I have a Note 3 SM-N9005, I live in NZ and it works on the Vodafone NZ network here using my SIM card (don't know if these details are important or not).
Basically I've been having issues with it mainly in regards to sluggishness, especially when dialling, for example if I touch a contact and then touch "call" it will sometimes take up to 30 seconds or so to initiate the dialling.
So I was thinking about going down the root/rom route. I have never ever done this before so I'm a complete noob.
So I'm after a easy to install/use ROM, basically I would love to keep all the S-Pen features, and a few of the Samsung apps (mainly IR Remote (watchon), S-Note, etc). I also currently use Nova Launcher which is awesome for the screen realestate (customizing icons grid, widget sizes, padding etc). I also use the following widgets extensively:
Calendar Month view (I used to use S-Planner month view widget, but that no longer worked with Nova, so found another month view one)
HD Widgets (Weather/Clock)
DashClock (the lock screen widget thing)
Lock Screen Widget
Youtube Widget
System Monitor (a bunch of widgets showing CPU, RAM, Battery, Storage etc)
Onavo Count (showing internet usage)
Would like to keep all these as well.
I don't know if you guys need all this info, but yeah, let me know if you need any more info.
Cheers
OK so you want to keep TouchWiz based ROMs aka Samsung bases. There are plenty in the dev section. It really depends on what you want to customise and do tbh.
Alliance, Crash, civatos ROM, sweetRom etc, there's plenty more too. It's trial and error as to which you prefer/like - I personally used Alliance ROM from the start as soon as it was released, but again it's personal preference.

So all of those keep all the same features of the Note 3? I've noticed a few S5 roms, one even said "the best of S5 but with a s-pen" would these keep the S-Pen features or no?
Do Roms come with their own launchers? Or can I still use Nova?
Also is there a rooting/rom installing guide here on the forums somewhere for the Note 3?

Not 100% sure about the S5 ROMS. yeah they all have launchers but you can install NOVA and use as normal. In regards to root, if you have a custom recovery you can just flash SuperSU.zip but most custom ROMs are pre-rooted already.

Haha you've lost me already, I was under the impression I need to root my phone to install a custom ROM? I have no idea what custom recovery is for example. Need to find some guides on this I think.
Good cause I paid for Nova and quite like it.
Ah OK so you have a bit of reading to do.
I'll briefly sum it up for you.
Using ODIN, flash a recovery image aka TWRP. (make sure you have the right version) you don't need root to flash a custom recovery. Then you can download a ROM to your device and flash it.
But first, go to the general section in this forum of the Note 3, read the stickies regarding root, custom recovery and what events can and do indeed happen and most importantly if you make a boo-boo how to fix it.
Reading is the best advice I can give you, in fact its the best advice you'll receive from anyone in this forum.
Spend a few days, if not longer familiarising yourself with how the whole root/custom recovery process works and then IF you feel confident, go ahead and try it. Or simply post and ask for advice/help.
