OTA 4.3 - Bad WiFi - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 7 was becoming very unresponsive and pissing me off. Was on older JB version and Paranoid Android. I flashed back to stock/wipe all and then allowed 4.3 OTA update, rerooted. Now my Wifi is EXTREMELY slow. Buddy and I at work put my N7 side by side with his iPad on the same wireless at work and his was flying through sites, with mine timing out left and right.
Any ideas why the radios are so crappy now? Did I ruin something in the flashing processes?

Would love if someone had an answer for this. I have a stock N7 (2012) and have the EXACT same problem. Ever since it updated itself to 4.3 my wifi has been remarkably slow. Can't stream any video at all. I do speedtests on my S4 right next to my tablet, and the phone is 12mbps down with the tablet being about 200 kbps. It's unbearable, I can't figure out whats going on. Tried all the usual fixes with no help.

What normal fixes have you used? I'll see if they fix my issue.

The usual. Clearing caches, factory reset, reseting my router. What i ended up having to do was root it and put an android 4.2.2 rom onto it. Immediately solved my problem and I am pulling down around 12mbps now and can stream video . I can't believe you and I are the only ones out there with this problem but maybe. I hope next update google will fix this, i like having the stock firmware on a nexus device.

Oh, ok. Thought there were some 'normal' tools/apps to try. I'm with you, hopefully something is found soon.

Quick question, what type of router do you have at home?

Try doing a clean install of 4.3
I'm not having any problems with download/upload speeds.

Yeah, that was the first thing I tried. No luck with that. Like I said once I switched back to a 4.2.2 based rom the tablet's internet has been as fast as it's supposed to be.

Anyone else having wifi connection issues with 4.2.1?

I only got my n7 a couple of weeks ago and almost immediately updated to 4.2. I didn't notice any issues. Immediately after the 4.2.1 update I keep getting random connection issues. I have to turn wifi off and on to resolve it.

I had the issue.. 32gb version in the US with the sep build. I actually had it prior to to 4.2.1. I ended up going into advanced properties and changing wifi to always on. Drains battery, but fewer need to turn wifi off and back on.

Yes. I have WiFi disconnects and random reboots since the new update .

WiFi Fixer
I use WiFi Fixer downloaded from Google Play. When the connection is dropped it automatically reconnects after a second or two.
Same on my 7 WiFi stops working at random times turn WiFi off and on fixes it, only started after 4.2.1 update

Just to clarify, i'm having this problem 100% stock. Not rooted what so ever. Roms/kernels could have this eliminated. But I wouldn't know.

No wifi internet / e-mail / notifications after 4.2.1
I am having a similar issue. Stock Nexus 7, never rooted, installed the 4.2.1 update when it was pushed. Since then I can connect to wifi connections but there is no internet access. While the icon in the upper right has small flashing arrow like data is being sent back and forth, the icon remains gray and no internet-requiring services on the tablet work. I've tried everything that I (and Google Play and Asus support) could think of with no luck.
The only thing they could come up with at the end was to restore the tablet to factory settings. Unfortunately I have application data that I need to back up that I can't access by accessing the internal storage using my laptop (I'm stock, remember?).
So I'm between a rock and a hard place here. Anyone have any suggestions? It was very frustrating when the Asus representative suggested I use the built-in backup and restore feature:
Me: "That requires internet access to work right?
Asus representative: "Oh....right..."
My Wi-Fi on both my Nexus 7's is very slow. They stay connected fine but I'm getting about 150kbps download speeds. I factory reset one of them to no prevail. Anyone have any insight on this or heard of others with this issue? All my other devices work fine on the same Wi-Fi connection and I tried turning everything else off so just the Nexi where connected to see if the speeds are faster, but they aren't. I'm stock on both devices and both are the 16gb version, one older than the other.

Known issue. I logged a bug with Google and there's actually several open bugs reporting wifi issues. So far, none of the bugs are being picked up by google officially.

I've tried this same thing, and as soon as I installed 4.2, WiFi went to sh**. Completely stock.
So turning wifi off then on seems to be the generally excepted quick fix?

Or use Static IPs. That solved it for me. I had to ask my company to provide a reservation for my MAC Address. It's like back in the 90s when Wifi started coming out using the BellLabs/Lucent chipset.

[Q] can't connect to WiFi running newest liquid smooth rom

As I put in the topic, I'm running the newest liquid smooth build on my N10. Everything is running really great on it, but I can't connect to WiFi at all? Sorry for posting this here but I'm a noob and can't post in the dev forums yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated considering my tablet is useless without WiFi!

Some wifi problems are inherent to 4.2. But if wifi doesn't turn on immediately after flashing any rom, usually a reboot cures it. Before rebooting tho, try cycling Airplane mode on/off.

I've already tried rebooting several times. I even booted into recovery and wiped everything again and reflashed the Rom. Still no WiFi? I've never had a problem with it on stock or cm10.1

I never had wifi issues with my N10 until I decided to give Liquid's newest build a try. I tried all the tricks - reboots, toggling airplane mode, even started from scratch and reflashed the entire ROM but had no luck. Sometimes it would connect for a moment, but then would immediately disconnect. As soon as I returned to my latest backup (Steve Spear's AOKP pub builds), and even since trying other ROMs I've had no wifi issues. I'm saying with 100% certainty there's a problem with Liquid's ROM, but it sure seems that way to me.
Maybe redownload the ROM and start over (perhaps something got messed up while downloading). That's the one thing I never tried as I got tired of monkeying around with it.

Would you mind posting the link to that ROM? I don't have time to mess around with issues and need a solid and fast daily driver. I use autocad on my N10 for work so I'm needing this resolved badly!

Hmm... I'm on the latest LiquidSmooth and wifi works just fine for me.

Screen unresponsive

Basically, my N7's screen is frequently unresponsive. I was trying to start something in my launcher, and tried pressing it at least 6 times, but nothing happened. Then I tried swiping between launcher pages, and that worked just fine the first time.
This just started happening on an almost constant basis within the last 30-60 minutes, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or heard of anyone else experiencing it. I'm running the latest Minimus with Jassy's latest kernel (I just flashed them this morning, but it was probably 4-5 hours ago at least), with the DPI set to 290 (I just raised it from 280 to see if that would help anything). I also cleared the cache and dalvik.
Any ideas?
My girlfriends tablet has done that too, then it just randomly goes back to just fine

Same here this has happened to me on stock, but a reboot fixed it.
I've only experienced this using Chrome. it got so bad that I'm using the molasses-in-the-winter-going-up-hill Firefox browser just to be able to web surf.
Same here stock, and clean ROM.. Haven't noticed anything on kanged cm nor pa yet. Can't get otg to work worth a crap either I bought chainfires app to help with otg worked with stock based ROMs but not cm based ROMs .. I'm pissed I bought the 16 GB model..

It happened to me as well (complete stock). Mostly (if not all) instances were with Chrome. I don't remember it happening again since I switched to Chrome beta. (Fingers crossed).
I just took mine back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the 32gb model. The guy at the store asked if anything was wrong with the tablet and I told him that it would freeze up and I would have to reboot in order to fix it. He told me that all tablets and phones freeze like that and that I should reboot the device at least once a day to prevent the freezing of the screen. I thanked him and told him that I would do that. These salesmen must think that everyone is as dumb as they are.
I hope my new tablet doesn't have the same problem, because if it does I might give up on the new nexus 7.

4G LTE Constantly Timing Out

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone can help me with a fix or tell me why my 4G LTE keeps timing out. I'm Rooted on Stock 4.3 with unlocked Bootloader and the latest TWRP Recovery. I have the correct APN set up and enabled and already flashed the 33_84hybridLTE_enablerV2.zip. LTE/GSM auto (PRL) is enabled in Phone information. I have the 4G icon and faster speeds of course, but when streaming video from apps like YouTube or Vevo or even when I'm downloading apps from the Play Store, videos constantly stop every few mins and downloads sometimes pause and go really slow as if I was on Edge. I tested my speeds and on average I'm getting 6Mbps down and 3Mbps up, sometimes as high as 13Mbps down and 7Mbps up so that should be enough speed. What gives then? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've had something similar happen but only on versions before kitkat. I never figured out what the issue was but a restart always fixed it. Sorry that's not much help. It was a very weird, annoying issue without an apparent cause.

Yeah I noticed that a reboot temporarily fixes it, so this doesn't happen to you anymore on KitKat? It's ok all input is welcomed, I'm just glad I wasn't alone on this LOL.

I think it's happened twice on kitkat when I was on the initial image release. I've since upgraded to the KRT16S version and haven't had it happen at all. It happened regularly on jellybean. I'd try the S version of kitkat and see if that helps. It's definitely better for me.

Strange behavior with text and lock screen?

Hi,
Ive just bought a brand new Nexus 10 and its doing really wierd things.
After updating to Android 4.4.4 i kept getting kicked off and the device would go to the lock screen. Additionally the screen would do strange things when running Chrome like going totally black with a white ring in the center of the screen.
Also text doesnt seem to display properly at times; i have now downgraded back to version 4.2 which seems to have got some stability back howver text is still broken on occassion.... See attached.
Its really odd as i have a Nexus 7 mkII which ultra stable.
Could this be hw related or simply is the rom simply this buggy?
Thanks for any ideas.

Ok so I updated to 4.3 and the machine seems to be stable minus the occasional logout when opening Chrome.... However text still has problems displaying; also as with Android 4.2 it seems the wifi kept disconnecting every few minutes. Since the AP being used was the spare wifi card in my Linux HTPC it migt have something to do with the Intel Centrino card at the other end. I have a spare 3com AP which I will try and if not I also have a spare Cisco wireless router which I can also hookup.....
Other then that I dont know???

Have you tried a complete wipe (flashing the factory image and doing a data wipe/factory reset afterwards)? Not sure if that's what you did when you downgraded. I would think a 100% fresh start would help.
Yep I did... Sorry if wasnt clear. I even reformatted the partitions.....
I think what bothers me the most is the incomplete text...... When downgrading I got the stock rom from Google directly.
Also something funky is the screen seems to slightly flicker when running the Plex app. This could just be an app thing though as everything else is fine.

Boy. This is a real head scratcher. I've never heard of this before. It would be one thing if the screen was static, which would usually indicate a loose ribbon connection. Since you've already successfully flashed the factory image, I don't think it would be software related. But I can't think of any hardware issue that would cause this either.

Ok good news.... Using my spare Cisco wireless router I got stability on the wifi
I'm just thinking that maybe the issue could be something to do with the graphics chip??
Of course if I dont need to i really dont want to but if it isnt a software bug and the issue is hw related perhaps I should just contact the place where I bought it and get it replaced???

Hi,
It is really bugging me, quite a weird issue. I believe it can be surely a defective unit, after all you flashed a stock ROM wiping completely and problems still persists.
I recommend you contacting the place you bought it. Hope you can get a replacement .
