Sprint is cancelling my service

So, Sprint called me today to inform me that they are dropping my service because of excessive data roaming. They are not charging me an ETF and they are giving my 250$ deposit back. I am not upset about that, I am upset about not being able to use my Evo and the community that comes with it. I will miss the HTC XDA community if I have to go to Motorola or LG or SE.
My only choice when it comes to coverage is Verizon. The only phone that seems to be on the horizon is the Bionic that comes with LTE. I don't want the Droid X or Droid 2 because LTE is about to launch and would enjoy to have it, along with that sweet sweet dual core. Bionic seems to be the best bet, but I remember hearing something LG dropping a phone soon too.
My main question is, what Android phones are coming out this year with LTE and dual core? I don't mind being without phone service for a few months waiting.

Of course.
It wasn't really excessive it was just that the majority of it was roaming. I only get Verizon coverage at work where I use my phone the most (when it comes to data, have WiFi at home) so I used the PRL hack to be on it all the time. I heard about them being upset about this and I was expecting at least a warning but they are straight up dropping my service.
My average data usage was 4 to 5GB on roaming with around 300-400mb on Sprint for the past 4-5 months.

Noob question...how do you know you are recieving roaming data? I have been complaining about horrible data speeds and told them i want to cancle with no fee. They said they basically base that off of calls dropped.and not data. I uae my phone minimal for calling but data is another story and it is horribly slow.

Verizon has a HTC android coming out soon, it's suppose to be a really good one. Sorry I cannot remember the name of it, but when I get a chance I will post it back in here with a link for you. Sorry to hear about Sprint. Did you use the data hack by any chance?(sorry, posted above) If so that's why I never jumped on board with that. Good luck, hopefully you'll still be here on XDA.

that sucks. Unlike some ISP's for land lines which come to agreements so each can freely use the others networks, I don't think any wireless providers do anything of the sorts. While its ****ty they didnt give you a warning, i'm sure they were probably paying up the ass to verizon.

If you go to the Sprint website and look at your usage. There will be a roaming section in the data usage there.

Yeah the fine print. if you go read the official data usage section it states that no more than 300mb may be used per month. Hints why 4-5gb got your service dropped instantly. You just let Verizon run over sprint then reverse and run them over with that bill they had to pay.

Actually the 300MB is for data cards. There is no roaming limit. They will cancel you if the majority of your usage is roaming and towers over Sprints.
I'll keep my eye on the Bionic and the Thunderbolt. Hopefully Motorola will work with the community and not have locked bootloaders.

Correct the roaming is for minute usage not data. People get kicked for the talk not data. Data roaming booting applies to data cards as well not phones but you will be charged overages on phone data roaming.

That is not correct. I am being dropped for data roaming on my Evo. No charges or anything are being applied to it.

There is somewhat if a simple solution. Tell them you roam mostly at home and they will send you a free airave (you have to push to get it for free). Basically it is a small sprint tower that goes thru your local ISP. Ooonce powered up, about two hours) it works flawless.

Well, DS works for sprint. Maybe you should PM him your number so he can fix those missing data roaming charges.

If you log into your Sprint account and look under your plan details it says 500 mb of roaming data.
The EVO you wish you had

They say that there is such things that are "unlimited", but it's not really. They just set a cap so high that they believe no one will hit. Altell used to do this with their messaging plans.
It's kind of crappy that they're doing this to you, but I would avoid any Moto product unless the C-mod gets ported to it quickly. Motorola phones from what I've seen and used of them, are terrible. Moto Blur sucks, and build quality isn't bad but they have awkward builds. Decent battery life in them, and decent support for their high end devices. But that's about it.

Vibrant indeed works with 4g !!!

With all the new kernels and rom developments lately, my Vibrant is running better than ever before. If this gets confirmed, that's icing on the cake. I could easily stick with this phone for a while.

Just went on the t-mobile website and changed my plan from "T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web" to Unlimited 4G Web. It says it will take up to 24 hours to change, so I will report maybe tomorrow on if I get increased speeds or not.

Hmm, interesting. My wife got a G2 and we switched our plan to an unlimited one an now I have 4g enabled on my plan (says 4g web) but I never really bothered checking speeds. But it might explain why I've been able to stream at 128kbs on tune in radio. I'll need to investigate this more.

If you buy any 3G or HSPA+ non-Blackberry smartphone they will put you on the 4G plan. The Android plan is being phased out for a more "general" data plan, and them calling it a 4G Web Plan has no impact on your download or upload speeds. It's practically the same thing.
Went through this with them on the phone when I got my HD7 because I noticed the "Android Unlimited Web" on my Vibrant's SIM (I put hte Unlimited Data in the HD7 and a 200MB plan SIM in the Vibrant). They said it was no difference, but to change it anyways since they're phasing those plans out.
This allows them to have only two types of data plans, like other carriers: Blackberry Plans and a General Data Plan. Before they had Blackberry Plans, Andorid Plans, and a General 3G data plan.
Since most if not all newer smartphones (except mid-range/low-end smartphones and features phones) will be HSPA+ (they call it 4G), they just call it a "4G Web" plan.

Case in point, theres even a '4G Blackberry web' plan, but no current Blackberry is remotely near 4G, they cap at 3.6 Mbps.
The only things that will affect download speed are the actual terminal you are using and the backhaul of the towers in your present location.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew this was not what it was being perceived as.
The idea that tmobile has to "enable 4g" from their customer service department seemed fairly ludicrous to me (I almost broke out the "Double facepalm" pic). Especially since my Vibrant connects to HSDPA the majority of the time which I'm fairly certain, since it's backward compatible, is actually the HSDPA+ (tmobile's "4G") network it was connecting to. I never enabled any 4G data plan. Or 3.5G for that matter.
This is also probably an attempt to get people to give up the Twenty to twenty-five dollar android data plans they've been holding onto since the G1 days.

Man, I really wanted to believe this would work. Anyone else try it out? I tried to see what mine would do, but when I looked at the services, it added 10 bucks to my overall plan, so I didn't go through with it. I'd love to see some other reviews about this.

Yea, I'm on flex pay and signed up with T-mobile when I got my Vibrant, so for me the price was the same.

Guys, our Vibrants are not 4G devices and wont connect faster than 7Mbs. The plan is called a 4G plan but that doesn't mean that our hardware is capable of those speeds. [Q] Tmobile Bandwidth Limit

Hello Everyone, I am currently with Tmobile and I have my G2 rooted and I love it. I use the portable hotspot feature quite a bit at work so I'm signed up for tmobiles "unlimited" internet on my phone. However Once I hit 5gb bandwidth for the month I received a text message saying that I had hit the 5gb cap for the month and for the duration of the pay period I would still have internet since I'm signed up for "unlimited" but I would have a reduced speed... Let me tell you right now its very reduced. So my first question is, do you guys have this problem? and my second question is, which service providers don't have this lame cap? My friend is on Sprint currently and he's used 12GB bandwidth so far this month and can still use his 4G speed which would be nice. So I may go with Sprint however I'd like to keep my options open so do you guys know if Verizon or At&T have the cap as well? Also what kind of phones would you guys suggest with the two? Preferably I'd like to fix the problem with Tmobile however I don't see that happening because when I went in the store they said I was already at the most internet /month.

Currently the only 2 providers that dont have a cap AFAIK are sprint and verizon. ATT used to have one, but was taken away back when the first ipad came out and now they only offer 2gb and charge you 10 dollars a gig over that. Sprint phones arent all that great right now ,probably the best phone on sprint right now IMO, would be the epic 4g. Verizons best phone is the thunderbolt, which ironically isnt for sale yet, but it will this month. they also have the iphone and some other android phones (fairly outdated at this point)
You got to remember that verizon is more expensive than t-mobile. Sprint is fairly expensive too and their 4g phones require an extra 10 dollar fee for bs reasons. If you want the unlimited data youre going to have to pony up the cash.
If i was you i would wait for the dual core phones to come to those carries, the droid bionic for verizon and who knows what for sprint.
Ps. I heard that verizon is throttling the top 5% of its users. I read it in engadget but alas, i dont have that carrier/problem so i havent looked into it.

Edit: forgot to mention that if you want 4g you have to make sure that you are in an area that has the 4g specific for that carrier. Your friend has 4g on sprint so that means youre at least in a wimax (sprint 4g) area.
Verizon has a different 4g (LTE) that might not be in your area at this point in time.
Also sprint has 3 4g phones, t mobile has 3 and verizon has only 1 and it isnt even out yet.

personally with the price per month my wife and i are paying for tmobile i would never leave.
best way to do it is to have 5 member family plan... cheapest way at least.

A T-Mobile tech support rep told me that he was told in a recent meeting that they were going back to the 10 gig cap. He said a date wasn't mentioned...who knows if this is true or not, I'm just sharing what I was told.

That was amazingly helpful and I have a lot to consider now. I do have it pretty nice with Tmobile right now because we have a 5 family member plan and if there is a prospect of 10gig coming out then I will probably wait it out. And if the new phones come out and I still want to change then I will. Thank you so much for your help!

There is a way to defeat the throttle. I've never hit the cap myself so haven't tried it. Five year old data plan with 10gb? Limit. But for root users it involved removing 3 files from the radio? Try searching the dev threads. I do remember that T-mo was the only carrier that this would work with. The throttle takes place on your device.

Well Tmo finally saw what we were doing in data throttling and it did work realllly well..but all good things come to an end.
I have however managed to "defeat" throttling by....staying under the 5GB. Through wifi surfing. I have wifi at home and at work and those are the two places you find me . Simple.
But its a DAMN SHAME because I never rode wifi before because HDSPA is faster than wifi. Takes me twice as long to download a CM nightie on wifi.
Tmo has got to smarten up. Still they're still my favorite compared to the others.

Your broadband connection being shared via wifi must really be slow for HSDPA to be faster. What is it, DSL?

I agree,your broadband connection via wifi must really suck. I get an average of 13gb down & just under 3 gb up. Some day's I'll get a little over 15gb down. You should probably get a new router.

We have bunch of thread about Throttle Data. If you don't like getting throttle please sign this petition and spread the word in our xda community. We need to get more people sign this petition faster so we can resolve the issue. And tell At&t to F*** Off because i hate when I pay for unlimitated data and only get about 3.5 to 4 GB with full speed. SO PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION HERE.

Honestly speaking, will this really do anything? At&t reserves the right to throttle or stop your data service as they see fit. Shady and screwed up, I know, but it is defined in the contract we signed when we all got service from them.

My data isn't throttled, but I don't actually use more than 3GB a month.

Move to T-mobile Switched from ATT and not regretting. Everything unlimited for the same price I paid at ATT for only 500 mins and 2 GB plan

The Big red did the same to me.Not even 2gb, but .7gb! I am not sure if I can sign being on the big red/ AT&T 15 unlimited non-smartphone plan.

Only if you don't have a grandfathered plan. I've never been throttled on TMo. I routinely use over 10GB of data per month including tethering.

Are you guys kidding me?
In Germany every provider only guarantees for 300MB - 1GB without being throttled to 64kbit/s while the plan states "unlimited"
You can get 4GB from T-Mobile if you pay extra...

well you can always change apn and have hspa+ speed on At&t better than sprint and t-mobile.

That only works if your device actually has the bands for T-Mobile and AT&T packed in there. Software can't change hardware.

Well i have skyrocket which is similar to t989 so when i get throttle i change my apn.

T-Mobile does have 5GB and 10GB options that now include FREE TETHERING! Yes, you're still throttled after the 5 or 10GBs of data. But.....5GB for 30$ including tethering beats AT&T easily. 10GB for 60$ including tethering as well.... (referencing classic plan pricing here) is not bad either.
Only Verizon ATM beats it with Their double data promo (example: 10GB for 5GB price of 50$). That's a promo, not everyday pricing either.
Oh, yeah....NO TETHERING INCLUDED on Verizon either.....

I have no quality issues with T-Mobile. Fast HSPA+ speeds plus four bars (68-72dBm). I'll admit outside major metropolitan areas T-Mobile is lacking, but for the majority of us living in those major metropolitan areas....T-Mobile is the better deal.

The person I responded to only asked about data throttling. You can grab a promo plan from them anyway that includes tethering, just as babydoll suggested.

I've never had issues with them either. They cover most of my routes in South Louisiana to my customers' homes. They've recently expanded their 3G coverage as well. I was pretty excited to see be able to stream last.fm again in some out of the way places.

So I find out today that I haven't really been using "america's fastest 4g network". Apparently my old Basic Android data plan or whatever it's called, doesn't give me full 4g speed. I've only been getting HALF of what I could be getting. This wouldn't bother me so much if I wasn't paying $30 bucks a month for this when the 2gb unlimited plan (I know, sounds funny, huh? 2gb UNLIMITED) is only $20. Even when I purchased my GS3, no one told me, "Hey, you know, you're not getting the full advantage of the speeds your phone is capable of." I guess they'd rather I spend the extra $10 a month and use less bandwidth at the same time. Why not, huh?
So my question is two-fold. First, is it possible those of you who claim to get sloooow dl's ALSO are on this old data plan and THAT's why it's so slow for them? And second, why didn't anyone tell me the whole time I had to deal with these schmucks for the last two weeks, that I needed a different data plan to achieve the full potential of the phone? Why don't they advise people with this older data plan that the speeds are not the same as the newer plans? They definitely never advertised the new plans as being faster than the older one's so how the hell was I ever supposed to know?

Have you ran a speed test? If not get the app from the play store and then go into the T-Mobile store and ask them what is up.

Of course I did, how else do you think I know? I've already asked and been told that my plan doesn't support the speeds. I was getting the exact same speeds in multiple places, as I did with my Sensation so I know this is true. I did change my plan, but apparently, it won't take effect until my next billing cycle, which seems stupid to me but whatever. I just don't understand why they've never tried to push a better, possibly more expensive, data plan?

What data plan do you have?

I'm using T-Mo's old Android data plan and i'm getting Faux G speeds of 7-13Mbs. You don't need to upgrade your plan to get faster speeds. I do believe they have to provision the device for use of their 42Mb service but that should have been done when they activated your new sim card. Do you know which plan you had before?

And second, why didn't anyone tell me the whole time I had to deal with these schmucks for the last two weeks, that I needed a different data plan to achieve the full potential of the phone? Why don't they advise people with this older data plan that the speeds are not the same as the newer plans? They definitely never advertised the new plans as being faster than the older one's so how the hell was I ever supposed to know?

T-Mobile's enhanced backhaul 3G service isn't that much faster in real use than normal 3G. Important to realize Tmobile doesn't have a 4G network, just an enhanced 3G one.
I have a Dell Streak 7 (cell now turned off) that barely outpaced their normal 3G.

Are you in a 4g area? Home isn't for me but work is... big difference between the 2

Preferred Android Plan... they changed it from my old G1 plan. Grandfathered

Depending on where you live (how far away from the nearest tower) your reception is going to be impacted differently than others. I myself live in Arlington Heights which is about 25-30 minute outside of Chicago.
Here's what I get on T-Mobile with my GS3. Speeds for me are perfect. Remember T-Mobile doesn't have true LTE 4G. They use HSPA+ which is like 3.5G.

A few people in chicago area in this thread posted their speed test and seem to have decent results..

And I had the old grandfathered data plan also.

Still being told I need the newer plan for faster speeds. Got my grandfathered plan reinstated for now until I figure out the deal. Just in case.

Weird.. I have Classic Unlimited Talk/Text for $59 and then 2GB of data for $20.

Have you tried the network boost apps from market? I tried this one and it has increased my 4G speeds at home which was poor before.

I've been curious on apps like that. Is it just a placebo app or does it actually work? Is there any scientific proof to back this app up?

Yeah, you have the plan they say I need. That or the 5gb plan, but I have the old $30 data plan that i guess has the 5gb threshold. One of the mods in the TMO forum told me my plan is fine. So why you are getting double the speeds I'm getting, in the same exact town? So I ended up calling tech support and she tried to do something but I swear whatever she did, my speeds are actually a tad slower now.

So i guess its just a bad signal at home. I live by Johnnies Beef and get terrible speeds. Went to Olive Garden by Woodfield mall last night and was pullin in over 20mbps. Crazy how a couple miles makes such a huge difference.

Hold on. When you upgraded your phone, did they require you to upgrade your plan also? I hardly use over 2gb a month and I'd like to keep it that way, not some gimmick 5gb for $30
