Youtube stutters after 4.3 update - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks, after updating my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013) to 4.3; both devices can no longer play Youtube videos smoothly. Video will take a long time to buffer, play for a minute or so, and would stop to buffer for several minutes. This makes all videos un-watcheable on either device.
Before the 4.3 updates I have never experienced this problem.
Can anyone else relate to this? Watching the exact same videos on my laptop (connected to the same Wi-fi network) works just fine with no hiccups.

Try clearing the YouTube apps data.

uncontrollable buffering on v5.0.21, so I downgraded to 3.5.5.
still buffers, both at home, and at school. Both networks are at least 20mbps download speeds.

Netflix playback problems.

Hello all,
I have been having an issue with video playback. YouTube is decent most of the times, but I just tried using Netflix and every 5 or so seconds the audio will skip and the video will freeze, then catch back up. Really annoying and makes for a poor experience. Is this an issue on JB or something that I can easily fix?

I've probably watched at least 20 hours of Netflix content on my N7 so far and I have not seen so much as a single hiccup.
I don't know if your issue could be bandwidth related. I have about 12.5Mbps down at home, and have also streamed via WiFi hotspot on my Verizon S3 using LTE.

Definitely not a bandwidth issue. I have 30 down FiOS. Maybe I'll try reinstalling or try a different ROM. Could be related to the kernel I have as well.

I restored to a previous stock backup and still showing the same problems. This is annoying.

Very strange. My N7 is 100% stock ... not even unlocked or rooted.
The Netflix app is reported as version 1.8.1 build 573.

Mine is back to the stock ROM and it is still acting up. Not really sure whats going on. I have rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled and doesn't change it.

Maybe a hardware defect. Is your stock ROM a clean install?
Stock ROM was a nandroid backup. I don't know if it is a hardware defect. I refuse to exchange this over something like choppy Netflix playback. Simply for the reason that my tablet is extremely solid otherwise.

Apparently it was simply my Netflix settings were too high. I changed it online from best quality to better quality and it immediately fixed my issues. No more stuttering. I still find it hard to believe though that with a 30 meg down connection it has trouble streaming HD video.

I have the choppy playback problem too. I was getting this on my Kindle Fire with ICS and doing a factory reset and reinstall (still within ICS) fixed it. I tried the same on the N7 here with no luck.
I would do the quality thing, but it seems sad I would have to degrade the playback quality on all Netflix capable devices (the iPad 2, the 47" TV, etc) just to make it work and that still wouldn't explain why the Kindle Fire running the same version, with "slower" hardware would play just dandy.
I've tried both the Amazon version (Version 1.8.1) and the Play version (Version 1.8.1. Build 573) without any difference...they might be the same version, but when I went from Play to Amazon it wanted to "upgrade" me, so I uninstalled and did the Amazon one just to test.
Pretty sure it's not bandwidth either as I have 25mb down, 5mb up.
Personally, since everything else works awesome on my N7 and I have it completely set up the way I want now (rooted, all apps installed, etc) I think I'll pass on doing any other weird stuff to get Netflix working. Hopefully they will update it and fix it (yeah...kinda blaming Netflix for this)!

YouTube error PA

I'm using PA beta9 and I've been having issues signing into YouTube. I started having this issue on beta8. I tried re-installing gapps, reflash rom, clear app data, and uninstall and reinstall.
I will get "an error occurred" intermittently using the app (it trying to sign in) and when I try to sign in manually.
I was just curious if anyone else has this issue. I could not find any recent information on this problem.

Youtube working fine here...PA 9 with franco kernel.....just watched a couple of vids to make sure...
I can certainly watch videos but it refuses to sign in.
I'll keep an eye out to see if there's anything else I'm having issues with or if someone else has this problem.
Thanks for the reply, definitely something on my end.

Looks like in between PA versions a data wipe was needed. It works fine now. Thanks for letting me know it was an isolated incident.

(Q) Nexus 4 can't play YouTube videos?

Edit: Turning off HD makes the videos worm, but my wifi is definitely capable of streaming 720/1080p. Could it possibly be due to the fact that videos aren't in 720? Hmm..
So when using the YouTube app videos don't load. The 'Play' icon shows up, but pressing it makes the video buffer, then it shows again. Playing YouTube on my other phones works fine, so it isn't a server issue. What's up?

I've seen mention of this with the N4 and certain carriers (on data). Is this on data only, or wifi as well?

Data is fine, it's my wifi that's the problem.

I get the same problem. I have WiFi on and I try watching YouTube videos and that **** always stops to load. I don't ever remember it being this bad. I has to stop to load like 3 or 4 times in every video. I always end up turning off HD which helps but dam man. I want that HD

I have had this for ages now - All youtube videos buffer every 4 seconds or so. The temporary fix is:
1) Force stop youtube
2) Clear data and clear cache
3) Press and hold power button for 10 seconds
4) Turn phone on, reset time/date (step 3 resets date/time)
Youtube then works for a couple of days.....
I have also tried turning off 'optimize wifi for battery life' and removing youtube updates. Neither seem to affect the problem.
Uninstall YouTube and then re-install. Ta daaaaaa.
Oh my!! Thanks guys! Finally HD. I did both of your steps and it now works in HD without constant buffering. However, I had been wondering if it was a problem with general WiFi speeds. As sometimes doing aspeedtest I would get 3mbps when I have a 12 Mbps connection.

Glad it helped.
But - it would be nice to get rid of this bug once and for all ? Are google even aware of it ? Is there a publicly available bug tracker or something we can all see ?

YouTube keeps logging me out

Every now and then the YouTube app keeps signing me out on 4.2.2.
Anyway to fix this?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Thats a known bug. No fix so far.
And the bug is every device 4.2.2 i think maybe lower fw but its stock devices too
Alright thanks for the reply!

yup, galaxy nexus, nexus 7, nexus 10, all my devices log me out of youtube every single time, the widgets reset back to generic instead of my subs.
Ive tried cm, tried PA, tried stock, nothing works, the best solution is just to uninstall the updates
I hope google will deal with this asap.

OTA 4.3 - Bad WiFi

My Nexus 7 was becoming very unresponsive and pissing me off. Was on older JB version and Paranoid Android. I flashed back to stock/wipe all and then allowed 4.3 OTA update, rerooted. Now my Wifi is EXTREMELY slow. Buddy and I at work put my N7 side by side with his iPad on the same wireless at work and his was flying through sites, with mine timing out left and right.
Any ideas why the radios are so crappy now? Did I ruin something in the flashing processes?
Would love if someone had an answer for this. I have a stock N7 (2012) and have the EXACT same problem. Ever since it updated itself to 4.3 my wifi has been remarkably slow. Can't stream any video at all. I do speedtests on my S4 right next to my tablet, and the phone is 12mbps down with the tablet being about 200 kbps. It's unbearable, I can't figure out whats going on. Tried all the usual fixes with no help.
What normal fixes have you used? I'll see if they fix my issue.

The usual. Clearing caches, factory reset, reseting my router. What i ended up having to do was root it and put an android 4.2.2 rom onto it. Immediately solved my problem and I am pulling down around 12mbps now and can stream video . I can't believe you and I are the only ones out there with this problem but maybe. I hope next update google will fix this, i like having the stock firmware on a nexus device.
Oh, ok. Thought there were some 'normal' tools/apps to try. I'm with you, hopefully something is found soon.
Quick question, what type of router do you have at home?
Try doing a clean install of 4.3
I'm not having any problems with download/upload speeds.

Yeah, that was the first thing I tried. No luck with that. Like I said once I switched back to a 4.2.2 based rom the tablet's internet has been as fast as it's supposed to be.
