AOSP ROMs for G2 - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to decide between the G2 and Note 3. Obviously both have their plus and minus points but what will sway it for me is the dev action with vanilla ROMs.
I know it's early days for the G2, and N3 isn't even out yet, but I'd like opinions on whether G2 is gonna get much love in this respect? Did the LG Optimus G Pro get much? Also any other factors preventing this, such as locked bootloaders, etc. I will be looking at getting the UK version.

A super alpha (more proof of concept) cm10.1 just went up today.

Wow great news to hear there is a CM build for this already, even if it is a really buggy early alpha right now. It will get better.
I think that if the Nexus 5 is in fact what we have been seeing the past few days in the FCC papers then the G2 will also get some great AOSP love since the hardware itself is near identical, the physical form factor is what is changed.

I don't have enough posts to post in that thread, but I'm on board with this effort. I'll gladly help with getting a fully function CM port running; doing so will also effectively complete the groundwork for a true Nexus-like vanilla AOSP build.
I'm a professional developer who works with desktop C++ and embedded linux, hacked on and rolled my own kernel drivers, etc. My plan is to make this my weekend project and hammer out ABI/proprietary binary issues to get a build of either CM or AOSP fully functional. Odds are good that the release of the N5 will make this process substantially easier as it will share a very similar hardware platform and include binaries linked against the latest kernels for KitKat.
I am excite.

I had been running Carbon ROM on my GNex and loved the AOSPness of it, but have to admit, I kinda enjoy some of the LG stuff. Would love LG + AOSP rom including things like tap-tap and the camera (although I miss Photosphere)

Man, I would love some AOSP ROMs for this phone. I agree that the knock-knock on/off is a nice feature, but I need vanilla Android. This LG skin is just too much for me!

You just have to wait patiently. Barely 2 weeks ago CM10.2 went up for the G Pro finally, and since then, you simply have to look in the Original Devleopment forum to see what has happened. Literally, a dozen AOSP 4.2 and 4.3 ROMs popped up, all perfectly functional.
Just wait and contribute all you can and we'll all see AOSP soon.

I'm really looking into the g2 being my next device. However..... If it can't have a fully functional PACman ROM ported over, I'm out then.

Getting Bored with My G2

I've owned my G2 since it's been out, and I have to say that I'm starting to get bored with it. I have it rooted and I've flashed just about every ROM that's been released for it. Sadly, all the recent ROM development is for ICS, and most of those are in alpha/beta stages. I need something new, fresh and is close to 100% bug-free as possible. I've played with most of the Sense based ROMs, MIUI, and CM7 creations, but my primary DD has been CM7.1 Stable.
Just thought I'd share my thoughts here, see if I'm not alone in this, and what others have done to get out of this rut.

My contract won't expire for about a year, and I'll more than likely be leaving TMO as their service is horrible in my new place. That's an issue that really isn't tolerable at all, but my boredom comes from the decline in ROM development for this kick ass phone. Sure, it's an older phone, but it's still a great phone that other phones can't compete with. Also, I tried ICS and I honestly wasn't all that impressed with it. I still enjoyed running Froyo and love Gingerbread, and wish I had the skills/talent to develop updated/enhanced flavors of Sense/AOSP/MIUI based ROMs. There's many to choose out there, but as I said so many of them are in alpha/beta stages with the prevalent "camera not working" bug.
The purpose of this thread was more so to see what ROMs people were using as their DDs, but based on your question I'd be interested to hear what G2 owners have upgraded their phones to as well. I love my G2 and will be sad to part ways with it when that day comes.

Google was my friend, and the S is coming out for TMO and X for AT&T.
I'm getting equally bored. My contract isn't up till next jan but I'm thinking of trading in for an asus padfone. This will also replace my asus transformer. I enjoy the keyboard on the DZ but I just feel there is a drop in gingerbread development and ICS is in need of proper drivers. Maybe things will change when the DHD get official update.

I've been using gb miui for nearly the time I've had this phone (about 6 months). I've played with the HTC one x and galaxy note and without custom roms I don't think they are any smoother in general interface than what I have (overclock to 1.5 helps). However you are right, I've also tried nearly every rom out there and after a few hours or days running an ics rom I always come back to miui because it's bug free and fast.
Development has slowed lately, probably because they've run out of things to improve, but there are a few ics development teams improving their roms on a weekly basis so in a couple of months I'd hope for a near perfect ics version.
Saying that I'll be getting a galaxy note in a few days because I still want something new and different.

I am also extremely interested in finding out which the roms the community is using as their daily rom. Like OP I have flashed most of the roms and now am just looking for the most stable rom.
ILWT all the way!
I first flashed it in February and have come back to it every time I've flashed another ROM. That's more that can be said of any other ROM I've had.
Supersmooth performance, stable and everything works.
In regards to the phone itself; this is the first phone I've ever had where I'm actually reluctant to get another because I don't want to let it go. I bought my DZ about 14 months ago. I'm not bound to any contract so that is not why I keep it around. I'm guessing it must be true love

Custom ROM or not on the N4?

So I rooted my SGS2 so I could get ICS and the JB.
With the Nexus 4 one doesn't get that benefit so I'm thinking I may not install a custom ROM.

Not right away, but more than likely I will eventually.
100%. It's the whole point in getting a Nexus device for me.
I bought an S3 and was expecting awesome dev support, having come from a S1. The lack of Exynos documentation kills any sort of chance of good AOSP based roms for that device. S3 is now sold
Stock android is great but things like lack of T9 dialling and lack of quick toggles bug the hell out of me.
Of course. Have the last version of android is only one of the things you get with a nexus. Have the last version with a lot of addons is better. Read what aokp offer.

same for me! i have a One S and i'm tiered of waiting for a stable aosp rom
I hope some of the manufacturer skins get ported over. I honestly enjoy Sense every once in a while, and that skin LG has on the Optimus G looks pretty sweet. But I really love vanilla android and always end up running AOSP for the most part. And MIUI, big MIUI fan.
Cm10 will be available within a week or two for the n4. Perhaps even sooner than that. Android 4.2 is not a huge update. I remember when 4.1 went live, it was incorporated within a week or so. That's what I expect for cm10. Even aokp and all aosp ROMs. That's how I see it

This. I am genuinely looking forward to giving MIUI a go again! I used to love it on the S1.
With the Quad S4, I highly doubt we'll actually even see a visual difference. It'll be a placebo effect for most people.
I'm half-tempted to just run full stock since I'm getting tired of the custom ROM scene. Kernels are ok though sometimes.
I'm willing to flash a ROM but I from flashing so many ROMs on my GNex I realized that the ROM doesn't add much improvement. To notice any improvement you're gonna want to flash a kernel instead. Roms just as features, but for the real gain in battery and speed you flash the kernel. So I'm gonna wait for Franco or Morfic to get their hands on the N4 and crackflash their kernels lol.
I never felt the need to install a custom ROM on my N7, so probably not, there's not a whole lot of improvements that can be made when the N4 is already 100% pure Android, as most of the custom ROM's I've dealt with on other phones are basically trying to make it 99% pure Android. Not to mention if you get the 8GB model, performing backups will be a pain.
I like the custom ROMs, mainly cm10, because of the quick toggles, weather on lock screen, etc. A lot of tweaks are made, just like aokp, which is another good ROM. Also, apps are also tweaked, like adding iso or a timer in the camera app. A lot of good tweaks are added with custom ROMs
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 4G
On my old captivate (which was running 2.1-2.3) had roms running on it left, right and centre. But once I got the gnex and ics I didnt feel a need for roms anymore as well as with jelly bean. So I probably wouldnt be using roms on the N4 either.
I don't think I will be installing a custom rom on the N4. I like the stock look which is why I rooted my Droid Incredible and flashed CM on it. Seeing as most of the stuff I use in CM 7.2 has been incorporated into the later versions of Android is another reason I probably won't flash a custom rom unless a really useful feature is added that I would want.
The first thing I'm gonna do when I get my N4 is root and flash a battery mod. :silly: I'm still kinda annoyed Google hasn't added this.
With my Infuse, I rooted and added a custom ROM because I was sick of what Samsung added to the phone. I might just keep this phone stock for a while, and enjoy the updates as they come in. I like some of the features some ROMs offered, like Paranoid, but I'll just see how everything goes stock.
Maybe not the first week or two. But after that there will be some awesome stuff. Plus I'll prolly make one for myself like I always do.
Definitely looking towards custom kernels and UV and OC scripts.
AOSP or AOKP will be flashed ASAP!

Thanks for posting the question OP. I'm a big fan of CM and I wish it was a simple answer. It's rather complicated. I came from the Evita (HTC One X) over to GS4 and I was wondering whether the GE would outshine CM. Currently I'm on CM10.2 nightlies (just arrived) with a nandroid of KangaBean GE backed up on my phone.
Basically, if you're coming from TW stock, you may love GE unconditionally and love it's rock solid stability. However if you've gotten a taste of CM, you're going to look at GE as a bit bare boned when it comes to features. I think the CM devs are brilliant but you'll have to contend with a few bugs in the nightlies here and there but that's not to say CM isn't a daily driver. On this device, it absolutely is good to go. CM also has literally has an army of devs adding new security features and new apps to enrich the experience (Focal and hopefully in the near future, Chomecast). GE isn't doing that at all and you're really relying on a couple of devs teaming up and trying to add mods to enrich the experience.
Also regarding updates, the CM team is absolutely committed to keeping you on the bleeding edge. If you noticed, Android 4.3 dropped and the CM team SWARMED on it. The Github was a mess for a few weeks but they essentially ripped it all apart and put it back together in a very short period. Now they're on 4.3/CM10.2 nightlies for most devices. On the other hand, if you think just because you have a GE phone you're going to get the latest updates you're in for a rude awakening. It wasn't billed as a Nexus device so don't expect updates on that level. Hopefully GE updates drop earlier than the TW updates so the devs can get their hands on them for you but I'm not holding my breath on that one. To be honest, I think you're more likely to see the next version of Android come from CyanogenMod.
So you just have to pick your poison. I think I'm going to restore KangaBean today but I'll likely be back on CM before the day is over.
GE
First of all, did your phone already update to MF3? if so your only option is rooting at this point the Loki exploit was patched in MF3 and your likely SOL when it comes to custom roms, possibly permanently, bootloader workarounds or unlocks are tough and I haven't seen any signs of progress on that front around here on XDA
If you want a rom that is a stable excellent daily driver go with GPe rom, no issues or lag whatsoever.
If you want to be on the bleeding edge, use CM but it still has some pretty big bugs at this point, they don't even have a milestone release at this point I don't think, it's just nightlies. There will be issues
The few extra features aren't worth the bugs imho, I don't mess with CM until they get to a RC for my device, (occasionally I've give a milestone release a try) because the bugs bother me.
I'd rather have stability over features that I rarely use.
Most people on XDA tend to overlook a lot of small and sometimes big bugs with very early releases of AOSP roms like CM and AOKP
Casual was super easy and that's what I used to root, though I swapped out TWRP for clockwork recovery as it has auto-loki

Now when you were on CM did you ever make it to CM 11 M8 Build. I really enjoy that ROM on my s4 but I have better luck using Dan's 4.4.4 GPE ROM. its way more stable. I really want to love CM because I believe they have so much going for them but I have too many issues. Plus battery life is not amazing. No horrible but not amazing.

will G2 get custom 4.4 based roms?

right now I'm still torn between G2 and Nexus 5, while G2 clearly has a rather superior hardware I've been spoiled with the look from pure 4.4 experience also unfortunately the Nexus isn't available yet on my country.
but from what I've seen there is no 4.4 based rom for G2 too, the question is, will it happen? specifically though I really want the kitkat version of Paranoid Android, will it come to G2? or is it actually more sure will come faster to Nexus 5?
It will eventually. But no manufacturers will gets it as fast nexus devices. If on time updates and rom is your main concern then your choice is limited.
-LG G2
I'm torn about this too, interested in the G2's battery life but only if I can get AOSP very smoothly and with no fuss. I wonder how stable CM11 nightlies will be for the first few months.

yeah, gsmarena battery test on nexus 5 kill my enthusiasm with it, however if it still a looong way for G2 to get 4.4 based rom then I'll just get nexus.
I know that everyone says that Nexus devices get updates the soonest, and while that's completely true and valid, to me it doesn't feel that way. I usually wait for CM or AOKP to put out stable builds before I upgrade, and by then they've built for every device and my neighbor's cat. Heck, it's been two weeks since 4.4 came out, and so far the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7 officially have it, while in the mod community, CM11 is already out for other devices in a useable form. So, certainly official support for Nexus devices is quickest, but practically all the devices in the mod community get updates pretty quick.
That being said, the Nexus 4 has no official 4.4, but we on LG G2 are going to get CM11 very soon.
is this phone really get the support for at least 2 years from LG or they will just leave G2 behind with only one/ two update provided like what they did on their flagship phone in the past like LG Optimus 2x

It's so true. I'm disheartened by the lack of availability for the d803, however don't posses the skills to do something about it. I was obsessing over getting the nexus 5 for as long as it was leaked it was coming out. Once it was confirmed it wasn't coming to Verizon I thought I would settle for the G2. Let me tell you that now I have had it for 2 weeks and tried every ROM out there so far. I can happily say I didn't settle at all. Great phone. Came from gnex. Roms are coming out. Not at nexus speed but they are out there. Waiting for pa 4.0 but I am rocking a ROM from the droid Razer forum not xda called vallidus by GZ ROMs. Lots of functions. Everything you could want. will it work on the international version of G2?
Hosers, eh?
Well, my take is that the Nexus is so similar to the G2 that we can't help but get lots of dev support (ie, so many of us who didn't want to wait for the Nexus and/or changed our minds at the last minute the same way a Chevy dealer puts a Corvette in the showroom to sell you a Malibu). We might not see as much as the G4 or the One, but Chrysler still sells a ton of cars even though they are not Ford or GM. I came from a Skyrocket which was just different enough from the S2 not to use the same roms, but close enough that it still has (unofficial) CM/PA/AOKP/PacMan support plus half a dozen hobbyist roms two years out.
Will we get "Official LG" Android 4.5 six minutes after the Nexus? No. Will I be stripping the factory rom and bloat off my phone the instant I get home from vacay (and off this stupid mac) and NEVER looking back? Absolutely.
And to the 803 guys and gals, I make no claims to be an expert by any means, but from the little reading I have done so far, the main difference between the models seems to be in the bootloader not the rom, so if that's the case you're bound to have someone up there willing to compile CM or whathaveyou for the 803... it just might not be "official."

*off topic* CM and PAC are both official for the rocket, so is Carbon and Slim Bean. That community is awesome and I still find myself visiting it daily. Team chopsticks already have a pretty stable alpha 2 version of cm11 up for the ol' 727 and, you're right, there are a ton of hobbyists in that community that have brought just about every rom you could want.
I'm just worried about getting myself into a situation where AOSP ROMs aren't working out or have problems. What's the main diff between T-Mobile (D801), AT&T (D800), and international (D802)? Does international work on US LTE? Does the Loki patch and CM 10.2 absolutely work on the T-Mobile version?
People.. Quit worrying it will happen

Voted yes. We have a pretty good chance of getting official cm support, right? I'm sure this device will be really popular due to its quality and most importantly it's price.

Who knows what CM is planning for this device, but at least one person (myself) does plan on working on omni for it.
More is better

We have already got a team of great developers currently working on it, myself included.

Haha that's a Banana republic....Nobody wants to support my galaxy chat
But I guess moto g is not samsung's That makes it special
I feel that the only reason Samsung release so many similar yet multiple devices is to stop developers to focus on them...that way we have to buy new devices
Mayb out of context but my pentium dual core pc with a cheap graphic card and cheap extra ram works pretty nicely with windows 8

The Moto G will get done if a few developers decide to do so. The best thing is to have an unofficial port first of all then polish it up so it doesn't rely on ugly hacks and a fully functional rom can be built using the CyanogenMod repo. Then it can be submitted to the CyanogenMod team for evaluation. If it passes then it could be official.
So developers, let's be having you!

I'm looking forward to omni more than cm tbh. I don't like the direction CM is going, they have changed a lot recently. It took them so long just to get a stable 4.3.

Yep, Omni looks very promising. Saying this as a long-time CM fan.
Important thing is that we can see a couple of first-class devs flocking here.
I'd rather have OmniROM but the more the merrier.
Voted as well, i'm getting a G next week so Cyanogen support is welcome even if i won't flash it others will.
