Dan Hesse would probably get on his knees for the iPhone. $69.99 for the iPhone 4 on the Everything Data plan would take Sprint to new heights.

I just don't want it crippling the network. I can see using my upgrade for it if nothing makes me want to leave the evo. Can you imagine the craigslist price on launch?
Wonder if they would put it out as the first 3G only phone with a premium data charge?

You bring up a good point. I can't see how they could justify a $10 fee on a 3G phone. Lets pretend that the iPhone is a sure thing if they want it, I could see them either being greedy as hell and attaching the fee anyway, or not carrying it until there's a 4G version. If it's the latter, you probably wont see a iPhone on Sprint until they (if they every)change to LTE or Apple includes a WiMax version (which is unlikely).

We can hack the cdma iphone to work on our sprint network, correct?

Ironically you can have Sprint phones on Verizon. Unfair I know but "dems da brakes."

With Verizon and AT&T both scheduled to have LTE networks by Summer time, I wouldn't be surprised to see the iPhone 5 be LTE ready. That's 1 year after the EVO w/ WiMax.

lol not doubting there will be an LTE iPhone, just saying they will make some huge announcement about how it's the greatest thing ever and brand it in someway that will make it look like they developed LTE/4G from the ground up, meanwhile they're the last one to the 4G party

Forgive me, I come from the GSM side of cellular, but why wouldn't this be possible? I can take an AT&T iPhone (800/1900MHz) and run it on T-Mobile (1900MHz). It should be possible to flop any Verizon (800/1900MHz) to Sprint(1900/2100MHz). Again, I am fairly new to the CDMA side of mobile so it is quite possible I am missing something obvious.

CDMA doesn't have SIM cards (well at least not here). You have to activate your phone via the carrier and ESN number of the phone. Sprint will only activate ESNs that are in their system (just Sprint phones).

It's easy with gsm phones cuz of sim cards (except the iPhone). We have phone specific esn numbers attached to Sprint's network.

That's the iPhone product cycle in general. There were probably a ton of people who bought AT&T iPhone 4's today despite the looming unveiling of the iPhone 5.

Funny how my thread got epically trashed by noobs and trolls, yet this thread that is discussing the same thing seems clean. inb4 trolls log on and start acting like retards.
As far as ESN cloning goes, from what I know, its only illegal if you use it avoid your payments and do deceptive things with it, but if you are actually paying for your service, then i don't think you can get in trouble for it.
The only reason ESN was even made illegal was to stop people siphoning money from the companies and such, but since you own both the device and the service plan, i dont think they can do anything to you. And im pretty sure if the cdma iphone were to be dropped, it would be unlocked within matter of hours, and then modified for sprint and all the other cdma services within a matter of days.
What i want to know, is if someone can actually hardmod the phone to enable sprint wimax, or verizon lte on it? (most likely not since iOS is closed source, but still possible)

Changing the ESN is a very gray area. BUT changing the operating frequency of a transmitter is a whole other ball of wax(which you would going between Sprint, and Verizon or AT&T, and T-Mobile. Once you change the operating frequency that the transmitter was certified for it loses it's FCC Type Acceptance. It is no longer in the eyes of the FCC a legal phone. Now doing it to equipment on bands outside the cellphone allocations the FCC really doesn't monitor, or enforce unless someone complains. Fart around on aircraft, cellphone, and govt/military you will be paid a very personal visit by an FCC agent (and in this day and age the local swat team, and reps from various three lettered agencies).
FYI the only FCC licensed radio operator that can modify transmitters (or build for their personal use) for operation (within spec) on their allocated frequencies are Radio Amateurs. Once that radio has been modded it can no longer be used outside the Radio Amateur Bands.

[Q] SIM only no contract carrier that supports the G2?

I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):

I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb

AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

According to Wiki, Simple uses T-Mobile and AT&T. Interesting, I wonder how that works, since those 2 carriers don't use the same 3G frequencies.

If you really wanna save money port your number to google voice and remove your sms plan and drop your minutes down. Be creative and you can save money.

Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.

I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

I've decided!
Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

Should I switch from tmobile to att for atrix?

Hi I currently have the new g2x from tmobile and will probably be returning it today.(too many issues). The only other phone I want is the atrix so I'm thinking of canceling my tmo service and buying the atrix. Do you guys think it is worth it. I'll be paying about $10 more a month. How does every one like the atrix and att. Or maybe a comparison between att and tmo if someone has had both.

I'm with Tmobile now and using the Atrix unlocked. Try to go down that route if you have the resources to buy it outright. Otherwise, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix. The upcoming gingerbread update in the summer is only going to make it better. They've already ironed out most of the issues of early adopters with the new 4.1.83 update. The full power of this phone is yet to be unleashed.

i have an atrix on tmobile and i dont think its worth it honestly the phone has a lot of issues this is my second one from motorola and this one doesnt freeze as much but there is def a manufacturing defect there is a small section of my screen that doesnt work on either phone i had and im just living with it now becuz i dont want to send it in again and wait two weeks because it has been out getting fixed longer than i have had it I was thinking of trading mine for a g2x

Bootloader is still locked. You can root and "mod" it, but currently the bootloader is still locked down...

Thanks for the replies that was fast. Tmobile kinda sucks where I'm at. I work on an island where I get pretty spotty service and I live 200 feet from a cell tower where I get great reception but by supposed 4g speeds are 800k max which its pretty lame.

I don't really like samsung phones. And I actually like motoblur. I also really likethe idea of the 2 docks. I saw that people have ubuntu running on these phones does that work with the docks? I also dint have the cash to buy it out right.

What a run on sentence, not a single period in that whole statement.
But on topic,
If you can return the phone and terminate service with no cost, then do it. But if you are to far into your contract and you are facing a termination fee, I would try to find a Atrix on craigslist or a trade and sell cell phone store. Yes the bootloader is locked, but there is people hard at work trying to find a solution. Yes you could wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2, but there is no guarantee it will be a better phone.

I was also wondering this. And I will have to pay an early cancellation fee but with the g2x I got a partial upgrade and ended up paying $400 with a $50 rebate. it will cost me $200 to cancel service and,$99 for the atrix through radioshack.But the g2x is not great too many bugs and tons of backlight bleed not worth the $350 I payed with a contract extension.

OP, I'd say give it a try. Do you know of anyone who has AT&T where you live/work? I know every carrier is different in every location, so it may be worth it to give AT&T a try. I personally love the Atrix and have been with AT&T since they were Cingular. I know for my fiance, when she had T-Mobile, speeds were good right next to a tower, but it seemed like every time we traveled, she was roaming on AT&T Edge. This was true for where her parents live and where my parents live, too. At those locations, I was on AT&T 3G and speeds were great. So for us, AT&T has good 3G in more places than T-Mobile. But, everyone's mileage may vary. What is good for one person with regards to phone/network may not be good for the next person.
EDIT: oh, and you have a trial period with AT&T. If you aren't satisfied, return the Atrix and AT&T service and stick with what works for you.

I do not know anyone with att but I think I'm gong to return this phone tonight and pick up an atrix and try out att. Hoping its better than tmobile here.

I literally live 200 ft from a tower that seems to have every carrier up there. Everyone that comes to my house has full service. And e what kind of employer discounts are you taking about? I an self employed.

I left Tmo on 04/10/11 for ATT. So far, so good. Love the Atrix since .83. Atrix is a suitable phone if you want android. iPhone is fine too. I'm still within the 30 grace period and I'm deciding to go with ATT for my mobile carrier.
My mom loves the the free mobile to mobile (no minutes used regardless of carrier).
I'm converting and I have no qualms. Haven't had any dropped calls (yet). I'd say go for ATT.

keep your g2x stay with tmo. its basically the same phone just a lg body instead of motorola. my buddy has the g2x. plus by next year all the networks tmo and att have will be shared and there will be new phones out. get your handset replaced if your having issues it may be hardware lemon. the atrix has its issues too no phone is without issues. youd just be trading one tegra based device for another and getting a slower network that costs more

The problem is the screen bleed on the g2x I've looked at several devices and they all have it. And our makes the screen look like crap. plus I've been missing way too many calls at work because bad reception. And I really want a tegra 2 over the other dual core processors.

Is MetroPCS unlocking phones?

Hey guys, I was searching the interwebs for some general unlocking info and I found this from a couple years ago. Pretty interesting I think, what happened to this? Are they actually reflashing phones in-store? As far as the "gradual opening of the US wireless market"...it's gradual indeed

MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.

MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.

Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

They are an MVNO of T-Mobile. To be honest, I would just go with T-Mobile's monthly 4G plans instead of Simple but to each his own. Some people swear by them.

I'm about to go to sprint for the unlimited data. Att is going to start throttling me on mine. I've just all these GSM phones laying around and would like to use them.

It won't be unlimited for long...WImax sucks too....but whatever makes you happy.
I'd say take Verizon up on their double data promo if your going CDMA

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.

I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

Ahhh I see. Still too little for me. I hook my phone to my tv and watch Netflix, the news. Play games and such. I'm a data hog I know.

Moto X on Republic Wireless seems like an AMAZING deal! ($299 contract free)

$299 for a Moto X contract free? Are you kidding me?
Not only do you get a Moto X for an amazing price, but they also offer plans as low as $5/month based on your usage needs.
$5/mo = Unlimited wifi calling and texts
$10/mo = Unlimited wifi/3G calling and texts
$25/mo = Unlimited wifi/3G calling, texts, and data
$40/mo = Unlimited wifi/3G/4G calling, texts, and data
The only drawback for some, depending on their location, is that Republic Wireless uses the Sprint network for cellular service. This drawback is somewhat mitigated though by the fact that Republic Wireless enhances all their phones with the ability to make calls and send texts via wifi (as well as 3G), so either you live in a metro area with good Sprint coverage or you have wifi at your home and work.
Anyone out there planning on jumping on board later this month when Republic Wireless starts selling the Moto X?

In terms of pure bang for the buck, no major carrier offers anything close. (No smaller carrier does, either.) This is one cheapskate who's looking forward to a much lower monthly bill -- and a state-of-the-art phone.

Anyone have a preference between the two? Moto X for $299 on Republic Wireless or Moto G for $199 (16gb) on any carrier?
Decisions decisions...

CDMA sucks... if it was a T-Mobile mvno then may be. Who wants to be stuck in CDMA land and not compatible handsets.

Don't have my X yet. But I have a qualifying Moto phone that works and has service on it that would make the X net $199 after I wait 2 months for the gift card from Moto. So if there isn't a pretty steep discount there's no reason to buy the G even though it's a very nice phone for $180 in 8GB dress and $200 in 16.
Only 5/1.3 MP cameras, compared to 10/2.

G won't hit US carriers before January according to the launch presentation. Should arrive with 4.3 or 4.4, will get 4.4 early in 2014.
The G has a 4.5 in. screen (not AMOLED but not specified on the G site either), Adreno 305 GPU, quad core 1.2 GHz, no Touchless Control, no LTE. GSM versions can do HSPA+ but CDMA versions (RW/Sprint/VZW) only have EvDo rev. A., so you better hope that the local network isn't totally plugged if you ever need data.
Sounds and looks like a good phone for the money but the X is getting higher user reviews than magazine reviewers are giving it and if you have WiFi, which is what RW is all about, it won't take long to recoup the cost of the phone if you are on a $10 or $25/mo. service plan.
If you can't wait for the G then it's the X or a Defy XT. I got along fine with my Defy for over a year but it's 2.3.7 and it's an entry level phone, not a flagship. The G is far, far above it. But the Defy qualifies for tradeup. Don't know if the G will be included in the tradeup program since it's already a low cost unit even though it's not a low spec. phone.

Republic wireless has to bake in their hybrid calling anyway so you have to buy one of their phones. I've been seriously considering it. Unless you live in a major city tmo isn't an option anyway. Tmo doesn't even exist where I live or anywhere for 4+ hours.

No idea. Can you do so with Sprint Moto Xs'? I would imagine it would be the same. I plan on actually using Republic Wireless' service.
And just my opinion: You shouldn't be taking advantage of the low price they are offering just to take it to another service. These little guys are trying to get a good thing up and running, you shouldn't cheat them like that.

No, you can't:

Agreed, but there are a ton of penny pinchers out there who don't care about screwing the system since they don't have enough money themselves.

I was kinda toying around with the idea of getting a RW Moto X and seeing how it was for a month. My only holdback with RW though is what if they go under in a few months or something... am I left with a $300 brick? Or would they unlock the phones and let us reflash it to a different sprint MVNO or maybe even reflash the radio to a GSM provider? Not sure if thats even possible, CDMA and GSM probably use completely different hardware radios in the Moto X for all I know.

My problem is that I travel and that this phone doesn't seem to be useful for that. I like to stick local sims in my phones.
And the fact that other countries generally don't use cdma.

Yea I dont see this as being a great phone for traveling outside the US. They did say it would still work on wifi outside the US for calls/web/txt.

I was concerned about that situation too, but they have been around for a little while. Unless this Moto X deal breaks them, I expect them to be around for at least the "life" of the Moto X. If not, I expect they would at least unlock the phone for Sprint. Maybe I'm optimistic though.

Went ahead and made the purchase on kinda a spur of the moment decision (very uncharacteristic for me!). Was able to get the first month of service free with a coupon code, plus it has a 30 day return for any reason so I feel reasonably safe. I got the 4G plan just because sprint actually has 4G/LTE in my area, odly non of the other providers do.
Most of my work is around wifi though and of course I have wifi at home too so this should fit me fairly well. Iv been using a virgin mobile phone for the last 2 years and from what I read RW actually has roaming agreements with sprints partners for txt/voice so my coverage should be even better then virgin mobile (they don't have roaming agreements setup.)
Gota say im already liking RWs website a lot more then VMs. Can easily see usage history and various other account settings without having to jump through loops to actually get in. Will post back once I have the phone and let yall know how it goes :laugh:

Thats a fairly old article from 2011. From what I read they have since updated the plans to show unlimited txt/msging with 5GB of mobile data (if you have a mobile data plan)

They updated the terms of service, now you can use up to 5GB a month. If you go over they forgive you once every 6 months, go over twice and kick you off.

No. It's a CDMA phone. T-Mo and AT&T use GSM radios.
The SIM card is only used to give access to the carriers' LTE data networks. And because of the way the RW ROM is done, WiFi carrier with cell backup, not a cell carrier that you can do WiFi calls with over their cell data network, putting a different SIM into it to try to use another carriers network is a waste of time.
But you can try it for 30 days to see if you like it. Here are the gotchas:
