curious to see what kind of battery life people are getting on average with their phones? im pretty happy with the life im getting but after reading what some other people are getting it puts mine to shame!
how many hours are you guys getting under how much load and which kernel/rom/mods do you have?
I too am interested in this.. maybe you could post your stats, I have no time atm.
My unrooted n1 battery is poor
unrooted N1, average use 3G, Wifi, some surfing, living wallpaper; about 5%/ hour -> 20 hours. Assume as acceptable, about one day of use; better than my Iphone used to be (worse than Hero 1.6 was)..
Mine is not rooted and the battery life is either less or on par with the iPhone. Only use beautiful weather widget as well as the default news one. It's relatively new so I'm hoping it improves after a few charges, definitely considering picking up another battery.

you don't need another battery. just tune up your N1 correctly. Use either Wifi or 3g preferably when available. Use push rather than scheduled sync. Leave brightness down to minimum, you will only need more when you are outside.
Connections & screen usage take biggest part of your battery life.
I heard also some people who by pressing *#*#4636#*#* selected "WCDMA only" as preferred network so phone doesn't try to swap to 2g when there is no 3g. Changes between networks drain battery very fast. Let's say for example while traveling by car.
As well I have to say that last generation mobile phones have to be charged once per day. I consider that normal. Come on most of us play around, surf website, take pics and upload them to facebook, etc several times along the day.
I have the UV kernel and I think it does extend battery life. The first day I had it it lasted for 18 and a half hours with a fairly normal use: GTalk, browsing, camera, market downloads, gps, etc.
I do want to mention for those who are comparing their battery life to their iPhone's that there's nothing to compare, as there's absolutely no hardware equivalences. You just can't compare a 600MHz processor to a 1000GHz one, as well as larger and better screen, 256 vs 512MB mem, etc. I'd like to see what your battery life would be on your iPhone if you could plug in htc's battery.
Definitely not saying Apple is not good on batteries, just saying to read and check stuff before you make comparisons between devices.

mmm..... i'm thinking to load some rom on my N1 but... which ones are the advantages of doing so? the mods?

I don't want to compare hardware/ batteries, I am aware of all the differences.. But: I DO want to have a smartphone, which -at least- can go with for a day of usual use (calls, messages, internet) -at which point the Iphone just fails..

then post your normal usage in mins/day for each thing and we would be able to tell you.
well i dunno i get a full days use out of my phone with maybe an hour or 2 or talk time and maybe 20 messages, syncing gmail 5 or 6 times, checking market, and a little bit of browsing. at the end of the day ill still have about 30% or so....im not complaining really but from what i hear from other people on the forums here their doing alot heavier usage and still at 70% or something. im just curious what is really making the difference, i dont have wifi, bluetooth, or sync on ever. but i keep my screen at full brightness always cause i love how the screen looks im running CM 5.5.3 and use setCPU.
I used a T-Mobile nexus one for awhile then sold it and bought an AT&T nexus one. The AT&T version is getting significantly less battery life than the T-Mobile one. I used the same AT&T service on both phones. I'm not saying it's necessarily a difference between the 2 versions, but between the 2 phones at least. I got probably 36 hrs. average on the T-Mobile version and maybe 18 hrs. average on the AT&T one.

Thanks for the tips. How good is auto-brightness for this phone? Would it be better to just set a low and a high profile for outside?
Stock rom. Heavy internet. 7 hours straight....
Or 3 full movies
Or all day using it normaly...
Brightness always almost all the way down, no updating widgets other than weather, no push email...
Very happy with it..

You were also probably getting significantly better battery life with the EDGE only of the tmobile one, on the ATT Network, than the now 3g enabled att nexus. You can force edge on the nexus one in the wireless settings, and switch it off if you are gonna be browsing the internet for a while, etc to try to get the most outta that battery.

I tried edge only but didn't notice much of a difference.
I have had every GSM android phone Available in the USA, as well as the Rogers Magic from Canada & European HTC Hero.
HTC has been Extremely amazing with their products and if any issues, they were very helpful.
Ive Read more bad things about Samsung products than good such as electronics dying a few months of being purchased brand new and their support being the worst.... I am a little shaky to buy the phone due to people commenting feeling like straight up plastic. and also because i would be pretty pissed for it to die just a couple weeks, or months from purchase date.
Anyone Experience anything wrong with their phones so far? Hardware Related???? Now Samsung also sucks with Updates and Promises, Just look at the behold. Seriously!!!!!!!! --- Flame, flag, discuss, be of use, do your thing-----
The various radios and their ability to hold a strong signal when touched by your hand is definitely a concern. Indoors, 3G reception with this device is extremely unreliable. I fluctuate from having full signal strength (not just going off of 'bars'), to EDGE, to dropped calls. I've had calls go straight to voicemail, while the phone is sitting on a desk, where other phones did not have this issue.
Outside, depending on how 'obstructed' I am, it's a bit difficult to drop. But if I walk between two houses, 3G signal is screwed. Blame it on the frequency of T-Mo's network, I guess; but I have used 3G phones on the network which have never suffered from these problems. A co-worker of mine uses a cheapo 'MyTouch 3G', which outperforms my $500 phone in terms of 3G strength and GPS-locking. Really sad.
The screen is incredible. The best in the industry, if you ask me. The pixel density isn't as crazy as the iPhone 4's, but the colors are unmatched. Watching videos on this screen is like sitting in front of a tiny Plasma TV. Speaker quality is actually quite decent, to boot. Sounds about as good as the speakers on a MacBook Pro.
The build quality is solid, for what it is. That said, it still feels like a toy, and is probably built from cheap plastic to keep the costs down (the screen probably costs a fortune). I would've preferred a heavier, metal-body phone.
The buttons, unfortunately, feel very cheap. My biggest concern is that the power button might fail some day. The headphone jack is cheap. In fact, my first headphone jack was non-functional, and would constantly short out.
Despite all of those hiccups, I still really like the device.
Samsung's support is not the greatest, which is why I worry in the first place. In 2003, I bought one of the last CRT HDTVs. It was an issue of 'spend $1k for CRT or spend $3k+ for LCD'. I was broke, and in school, so I went with the CRT. After a year of mild usage, the board inside of the TV died, and I could only view snow-laden black and white images. The TV was covered by the extended warranty I bought through the store. A year later, on the dot, it died again. And the next year, again. Eventually, I grew tired of spending money on warranties, and let it lapse. Sure enough, the TV died again. From that point on, I was skeptical of Samsung's QA. They wanted to charge me the cost of the TV to repair it. Needless to say, the set was junked, and I wasn't happy.
I still don't like their build-quality. I think Samsung cheaps out, even on their larger sets. Everything is thin, glossy plastic. But one thing is for certain: Samsung knows how to build a panel -- the best panels in the industry, if you ask me.
That's all I really have to say about them. Hope it helps.

Galaxy s is samsung's flagship product it's being launched globally, I don't think they are in position to let it die as behold. But it's my own opinion though.

I would just like to add my 2 cents as far as battery issues.
1. I use task killer to disable unused apps and free up ram/cache info and save on a little battery power
2. i setup the brightness manually to be low and the phone is still very bright. The phone on average uses 80-90% of its power from this alone so it is VERY important to manage. I used it auto on the first day and the phone lasted me about 12 hours. Once i set it up manually i got about 14-15. For example 8am-11PM. With lots of use. The phone battery seems very realistic to use in a single day..but more than 20 hours i would say you would have to have moderate to low usage..i would say i have high usage..1st day i had it with a full charge
30emails 10with attachments
100+texts
20 app downloads
30 min of web browsing
30 min of phone calls
50% total time using WIFI
40% with 3g
the rest just browsing on the phone setting up emails and such
please feel free to email me with any specific questions: [email protected]
I love this phone!
Update: 07/21/10
Today is the second day i use the phone fully and using it for just about the same amount my battery is only about 47% compared to 30ish% the day before..last night it crapped out at around 1145 with 5% energy..its 8pm now and im at 47%..so far i have charged it fully 3 times..i expect 2-4 more charges and im gonna get a max time of about 15-18 hours of hard use..LOVE THIS PHONE!!
Delete.
i'm very happy with the phone. the only caveat i really have (which a lot of people don't seem to have) is battery life. i get about 13-14 hours with 3-4 hours of display-on time, while others have been reporting double that.
as far as motoblur is concerned, if you just get another launcher and use Titanium Backup Pro to freeze motoblur Home and other services, then you won't even have to think about it.

I should be receiving my Atrix for AT&T tomorrow, this will be a HUGGGGGGEEEEEE upgrade from my measly HTC Hero (Sprint CDMA) that I have modified to the ends of the Earth. I'm in need of more power and amazed at the stuff you can do with the Atrix.
My question to you all, has this phone met or surpassed your expectations? Did it fail to achieve those expectations? Tell me what you think of this phone, I have been reading so many reviews about the phone I feel like I know all technological aspects about the phone as well, haha.
How fast were you to get rid of MotoBlur?

I think I can speak for a lot of people in saying that, as far as the Atrix goes, I am in love with the "potential" this phone has. But as far as meeting those expectations, well, that's something to be debated. There are areas where the dual core shines and other areas it seems it is not harnessing the full power. Then couple that with AT&T's network restrictions and Motorola's lockdown on the device, I'm going to have to say that I am disappointed in the Atrix as of now. That could change if there is a break through in the bootloader or if AT&T gets its act together and starts offering the "High speeds" we were promised. Only problem is though, my 30 days is almost up and I don't know if I can hold onto the phone in hopes of "potential".
Coming from a captivate I love this phone...everything works includi.g the gps. Most of motoblur is gone on my phone. The phone is amazingly fast but does have an occasional hiccup. An unlocked bootloader would turn this into the best available android phone but its one of the top

Yeah, I'm high up on the fence because if I do return it I am going to switch carriers as well.
I'm really enjoying it... coming from a Tilt2, it's a major upgrade. Straight out of the box, it's very enjoyable... I'm not dissapointed at all.. it's only going to get better once they get this beast unleashed
Camera is quick and decent.
GPS is amazingly fast...
Browser is snappy and loads everything great
WiFi is a little weak...
and I actually like the screen.. It's not best screen ever made, but it's actually a very nice display.
I was getting terrible battery life, but somehow a hard-reset solved that problem, and i'm able to get more than a day of heavy use no problem.
Just picked up a second one for the wife (coming from an iphone 3g) and she's really enjoying it a lot as well
I like the Atrix. I upgraded from an iPhone 3G. I realize that it's not the best it can be as far as unlocking right now, but it is better than what I had. I only wish I could afford the webtop dock right now for times I'm on the road. Nothing a netbook couldn't fix though.
as far as the battery, it really has to do with what you're doing. I've seen mine go 39 hours over a weekend with normal use, or 16 hours when i'm streaming pandora constantly at work. My building for work also isn't great for signal, so the phone is constantly working for signal, which uses battery.
The other day i did ~5 hours of pandora at work, then fired up the GPS, which was on for ~1.5 hours guiding me, screen on, not plugged in. few phone calls and web use and it was almost dead after 15 hours.
This phone is miles better than the aria i had before it, and it will only get better as more things are updated to take advantage of the tegra 2 platform. Won't matter if this phone gets cracked or not, it will get better and better for a while either way.

Wow... 39 hours. I get about 17 hours of use from it, which is much better than any other smartphones I've ever used so I'm happy... but I can't imagine hitting that number. I do have bluetooth and wifi on all the time.
I like my Atrix, the only problems i see is that the webtop is very limited, but some people over the developer section are working on that, and also the speeds which since T-Mobile was bought it definitely will become faster alongside with HSPA+ and LTE being utilized together. It has lots of potential to run REALLY great, but this is the first phone of its kind, it'll always have problems in the beginning.

and that cuts the battery way down. powering all the radios is a large power drain. I never turn on a radio i don't need, so 90% of the time wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc are off. Mobile data is always on, and i i never try and tell it to revert to 2g.

see... i wish i had that same kind of success.
It's always hard to determine battery life from these posts because people's definition of "moderate" and "heavy" usage differ a lot. This is why it would be nice if the phone had gingerbread where the battery plot actually shows the wake time, wifi time, signal strenth, display on, etc. so people could quote their results rather than just guestimating. The best way to tell is really just display on time since that's pretty much the biggest draw.
Based on my limited testing I can get about 4-5 hours of display on time with auto brightness. The absolute best I could squeeze out of my nexus S is almost 4 hours which is to be expected since it's 1930mah vs. 1500mah. I MIGHT do some battery drain tests before I return the Atrix but I'm not sure... those take time. I know the Nexus S can go about 7-8 hours playing a video while in airplane mode so I'm wondering what the Atrix could achieve.

We do have all those indicators in the Battery manager. I average about 13-14 hours with 3-4 hours of display, unless i'm doing something like streaming March Madness via flash, then it drops to like 7 hours with 2-3 hours of display.
Love it.
Honestly out of all the phones i've had this is the main one.
Screen great looking.
Speed is unreal and I mean like lightening fast :O
The games and apps that work just look and run crazy good!
Camera imo is great not going to replace main cameras but great for stills and videos, would be nice to see the 1080p recording update out soon though
Motoblur stuff which I like :O lol can be frozen and a custom launcher introduced without you even thinking about the motoblur lag.
Battery life is very good I can get a whole day at college 8:30 until 6 heavy usage and still get home with 30-40% left which is great to me
Fingerprint reader is also a great little feature that gets yours friends a little jealous lol
Only thing I don't like is the battery door creaks, I know its nothing major but its just a little annoyance other than that the build quality is great very sleek device!
I'm really bored with my Atrix there's no developement community. You can't do **** with a locked bootloader. Even the iphone is more open than this pos. It's going back tommorrow **** motorola.

I'm a firm believer in the "garbage in, garbage out" philosophy. Yes this phone has one or two legitimate issues (touch screen acting up after x seconds continuous touch), but for the most part is good. How many apps do you have installed? How many do you actually use? Every month i clean out my phone of apps that haven't been used in a couple weeks. I usually see a little bump in battery life each time since less apps are itching to use the data connection or other resources.
how many widgets are you running? I don't really notice it on the Atrix, but on my aria when i had 5 home screens riddled with widgets, it was laggy and slow. Drop it down to 2 screens with a simple setup, and it was snappy.
My point is, most of the time, little issues are probably user generated. I see it all the time with computers. But it's way easier to blame the hardware and software than look for the cause of your problem. again, i'm not down playing the few legitimate issues.
next time i pull a 39hour run i'll post specifics of what i was using it for in the battery thread.
I'm very happy with mine. I don't have much of a desire to put a custom ROM on, so the locked bootloader isn't an issue. The speed of this device is just levels beyond my Nexus One. I can't remember a time so far where I've had any lag. Plus, I don't have to worry about app space the way I did with the N1.
I dunno, must just be me but I completely love this phone.
I'm going to be soon getting either the 4g FFC or the revision 2 FFC. Have not completely decided yet. ( I already have v1 of the FFC and I'm fine with how it acts... I don't often take pictures in the dark, ha.)
With the v1 FFC and bionix 1.3.1 with overstock. The phone is very responsive.. I do get a slight lag in between downloading and installing stages of getting apps, but that's far from the end of the world for me.
Besides that this phone is honestly perfect! I don't know what more I could want from a phone, haha.
I have the exact same setup you do, and the exact same experience. Aside from the GPS hiccups, this is quite possibly the best phone I've used. SAMoled is simply amazing and will keep me from switching phones when all the dual-cores come out. Plus, I know it's a small difference, but 4.3" just seems too big. My buddy has a droid x, and that thing is a monster!

This is definitely a great phone with tons of possibilities.
A solid gps and a flash for the camera
I never have gps problems, lag, or any of the usual things people complain about. I do not feel it's cheaply made, and it's a perfect size in an otterbox.
The only areas of improvement I can see are an FFC (which can be added), 4G capabilities, camera flash, and tweaking it more. A phone can never be too fast or too good on battery life.
The biggest thing that needs improving is the speed at getting updates and source from Samsung.

Flash... well ya knew it didn't have flash when you went to get it, so... yeah.
I love this phone. It's tough , even though it feels light and wimpy. It's super fast, the screen is beautiful and there's so many ROMs and mods to customize it the way you like it that I'm never bored with it.

I never understood the cheap feeling people got from it either, and I had a hd2 that is supposed to be the best build quality in a phone, my vibrant may not be that solid, but hell, its solid....
It's plastic and yea it feels cheap. The HD2 is in another dimension. It does feel cheap, but that's nothing a Body Glove or Otterbox case can't fix trivially.
The battery and GPS is a bigger issue, though... Both of those are terrible. If I take my Vibrant off the charger and never use it, 30% of the time the phone will drain to nothing in 4 hours. I have no clue how it's doing it, why it's doing it. The battery is good (I've tried a brand new Stock Samsung OEM battery replacement) and it still happens. It has the most Volatile Battery Life I've ever experienced in a Mobile Phone, or any mobile device, ever...
A couple months ago I went to Houston for a couple days and forgot to take my Wall Charger... I ended up having to plug my phone into the Samsung HDTV in the room becasue the battery was dying all over the place. I had to stand there tethered to a television just to use my phone. Wanted to talk? Go to the TV. Check your Twitter/Email? You know where to go...
Even on the car charger, the phone would barely charge. I was basically < 50% charge 90% of the time I was there, and even had to turn my phone off for like 3-4 hours when I was getting stuff done to make sure it didn't die on me.
That is something I had never experienced using my Windows Mobile (6.5) devices or Aria, and the HD7 doesn't do this. The Blackberry Bold I tried out for a couple weeks could go 2-3 days with extremely heavy usage on one charge, and charged fast as ****... Even on a Car Charger while being used.
The GPS in the Vibrant was constantly putting me on the wrong road, or on the service road when I was on the other side of the Interstate. At intersections, the GPS would bug out and it would take it upwards of 1-2 minutes to straighten itself out.
Back to the battery. I think the cell radio is killing it. When the phone is on WiFi, it can work about 18-24 hours before it you have to turn it off, because it's not using the cell radio for anything. So, I think a lot of people who say their battery is so good are probably on WiFi most of the time, and likely don't make that many phone calls.
As far as updates are concerned, KA6 was a hail mary and I think Samsung would like to not have this phone even be mentioned in headlines, since those same articles will just remind potential buyers of their other phones just how terrible their Android support/updating actually is. They want to move on. They even bothered to miff up the Software on their WP7 devices. If Samsung touches any software, they will make sure they find a way to miff it up.

One quick remark on what you said regarding Cell drainage vs. Wifi, that's just not true. At least in my case it isn't.
Today for example I took my phone off the charger about 8 a.m and by the time I walked out of uni 8 hours later I had 78% left. All this while making about a total of 70 minutes of calls not to mention a couple of texts.
Now when I reached home I turned on my wifi and started doing my net business, that got me to 15% in less than 4 hours. Without doing any calls/texts in the process.
What more could I want in a phone?
How about no interface or response lag? I'm running Bionix V 1.3.1 with Voodoo lagfix enable, and there's still some lag in the response.
I'd also like the GPS to work every time with accuracy at least matching my 2+ year old G1.
you guys are not thinking this through.....

As some of you might have read, the EVO 3D seems to have fallen short in two areas that I consider to be the most important: display quality, and battery life. The display, albeit having great resolution, have been critiqued by many reviewers for having horrible viewing angles. Even the Optimus 3D which sports a 3D display doesn't suffer the same fate. What a shame!
If that's not enough, the battery life seems to be pretty bad as well. Maybe not too bad, but definitely not anywhere that some of us were hoping.
Contrastingly, the Samsung SG2 has the best display bar-none. Battery life has been praised left and right. And the camera is the best one out there. If that's not enough, check out the form factor.
That being said, who has changed their minds in respect to replacement for their EVO? I know I have. I just hope that the SG2 arrives at Sprint sooner than later.

Where are you hearing battery life is bad. From the reviews I have read, I feel the battery life is pretty decent.

Yeah hadn't read battery life was bad. Heck one of the reviews said they lasted over 9hrs about with WiMax on all day and shooting 3d videos and photos all day long. Thats pretty dang solid if you ask me.
As far as the display? GTFO
This isnt your LCD/LED/Plasma TV in your home. this is your freaking phone! viewing angles should matter 0 on phones. your not having your phone set up with a dang viewing party around it sitting in chairs watching movies. If you are then you got issues. Only viewing angle that matters is straight on!
I'm definitely holding out on the SGII at this point. I even saw that the retail units of the 3D have locked bootloaders. Lame.
My EVO is serving me well, I'm using my upgrade on something else. I want to see what phones are out by the holiday season.
"In general, the 1730 mAh battery seems to less less than six hours sticking to 4G and less than a full day over (10 hours or so in regular use) without. Call quality was okay — not great, but okay."

"This prototype was buggy and had abysmal battery life, but it was real."
"Which brings us to battery life, or the lack thereof. After topping off the EVO 3D, it only took 14 hours and 44 minutes to drain the beefy 1730mAh battery down to 7%. We barely used the handset during that time -- we made a 15-minute call and slept 6 hours. The rest of it was spent taking a half-dozen pictures, and occasionally checking three email accounts plus one Twitter account with all the radios enabled (save for Bluetooth). This is particularly surprising when you consider the Sensation's stellar battery life. 3D photography is particularly taxing on the battery. We saw the charge level drop from full to 60% in about an hour and a half during which we snapped about 80 photos and captured four short videos (about half of this content was in 3D). So, whatever you do, be prepared to bring a charger along with that EVO 3D."

Doesn't sound too encouraging to me... I refuse getting anything that doesn't comfortably get me a full day with heavy use. The SG2 does it, the iPhone easily does it... C'mon, it's 2011! No excuses!

Not sure what a mute point is but until it's unlocked it's an issue. Who knows if it'll be unlocked on launch day. It may be weeks for an OTA to address it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA engadget.
Read the comments on their review.
God thank you for the guy who mentioned viewing angles. What kinda person turns their SMARTPHONE at 70 degrees to use it? That's like eating a bowl of cereal with the bowl turned 70 degrees. It doesn't work because that's retarded.
The bootloaders are unlocked, I have seen several actual phones with unlocked bootloaders.
Even the garbage engadet review said with ALL radios on the phone lasted 14 hours, after taking 80?! 3D pics. Woah, that's awesome battery life. If a smart human being was in control and knew what battery conservation/radio control were, the phone would last an extremely long time.

That guy be me
can't agree more. Viewing angles only matter with your home TV's.
Ppl have issues if they are setting the phone up on a table and then playing a movie while their friends all sit in chairs around it watching. Thats the only reason to complain about viewing angles.
As was said it's a mute point. It depends on if the bootloader Is signed/encrypted which htc has said they will not do. The phone will still need to be rooted.
As far as battery life my incredible with a 1750 mah extended battery doesn't go more then six hours with heavy use. This isn't a calculator. This is a computer with a processor as strong as my old laptop. Learn to think for yourself. Nor every review will be perfect in all areas

LOL, so you determined all of this by reading a review. Well I can post you 6 other reviews who are total opposite of everything you just typed. So at the end of the day that means what????
Either someone has no idea what they are talking about, or someone is just a bit biased or a combination of the two. Bottom line is proof is seeing for yourself before you start talking about 2 areas falling short when you have no idea.
If you want the SGS2 go ahead and get it when/if it shows up in a store. But nothing you wrote would persuade me from getting what it is that I want.

I don't understand why so many of you are getting so angry about a phone that none of you own right now.
