Hi I currently have the new g2x from tmobile and will probably be returning it today.(too many issues). The only other phone I want is the atrix so I'm thinking of canceling my tmo service and buying the atrix. Do you guys think it is worth it. I'll be paying about $10 more a month. How does every one like the atrix and att. Or maybe a comparison between att and tmo if someone has had both.
Thank you.

Also I had read that the boot loader is unlocked now us this true and if so how are the custom roms and will we be seeing some oc kernels chiming out?

Get it Unlocked
I'm with Tmobile now and using the Atrix unlocked. Try to go down that route if you have the resources to buy it outright. Otherwise, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix. The upcoming gingerbread update in the summer is only going to make it better. They've already ironed out most of the issues of early adopters with the new 4.1.83 update. The full power of this phone is yet to be unleashed.
i have an atrix on tmobile and i dont think its worth it honestly the phone has a lot of issues this is my second one from motorola and this one doesnt freeze as much but there is def a manufacturing defect there is a small section of my screen that doesnt work on either phone i had and im just living with it now becuz i dont want to send it in again and wait two weeks because it has been out getting fixed longer than i have had it I was thinking of trading mine for a g2x

Bootloader is still locked. You can root and "mod" it, but currently the bootloader is still locked down...

Also T-Mo has the better network. I'm sure you get better D/L speeds over there...

Thanks for the replies that was fast. Tmobile kinda sucks where I'm at. I work on an island where I get pretty spotty service and I live 200 feet from a cell tower where I get great reception but by supposed 4g speeds are 800k max which its pretty lame.

Also do you think we will ever see an unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Considering this is Motorola, no. Wait for the Galaxy S2.
I don't really like samsung phones. And I actually like motoblur. I also really likethe idea of the 2 docks. I saw that people have ubuntu running on these phones does that work with the docks? I also dint have the cash to buy it out right.

What a run on sentence, not a single period in that whole statement.
But on topic,
If you can return the phone and terminate service with no cost, then do it. But if you are to far into your contract and you are facing a termination fee, I would try to find a Atrix on craigslist or a trade and sell cell phone store. Yes the bootloader is locked, but there is people hard at work trying to find a solution. Yes you could wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2, but there is no guarantee it will be a better phone.

Isn't the radio hardware in the Atrix set up for AT&T frequencies, thus limiting data connection to 2G (Edge) speeds when used on T-Mobile?

I was also wondering this. And I will have to pay an early cancellation fee but with the g2x I got a partial upgrade and ended up paying $400 with a $50 rebate. it will cost me $200 to cancel service and,$99 for the atrix through radioshack. But the g2x is not great too many bugs and tons of backlight bleed not worth the $350 I payed with a contract extension.

OP, I'd say give it a try. Do you know of anyone who has AT&T where you live/work? I know every carrier is different in every location, so it may be worth it to give AT&T a try. I personally love the Atrix and have been with AT&T since they were Cingular. I know for my fiance, when she had T-Mobile, speeds were good right next to a tower, but it seemed like every time we traveled, she was roaming on AT&T Edge. This was true for where her parents live and where my parents live, too. At those locations, I was on AT&T 3G and speeds were great. So for us, AT&T has good 3G in more places than T-Mobile. But, everyone's mileage may vary. What is good for one person with regards to phone/network may not be good for the next person.
EDIT: oh, and you have a trial period with AT&T. If you aren't satisfied, return the Atrix and AT&T service and stick with what works for you.

i have no complaints about att, go for it. i would definitely make sure your own house is not an att dead zone though. dont forget to apply employer discounts for your monthly bill.
tmobile on the other hand, lots of problems.

I left Tmo on 04/10/11 for ATT. So far, so good. Love the Atrix since .83. Atrix is a suitable phone if you want android. iPhone is fine too. I'm still within the 30 grace period and I'm deciding to go with ATT for my mobile carrier.
My mom loves the the free mobile to mobile (no minutes used regardless of carrier).
I'm converting and I have no qualms. Haven't had any dropped calls (yet). I'd say go for ATT.
keep your g2x stay with tmo. its basically the same phone just a lg body instead of motorola. my buddy has the g2x. plus by next year all the networks tmo and att have will be shared and there will be new phones out. get your handset replaced if your having issues it may be hardware lemon. the atrix has its issues too no phone is without issues. youd just be trading one tegra based device for another and getting a slower network that costs more
The problem is the screen bleed on the g2x I've looked at several devices and they all have it. And our makes the screen look like crap. plus I've been missing way too many calls at work because bad reception. And I really want a tegra 2 over the other dual core processors.

I'm not sure if this is good or bad.
http://www.businessinsider.com/att-buys-t-mobile-2011-3
On one side I think it's great because it'll allow AT&T to better compete with Verizon and hopefully bring down prices. Right now Verizon has a huge hold on customers because of their fantastic coverage, but after this move AT&T won't be too far behind- maybe even a little ahead.
On the other side it's lowering the number of big players, so it's possible AT&T and Verizon with both decide to jack up their rates together instead of better competing for prices.
No offense but look around for the other 15+ topics about this.
Sent from my Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
I jumped ship at the right time. I couldn't be happier with the service. Never a dropped call, fast consistent data. Att was charging me the same price for what Verizon is and Verizon simply just offers more. I was with att for six years and finally had it. When I called they didn't even want to keep me. I think this is going to push some long time customers on both sides to leave and find a different provider.

Its good and bad.
The Bad:
ATT monopoly has just grown even bigger than it was before.
(from experience) With each take over it does, service quality gets worse
Higher prices on little service
The Good:
More towers
Now has a wider spectrum (frequency 1700 & 2100)
Now tmobile and att devices will truly be interchangeable.
I was going to move to tmoble on the 15th of may when att cuts my service due to me being on the legacy (mmode) network. That sux cause now they are one in the same. Thats BS and Verizon sux in my area as well as Sprint. The two best were... believe it or not Att and T-mobile.
That exact topic is why im typing this from a droid x kb on my dinc. I hate at&t. I hate what they do to thier customers, i especially hate the fact they raped what little sanity the gsm market had in it. T mobile. Once i heard about the buyout i called one of my buddies at verizon and he set me up. Its not all bad. Im on verizon now. No at&t for me.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
To be fair, this is all speculation at this point. It will be quite some time before we find out if AT&T will even be allowed to acquire T-mobile.
Its not speculation, att world never come out with this news if it was not a pretty sure deal. Yes, they do have some hurdles to jump, but I can guarantee att has been talking to various government regulators for quite some time so none of this is a surprise to anyone but us who are on the outside. Unfortunately for tmo customers like me I'll be dealing with the horrible customer service, limited internet, and higher prices that att has to offer in a few months

That would be one hell of a monopoly.
I think its good and bad. The bad now people have only one really ****ty service provider to choose from. The good maybe at&t will realize we need to fix some **** and might actually be something that others can say hey at&t is good. Now that verizon has the iphone at&t has only one edge and thats the atrix. However i guarantee you it wont be long until htc releases an atrix like product on big red.
Since at&t is buying out T-Mobile, just Google it I'm not posting links, is this the true end of our phones because at&t said all 3G phones will need to be upgraded to support their towers and speed they will provide. In addition what are everyone's thoughts on the matter?? It seems like we'll all min the USA have to buy new phones BC they probably wont do the upgrade for free xD
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
You don't have to change anything unless ATT drops 2G.
I don't think it will be the end of our phones the 3G upgrades may come over the air or we may have to go old school & actually have to get firmware upgrades in the shop. I don't really think T-Mobile is much slower than At&t, after all, T-Mobile pushed the GSM network in the US, which made everyone else play catch up, since GSM was already in the EU for several years prior. Anyway, as long as we have XDA & the great people giving us Froyo & Gingerbread for our G1/Dreams & MT3G(which we were never meant to have in the 1st place), we will never be too far behind...I hope.
Just my 2 cents...
AT&T motto: If you can't beat `em, buy `em!
Its not necessarily a software issue because At&t said that themselves that all 3G phones will eventually have to be replaced to handle the new network.. AKA moving everyone to 4G and more expensive plans lol..
If they're going to pay for the upgrades themselves im all fine and for it bring on the new phones for development, and they keep our plans i will be extremely happy!
But if we have to get new phones and new contracts a lot of people will probably drop them. I know i cant get the deal i have now ANY where else for as keep.. Unlimited data, texts and 750 shared mins bt two phones for 100 bucks a month. not bad in my opinion.
3g phones are supposed to fail. Get a 4g phone. I heard T-Mobile customers will get iPhones somewhere but wouldn't count on that coming to pass. I'll get the pyramid if it hits T-Mobile in may like reported by T-Mobile news. Just ride the train and see what happens. If u get robbed bail out. My 2¢ anyway

I wet into a AT&T store today and there data line for "unlimited" is $45 a month with out tethering it was around $65-$70 with tethering (guys at the store were as helpfull as a bricked phone and didnt tell me much), (i currently pay $40 with tethering) ontop of your standared plans... to get a plan like yours (also mine) would cost us around $150 or more, im just hopin that we will be able to keep our plans how we have them due to the "grandfathering" law, not sure if it is covered from a buy out though...
Something for us all to look into i guess and see what we come up with
I got a feeling that the govt isn't going to allow it. There seems to be a lot of media attention lately as to how it will hurt consumers. Mergers like this are not necessarily a done deal.

It is when companies own the Supreme Court.
So I am about to get booted off of my parents plan (college kid) come may. Would it be a smart option to buy a tmobile plan right now hoping that their prices wont increase with the potential merger? I have heard their plans are cheaper..
I am using an unlocked g1 on at&t right now- and I havent had much problem with at&t- I think all cell phones companies are low grade scammers... I do not use any data, just wifi, and probably text 500/month, talk 500/month..
thought?
I talked to a few tmobile people and they all say that the plan you currently have will remain the same price IF the merge happens
stick wit tmobile. tmobile will still carry out their prices. the two companies merged. which is great cuz HTC and other phone companies wont have to make exclusive phones for Tmobile etc. it will be available to both companies. so we get benefit of the new phones.
If noticed on alot of 3g and 4g phones are already set up for at&t aswell as t-mobile so im really not seeing a issue with the buy out except maybe a new sim card.

Tmobile sim cards suck I will move to a att one myself. I never had a problem with them but tmobile ive gone through three in less then a year.
at and t owns us and i hate it
With the merger no one needs to upgrade phones. If ppl read tmo's news, at&t pretty much just wants tmo's 4g capable towers and servers. If the merger Goes threw at&t will pretty much be selling world phones (phones that's will support tmos 17 & 21 hundred 3/4g bands and att bands).. all in all they just want the real 4g capable towers tmo has ..
PS ... my 2cents... the merger ain't good for no one.. monopoly ain't good! (Damn bush for reallowing monopolyzation)

My spring contract ends on January 31st of this year and lately I've been wanting to get out of sprint and switch to Verizon. Sprint has slow 3g service, occasional dropped calls in my area of living , and they don't have phones that can compete with Verizon's (IMO). Now I can renew my contract by buying a new phone obviously but I want the new galaxy nexus on Verizon and I can't wait till sprint gets theres otherwise I won't have a cell phone to use for who knows how long. Even then Verizon has amazing 3g compared to sprints. What do y'all get think? What other options are available or what would be the smartest way to go?
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G
Depends on where you live and how the service is, for most people, it would SEEM that Verizon is far better than Sprint, also T Mobile is good in most cities, etc. You'll pay a little more on VZW but it may be worth it, never had any issues with signal, etc.
T Mobile is definitely best price wise and if you're in a city, I hear nothing but good things.

I have used every major carrier out there and Verizon has worked best for me. They are a little more expensive but they are the only carrier that gives me 4 bars where i live and i can watch video's on 3g here. Everyone else i had dropped calls and slow speeds but i'm sure every area is a little different.
Just my $.02 worth

If you "been wanting to get out of sprint and switch to Verizon", then it sounds like you answered your own question. In the end it will likely come down to $20-$30 per month difference in most circumstances, so if that's not a problem for you, then why not get what you really want (IE Nexus on Verizon)?
Edit, didn't see your follow up post, enjoy your new phone
Did you get the nexus s?

Not worth the cost difference to me, especially with my hospital discount.
Do you want to switch just because it's something shiny and new, or do you want to switch because Verizon legitimately offers something you need and can't get with sprint?
Yes I just bought the galaxy nexus and Verizon legitimately offers me what sprint doesn't and that's full bars everywhere I'm at (work home and shopping centers) And the service is 3x faster compared to sprint in all Of those areas.

I'd go with Verizon. It all really depends on where you are, but if you get great service with Verizon, go with them. I'm an AT&T user myself but my roommate has Verizon and says he loves it. Great service, decent prices, and awesome customer support.
Kinda surprised OP stayed on Sprint.
Verizon all the way

Stay with Sprint. No throttling, no data caps. With Network Vision coming into fruition within the next few years, speeds will improve. In my area, I was getting less than 500kbps on 3G. Now I get almost 2 Mbps on 3G and 4G is 6+Mbps (East Bay Area in California). I use Youtube a lot and I'm able to stream videos in HQ on my phone with no lag or buffering on 3G.
Once you get on other carriers, you quickly find how fast you hit your data caps. Last month I used 6 GB of data.
Go with Verizon
I know LTE speeds are not achieved with international SIM-Free S3. I can trade-off that one feature for many other things. I use Non-smartphone plan for 15$ vs 25$(LTE) a month which is pretty cool with unlimited data and i get speed up to 1.5Mbps(which is ok as i have wifi availability everywhere). Importantly the hardware, there is a possibility of Krait processor coming in for LTE handsets(rumor as heard). I don't want to take chances of losing Wolfson DAC this time(US LTE variants might have a different chipset).
Share your thoughts.
I am getting the international version because when I got my skyrocket I sold it right away profiting $500. I got the phone for FREE.
That being said, I live in the LA area and there is 4G LTE. But I have a limited data plan anyways and always have WiFi at work and at home (fios).
I'd rather have the Wolf, and Exynos over the S4 as the Exynos blows the S4 and Tegra 3 out of the water.

Agreed, but if all you're getting is 1.5Mbps, then I would scream bloody murder. I'm in Austin, TX and using international SGS2 on AT&T and get up to 7.5Mbps...!
I am on that plan and get avg 3-5mbs with mine. I have gotten 7-8mbs a few times and 12mbs at 1AM.
I just used 109GB on that plan and not a peep out of AT&T. LOL
I am going with international, if the ATT version ends up looking better or for some reason have better specs, than I will just buy that on contract and sell the international version. Not really worried about lte.
Also now that the ATT htc x one is the only version with a locked bootloader I am very hesitant to wait for the SIII ATT version.

I am getting close to 3MPS DL (provisioned on MediaNet, not Smartphone) As long as I can stream movie trailers without hiccups Its all good. Thats about the only time we use Carrier data while at a restruant deciding what movie to see...We have not used an ATT branded phones since the Captivate and won't be buying any soon except to sell.
We are saving over $600 a year on two smart phones. Plus the sale of the upgrades. It's an easy decision to buy the International versions on so many levels. even IF ATT had the IMEIs and billed for a Smart Phone in whcih case we go to Straight Talk. We don't need LTE for anything .
And the Wolfson DAC AFTER Supercurio does his magic is well worth the price of entry. But like all of our International devices so far SGS IIs and a Note, we buy used. Don't need a warranty as I void it anyway rooting and ROMming...LOL
Thee should be used ones becoming available in a couple months. In the mean time let the early adopters discover the issues and the Developers fix em. I can wait..........I think........or not.
Yea I choose to get the unlocked international version to ream att. For $15 I get unlimited data and I usually pull 6 down and 2 up. I can stream netflix, hulu, rdio and tunein radio without worrying about data usage.

You likely have the right settings. If you are not provisioned for a "Smart Phone" from ATT you will be on the MediaNet plan and your DL speeds will vary a lot and never really go that high,
. Mine go from 1.5 to 3mps. I have never had issues with streaming though when I needed.

I 'd say 4 months after the first ones are shipped and $200+ less Used. I haven't bought a new International phone yet. Warranty iffy in the US and I fully intend to void it anyway rooting and ROMing it. May as well buy an already rooted device from someone reliable. Paid Less than $450 for the SGS IIs and Less than $600 for the Note. Those savings alone goes a long way toward the SGS III.
All I hope is that they will release both a LTE and non-LTE version in the US, like the SGS2.
Wishful thinking.
I'm getting international version and I am on t mobile. I have HSPA+ right now on my phone with them but honestly... Edge can still download stuff.
I'm a little upset that it won't support HSPA but I can live without it. More and more places that my friends and I frequent are putting up free WiFi so I feel like in a year's time WiFi will be so abundant that getting LTE devices won't be such a big deal.

To each their own.
Isn't this an industry shocker: http://www.republicwireless.com/moto-x
With their $5, $10, $25 or $40 plans, it is hard to resist the Moto-X for $299.

Keep in mind that they will be selling the Sprint variant. This phone will not work on other networks as good as it does on any Sprint network provider. LTE will only work on Sprint. HSPA should work on other networks since they share the same frequencies, but whenever you don't have that, you need CDMA as fallback. End result is a really crappy coverage unless you live in a metro area with good Sprint HSPA.

i'm still quite excited about this, sprint will have LTE in my area by the end of the year (so they say).
this seems like such a good deal, has anyone used republic wireless?
would sprint moto x roms work on this?

I think you will have to check with RW. They have to install their special hybrid software to make this Wi-Fi calling to work. If you put a new ROM, the hybrid software may not be compatible. Check with them.

I am skeptical. $299 is < 1/2 the price everyone else is chargin, plus they make next to no money on the service... so where are they making money?
Now maybe if UNICEF got into the cell phone business.... </JoeDirt>

We will find out in November.

I'm curious if there's any way to flash this to use on ATT or T-Mobile. I'm sure it's locked either in the rom or elsewhere keeping it only on the sprint network though. Could anyone shine some light upon these chances?

Republic Wireless rides on the Sprint network, so you're likely limited to Sprint. You could probably maybe put an ATT or T-Mo sim and get voice, and maybe HSPA+ on ATT like the Verizon X can, but I doubt T-Mo would be above EDGE speeds.

This. I was excited until you brought me back to reality.
While custom may not be an option as xposed becomes more powerful it may not matter.

So for people using Sprint would we be able to root, flash a sprint rom, and then be able to activate it on Sprint? I would love to get this phone without having to pay $600 or renewing my Sprint contract.

The RW site says it will be contact free. Buying at RW and activating on Sprint may be possible. It is unknown for now. But that option would be great for people on Sprint.
EDIT: Sorry for the bad news. Sprint will not allow this Moto-X on their spectrum of the Network: http://liliputing.com/2013/09/cant-use-299-republic-wireless-moto-x-sprint.html

Not to rain on people's parades, but Republic is not on the list to even have an unlockable bootloader.

I would imagine that's also why it's so cheap.
So root is a maybe, but putting a different carrier's image on it is a pipe dream.

I think that's illegal on CDMA devices anyways. Not sure. I also wonder if these Republic Wireless phones will have any resale value? $25-$40 per month is enticing though.

Why would you want to use this on sprint? Use it on RW and save like $30 a month....

That would be a good point to argue. But one scenario can be that somebody is stuck in Sprint contract and have a sub par phone. In that case paying $299 for moto x is a steal. In any case, if the speeds on the $40 RW plan is similar to Sprint speeds, then RW plan is the clear choice.

I'm currently paying a hair over $100 on Sprint a month right now for service plus insurance. I'm strongly considering paying the etf and going to RW
