3G data only plans?

Bought the NS no-contract and was wondering if anyone knows of, and can recommend a 3G data only plan? I don't need voice, just a data plan, preferably no contract. Thanks!

Im sure you could go to Tmobile and just ask them to put a data plan on the phone...it is 30 bucks though

You have few choices:
1. webconnect 5GB semi-unlimited: $40 a month (I use it with nexus one and NS)
2. smartphone data only plan: $40 plus 40 cents a min voice
3. $1.5/day PAYG webpass
#1 and #2 are Even More Plus internet plans.

Yes these are TMobile plans.

Ugh, went to a T-Mobile store near me tonight and neither of the clerks had any clue what I was talking about. Only thing they knew about was a 2-year contract plan for $40/month, which I think is actually the Tab plan. I'm just gonna need to call the main #, I have the sim that came in the box, hopefully they can activate it from there.

From what I remember, they have to program the SIM in-store or back at HQ/factory.

Nope. Any SIM can be activated by giving them the number on the SIM card. I've done it with T-Mobile and at&t

EDIT: It seems like a lot of those other plans may be grandfathered, looks like Tmob has raised prices and the month-to-month plans are a rip-off. I'm thinking of giving SimpleMobile a try with their $60/month-to-month, unlimited everything plan (uses Tmob's network)

I had to call to get it - doesn't show on the website

Dunno what the problem is, just go to tmobile.com, go to Shop/Plans/Individual.
Type in your zipcode.
Then on the left, uncheck everything except "DATA ONLY"
You should see "Even More Smartphone Unlimited Web & E-mail" for $49.99/month

Don't ask for a 3g plan, just ask for a data plan. If you get too specific you'll confuse the monkeys behind the counter

Thanks, this is what I went for. Had to call to ask for it and they were able to activate the sim that came with the NS. Was activated in about a minute, lol.

[Q] SIM only no contract carrier that supports the G2?

I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):

I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb

AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

According to Wiki, Simple uses T-Mobile and AT&T. Interesting, I wonder how that works, since those 2 carriers don't use the same 3G frequencies.

Walmart is starting a something called Family Mobile. Supposed to run on Tmobile's network. Month to month.

If you really wanna save money port your number to google voice and remove your sms plan and drop your minutes down. Be creative and you can save money.

Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.

I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

I've decided!
Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

you only pay the termination fee if you haven't fulfilled your contract. Remember that by switching to prepaid you get worse coverage and slower speeds

Flex-pay does not indicate post-paid or pre-paid, flex-pay refers to what payment acct type you have, there is flex-pay monthly (month-to-month no contract) and flex-pay 2 year contract (2 year contract just like regular accounts). Just because you have to pay before you use it doesn't put flex-pay people on the same coverage/speed as prepaid customers.

Been prepaid since I bought the Vibrant. Saves me about 300 over the course of two years.

Let me rephrase. You have pre pay for both, 'pre-pay' is a lesser service so why change unless you need to save $...and for what you're loosing doesn't make much sense too me. IMHO

The prepaid thing is true.
My friend has a Vibrant running CM7, everything is identical to my phone, and he has prepaid. When we speed testing, his speeds were HORRIBLE, he gets 1-2 bars when I get 3-4, and his coverage seems to like to drop. It's not his phone, because when I tested his SIM in my phone, it did the same thing.
Could have been the SIM though, I'll tell him to get that replaced, and we'll try again.

Actually the differences comes in regarding some roaming agreements, and that's it. If you're in a roaming area, you might not always connect with Prepay. If you're in a native T-Mobile area, service is the same. For me, I just switched off of FlexPay over to PostPaid, so I can actually use my Google Voice account properly, as Flexpay & Prepay both disallow call forwarding features, which are essential to use Google Voice for your voicemail.

In the coverage maps and brochures
compare a contract postpaid brochure and a non contract prepaid brochure, not the same coverage, this is a known fact in the wireless industry, same thing with at&t and gophone, sprint and virgin/boost and so forth.
why would they offer a cheaper plan to someone off contract? I get a lot of people that had postpaid tmobile and switch to prepaid tell me it is not the same, that they used to get coverage before and once they switch to prepaid they don't get anything in a certain area and vice versa.

Straight Talk BYOD!!!!!

Didn't know if this had been posted but ST just into'd new bring your own device plans! Now we can take our unlocked GSII's and use them on ATT network for $45 unlimited talk/text/web! Obviously this is not a big deal for those that live in Tmobiles 3g/4g footprint but it is for me since I don't.

I wonder if their data speeds are like simple mobile

Oh I'm not on simple mobile I just remember a thread about their 3g speeds being under 200kbps. Haven't heard much good or bad with straight talk

Generally they begin capping around 2gigs. Not bad though for $45. Only reason this appeals to me is I can't get T-Mobile 3/4g service but I can get AT&T hspda service. As far as I know, this is the cheapest unlimited plan that runs on AT&T's network.

It does, unlimited minutes and messages, 4G with speeds throttled after the first 2G - but it's only available as a family plan: 2 phones, 2 plans, 2 x $50 / mo.
Great if you've got a family member who's interested, and you both live in the t-m ob footprint.
The same plan's available BYOD for $60/mo, which is a lot more when you consider that the family plan includes phones.

I used Simple Mobile's $40 per month plan and data speeds were horrible. It was so bad I switched to their $60 unlimited. Then this past weekend T-mo had that free phone giveaway thing for new customers, so I ended up signing up for the $60 plan for 2GB of data. Same price as Simple and I only really use about 2GB per month anyway, so it works well for me plus a free Galaxy S 2 is always cool with me.
The one thing about t-mo I really like is that if you call them there are a lot more options than what you see on the web. For example, I use Google Voice so I don't need SMS. That cuts $10 out of the bill right there, but you have to call to get them to take that out, can't do it via the web I don't think.

When is the Straight Talk SIM plan coming out?! Will they do 4G? God, I hope so, $45 bucks for all the **** they offer is a STEAL, especially if you use it with a smartphone... Unlike I am doing with GoPhone ATM

I hadn't realized there were call-only deals. I'll have to call them. No idea if they're flexible on their BYOD plans (I don't need SMS either)

the 200mb is 4g, but its unlimited internet access just slows to edge. but the $60 optioin is better, comes w/2gb of 4g speeds then edge. About $64.80 after taxes on monthly 4g plan.

Knowing AT&T, if you use Straight Talk, the data speeds are probably capped at 512kbps.

Didn't work for me. I cannot even use SMS with their unlimited $45 plan. Data is down as well. I'm on Straighttalk AT&T SIM card. Customer support reset the options on their side twice, but it didn't help. I tried two different phones with this SIM card to no avail.

texts should be working but for data, did you put in the new APNs? Data wont just work if you just insert the SIM card in since AT&T and ST have different APN's

TMOBILE vs SPRINT

Thinking of jumping ship to tmobile since 4G has never been offered in my area for Sprint. Also the pricing is a little better than Sprint? However outside of my area service is non-existent unless I force my phone into roaming? I like the data plan Sprint has but believe Sprint will change there data plan in the coming months. With that I will be grandfathered in until my contract ends. So if someone could tell me if they have trouble with data and signal or if it is great, or what they have to do get signal since tmobile is gsm instead of cdma?

I'm not sure what you are asking. Not knowing where you are at, generally speaking if you have good sprint signal you would have good t-mobile signal. If you do not have good sprint signal, you may have just as poor t-mobile signal as their tower footprints are similar. If you live out from a city or something, AT&T or most especially Verizon have much larger footprints.

Do you mean they have a better price but for less services? Like not having unlimited texting or something? I thought Sprint had the best price.

I believe the pricing is very similar, but you get speed cut back on data once you go over the limit of your specific plan. Sprint data on thier network is not throttled or limited.

Sprint and Tmobile have very good signal in my area. However No 4G for Sprint, but 4G for Tmobile is here. Once you leave my city since I travel outside it for work alot the signal fades. I then use "ROAM Control" to force into to roam mode. I need to know is there a way to force Roaming on the Nexus S or any other phone on the TMobile network?
US Cellular is very good in the rural areas but it is CDMA and the pricing is quite a bit higher.

Well TMobile post paid plans are better, I think for 45 dollars you get, one hundred mins, unlimited texts, and five gbs of data

T-Mobile pre paid is 30 dollars for this same plan. Just throwing that out there. That's what I'm using right now. Unlimited data but it gets throttled at 5gb

US Cellular is very good in the rural areas but it is CDMA and the pricing is quite a bit higher.

Sprint is CDMA and T-Mobile is GSM, the phones are not interchangable on each other's network. You would have to get a GSM phone, and it would have to have T-Mobile specific frequencies for HSPDA+ (Their "4G" which is 1700mhz, different that AT&T's 1900mhz) in order to get 4G speeds.

I bought my phone (i9020T) used for around 200, but you can still find new ones around on the internet for I think around 400-500 USD maybe cheaper if you can find a good deal. The i9023 (the SLCD screen) is usually cheaper. I found some online for around 300 - 350 USD. Both the i9023 and the i9020T will work with 3G on T-Mobile's network. The data speeds I get are quite good as well. Some places I'll get as much as 5 megs down but the norm is usually around 3 to 4 for me. There are no limitation with the plan really that I can think of. I mean the only thing is that you only get 100 minutes but I've bought Groove IP (VOIP app in the Play Store) so essentially I have unlimited minutes now as well. Only paying $30 a month.
All you have to do is get a T-Mobile prepaid sim from the website and pop it in the phone and you're good to go.

I did exact as user above, $30 and then Groove IP. For my location T-Mobile is vastly faster, but you have to check your location coverage. In big cities Sprint can be fast. Since their phone is CDMA they don't use SIM so their phones goes for slighty lower value. You can get Sprint Nexus S cheaper than GSM version.

I hope this doesn't seem like an ass move but, but I have a Nexus S t-mobile for sale.

I can't wait my etc goes down to a hundred in a month, I'm debating just going galaxy nexus or HTC one x, either one that's for sale at best buy and use that buy back plan which my girl didbwith her new iPhone 4s she's been guarenteed 400 bucks before six months, it almost worth it to be a phone whore

I use the $50, You can change every month to any of the plans.
Tip :If you buy the Card in Calling Mart $100 goes for $95 no tax charged.
So if you pick the $50 it would be like paying around 44+Tax in a post paid (Yes $44 for an unlimited everything).
About Signal, I don't have problems, ATT is a little better(3G+) but much more expensive.
Now I don't like Sprint or Verizon because I like the flexibility of having a GSM unlocked phone.
