There is a thread at G2 forum about it and I did his method on my Mytouch 4g and it seems that the internet speed is still being throttled after.
What I did:
1) I install update-Ice-Glacier-v1.1.1-Themed_signed
2) I turn on data roaming and download Phone info and set to WDCMA only
3) I modify the service.jar successfully and install it into my phone
I get a nice 6Mbits/sec a few minutes but afterwards the speed goes down to 0.02Mbits/sec again.
Anyone has an idea how to defeat throttling for this phone?
I think this belongs in the Q&A forum, but I don't think there is anyway around it. From what I understand, they control it on their end. As a person that goes well beyond the 5GB cap per month, they seem to throttle you down for a day then things return back to normal speeds. Others have reported that this has happened to them as well.
If there is something we could do on our end that would be great, but T-Mobile does reserve the right to terminate our data plans if we constantly violate the terms and conditions. There was one person who regularly hits around 30GB a month. If they do cancel data plans, I bet he'd be the first to know.
Aside from going into tmobile corporate and changing it, theres nothing any rom changes are going to do unless you can change your phone number, IMEI numbers.......
If it could be done, it would have been. And they are enforcing it more now with the added tethering plans. 5gb on a phone is a lot, if your using it for tethering, then they have the right to charge you more to keep the network open for others

Even if you pay for tethering it's still cheaper than home internet, and once HSPA+ is fully rolled out it might even be faster to boot!
If you pay for tethering, will it be truly unlimited?

Nothing is truly unlimited. If you consume to many resources in which it effects others you could be limited.

Because since they have the different data plans now like 250mb etc..., the tehtering is just an added choice.
But yes, on all "unlimited" plans there is a 5gb cap, and then its their choice by your area and usage to throttle you or not.
I have actually gotten up to 250gb before the tiered plans came out before I was throttled. I was in an area that didnt have internet access and had to tether my pc and Ps3. Was interesting to explain in store why my use was so high lol

HA!
I guess the "tethering plan" only applies if you're using one of T-mobile's tethering apps, but I don't know why any of us would do that. All you need is PDANet and then they can't tell the difference between data usage and "data usage."
Even the stock android usb tether is available. I fail to understand what exactly we are paying for, if not a higher cap.
Anybody cares to share his Kung Fu to disable throttling on this phone please

i dont really see how you guys are having issues, i go over 5GB's (by quite a bit some months) at least 10 months outta the year, even with my blackberry (a while ago)... in the last 9 years with T-Mo (had smartphones+data for 5 of those years) i have gotted 2 txt's that i would be throttled (and then it never even happened) and thats IT!... maybe because they can tell ive been with T-mo even longer than DTK (deutche telekom), when i signed up it was voicestream and powertel... or maybe because i have so many phones (3 dealer lines, 1 data line + 4 full retail price lines in Family plan)
now i get HSPA+ at home (not that that matters too much with a 30/10 pipe) and my data usage has been higher, ive been using my phone to stream HD movies and TV from the house to wherever the hell i happen to be (watch movies and tv at work???? nawwww, why would i do that?)
So sprint claim the 10.00 fee is for uncapped data right? So riddle me this why can't I upload a video to youtube more than 100mb? Wouldn't you say that's capped? I call bull**** on this fee. Well after talking to 3 sprint reps today the 3rd one finally told me the truth about that fee its for the 4g access that everyone is not able to get right now. Sprint need to realize that there are smart people in the world. Sprint cut the bull**** and take that bull**** fee off until the 4g is up everywhere.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
that fee is to uncap the "unlimited data" which is actually limited to 5gb/month on 3g. Has nothing to do with 4g.
It is Sprints thinking that with these super phones, that we will use more data.
Guess what, I agree with them.

Hell no i dont agree with that ****..... i used avg 8-10g a month for years on wm phones (with no overage fees cause theres never been a cap ).. now with android im sitting around 3-4g.. i think they owe me 10 a month!!!!
Seriously? You called back 3 times to talk to Sprint until someone finally told you what you wanted to hear? To answer your question, the 10.00 is to keep the internet unlimited on and off of the 4g network. My guess is that you also use the phone as modem / tethering 'fixs' for free too then gripe about the bandwidth on a service you don't pay for. If you cant handle the 79.99 per month find another carrier with a better deal.
BTW it's the youtube app for android that has a 100mb limit, not the carrier.

@Hayabusa1300cc, for data cards and embedded devices (netbook/tablet) the cap is 5gb for 3g and unlimited for 4g.
For mobile phones it is unlimited on 3G and 4G with 300mb of roaming data, which is how you have guys like Lazydazed who routinely use more than 5gb from their moble phones.

This is 100% accurate, and yes I do work for Sprint. I want to clarify that non-roaming 3G is unlimited on all phones, not just when you have the $10 Premium Data charge. The $10 Premium Data is for the 4G phones only and is mandatory on 4G devices. If you're not going to be using 4G, why buy a 4G phone if the charge bothers you?
Hey guys, I was searching the interwebs for some general unlocking info and I found this from a couple years ago. Pretty interesting I think, what happened to this? Are they actually reflashing phones in-store? As far as the "gradual opening of the US wireless market"...it's gradual indeed

MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.
MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.
Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.
I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

Honestly speaking, will this really do anything? At&t reserves the right to throttle or stop your data service as they see fit. Shady and screwed up, I know, but it is defined in the contract we signed when we all got service from them.
My data isn't throttled, but I don't actually use more than 3GB a month.

Well we know how these companies tend to suck our hard earned money.
We have to sign a contract and still limit our usage.
I suggest move to another network which have a better data plan from AT&T.

T-Mobile does have 5GB and 10GB options that now include FREE TETHERING! Yes, you're still throttled after the 5 or 10GBs of data. But.....5GB for 30$ including tethering beats AT&T easily. 10GB for 60$ including tethering as well.... (referencing classic plan pricing here) is not bad either.
Only Verizon ATM beats it with Their double data promo (example: 10GB for 5GB price of 50$). That's a promo, not everyday pricing either.

I've never had issues with them either. They cover most of my routes in South Louisiana to my customers' homes. They've recently expanded their 3G coverage as well. I was pretty excited to see be able to stream last.fm again in some out of the way places.

Not happening. T-Mobile wised up to the APN mod, and now, even after changing the APN, you're still throttled if you go over your limit.

Not trying to be a jerk or an instigator here but, did you not read your contract first? I have a 2gb limit on my 4g service and have yet to exceed it. I manage my bandwidth just like it's money and I understand that going over will result in painfully slow speeds. So, instead of looking for a way to circumvent the agreement you made, which TMO is holding up on their end, why not be more careful with what you have and maybe even upgrade your plan? Just saying.

Agreed with various points that you touched on. However, I believe that T-Mobile "abuses" (for lack of a better word) of their throttling system. I get that after 2, 5 or even 10 GB of data T-Mobile reserves the right to limit the bandwidth throughput of specific users but to cap speeds at speeds slower than dial-up is just pathetic.

I agree that the speed at which TMO drops it's users to is quite horrific however, you do agree to the terms. That said, I'm seeing posts stating speeds around 70kbps. That would be a blazing 14kbps faster than dial-up. Where's the problem?

Not trying to be a jerk or an instigator here but, did you not read your contract first? I have a 2gb limit on my 4g service and have yet to exceed it. I manage my bandwidth just like it's money and I understand that going over will result in painfully slow speeds. So, instead of looking for a way to circumvent the agreement you made, which TMO is holding up on their end, why not be more careful with what you have and maybe even upgrade your plan? Just saying.

I used to have the 5gig plan but decided to switch to the 2 gig to save a bit of cash but apparently I use allot more data then I thought. And also I do connect to wifi when I'm at home.
Yea I agree to that TMobile is slowing down the data after the cap way too low. It basically almost makes my phone useless and they should atleast give us a bit more bandwidth.
5gb. I've used 4.15 and my bills do on the 9th. I've never been throttled and from the looks of it I don't ever wanna be.

Guys you are pretty naive if you think Tmo would increase the data throttle speed. It's to get you to upgrade to more data.

And that's why soon enough am going to cancel my data plan with them and go straight with wifi.. going to get me a portable mobile hotspot connect.. something I can put in my pocket and use...data plan is not tied to contract..

i must have doing a great job managing my data lately then, because around january/february i was catching pure hell with going over my 5GB data limit then i remembered about the apn trick started using that and didnt have any more problems going over my limit since then *Shrugs*
Turn off data when not using it. Disable auto sync. If on ICS rom, check the data monitor.
2GB should be enough, just have to manage it better

Its not so cut and dry. . I get throttled at the end of my cycle every month. I exceed my 5 gig and it happens. That's not the problem. The problem is it makes your data unusable. So slow that nothing works and that is B.S.
Unless this doesn't work anymore, you can at least switch it to EDGE so that you can get at least that once you are throttled.
