Thanks. I just checked out the sticky on here for the new root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577
Will that keep all my data?

Also I'm on AT&Ts latest MF3 build. If that makes a difference. Sorry this is the first time I have every tried rooting a phone.

Dude.. if you already find the correct thread. Why don't you ask there. I guess it will not wipe your data. At least on mine it didn't but I my contacts are stored on my gmail account. So my best advice is ask on the thread..

This doesn't format your ROM it uses your sdcard to install root So you will have to wipe your sdcard. So any pictures or other items on it you will loose when you format it.

And why are you rooting?

Can I Root without "Wipe," to recover accidentally deleted photos?
I'm on NC1.
I need to "Root" without wiping the Internal Memory.
I was using Internal Memory for photos and in a state of stupor (I assume), deleted a folder I thought I moved to my PC.
So the files are now deleted. I want to use one of the many recovery tools but thus far, all that I can find require "Root" access.
BTW: As an aside, does anyone else experience issues with copying too/from Internal Memory to a PC and the files seemingly go, or at least them are visible in Explorer, but then after disconnecting the phone, when you look for them, they are not there?

Data when installing a new rom

Hi folks !
My question can sound stupid but I use to store my data ( video, music,...) in an SD card when using my HTC desire.
With the N7 no such things...
So I would like to know if my data aren't gonna be delete if I flash a new ROM on the N7?
Thanks all sry for that easy question
Hi I am a newbie when it comes to these things, but as far as I understand you lose everything when you unlock and root your device.
For example I have downloaded a few apps and put some of my music and a couple of videos I want to watch onto my nexus. If I now unlock and root it I will have to download the apps again from the play store and set them up again with my preferences as these would have been lost during the root/unlock process. Then I will need to connect the Nexus7 to my PC and transfer the music and video files onto the nexus again. So you need to set aside a couple of hours to do this, obviously the time it takes depends on how many files you are transfering and how many apps you have to restore.
After your device is rooted you can use the app of your choice for backing everything up. I would use Titanium Backup, but that's my choice! That's why its best to root your device straight away so you don't have the hassle of re loading everything

Not asking for that but thx thought. I'm already root I want flash a new ROM
Are you using TWRP or CWM to flash?
In either case, you don't need to do a full wipe, just a factory reset (I use TWRP) is enough. It doesn't clear the folders of your media.
Using CWM ,Yo OK THX dude so I can flash a new ROM for example paranoid and only loose my apps ? Not all the other stuff right ?
Sorry misunderstood the original question

Is root retained after N7 Factory Reset?

My Q is as above
I am struggling with the lag issue, so would like to reset, and cannot find a definitive answer for the above.
Also, will Titanium backups be preserved on the pseudo-SD folder?
Thanks for any answers, it isn't easy to carry out a proper search of the forum on the XDA mobile app.

All a factory reset does is wipe Data/Cache, Root is located in the System, so it will stay rooted..... As for backups, same idea, Obviously with a lack of external SD card support, the SD folders act as "external" source of sorts and will stay untouched during a wipe. Keep in mind when you rooted you had to unlock the BL = wiping everything and your SD information would still have been there.
As an extra note, I had lag problems as well... I found that generally it was applications that were causing the problem and I didn't require a wipe to fix it. (My biggest of few issues was a rotation application for the home screen). Could be slight compatibility issues with JB, unsure. Good luck

[Q] Deleting everything but essentials on sd card

My mytouch 4g is rooted and running Hyperion Yoshi. I don't really like the layout of it so I'm going to try and flash CyanogenMod. When doing a full wipe before flashing a new rom, I thought it wiped everything on the sd card too except back up files such as Voodoo rootkeeper and the backup made in CMW. Unfortunately, it does not remove all the app folders, files you downloaded, etc. It basically only removes the system files...So my question is how do I remove the nonessential items or rather what back up files do I need to keep and just format my sd card so everything is clean?

Download a file manager (file manager, es file explorer)from the playstore and delete whatever you don't want.

I want to delete EVERYTHING except for the backups, but I don't know what the backs up are and I'm scared to delete stuff because it might make things on the phone nonfunctional or accidentally delete a backup.
Backups would be in clockworkmod recovery if your talking about nandroid(backup of your system)

What you need is Titanium Backup, it can backup apps and system apps. Also you could use usb storage and make a backup of your sd card on your pc in case you delete something you needed.

No he is very aware of what's going on. You posted something totally irrelevant to the question. What he is saying is when you give help, give actual help don't just say something good about a good app. That doesn't help the person who asked for help. Merry Christmas. Don't be rude

Apparently you didn't understand either. Oh well. Ask for clarification if you don't understand. In any case no need to fight about it.

Take a look, maybe it can help you.

Best backup app without root?

Just a quick question... I want to hard reset and then flash the new firmware, what's the best backup app?
I especially dont want to lose whatsapp stuff (logs and pictures) and the sms (and of course all the apps installed).
Is there a way to do so without root? Thanks in advance.
It seems you are asking for the impossible.
The apps needed for those backups needs Root Access esp. for the case of Titanium Backup

Well, for instance...
Whatsapp does a backup of the logs on the internal memory, so is it possible to copy these files on the sdcard, wipe, and then copy back to internal? Does that work?
The phone settings and apps, if im not mistaken, are also saved on the gmail account.
And the sms... kies (which sucks) does backup them.
So it shouldnt be impossible for an app to do what i just said... or am i wrong?
Thanks.
Doesn't carbon work without root?

Try Superbackup application. It can take backup of your applications & message. Just check.

I just helium to move phone's and it got most of the information across just missed my email accounts. It's free too. Once it does schedule backups I will buy. Good luck.
I believe 'MyBackup' works without root
