Hey
As most people probably know there's not much RAM available on Samsung stock Rom. About 600-700MB of 2GB
But how much available RAM is there with Pure Android (Google Edition) or Cyanogenmod Rom?

It varies, depending on the apps and services installed, etc. but I've noticed that I tend to have about half the total memory free at any given time, so around 1GB.

The thing is that stock ROMs have services that cannot be killed that CM/AOSP do not have running, and they all suck up memory, and when you install user apps, they often carry background services that increase RAM usage.

CM is just a slightly leaner, but it's about the same. The most bloated, of course, is TW.
TW starts with 1G left ,and soon goes to 600mb left .After serveral app opened, it left only 200mb for me.
Aosp (slimbean in my case) start at 1.3GB left!!and sonn goes to 1G left, stable at 600mb left no matter how much app i open.
GE is almost same as aosp but with lower available at start up.

Because Samsung's TouchWiz software is so bloated with "features" almost nobody uses that it hogs up nearly all the memory on your device.
Too many features brings too much occupied ram to preserve them ready to be used ... atm i believe even 600mb of free ram is enough for anything to run ... the only time i came across ram shortages(in TW) it was when i was testing it's limits opened multiwindow chrome and opening about 4 pretty heavy desktop sites on it ... and that was before got updated because back then it used to get unreasonably bloated at times(at least on my device) ...
Anyway in normal usage that's not gonna happen ... so i believe ram is enough atm and there is no point on asking for more ...

I only have 50Mb of RAM, running stock Google ROM with Google Update.
I don't have a huge amount of apps, maybe 35...
Is this a problem?
What is the best way for me to get more free RAM?
I don't want to wipe if possible...
No, its not a problem, nor is 20MB free, etc. Android free's memory as needed by closing app's on its own. More memory will be had with kernel 2.6.32 when highmem for arm support is added. This may or may not change the amount of free ram, depending on how many apps are loaded to your phone, as its again, dynamic.
I had down to 20 mb of ram and the phone was very laggy those time. Had to restart it and everything was normal again.
What do you recommend for not having those kind of situations?
One option is to install a custom ROM
Second one is to use a task killer everytime.
If you want to unlock your Bootloader (void warranty) then go for Cyanogens MOD, aotherwise install something like App Manager.

I'm almost always operating at 20mb free without issue, I've even seen 5mb free, and still no issue. Its not windows xp, you don't need all kinds of crazy free memory to operate.
Personally I don't think Google will really have an issue with you unlocking the bootloader. Generally they seem to want people to play with it.
Flash one of Modaco's custom ROM's which has Himem and you'll have 160-230meg of RAM spare all the time. Blazing fast!

It's not Google one has to be concerned with. Perhaps the OP isn't interested in voiding their warranty quite yet, or ever.
Personally, I could never go back to the stock image but those on this site who are all about cutting edge are not the target audience I'm afraid
Have a quick question regarding RAM. My wife has a MyTouch Slide. After I do a soft reset she has 292 MB of memory/RAM available. After doing a soft-reset on my Vibrant, I only have 229 MB of Memory/RAM available. These results are immediately after using a app called Fast Reboot which kills all of the processes currently running on the phone. The only processes running are those needed in-order for the phone to work.
Is there a problem with the Vibrant not reporting some available memory or does it take that much more to run TouchWiz than it takes to run Sense?
Bumpidy Bump Bump
That is hard to answer because they are not the same phone or even running the same firmware or even the same setup. You because you kill the tasks, doesnt mean the tasks stay killed. Most of the time if you kill a service, it will start back up automatically. Also things you have to consider is What you have on your Home scree. You wife could have no widgets on her home screen while you have 8. How many Icons are on the screen as well. Also wallpapers make a diff too. If you had time on your hands and really wanted to find out. You could factory reset both phones and JUST install fast reboot. Remove all icons from the home screen and set your wallpapers the same image then check .
Im starting to think the same thing. I rarely see over 200 free(with my current setup). I'm not sure if running ADW launcher over touchwiz causes it, but I would hope so. My phone performs well enough to where I dont need to test it, but it would be nice to know or see what would happen if we were able to run CM w/ ADW as the default launcher.
I have been wondering about the ram myself. Specs for the phone list 512 megs of ram yet I stick usually around 130m free when I hit atk. I know everyone suggests not using task killers and I wont after froyo or cm6 and I only kill user genetated programs ie ones i have opened. I read a post taking about froyo unlocking the use of all of our ram?
Sent from my Vibrant using tapatalk pro.
From what I understand, the vibrant runs on kernel 2.6.29 which does not have himem support. This means that the phone will not "see" all 512mb of ram.
The reason why people posting that Froyo/2.2 will unlock the rest is because Froyo by default runs on a kernal that is 2.6.3x which does support himem.
It's possible for a phone running 2.1 to have a newer kernel and thus access to all the ram. This may be the case for the MyTouch Slide. Can you check under "About Phone" and see what it says?
Also, even with Himem support, not all 512mb will be visable as "available". Some of it will be used by the OS and some of it is used up by the GPU from my understanding.
At this point, all we can do is wait for the official Froyo update from Samsung. I'll live vicariously through international Galaxy S users as they explore the alpha/beta release that's available and see how the bugs are squashed as we get closer to an office release. Apparently, even the early Froyo release doesn't have built in himem support or JIT activated. So we will need to wait until future revisions are available to draw any conclusion on performance increases.
Please correct me if anything I've stated is incorrect.
Above poster is dead on ... once the new updates come w/ the new kernel support the SGS will "see" the full 512MBs of RAM, as will all other 2.1 Android devices.
I just wanted to add that I don't think it matters how much free RAM you have. The Android OS manages your memory and often loads stuff you don't even need in order to cache it in case you do use it. If you're low on memory, the OS will also kill off tasks to free up memory dynamicly. Task Killers are usually a waste since the OS is already doing this for you. The only way it's really useful is if you autokill apps that you almost never use, but the OS *knows* how much you use it and would kill that app first if it needed memory anyways.

Hey there! Its me again... I'm wondering if I hace to change rom or not, but will ask either way...
What's the best, or what are the best rom 4 the phone that can actually fit in 150Mb of System partition?
I'm actually using build 3 from tejas12, as it seems to be the bugless around, but been seeing lots of roms around and I just would like to know which rom, o another rom to test...
150 System partition gives me 220+ data partition... Sadly, I use some apps that can be name as memory eater, most of them are at SD but even that way, I still need the space, actually I just hace 25Mb free, just close to the notification of the lack of memory =/
Any help?

If you need more space for apps, create sd-ext and use Link2SD, you'll have more free space on your phone's memory.
Its not the same than just move then to SD ?

It is not same, for link2sd you need ext partition. Diference is that with link2sd you can move everything (lib, dex, app) what is not best to do.
About your question... just download any rom you like, recovery version, and use 7zip to shrink it. Remove some apps that you dont need, you can remove media files that you dont need to. I do that all the time, and it work without problem.

This ROM is the best - #2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145302
Hey, instead of making new post I decided to bump up this one.
I wanted to ask which ROM should suit me best - I use this old (but good) phone mainly for calling and as tracker for running. So for me most important thing is GPS strength (I've tried several ROMs and some find signal really fast and some take up to 10 minutes) + not freezing when playing music + sports tracker app (Endomondo/Runkeeper) is open.
So far I've tried:
1. PolishVodka's ICS and JB ROMs are almost perfect. Very rarely it freezes, but amount of free RAM is less than GB and running music + sports tracker make my phone sluggish. Anyway props to PV, I'm looking for alternatives not because his ROM is bad, but because our device is just too old for new android.
2) Zoe ROM 6.5 and 7 - honestly I just don't see where is speed in this ROM. Yes, there is more free RAM, but for me it runs slower than 4+ ROMs.
3. Miroslav's 2.3 clean ROM - liked this one because I could customize whatever I wanted and nothing preinstalled + had like 90 MB free RAM, but even after changing system language text under icons was still in Russian.
So I want GB rom (because they run better and more free memory) with strong GPS fix. Working WiFi deepsleep could be nice since I have phone connected to wifi almost all the time, but it's not priority since I leave it charging almost every night.

My screen re-draws a lot.
I phone Samsung support to see if they have a fix in place. My call was escalated to 2nd tier support. I was told that TouchWiz is thrown out of the RAM as there is insufficient RAM to function the device and keep TW in memory, No revelation there.
I said I never had this with this S2. I was told that the S3 has been designed differently to the S2. The S3 loads as much as it can into the RAM so apps open quicker and this won't change in the future JB builds.
Nothing revolutionary here on the subject, but Samsung are aware of the redraw and its designed to work this way,
Personally, I'd rather wait an extra 0.5 of a second for an app to load than have the redraws. what about you?

Yeah I agree I'd rather wait 0.5 of a second then have to wait 3-5 for a redraw. They should at least give us an option in Developer options.
Ideally all the S3's should have come with 1.5 or 2gb Ram.

Agreed. I did say that the phone is underpowered in the RAM area and it all went quite on the other end of the phone...
They suggested I keep an eye on how many web pages are open in the browser and keep a check on the apps running. Basically to manage the phone closer than before with the S2. Reminds me of the WM6.5 days.
I was told however, that my feedback will be passed on. So fingers crossed for the S4 then!?

You're right, but we are already aware of the re-draws and there's little (if anything we can do about it).
I guess if we stick with a less memory hogging launcher like Nova (or Trebuchet) will work but somehow it won't solve it, just hide it.
I'd rather have an app open instantly, though, but that's me.
I have noticed a lot less TW redraws on the JB leaks, in fact a grand total of 0 redraws, so I don't quite believe this "it will not change in JB" unless it's to do with the fact there is more usable RAM in the JB leaks.
Supercharge it 100% using v6supercharger. Patch services.jar and you will forget this issue forever. :good:
Just move on to CM10 already, faster and smoother and no redraws.
Got Sick of Redraws!!!!
S3 suppose to be a Samsung's Flagship phone....they can even sort out this issue.....i don't fancy flashing different ROMs as like TW & UI of stock rom.
Any suggestion on any ROM close to the Stock Rom with no home screen redraw? please

+1 that is my experience as well. ICS builds have 781 MB of usable RAM, JB leaks have 833 MB usable (according to the built-in task manager anyway). That seems to be just enough of a bump up in RAM to greatly alleviate the problem. I suspect the S3 will be the last of the 1 GB flagship phones from Samsung.

The choice of 1gb ram by Samsung on the i9300 was a very bad one. No doubt about it. Although I don't suffer launcher redraws as I use sslauncher, proper multitasking isn't possible due to low ram.
So now Samsung is releasing the i9305 with 4g, 2gb of ram and quad core. It will be available in Australia as of today.
There is now word that 2 of the major telcos here will be selling it alongside the i9300 until the i9300 stock runs out. After that only the i9305 will be sold.
So basically, only 3 or so months after its release the i9300 international will the old model here. And loyal customers who rushed to buy it will be stuck with a lesser phone. Not happy.

Hense the silence on the phone was deafening today when I mentioned this to a Samsung technical advisor. For weeks after this was released people were banging on about free RAM is wasted RAM. They were just trying to kid themselves. With all the new features of the i9300 and Samsungs desire to cache everything so it opened instantly it needs at least 2GB.... bummer.
Wanna buy a i9300?
More ram is higher battery drain i thought.
Simple solution : root and remove all things u dont need ( have a look at apps manager in settings), i have no redraw since then, stock kernel stock rom.

No TV Out as usual
Notification Led doesn't work for everything (Whatsapp)/Led is always white whilst phone is ringing (Changing the default Led colour doesn't stop this happening)
Switching to front camera is VERY SLOW (I hardly use it though so not bothered)
Last time I checked, Siyah kernel wasn't working with the new build so no Eargasm support (One of my main issues, DSP doesn't sound as good)
No touch to focus whilst video recording
Some people have camera issues when focusing and using led light (Haven't experienced it myself)
9 times out of 10 animations are smooth, then you'll have that one noticeable time where the window animation stutters
Apart from Eargasm and touch to focus whilst video recording, can't say I miss anything else. Definitely suitable for daily use. Haven't had any lock ups etc.

It could be because of MIUI's way too aggressive killing of background apps. RAM management is quite poor.
Also MIUI exaggerates the amount of free RAM by including the cached amount as well. Lightweight ROMs like LOS in conjunction with microG are well suited to the 2GB variant.
