[Q] SIM only no contract carrier that supports the G2? - G2 and Desire Z General

I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):

I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk

AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

According to Wiki, Simple uses T-Mobile and AT&T. Interesting, I wonder how that works, since those 2 carriers don't use the same 3G frequencies.

Its who I use. And I like them. Me and my wife are currently paying a $100 a month. Me with data, her without. It would be $120 if she had it as well.

Walmart is starting a something called Family Mobile. Supposed to run on Tmobile's network. Month to month.

If you can't pay or don't wanna pay the bill that comes with the phone of YOUR choice then you prob don't deserve the phone. That's my opinion.... Just saying. If you really wanna save money port your number to google voice and remove your sms plan and drop your minutes down. Be creative and you can save money.

is your mms on simple mobile fully functional?

Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

Snarky, and rude. Your comment is null to this question thread. I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.

I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

I've decided!
Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

4G unlimited web?

Why is it not illegal to advertise and have us pay for 4G service that most of us don't receive? My bill says 4G not internet. I believe that is misleading. Yes I understand the service might not be available in all areas, but we are being forced to actually pay more for the same service.

You're not forced to do anything and nobody owes anything to you. You pay as much as everybody else does. Don't like what you get with T-mobile - feel free to leave and get raped by any other carrier
Verizon - don't know what they got but it's expensive last time I checked.
Sprint $10 additional premium internet fee
AT&T - don't even get me started with them.
You wouldn't have to worry about none of this if you bough a JitterBug
You don't actually pay more for the data plan. They just call it 4G internet. It's the same price as the regular unlimited data plan. It's marketing spiff.
You can always call in to loyalty and see if you can't get the preferred android web. $20. Or go to another provider. You chose T-mo. You chose the MT4G. If you didn't want the data plan, they why did you get a smartphone?????
Remember to get the deal you have to agree to the $10 price hike. All I'm saying is they label it 4G and tout about it all the time and most of the tmo network is still on 2G. I was told to go and harass the local tmo manager about the slow network. That they actually have input on network upgrades. You know how they were suppose to change the tier frequencies over? Guess what. The government is trying not to release those now. Which in turn keeps us from moving up just to 3G. The courts finally ordered mississippi to release them. I can't really blame tmo for that. I get good service and respect from my local tmo store to make me stay. I even protested them when they tried to fire him.

What hike? I'm on $25 unlimited web/400 text/mms plan and have been since I got G1, same thing with my wife who picked up G2. Price for new customers is higher, they have a choice and they can go anywhere else if they think they can find a better deal.
Existing customers grandfather plans, you just have to ask for it. Or, you can buy your phone outright and not have a data plan with it at all or just buy cheaper plan.
But in any case, everyone has a choice and if you think t-mobile does not fit your lifestyle or too expensive or has bad coverage - you have 14 days to change your mind and return the phone/cancel service.
Not exactly what I was trying to get across. They sell the 4G phone and make you upgrade to get the good price. The bill it as 4G unlimited web! That is considered fraud. We don't have anything but 2G here. It really has nothing to do with money at all! All I want is what they say I'm paying for. 4G! Actually I will settle on 3G.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
That's how they can subsidize that phone and sell it to your for $50 or $150, because you're paying for the data plan.
It's pointless....
LOL Its funny to see a thread like this, this is pretty much like us EVO users who complained about the $10 premium data add-on in the summer.
I'm just here to say that that grass isn't greener anywhere with this issue, just live with it or don't buy a "4G" capable phone.
Sprint & T-Mobile are the only two so far that are at least keeping 4G unlimited, vs. future AT&T & VZW's tietered (overage trap) solutions.

lol how ignorant are you? U get the phone for $150 when it retails for 500 or so... do you think tmobile is just giving their phones away at garage sale prices? you will pay for that phone over a length of time and increased data is one way they can do it... if they are only selling that phone with that certain data plan then be ready to pay their premium prices if u want that phone...
besides that, why would you buy a 4g phone and complain about not getting 4g when you do not even live somewhere that has 4g? come down to phoenix or head over to NY and you can have all the 4g you want, I assure you that you will get it and will get a little more what you pay for there...
anyway, my mom just picked this phone up yesterday, was 130 with her upgrade and buy 1 get one free assuming you had 2 lines to upgrade with... it was 15 for 200mb of data or 30 for unlimited (5gb) of data and they had a promotion for new data customers could get unlimited for 20 a month...
I really have no idea what you are ranting about... nothing they are doing is illegal... you have 4g capabilities, you just cannot use it where you live... tough luck buddy...
Just to shut this guy up here -
T-Mobile have 2 4G phones, the MT4G and the G2. Unlimited data plans for them are the same as you would pay on the Vibrant, the Cliq and the Behold II. What extra charge are you seeing?

This is just funny. I payed through the nose for Verizon service and i constantly shop around to see if other carriers are more reasonable.
I have unlimited everything on two phones and I'm about equal to what I was paying at Verizon with no data. My speeds are way faster for data than any of my friends on ATT, Verizon, Sprint.
They'll throttle your speeds if you go over 5gb I think.... Just stop tethering and playing Starcraft lol.
All the "4G Unlimited Web" means is what Watson (T-Mobile 's computer system) calls the internet plan for the MT4G and the G2.
It's a billing code that is associated to the phone, and is the same exact thing as the Android Unlimited Web plan ($30/$25 if grandfathered in; for non-MyTouchs) and the MyTouch Unlimted Web ($30; for pre-G2/MT4G MyTouch phones).
The regular unlimited web plan ($10/mo) which you are probably considering as being much cheaper is for non-smartphones. Android phones are extremely data-intensive. They are constantly updating email, weather, etc., as compared to regular phones which only connect when the user chooses to. As such, I think T-Mobile has every right to charge a little more for a phone that constantly uses bandwidth. Besides, we're lucky. T-Mobile is pretty much the cheapest carrier for unlimited web, and also the only one that doesn't FORCE you to have internet.
Like someone else said, if you've been with T-Mobile for a long time (more than 2yrs and the longer the better) you can generally get CS to change your internet to the "MyTouch Preferred" internet. It's the same thing as the 4G Unlimited Web, but is $20/mo instead.
As for the legality of the plan name, you still get the 4G speeds if you go into a 4G zone. So no, it's in no way illegal to post that. You aren't paying more and they aren't forcing you to pay for the internet (don't want it? Call CS and cancel it. Heck, you may even get someone nice who will give you a month or two free...)
On a side note, if you think it's too expensive, but just have to have internet on your phone, get the cheaper 200MB plan for the MyTouch. You still get the guaranteed 4G speed, but just get cut off at 200MB (but I really wouldn't suggest it)
Hopefully everything I told you help put everything in perspective.
I'm currently on the myTouch unlimited + 400 text for $24.99. Will I "NOT" get HSPA+(4g speeds) without the 4g data plan??? Only network I get is HSDPA which is 3g. Any input is appreciated.

[Q] The best pay as you go in US

Hi everybody!
Looking for some advice from US members.
I'm gonna travel in US for almost a month: couple weeks at Hawaii and couple weeks for LA, SF and NY.
Could somebody suggest a best pay as you go plan for this trip not for calls but for unlimited data or something looks like unlimited. I got Nexus S 3G. And is there this roaming prices or it doesn't matter where you actually is in US?
PS: Surely I can look through all the networks websites but I just thought that locals should know this and the answer won't take much time.
Thanks!
T-Mobile USA offers a no-contract package for US$30 a month that gives you 100 minutes talk, unlimited (to the US) SMS and unlimited 3g data (speeds throttled to 2g after 5gb use).
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
Nationwide coverage, roaming included. You might have to pay the activation fee (usually US$35) but that's about the only option in the US that is GSM, works with any unlocked phone, and offers what you're looking for.
Thanks a lot! That's what I needed
Cheers!

This won't work for a Nexus S though (Boost is CDMA I believe)... and the shrinkage wouldn't happen for a long time. I'm on the $30 a month T-Mobile one and it works great! Make sure you have the right radios for your phone to work on T-Mobile though. Also, the plan does come with 4G (at least if you consider HSPA+ 4G...). Otherwise, AT&T will give you 500 MB on prepaid for $25 a month and you can combine that with a few options for text and talk. The only problem with the T-Mobile deal is that it is online only (unless you get it at Walmart), so you will have to go a few days without service while you wait for your sim to arrive.

IS there some special radio required?
AT&T with 25$ for 500 Mb is not even close to T-Mobile's offer.
Probably I have to order sim few days prior arrival. Does Walmart always have these sim's in stock?
What I didn't get is how to buy this plan. There is no option to buy simcard with this plan. So do I have to buy just simcard without a plan than activate it and choose a plan? If so why I can't do it by buing sim at tmobile office?
There are Walmart stores all across the country. When you buy it there they'll give you the activated sim right there in store. US GSM carriers toss the sim in free when you buy the plan... part of the activation fee. And no special radios required. T-Mobile uses the international 3g bands. Its at&t that uses weird frequencies

You can never be grandfathered in. When you upgrade your phone to LTE and sign a new contract it will have any new restrictions and price changes. Hopefully it will not happen but if it does they will still need to be cheaper than the competitors or their coverage issues will cause people to switch.
You can possibly just buy the phone at full price and keep your plan. Not sure how they are gonna handle the LTE guess we may find out in Jan.

Yes until your contract runs out and then they are free to change your plan or you sign a new contract with the new plan. If you upgrade riiiiiiighhhht before they change the plans then you can get almost 2 years out of it but doubt they would activate LTE and start selling LTE phones without the rates in place.

I don't think Sprint will get rid of unlimited data. Sprint has been advertising unlimited data for months and it is definitely a customer catcher, I mean just look at their latest commercial.
Them upgrading to LTE would simply make it even better .

Let's face it, a lot of these "analyst" are just giving random thoughts based on speculation. We won't know until we get an official word, but I seriously doubt that sprint will be cutting unlimited.
Sprint has already officially said their network is handling all of it's users and not being stressed, especially with the iPhone not even touching the current 4G network, let alone LTE.

Honestly speaking, will this really do anything? At&t reserves the right to throttle or stop your data service as they see fit. Shady and screwed up, I know, but it is defined in the contract we signed when we all got service from them.
My data isn't throttled, but I don't actually use more than 3GB a month.

Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
Well we know how these companies tend to suck our hard earned money.
We have to sign a contract and still limit our usage.
I suggest move to another network which have a better data plan from AT&T.

That only works if your device actually has the bands for T-Mobile and AT&T packed in there. Software can't change hardware.

Only if you don't have a grandfathered plan. I've never been throttled on TMo. I routinely use over 10GB of data per month including tethering.

T-Mobile does have 5GB and 10GB options that now include FREE TETHERING! Yes, you're still throttled after the 5 or 10GBs of data. But.....5GB for 30$ including tethering beats AT&T easily. 10GB for 60$ including tethering as well.... (referencing classic plan pricing here) is not bad either.
Only Verizon ATM beats it with Their double data promo (example: 10GB for 5GB price of 50$). That's a promo, not everyday pricing either.
Oh, yeah....NO TETHERING INCLUDED on Verizon either.....

I have no quality issues with T-Mobile. Fast HSPA+ speeds plus four bars (68-72dBm). I'll admit outside major metropolitan areas T-Mobile is lacking, but for the majority of us living in those major metropolitan areas....T-Mobile is the better deal.

The person I responded to only asked about data throttling. You can grab a promo plan from them anyway that includes tethering, just as babydoll suggested.

I've never had issues with them either. They cover most of my routes in South Louisiana to my customers' homes. They've recently expanded their 3G coverage as well. I was pretty excited to see be able to stream last.fm again in some out of the way places.

Straight Talk BYOD!!!!!

Didn't know if this had been posted but ST just into'd new bring your own device plans! Now we can take our unlocked GSII's and use them on ATT network for $45 unlimited talk/text/web! Obviously this is not a big deal for those that live in Tmobiles 3g/4g footprint but it is for me since I don't.
I wonder if their data speeds are like simple mobile

What speeds are you getting with simple mobile? Here are some reported speeds from users on ST byod.--> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1737642-Post-Your-Straight-Talk-Speedtests
Oh I'm not on simple mobile I just remember a thread about their 3g speeds being under 200kbps. Haven't heard much good or bad with straight talk
Is there data throttle caps?

Generally they begin capping around 2gigs. Not bad though for $45. Only reason this appeals to me is I can't get T-Mobile 3/4g service but I can get AT&T hspda service. As far as I know, this is the cheapest unlimited plan that runs on AT&T's network.

It does, unlimited minutes and messages, 4G with speeds throttled after the first 2G - but it's only available as a family plan: 2 phones, 2 plans, 2 x $50 / mo.
Great if you've got a family member who's interested, and you both live in the t-m ob footprint.
The same plan's available BYOD for $60/mo, which is a lot more when you consider that the family plan includes phones.

I'm on the T-Mobile 'fringes', so, yeah, this is interesting.
I can use my T989 on ST? Is there an unlocker?
Got a link to the ST BYOD plan(s)?
Thanks!
Might be good add a back up
I used Simple Mobile's $40 per month plan and data speeds were horrible. It was so bad I switched to their $60 unlimited. Then this past weekend T-mo had that free phone giveaway thing for new customers, so I ended up signing up for the $60 plan for 2GB of data. Same price as Simple and I only really use about 2GB per month anyway, so it works well for me plus a free Galaxy S 2 is always cool with me.
The one thing about t-mo I really like is that if you call them there are a lot more options than what you see on the web. For example, I use Google Voice so I don't need SMS. That cuts $10 out of the bill right there, but you have to call to get them to take that out, can't do it via the web I don't think.
When is the Straight Talk SIM plan coming out?! Will they do 4G? God, I hope so, $45 bucks for all the **** they offer is a STEAL, especially if you use it with a smartphone... Unlike I am doing with GoPhone ATM

I hadn't realized there were call-only deals. I'll have to call them. No idea if they're flexible on their BYOD plans (I don't need SMS either)

the 200mb is 4g, but its unlimited internet access just slows to edge. but the $60 optioin is better, comes w/2gb of 4g speeds then edge. About $64.80 after taxes on monthly 4g plan.

Knowing AT&T, if you use Straight Talk, the data speeds are probably capped at 512kbps.
Didn't work for me. I cannot even use SMS with their unlimited $45 plan. Data is down as well. I'm on Straighttalk AT&T SIM card. Customer support reset the options on their side twice, but it didn't help. I tried two different phones with this SIM card to no avail.
texts should be working but for data, did you put in the new APNs? Data wont just work if you just insert the SIM card in since AT&T and ST have different APN's
