Well I found out the hard way that the Gorilla Glass isn't as tough as I assumed. I had a Droid X2 with Gorilla Glass and that thing was a tank. Did a front impact demo and ended up shattering the screen and LCD. FYI its not covered under warranty and cost $99 + taxes to get it repaired and warranty replaced, if you have an awesome wife you can get her to talk them into doing $50 +tax.

Do you have pictures? Kinda curious about this I got tired of the otter box so I took it off

Flush face first impacts are nearly impossible for any panel to survive. It's rare to have it hit clean enough to do it though as one of the corners tends to hit a split second before allowing some of the energy to be absorbed. Gorilla glass or not. Older droid, newer droid, iphone... doesn't really matter. From an engineering perspective it's the worst possible thing that could happen. I feel for ya though. I'll probably 3rd party insure my Dev Edition.

Thanks still in Moto Repair Hell phone has been there for all most 10 days and still shows on hold Errrr!\
Well the phone was un-reparable so they are sending a new phone instead.

My four-day-old Maxx took a three-foot fall as I was getting out of my car, which did about the same thing to the screen. Photos are on the G+ Droid Maxx community. I'd just upgraded from my old Droid X, as you said it was a tank. I picked up the bumper for my Maxx, so far so good including one drop onto pavement (dog yanked on the leash I was holding in the same hand as the phone).
Well got a call from Motorola Friday that the phone was beyond repair and they are shipping a new phone no additional charge.

That is expensive. And a $100 deductible. They'll do DE? What's the turnaround time? Replacement or repair? Refurbished? All types of damages accepted?

They'll do any device as far as I'm aware (basically because of the deductible they don't care). Their promise is 5 business days repaired or replaced. Replacement is usually just a check for the original purchase amount. Their ADH coverage is pretty indiscriminate. The only thing Asurion covers that they don't is lost/stolen.

I had a Squaretrade policy on my Droid 3 and they did a repair. It was a very fast turnaround time. (I had gotten some gel material leak in my pocket with my phone, and the gel got into the telephone speaker. They took the phone apart and replaced the part.)
When I activated my DE the CSR asked me if I'd like to keep the insurance on it. I reminded her that I had the developer edition and that if I had an issue it would need to be replaced as such. She said it wouldn't be an issue. I asked her to make a note on my account just to be safe. Not sure i entirely trust her but worst case I can point to that on my account and be like "you said you'd take care of it"

Hey guys,
So I have my nexus 4, waiting for my (quite expensive) case and screenprotector to arrive - and of course I drop the phone. It lands screen first on ground (the back has the originial protector still on it, but it just has to be the front it lands on..). Luckily nothing is cracked, but it has hairline scratches.. On older phone I wouldn't even care, but I am sure you guys can sympathize how much it hurts on a 13 day device. I have a few questions:
- Any experience with returning it to google? It is within 15 days of purchase, might be worth simply returning it and then buying a new one. Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen (unless you look at it under light, you can't even see the scratches..)
- Any experience with getting the screen replaced - either via official repair center or manually? I have replaced screens before myself, but always on an older phone. On this new device I am kinda afraid to do it.
- Any other ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks, hopefully somebody has some experience with this kind of things! (and hopefully nobody has this experience ever again )
When your screen protector arrives, just put it on. My experience is that the screen protector will make the scratches mostly invisible.

Then why is it a big deal? You really have no right to return it since you dropped it and now it has tiny scratches. Not trying to be an ass or anything but that is petty on your part. Put a screen protector on and you won't see them anymore.

Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like a piece of lint under a protector. If that is not a protector then it is under the glass.

You have no right to return an item YOU damaged. A company can refuse a return of an item if the owner caused the damage. That's no different then me buying the phone and shattering the screen then saying oh well its only been two days so full refund please.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I think that you should deal with it, get the screen replaced if you don't like it with scratches. The fact that people say return it within 15 days after you damage it says that they are cheap and hold no responsibility for their actions. Man up. If you damage it, pay and get it fixed or own it with scratches on it - if it were that important to you, you wouldn't have let it get scratched up in the first place.

So I know we have had disagreements in the past, but this is one of the more naive things I have ever seen. He has a right to request a full refund within 15 days for damage that HE caused? That's absurd. I dare you to buy any ~$350 device from Best Buy, damage it, and then demand a refund because you are in the refund period. Please let me know how that works for you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Google requires a 10% (15%?) restocking fee on items returned within 15 days. Even if you return it, you will have to pay 30 to 35 dollars.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
To everybody talking (joshnichols189, VoiD_Dweller, and others) how I shouldn't return it:
The reason I said "Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen" is not meaning "i hope google won't notice muhahahhaha", it means - maybe google will not ask for the restocking because the scratches are small and google very nice. The word "generous" is there for a reason. I didn't say "blind" or "stupid" or "unlucky"...
I have a full right to return the item. If it is damaged, and it is, google has a full right to charge me for the damages. If I decide to return the phone, I will be ready to pay for my fault of dropping the phone (literally, haha). I am simply hoping google won't do that - not because they won't notice, but because they will be nice enough.
To others - thanks for the advice. Does anybody have experience with changing the screen? One option is to use this current screen as a screen protector - I already scratched it, might as well enjoy it, and if it gets too scratched I would just buy a new screen (these guys are not too expensive, do you guys know if that screen is genuine LG?)

Naive? No. Within 15 days of purchase as stated by Google you can return the phone for whatever reason you want. You people here are not the judge, jury and executioner. Google will obviously examine the phone when it is returned, and if they feel it is not in satisfactory condition, they will not issue a refund. That is up to Google to decide. And there are many companies, including credit card companies that will refund for a given amount of time for accidental damage caused by the purchaser.
I have not broken a phone since my iPhone 4 many years ago...an then it was just a small hairline crack. This morning my phone fell of the couch from about a little more than a foot high and it completely shattered. I have dropped my HTC M8 so many times in this way and not even a scratch or dent. I was shocked. Oh, well, guess I'm glad I kept my M8...back to it until I get get a replacement or get it fixed...only had this moto X pure edition for 5 days! Just hope it I can not break it more than 3 times (motocares limit) until March when new phones come out.

Ouch that must have hurt. I am too without a case. I like the phone without better. I have the Motocare as well.
The glass is a pretty shape, but it definitely gives me durability concerns. I just got mine, and I don't think I'll be able to use this phone without at least a slim tpu case.

lol, I did not intend on breaking or dropping it either. I've never put insurance on it either...did not on this one...had it only 5 days...no Motocare. Talked to an agent, he said it has not been 30 days...purchase motocare then make a claim. a little cheaper than the repair fee and i'll be able to use it again if needed. So that is what I did.
Don't you also have to pay a 50 dollar deductible with motocare?

I bought Motocare for my 2013 Moto X and haven't used it but then I use a case with that one. I didn't get it yet for this one.
I haven't seen a case I really like for the new one (it's in Hong Kong right now) but I keep thinking about what happens if I drop it. Maybe I will go back and get Motocare.
I dropped my first gen x from about 2 and half feet this summer and shattered my screen. It was on cement. I can only imagine the bigger x is even more fragile. Non the less what a great phone I'm on my third x now and have tried others and keep coming back.
Yep I just did the same thing earlier. Got my phone on Monday and just a small 2' fall flat on the screen did the job. My phone cracked at the top left and bottom right. I have cracks across my 5.2" screen now. I'm getting it replaced with MotoCare. I will also be buying a screen protector. I've not broken a screen on any of my phones ever.

I got the moto care too. The rounded edges of the glass are too much like the nexus 4 and my wife cracked her fair share of nexus 4's, so I figured better be safe than sorry.
I'm sorry for your moto x man, the first day I bought mine I bought a cheap tpu case and now i'm planning to get the unicorn beetle one, that case seems the most protective one for the moto x.
Which credit card did you use? There are some credit card that has 90 days protection. Call and claim if you have one of those. Good luck and sorry about that.
Same thing happened to me OP. The rounded edges of this screen really make it susceptible to drops and cracking. This phone is really slippery when in my pocket and it literally just slipped out while I was sitting down and cracked. Filed a MotoCare claim and got a replacement 4 days later.
The only thing that has me "pausing" on Motocare is the following:
1)I know it extends the "regular" warranty to 2 years, but I think it's unlikely that something will go wrong with the "insides" of the phone in that time.
2) The cost of Motocare+ 1 Deductible is about the same a s 1 screen replacement. So, unless you're going to break the screen more than once, it really won't pay off.
Thoughts?
I dropped my 2nd gen moto x at a retail store the other day without a case. Fell from about 4 foot and landed right on the glasses. Somehow it didn't shatter or even have a scratch on it. I try to always wear a case but kinda rushed out of the house without one this time (I rarely use a case in my house).
Probably depends on the angle it drops for anyone with durability concerns.

FWIW: I'm in the same mindset, for now, at least.
Title above sums it up. In all my years of owning smartphones and being so careful, I have never once smashed a screen through dropping it. Until a few weeks ago. My poor baby fell on the bathroom floor and shattered to pieces. It was ruined.
After many hours of googling, I found that there seems to be NO repair companies in the UK who will replace the screen, and whilst the glass portion can be purchased for under £10 on ebay, its an absolute nightmare to fit.
So reluctantly I contacted Motorola for a repair. After about a week of emails I was told to send it off to Germany and they'll take a look and give me a quote. Fortunately I managed to convince them to cover the postage cost for me :victory: :victory:
So off he went to Germany (yeah, my phones a he!). After what seemed like a lovely holiday of about 10 days (combination of sending it right over the easter bank holiday, and apparently very un-stereotypical German inefficiency) I got my quote back.
OUCH! :crying::crying: €238,04 - Around £180
FOR A SCREEN. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY POUNDS...
Now I know its my own stupidity, and I can't complain because I'm the dumb idiot who dropped it in the first place, and didn't have a case on it. BUT WOW THATS MORE THAN I WAS EXPECTING.
Which gave me the dilemma of pay it, or sell off my old friend with a smashed screen and buy something else / one without a smashed screen.
I'm reluctantly agreeing to pay it, but I have just ordered a case and tempered glass protector. £30 protecting your phone screen is well worth it! Especially with this phone!

I wish I had a photo of mine when I broke it, the whole panel literally just shattered. I looked at repair tutorials, having repaired an old ipod back in the day, but I didn't want to go anywhere near repairing this.
At least this screen is better than the 2013 version. I don't even know how my 2013 screen cracked. I noticed no cracks when I got in the shower, then it had a huge crack when I got out of the shower. It was on the bathroom counter playing music. My only guess is that the steam from the shower cracked the glass. In all my days, I had never seen anything like it. I had done the same with phones and tablets before and after, but have only seen the problem from the Moto X 2013.
I just dropped mine last week and it was the first time I ever cracked a screen. Moto told me it would be estimated at $125 to fix and sent me a replacement before I sent them the one I broke. They actually cancelled the charge!
Have you got house insurance, as with mine I it covers a certain amount of cash on items outside the home.
Okay, well after about 2 weeks, I have now received an email saying that it could not be repaired and that I will be sent a new one!
Should have an X code tomorrow and I will be able to design a whole new one! I'm willing to accept the delay for a free redesign, I had 2nd thoughts about the white front.

In the USA, I paid $125 and they sent me a refurb phone with my customizations and after receiving that "new" phone I sent back the broken one.
Fyi, my screen was pretty much destroyed (unusable).
Very good service (although I think they need that level of service when I have since cracked the replacement from a 16" fall out of my pocket).
Phone fell out of my pocket onto the pavement, screen shattered and touch no longer works.
Sent it to Moto to fix for $125, after a week they are sending it back to because they will not fix a device with an unlocked bootlader (yeah, that really caused my screen to break)
What can I do? Any 3rd party options to repair? Or how hard is it to do myself? I am pissed after only having the phone since the end of January

I'm not even going to bother with replacing my screen any time soon since the phone already annoyed me for the past month, development-wise, along with Moto's self-confused ass warranty acceptance with unlocked bootloaders.
Haven't found a 3rd party to repair it, but the replacement screens are going from between $60 to $100. And, videos on YouTube show that it's not hard to do. You just need a heatgun to loosen the backing off the phone.
Not that bad. I was shocked when my touch screen didn't work

I just did a replacement on mine today. You don't even need that fancy heat gun from the videos. I just used a blow dryer and was fine.
The biggest thing I needed was a good T4 screwdriver. The one that came with my screen kit was useless.

Sounds like Motorola is pretty much taking the stance of no repairs for those with unlocked bootloader unless it is an actual physical button.

One screw completely stripped (the one in the middle) so will be trying to drill it out later tonight
I broke mine about a month ago. screen shattered, touch unresponsive. The repair is SUPER easy. the lcd+digitizer is rather inexpensive as well. its pretty much unscrewing 25 screws, unhooking a couple cables and thats it. The insides of the phone is really neat and organized so dont fret.

Yeah but you bought the warranty. The bootloader has nothing to do with the shattered screen.
True. That is definitely unacceptable. Of course after finding out about their policy, I opted not to buy the insurance or the extended warranty. I have purposefully not unlocked my bootloader yet due to the warranty but I will give over after 6 months of ownership. I figure most problems will occur within the first few months or so or after the standard warranty is over. So far, I have been fortunate never to break a phone screen and only twice did I ever do a warranty (which both were the battery on my first smartphone in 2008).

I'm in a similar boat and very disappointed with Moto's handling of this situation. My issue was not caused by physical damage, but seems the result of poor QC on a phone three months old the screen suddenly started getting vertical white distortions on the LCD. I
It seems that Lenovo is being a stickler on this. Wish Google would have never sold Motorola mobility. I switched to the Moto line because they had more relaxed stances on dev type editions but that has went away now. Even their insurance plan is BS. They treat it as if dropping my phone and cracking the screen was caused by an unlocked bootloader.

Are they tracking unlocked bootloader codes? Or can you just re lock the bootloader before returning it?

mine also broke today
Hi
My screen also broke today (slipped out of hand from a small height). Upper part of the touchscreen working and currently using OTG cable and mouse to operate the phone. I am looking to replace the screen my self and came across these two options:
1. http://gadgetfix.com/motorola-moto-...screen-touch-screen-digitizer-frame-7447.html
2. http://gadgetfix.com/motorola-moto-...lay-touch-screen-digitizer-assembly-7402.html
The first one comes with frame. I dont know whether I would need a frame also or not? Which one should i go for. Also is there any reputed 3rd party seller which sells good quality screens?
Also my guess is even though my lcd is fine, i still need to replace it because it is glued to the lcd digitizer?
Correct me if I am wrong.

They might be tracking it. I'm sure they have the capability in place. You have to give them information that is specific to the exact device you request an unlock code for. Based off the way their bootloader unlock policy is stated, just obtaining the bootloader unlock code is enough to void warranty, regardless if you actually utilize it or not. I'm sure they are aware that some individuals in the dev community are in search of ways to erase any signs of rooting/customizations for either bringing up resale value or trying to maintain "warranty status" I'm sure this is one the main reasons they keep such controls on the bootloader unlock.

The T4 screwdriver from my kit didn't fit the screws in my phone. Was that an issue for you at all?

I don't think that was the issue. I remember them just stripping (the screwdrivers, not the screws) almost immediately. Perhaps they were a bit small, and that led to the stripping. I just think they were made of crappy metal. I bought a simple kit from Amazon and everything worked fine with the new tools.
I thought I saw a discussion previously, but free searching for it I could not find it.
So my Camera screen on my V20 shattered....I did not drop the phone or do nothing to where this should have happened (it's even in a case). I simply noticed it this morning, totally spidered.
I googled it and this seems to be a common problem with the V20. I am curious what people here have done to fix this problem.
Did LG fix it for free? Did you take it to a cell phone repair shop? Are you just dealing with it?
Thanks for the feedback.
Did you pull the clear sticker off the camera? This was a known issue before the phone came out, but the "screen protector" on the camera was supposed to alleviate it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBlUL-7Dl4U. Doesn't seem there are any replacement lenses yet.

Awesome....I can't even get it fixed?
No, I did not pull the screen protector off. I'm really irritated about it. Had I dropped my phone or something I would understand. To just break randomly though is ridiculous. I'm going to call LG tomorrow...But I'm sure they will be less then helpful.

you should pick out the screen(make sure not to scratch the actual camera lens underneath when you remove the glass pieces. Then buy just the camera skin from dbrand. It may not be the best option but it's a good temporary fix and its only 95 cents

It was hard to get a decent picture of it..But this shows the majority of the problem.

The way it looks to have started from the "Flash" area. Did you happen to use the flashlight feature for a little to long? I heard that the heat that is being conducted from the LED's can have an impact on the glass' structural integrity....but just speculating here.
Really is unfortunate man and I hope you can get it replaced ASAP!
What carrier do you have? I know with T-Mobile I pay a premium handset protection and this type of issue is covered under that, yet it does cost $150+ but you should be able to get an entirely new phone with that protection.

I do randomly use the flash but for short periods of time (no more then 15 or so seconds at a time).
I have T-Mobile and will probably call them or LG next week. I don't want to pay the $150 as it would cost less just to take it to a cell phone repair joint.
I'm hoping (and expecting) that they will replace it for free. Had I have dropped the phone I would just own it and pay to get it fixed. But I am super careful with my phones. I didn't drop it and it's in a case, so I don't feel that I should be responsible to fork out a bunch of money for a known defect.

I looked into these and it seems they just go over the screen...With that said, what do you mean them by saying "pick out the screen"?

Yea I would just go to T-Mobile they will more than likely "inspect" the device and if they do not see any tampering or abuse it should be covered but take that with a grain of salt.

I meant the pieces of the camera glass
So I went in to T-Mobile today. They basically told me there was nothing they could do and I had to call LG.
I called LG. They agreed to fix it for free however, o have to send it to them for repair...With no loaner phone. They said it will take two weeks!
Long story short, I can't afford to lose my phone for weeks, so I won't be doing that. Hopefully the replacement camera glass will be available for purchase soon, and I will just do it myself.
