If you use At&t, I need a minute from you - Networking

We have bunch of thread about Throttle Data. If you don't like getting throttle please sign this petition and spread the word in our xda community. We need to get more people sign this petition faster so we can resolve the issue. And tell At&t to F*** Off because i hate when I pay for unlimitated data and only get about 3.5 to 4 GB with full speed. SO PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION HERE.

Honestly speaking, will this really do anything? At&t reserves the right to throttle or stop your data service as they see fit. Shady and screwed up, I know, but it is defined in the contract we signed when we all got service from them.

My data isn't throttled, but I don't actually use more than 3GB a month.

.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.

Well we know how these companies tend to suck our hard earned money.
We have to sign a contract and still limit our usage.
I suggest move to another network which have a better data plan from AT&T.

This wouldn't do anything. It's obvious no one likes data throttling.

Move to T-mobile Switched from ATT and not regretting. Everything unlimited for the same price I paid at ATT for only 500 mins and 2 GB plan

The Big red did the same to me.Not even 2gb, but .7gb! I am not sure if I can sign being on the big red/ AT&T 15 unlimited non-smartphone plan.

Only if you don't have a grandfathered plan. I've never been throttled on TMo. I routinely use over 10GB of data per month including tethering.

In Germany every provider only guarantees for 300MB - 1GB without being throttled to 64kbit/s while the plan states "unlimited"
You can get 4GB from T-Mobile if you pay extra...

well you can always change apn and have hspa+ speed on At&t better than sprint and t-mobile.

That only works if your device actually has the bands for T-Mobile and AT&T packed in there. Software can't change hardware.

T-Mobile does have 5GB and 10GB options that now include FREE TETHERING! Yes, you're still throttled after the 5 or 10GBs of data. But.....5GB for 30$ including tethering beats AT&T easily. 10GB for 60$ including tethering as well.... (referencing classic plan pricing here) is not bad either.
Only Verizon ATM beats it with Their double data promo (example: 10GB for 5GB price of 50$). That's a promo, not everyday pricing either.
Oh, yeah....NO TETHERING INCLUDED on Verizon either.....

I have no quality issues with T-Mobile. Fast HSPA+ speeds plus four bars (68-72dBm). I'll admit outside major metropolitan areas T-Mobile is lacking, but for the majority of us living in those major metropolitan areas....T-Mobile is the better deal.

I've never had issues with them either. They cover most of my routes in South Louisiana to my customers' homes. They've recently expanded their 3G coverage as well. I was pretty excited to see be able to stream last.fm again in some out of the way places.

Data throttles on T-mobile

Hello fellow xda members! I think many of you know about T-Mobile's data throttling and what a nuance it may be. I would like to hear your thoughts on this and even possible solutions to this. Thanks!

It's better than cutting you off completely like other providers do. They begin throttling after 5gb on unlimited plans... everyone else will cut you off completely at 5gb.

Not sure how these providers get away with selling these as 'unlimited' plans, when they throttle or disconnect your data connection at a certainl level. I understand thet 5gb is rather generous, and that the terms and conditions of most providers specify the data cap in the fine print, but they still go around advertising these plans as unlimited data plans when they're technically not.

I agree... I think some have stopped calling them unlimited plans recently, though. At least T-Mobile's really is unlimited, even though they throttle after 5gb.... it's better than getting completely cut off. I wish I could afford an unlimited data plan myself, but unfortunately I'm stuch with prepaid t-mobile right now. I can buy a web daypass for $1.50, which is technically unlimited data for 24 hours, but they begin throttling after 5mb

video steaming and tethering. i think if you get throttled, you better off setting your phone to use edge only. edge is faster than the throttled 3G/4G.

Ok yes having a 5GB soft cap on a data plan that is advertised and labeled "UNLIMITED" is a bummer and some what deceiving. And yes the throttling sucks, I mean at throttled speeds T-Mobile might as well actually cut you data completely. I mean really, those kinds of speeds are totally usless to a smartphone user. So can you really say throttling is any different than completely cutting off your data conection. Also I heard that T-Mobile actually uses your phone some how to acheive the throttling. If this is true T-Mobile is using equipment that does not belong to them to control their network. I bet you will not find T-Mobile asking your permission to do this anywhere in the T&C statement or your contract.
I know I will catch flack for this but I feel it needs to be said. Do we not have enough threads in the T-Mobile forums about this subject? This is XDA this really has no place here.

Sprint "capping" data?

My cousin's boyfriend just bought 2 verizon stores and he is telling me that Sprint caps ur data limit to 5 GB a month, then limits ur download/upload after that limit (to like 2G speeds). Can anyone confirm this?
I know T-Mobile does, but never heard of Sprint, ATT, or Verizon doing it.

No, they do not.
Sprint only caps data to 5GB for the laptop computer modem cards. There is no cap policy for phone data.
However, if you're using super-huge amounts of data, like 20-50gb, some people have gotten letters asking them to lower that or they'll get relieved of their contract/service. I've used 10gb in a month before with no reprecussions (on SERO). It's considered "adversely affecting the network" (outlined in the contract -- every carrier has this clause).
they do not cap phone data.

They were just rumors back from the SERO threads.
I think the people in question were more in the 50-100GB range.
Over the last 18 months, I have consistently used 10Gb-15Gb a month and haven't had any speed issues with 4G where I work or 3G where I live. Haven't gotten any letters, either. Back when I had one of their 3G data cards, when it came time to re-up my contract, they took the 'unlimited' off their data card plan and put a 5Gb cap. Didn't effect the phone plans at all, though.

Sprint originally marketed the mobile broadband units as unlimited. I bought one in 2007. At some point they decided 5gb would be the limit. I refused to re-up just so that I could keep the unlimited terms. When I bought my Epic in October I knew I wouldn't need it anymore and told Sprint I was killing it off.
The rep even recognized that I was still on true unlimited and asked me if I was sure I wanted to drop it. i told him I would just use the phone for access. So of course he tried to sell me the hotspot app. Thanks, but no thanks.
There has been a bit of press on this topic because analysts are expecting all carriers to follow att's move in this area. My take: ATT means Absolutely Terrible Throughput.

[Q] SIM only no contract carrier that supports the G2?

I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):
I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

is your mms on simple mobile fully functional?
Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.
I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.

Would really to hear of your experiences on it...specifically data speed performance....especially if you've used BOTH smartphone and dumbphone arrangements with ATT on this device.
Thanks very much.
Also!...the dumbphone plans have 'unlimited' data (s'why I'm trying this vs the 4G I'd be capped at)..
I know I have to use data with caution, but do you think that 4G total could be used (worst case) without red flags going up with the ATT 'Man'? !

I had the dumbphone unlimited $15/mo plan briefly OP and I can tell you that it works.
I went back to the unlimited smartphone $30/mo b/c I was grandfathered after practically imploring them to put me back on it b/c they kept (at&t csr) that I had been warned that if I switched to the dumbphone unlimted plan I would never be given a chance to be put back on the smartphone unlimted.
But anyways, it does work and at one point I got like 7.3Mbps down which is real HSPA+ speeds faster then HSPA+ 7.2, which the GSII is capable in theory of HSPA+ 21 so even on the medianet dumbphone unlimted plan I think with enhanced backhaul you'll be able to get wonderful data speeds on a dumbphone plan on your Galaxy SII.

Some people who've moved to a 4G plan said it improved speed. Others have said it hasn't. It seems pretty inconsistent. With AT&T's network itself being inconsistent, it's really hard to say if there's a true difference using different APNs and a full 4G plan. Once the Attain comes out we can see what its users are getting as a comparison of what's possible.

No need to wait for the attain to test the data speeds, the Infuse and Atrix are already H+ devices.

Someone already posted that putting an Infuse SIM in an SGS2, side-by-side, the SGS2 got faster speeds (for them). I'd guess the radio and APN's are going to be different in the Attain. Maybe we can learn some stuff from its settings once it comes out since it'll be optimized for AT&T's network. Including some of the *#X#* settings.

Is MetroPCS unlocking phones?

Hey guys, I was searching the interwebs for some general unlocking info and I found this from a couple years ago. Pretty interesting I think, what happened to this? Are they actually reflashing phones in-store? As far as the "gradual opening of the US wireless market"...it's gradual indeed

MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

Interesting. So are GSM data standards are more inter-compatible between carriers than with CDMA? (I had to look up what 1xRTT is =) )

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.
MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.
Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.
Check here if you don't believe me:

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

They are an MVNO of T-Mobile. To be honest, I would just go with T-Mobile's monthly 4G plans instead of Simple but to each his own. Some people swear by them.

I'm about to go to sprint for the unlimited data. Att is going to start throttling me on mine. I've just all these GSM phones laying around and would like to use them.

It won't be unlimited for long...WImax sucks too....but whatever makes you happy.
I'd say take Verizon up on their double data promo if your going CDMA

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.
I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

Ahhh I see. Still too little for me. I hook my phone to my tv and watch Netflix, the news. Play games and such. I'm a data hog I know.
