Probably the main reason behind not to decide yet to buy it. For me is a BIG ISSUE. I have always rooted my phone, and have installed many ROMS, for me, is a MUST. I am buying a hardware not a software.
95% of mobile device owners don't even know what a bootloader is and could care less. Almost 100% of companies with BYOD policies don't let rooted and unlocked phones on their networks whether or not they have Knox.
You're also confusing Knox for consumers and Knox for business. On the consumer side activating Knox is totally optional and when left unactivated makes the N3 just like all Samsung's previous devices. There are real benefits of Knox to people that don't care about bootloaders being locked. You can prevent the phone from being wiped if it's lost and stolen and can hide sensitive files you don't want people to see in a seperate container on your phone.
Here's the overview of how Knox works for consumers...
https://www.samsungknox.com/knox-consumer
For XDA Knox stands to bring with it some real negatives. Including a new warranty status method that can't be reset. So the 5% of people that want to unlock their bootloader and flash non-stock s/w without affecting their warranty have a right to be pissed about Knox. But the 95% that don't care and corporate IT departments with BYOD will be thrilled with it.

In the end, if we are talking only about the loss of the guarantee, it is a fair fee for changing the characteristics of the instrument. After all, no one is saying that the manufacturer refuses to fully service the smartphone - for your money every whim. It's time to learn how to make decisions and to take responsibility ...
Finding about this issue has just knocked the N3 from the top of my upgrade choices. Not happy at all.
Looks almost like a kicked up refreshed version of hboot on HTC devices. Anybody else get that feel?

You guys are mis-understanding what Samsung Knox is.
I'll let Apple explain it

We'll see about that. Judging from what I've read on the S4 forum, it looks like you're buying a device without a warranty.
(If you have no intention to root or mod your Note 3, what are you doing reading on this forum?)
Or to paraphrase the Google search page, are you feeling lucky?

Well, why not? I see. This is what will make the device according to the personal. At once and for all ...
Rooting voids the warranty. Anyone in there position wouldn't care about the 5% who void their warranty then try to get around it and still have it covered.
So it's harder to scam a company into covering it under warranty? Oh well... we all full well now we are voiding our warranty every time we root.

The Samsung has no obligation to xda. And we have a choice - to lose warranty or shake for it. The validity of that to pay for everything. And the phrase "I do buy the hardware and not a soft" - fundamental error ..

Yes and no. Pretty much all of Samsung's devices have had some form of flash counter in them. Plenty of people who root their devices and don't use Triangle Away have returned the phone for service, and Samsung fixed it anyway. I recall one guy saying has flash counter on his Note 2 was over 100 and they still fixed it without blinking an eye.
The legal side is questionable too - Samsung can put any clauses they want in their warranty agreement, but even if you were to agree to them in writing they wouldn't necessarily be enforceable. I don't know if anyone has ever had reason to test it, but if they refused service on my device I'd be expecting them to be able to justify with reasonable certainty that the fault was caused (at least indirectly) by running non-standard software on the device. I suspect if this were tested in court they would have a hard time enforcing it. In reality the non-rooting clause cannot render the device void of all warranty, but if the software needs to be reinstalled by them because of a faulty flash or to rectify a problem caused by rooting, they can still charge you for that.
Same way Dell can't void the warranty on my laptop if I load Linux on it........
* This is based on the terms of statutory warranty in the country of purchase. So in some jurisdictions the vendor has more freedom to add limitations.
So it's going to be impossible/hard to root this phone with the KNOX security? Is it going to be totally impossible to do it?
I am totally addicted to ROOTING my phone and installing Custom ROMs s this is going to be a deal breaker for me if it's not possible.

You do not understand the basic. This technology Samsung KNOX ® has one goal - to tie the device to one particular user. That is, the device will not be a secondary market, as the user can not be removed. This means that the whole story is not vulnerable device, basically ...
p.s. I think that's why this technology has been approved by the Ministry of Defense USA. Or maybe I just being paranoid ...
In the EU rooting does not void warranty. I work at an official samsung cervice centre and we must fix softbricked phones at no cost since the updated licence.

After rooting and flashing my SGS2 loads off times and the counter was on over drive I installed Resurrection Remix pro v1.1 and though this would be the last flash, everything was great with it and I really looked cool but then things started going downhill. First the camera went down and so did the camcorder app and then the wifi as well so I thought ok go back to stock and start again, then when I was flashing stock the phone just froze so I took the battery out, put it back and tried to restart it but it didn’t…….I tried everything to get it working with no luck and I thought **** the warranty is void, idiot, what am I gonna do, so this is why I have an A level in lying. I rang Samasung up and spoke to a lovely lady from India call centre, as you do, told her it won’t start up, no lights, sound nothing and what I said to her is that I was trying to download the new ICS from kies, said it started to install it and after about 5 secs the phone went dead, anyway Samsung posted out a pre-paid jiffy bag the next day and in the description problem I wrote about what I’d done and posted it off the same day thinking $HIT what have I done, I’m gonna get it back with Samsung telling me to shove the phone up my arse. Anyway 5 days later the delivery turned up at the house and I was shaking, sweating and crying so I thought I’ll take it out the bag without reading the documentation etc and just try and turn the phone on and guess what lol lol lol it was fixed, my heart nearly missed 100 beats, couldn’t believe it or am I just lucky guys cos I feel damn lucky but now my only problem is I’m scared to death of flashing any new custom rom in case it happens again and can’t download anything using kies so I guess it’s just me, the mobile and touchwiz gingerbread ****e lol hope this helps people.
Kies is always a good excuse .
Two choices one stick to Kies or two join XDA development take all the precautions read the faqs and instructions and take the very slight risk of bricking or paying for warranty .
jje
Couldn't you have reset the counter with a USB jig or something? Before it hit too many flashes?
thanks
Hope i'll never to have to use that kies get-out-clause again but have bricked it loads of times but my best friend "jig" helps me out lol
but the phone went down when I flashed it so didnt have chance to jig it and that's why I was ****ting meself but all ended fine thank fuk

I have been writing up here that custom flash counter do not have any reference to warranty irrespective of big shots here using their overclocked brain claiming that it voids the warranty.
Only thing to know is that if Samsung finds you have custom firmware, they will install the official and check the phone. If they find the phone defective on stock firmware, they will proceed with regular warranty claims as usual. THAT IS IT!
well lovely samsung installed the 2.3.6 official when i started it up, better get used to that now lol

Completely wrong why would Samsung send out a letter to service centres stating that custom roms and root both void warranty and to look on the phone for root applications .
Why would their be reports of service centres actually turning customers away with root or custom phones .
Why would XDA mods constantly state that this will void your warranty .
Why was my SGS rejected under warranty as it had a custom firmware .
Why say it does not void warranty when the warranty conditions says it does . Even if users get away with custom or rooted roms .Its wrong to say hey guy its not against the rules and even more so when you are not going to back their rejected claim with the money to pay for a repair or are you .

No where in the warranty terms and condition it stays that custom ROMs void warranty. Also there is NO WHERE stated in the custom flash counter that it voids the warranty. I know its bit of a gray area and Samsung CAN turn down warranty repairs/replacement/refunds, however through appropriate escalations and contacting the right people certainly should help as there is no way Samsung can say that you "rooted your phone? hell its you who infected it with the deadliest virus and its about to explode so no warranty for that!".
I am not telling folks here that we should encourage others using custom firmware/kernels, but only telling to use them with caution but don't ASSUME that it voids the warranty just because you use them. I have dealt with Samsung and still do with open issues never resolving, I take a refund and move on. Custom firmware or not, I ensure that I use the phones with utmost care and keep them like new with even a scratch but use it at maximum of its potential while also not living with Samsung's strictly official ROMs as they miss about half the features I would want to have on my phone.
Remember - Samsung themselves release source code for their Kernels and put Open Source Android on these phones. Restricting ourselves to their official ROM only guarantees seemless warranty support, taking a diversion do not imply it voids the warranty. While I agree that we should seek support only when having official ROM without root, custom ROM counter doesn't mean it voids the warranty anyway!

I know a bunch of us out here have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a custom recovery, be it cwm, twrp, or philiz. After having root for several weeks and modding my note 3 the way I like it, I am wondering if there is a recovery method that will void my warranty but is already available. I realize many may not like this option, but at the same time I'm sure many like myself feel it's worth the tradeoff. Given the fact with a custom recovery and backups, many of the issues that may occur needing repair, outside of hardware failures obviously, can be fixed or restored via cwm. Many if the software bugs or issues that sometimes occur can be fixed via flashing stock after clean wipe or in the future a custom rom. So I'm all for a warranty proof recovery but at this point I'd much rather give up my warranty without hesitation than go without custom recovery.
What about you guys, is it just me or are there others around here that would do the same? And please if anyone has succeeded in flashing cwm or twrp and broke warranty let me and others know, who are willing to do the same as most if not all threads are talking about warranty proof recovery.
Thanks
Mega
I'm with you a long as we don't rush anyone to an incomplete "solution".
At this point I could care less about warranty. I would much rather get the ability to flash a super debloated Rom or even AOSP(yes I know I won't be able to use the pen). I think the Knox 0x1 possibility may be why there isn't a CWM/TWRP yet because the devs are wanting to preserve the warranty of the device. I know DesignGears has already tripped his Knox flag.

True that. Wanam and Unicon for me.
In a heartbeat I give up warranty for the option to finally get CWM, and get an awesome ROM like Scott's CleanROM on this phone. Debloat this beast, and tweaks to give even better battery life, and also makes the phone smoother / faster than stock.
Warranty from AT&T is pretty worthless anyways. I had some severe issues on my HTC One X with the Gorilla Glass just scratching to hell for no apparent reason and they refused to even switch it out with a refurb. There was a petition going around online with people claiming the same issues...I even sent the store manager a link to an XDA thread about it and they told me they would do nothing for me because it was considered physical damage and it was my fault. Garbage. I almost left them over it...the GN3 tempted me to stay.

AT&T is pretty lax on battery replacement. My original battery had problems reading the current charge percentage remaining after fully charged. They just sent a replacement without asking for the old one to be sent back. Now I have a spare even though it does take the correct readings.

Because so many people cry about not being able to have their full warranty that it's probably holding back development. They don't realize that AT&T will not check their phones and send them a replacement whether they have a custom rom, Knox 0x1, etc. I've personally have NEVER had a device denied. They've been rooted, they've had custom roms and I've ALWAYS have gotten a replacement. So give it up will all this "I need my warranty crap." Seriously.

I had an issue with my microsd card not staying in my note 2 today.
Rooted, custom rom.
I took it into ATT service center, figuring that they wouldn't care about root/rom, since the damn spring wasn't working on the micro sd slot.
The tech there told me she couldn't give me a replacement, since the phone was rooted; even though that had nothing to do with my sd card spring issue. She told me if I unrooted it and came back, she would then replace my phone.
I reminded her that rooting has nothing to do with a sd card spring, but she claimed that Samsung now inspects all the returns from the service centers, and if they find root, there is no credit given..
I find that impossible to believe, when you consider how many phones get returned every day, nation/world wide, but, my only point is, you never know what the status of your warranty is with ATT until you try to make a claim...
Never had issues like this with Sprint ..they couldn't care less if you were rooted..
And, BTW, I too am a corporate client with 4 lines on ATT, so no "special" treatment for me..
To those wondering why I started this thread, as others have mentioned above...every dev or cwm twrp thread ive come across talks about the hold up for warranty and not tripping the efuse or whatever....I paid outright for my note 3 and have never bothered with warranty anyway, and am sick of waiting to have cwm for safe backups for modding. As I noted im sure there are just as many who dont care enough or at all about the warranty or flash counter to give up custom recovery...I for one never bother fixing my flash counter on any of my phones or tabs, as I just dont care enough to worry about it, especially given the freedom and availability of flashing stock, covering your custom status theu custom recovery for any situation other than nard brick hardware failure. So please, any dev that sees us in this post asking for a dirty flash for cust recovery....void my warranty but give me cwm lol
seriously tho, I am tired of waiting and if warranty is the hold up on breaking the boot so be it...bye bye warranty hello recovery.
thanks guys
mega
I agree completely. If it's too broken for me to fix it it's time for a replacement.
regarding warranty, keep in mind that when a phone is swapped under warranty, the device is sent back to ATT via delivery. The device is then scanned to make sure you are returning a device you initially claimed for.
The device is NEVER turned on. It is only checked for physical damage.
Think on the mass amounts of shipments received in one day at the warranty center. Do you k ow how much time and the many employees needed to actually achieve turning on each phone to see what is working and not?
And also your device gets sent back w/no parts..batteries..etc. that would mean they would first have to grab batteries and back covers to start the run down?
never in a million years. the packages
only get checked for device / claim confirmation & no physical damage thats it. it then gets thrown into a recycling bucket.
These phones costs barely nothing to the mobile carries. They make most of their money on services. I remember hearing from a exec at ATT a while back when the first GNOTE arrived that each device cost about 7-10 bux wholesale.
Any losses from warranties easily get passed on to subscribers quietly along the line.
The only concern about custom /warranty voids is when you exchange your device at a warranty service location in person. That is your real only risk of getting shot down. ATT has a few of these locations around the US.

They either have no margin, a small margin or lose money on phones. Thats why you are locked into a contract and $700 unlocked device costs $300 because it's subsidized. Prices drop as new devics come out and manufacturers run promotions based on volume. Carriers have to commit to a certain number of phones and when they suck (facebook phones) they get rid of them cheap too

Will there be a root solution without tripping the knox counter and how soon do you think after launch??
The phone isn't even being sold yet. Nobody can answer that question until the phone is in our hands.
although what EP says is 100% accurate, maybe worth checking out if something was found on Note 2 (which is no), Note 3, S4, or S5. If none on those, then most likely not on the Note 4 either.

I think that in regards to warranty, Sammy still has an obligation to repair your device. They may charge you for the repair, but I'd say they'd need to prove that rooting was the cause of your problem - say a defective battery or non-functioning sim slot.

Well, because not tripping knox is better than tripping knox I would say. What if something goes wrong with your phone that has nothing to do with rooting? I am sure Samsung in that case would also say, sorry, you rooted your phone, there will be charge for fixing this. If I create an unrecoverable brick, then, I would take responsibility for that, however, No one I am sure would want to be responsible for a problem with their phone that had nothing to do with rooting. It was just a question, that's all. I am rooting whether knox is tripped or not.
when you root your phone, Samsung says your warranty ends.
Period.
Your carrier may cut you some slack on a issue that comes up, not related to rooting, but most of them will refuse to do anything warranty wise if you are rooted. Obviously, they have to either ask you, or check themselves.
Over the years, I never had a warranty refused because of being rooted, and when I brought a phone in with a problem, I never volunteered that the phone was rooted, and they never asked me.
But, that might not be the case for you or anyone else.
Sure, if you can root, and not trip Knox, and there is a way to unroot and return your phone to stock in case of service being needed, that is the ideal scenario, but once I root any phone, I always assume my warranty is over, and I think most of us that have been on XDA for awhile would agree with that statement.
Top half of my screen suddenly goes bad out of no where!!
Anyone had this happened to them? Half of my screen now flickering, showing weird lines, unreadable stuff, and constantly flickering, and turning off. I can't even keep it on for more than 5 seconds.
Please see this video below.

I can only think of RMA. .

I hope your device is in warranty.
What happened to you makes me think twice before flashing custom roms, tripping knox and voiding the warranty (which I already tripped and voided)

All of those are software related customization. This problem I am having is strictly hardware. The AMOLED screen panel is internally damage somehow that cause it to messed up like that.
Flashing, rooting, tripping knox or whatever won't cause this. A lot of people get this wrong and blame on modifying the ROM as part of the cause but one must understand the difference between the 2 before making judgment.

Yeah, I know that.
I meant that messing with the software (flashing, rooting, tripping knox) voids the warranty, and if a hardware problems occurs (irrelevant to your flashing activities), such as in your case, you 'll be left without a warranty (although you didn't cause it)

we'll see about that from Samsung.
Knox 0x1?
They will probably offer a "very competitive" out-of-warranty repair price.
Got a free replacement tablet from Samsung! Bravo!

Hopefully, they will provide the same solution for your case. Keep us posted, and good luck! This kind of hardware failure should never happen with a top end device like this.

in my experience from years past, nobody that takes these returns really cares about root or custom ROMS when there is a hardware problem. The customer is usually shipped a refurbished model immediately while the damaged unit goes back for repair. By the time it gets to someone whos smart enough or loyal enough to care about root, the customer already has their refurb. when i sent in my droid x2 for repair it would ALWAYS boot to recovery options on first boot, then you would have to tell it to boot normally and it would. i was fine with it but forgot about that when i went to get it repaired....
they asked me "whats that green stuff on the screen?"
me: oh nothing.... *presses -boot normally- button*
"does it do that every time?!"
me: yeah but i dont care
"wow that must be annoying!".
then they shipped it off for repair and i got my refurb.
i dont think manufacturers or service providers care as much about root as many people think. they do a lot to prevent it sometimes but I have never had an issue on getting warranty services on a rooted device.
keeping in mind that none of those warranty services were because of software problems... every phone had something wrong with it physically.
Agreed, most phone warranties are like cars. It under warranty unless the "mod" could have possibly caused the problem.
Hi
I bought the new Samsung GS6 a few months back. I just got it, noticed some pink dots on the front camera, but it was gone next time I used it.
I rooted it and after a few months I noticed that they're there in low light conditions. I sent it for repair and they will repair it for 1962,5 kr. (297.72 USD).
I was told, that warranty in Europe was not void by rooting and have seen many people link to this.
http://matija.suklje.name/rooting-and-flashing-your-device-does-not-void-the-warranty-in-eu
Anyone know what to do? I live in Denmark if that helps.
Do anyone know if it is void or not? I know in my country, they should (in the first 6 months) prove that the fault is made by me if they should deny it. They will change the circuit board and I should pay that myself, because I rooted the phone. The dots were there before and also, how can rooting the phone (with the right root) cause hardware issues since they will change the circuit board?
Thanks in advance
Most custom roms allude to telling you it voids your warranty, i'm not sure if rooting software tells you that as well. Generally you take your phone in your own hands when you root because technically the phone has been altered which could theoretically cause problems.
I doubt there is anything you can do aside from pay for the repair or refuse it.

They just told me, that they cannot enter the phone, because I have rooted the phone. They said I can not get back to stock, before the circuit board have been changed.
If you used the pingping root method, it doesn't trip knox so you should be able to go back to stock without them ever knowing, however I stand to be corrected if this is not the case.
If you rooted the phone using CF auto root, then you would have tripped Knox and you have technically voided your warranty. However, if you used PingPong root, then Knox protection should still be intact, which means you still have warranty.
What you can if you have tripped Knox is try to go back to stock firmware and hope they don't notice that Knox has been tripped.

I used CF-autoroot. Fixed the link, try read it. I should get it covered. It's barely 3 months old.
It's back to stock, just with tripped knox counter. I unrooted and did a factory reset. Do I need to flash stock rom too? The knox counter will still be 1...

I still have the right to get it repaired, even tho it's rooted.

It's not about root. It's about tripping Knox, which voids the warranty - different from root altogether.

It doesn't matter what custom roms say in their disclaimer or what samsung claims, samsung needs to adhere to the local law, which states that simplly rooting does not void your warranty

it's the law that deal with statutory warranty based on EU Directive 1999/44/CE, §7.1, which samsung cannot deny

I did so, they send it to their workshop (or what you call it in english) and they sent it to Samsung, which confirmed the root and now back to me.

you should bring it back and get it repaired and also demand back the money they charged you for inspection but maybe speak with a consumer organization in your country first. Sometimes it can also help to use twitter and facebook to get your right.

Yeah, will try. Can call consumer organization after 9 tomorrow morning, so will try that and see what they tell me.
But thanks for your time and sources. Well probably help me out a lot.

btw it's not samsung that denies you warranty, it's the shop you bought your phone from, they are responsible for the warranty
