Hey, guys. I'm about to root my Nook Color and flash either an AOPS ROM or a Galaxy tablet ported ROM if I can find one. I want to do some penetration testing with my Nook, but I know that running Backtrack off the SD card will read as ethernet (eth0) and not allow you to use aircrack-ng or reaver. I know that Neopwn can packet inject off the SD card as well as tons of other goodies, so I want to install it legitimately but the site says Samsung Galaxy products only. Is there a distribution anywhere for the Nook? Would it work if I flashed a ported Galaxy ROM? Does anyone know of a way to install Neopwn on a Nook Color? BTW, I only have experience in rooting phones; I've never rooted a tablet before, and don't want to bother if I can't get some "big boy" penetration testing tools/software on it. Any thoughts? Suggestions?
I appreciate any help guys,
Mark
I don't know of any galaxy tab Roms for the Nook, but if you find one, please tell me. If neopwn works, give it a shot. I'd like to see that working.

When you said "Rooting my B&N Nook Color (1.2.0)", you actually have no choice but only one option, that is using ManuallyNook, with whatever version, sorry can't help since I didn't root my device.
Other options are installing and running CM7 or the a-like onto eMMC (aka internal memory) or from an external uSD card.

thank you for your reply and i did say thanks/rep
but i know there are things like.....
Froyo (Android 2.2), Honeycomb (Android 3.0 & 3.1), CM7 and ManualNooter 4.6.16 and i just have no idea what would work best for what i want
If you don't care about the stock OS cm7 is the best way to go.

Use the SD card method by verygreen. Get yourself a class 2. 8 gig sandisk and boot cm7. This way here if ( and I use if lightly) you want to revert back to stock just remove the card. Verygreens post can be found on the development page under size agnostic.

1. Froyo, HC are OS
2. CM7 is Gingerbread-based OS, custom ROM.
3. ManualNooter is a tool to unlock the NC stock OS
So, if you want to keep and use the stock OS (in this case, Froyo) and want to utilize its full capability, you then "unlock" it using ManualNooter.
If you don't care about the stock OS, you then can install/running other custom ROM such CM7, HC, ...
[Q] Why do updates of some apps say "your device is not compatible with this item"?
Background: I have a Color Nook running Cyanogenmod 7 from an SD card, and when I installed the OS a couple of months ago, (V. 7.1-RC), it worked fine, and I also installed v. 2.6 of the Nook eReader app for Android, which also works fine.
Today I acquired a second Color Nook, and used the exact same files that I used before and installed Cyanogenmod 7 on the new nook, using the exact same SD card, the preferred SanDisk 8Gb class 4. The OS seemed to work just like it does on the other Nook, but then I tried to download and install the Nook eReader app, I found that it has been upgraded to 2.7, which provides the "your device is not compatible with this item" message. I have found other upgrades which behave similarly, such as ES file manager, and Chess Free from AI.
I have found references to a "fix" for this problem which involve a re-format of one of the partitions, using Clockworkmod, which I do not wish to install because it goes onto the internal memory and interferes with normal stock OS upgrades.
So is there any action I can take to get these upgrades to work on my Color Nook? And what causes this situation? Are the upgrades developed for a more advanced version of Android, and not designed to work on version 2.3? Thanks for any information anyone can provide for an android newbie!
Furthermore, when I try to upgrade the apps on the first Color Nook, I get the same message! So the problem seems more likely to be in the app than in my tablet.
Upgrade to a nightly above 200 or search market fix. Sooo many threads on this....

It worked!
Thanks so much for this information. As I mentioned, I am new at this, and I guess I didn't know where to look to find out the latest news. I installed nightly build 214, and EVERYTHING works as I expect it to.
I did a google search of "market fix", but didn't find any reference to this fix. And I gather that the solution has come rather recently if it takes a build with number 200 or greater to fix it, since that build was released on 23 September 2011.
Sometimes the key to finding answers is to pick the right keywords to search for. Any suggestions on some good ones? And maybe I just didn't look in the right places. There seem to be several groups doing android development, and there are several ways to "root" a color nook.
And thanks immensely to koopakid08 for answering in this thread so that I could solve my problem! I have already clicked on his "thanks" button, twice even!
The right place to search would be right here at XDA.

Hello. I have had a Kindle fire since Jan of this year. It has been my first tablet/android device. I've had a great time playing with it, learning about rooting, bricking and unbricking thanx to this awesome forum and really want to express my gratitude for all the help provided by this site.
I am a medical student and I bought the device specifically for an app for my licensing exam. I feel like I have one last hurdle to overcome in understanding how to manipulate this device, that being a method of altering the way that the market apps recognizes the kindle. I have seen various mods that cause the device to show up differently.
My question is: what is the best mod to facilitate this and only this?
-I have everything as I like it so I prefer one that changes only this aspect.
Thanks a thousand times in advance.
Edit the build.prop file if you know how to, just change the model name to another device like the Galaxy Tab or something and you'll have a bunch more apps in the market.
Just use the modified build.prop from THIS thread and you will be all set.
thanks guys. I've read about build.prop. Gonna check out this link
I read through that link. It only supports CM7. I have had both CM7 and CM9 and prefer stock + go launcher. Do you know of any preset build.prop's that support stock?
edit: Obviously didnt read far enough, here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439916
I will test it out then update. Thanks again!
edit2: Modaco Gr6 is the mod to flash for those seeking to run stock vs. CM7/CM9. I got access to the file I needed and many other apps. I dont think i am seeing the entire android market though.
Hi all
I am trying to install ICS on my Verizon original Galaxy Tab. I have rooted it. and it's running galaxy cubed. (actually a friend did this so i don't know exactly what he did) we found several different roms for ICS but none worked.
Does anyone have any idea? or know how to do this?
oops
oh yeah i have cmw 2 running. i think i need a newer version of this. any idea where i can find that? i am really new at this! thanks for any help
Good to see more users on here with sch-i800. I have 2 of them one i put cm9.1 and the other is having some issues which i am trying to resolve. You can get cm9.1 stable you can get it from http://get.cm. The Verizon tab it the p1c also download the gapps from http://goo.im/gapps. you will need these 2 files to get things working properly with ics on your verizon galaxy tab. You need CMW 5 or better to flash it. i suggest following this guide to get to cm9 http://geekniggle.blogspot.com/2011/12/loading-ice-cream-sandwich-on-verizon.html
if you have any futher questions please feel free to ask.
thanks
Thanks! I have ICS up and running and love it so far. However the TV out doesnt recognize the cable any more. Do you know a way to resolve this or is it the bug i have to deal with?
thanks again for your help!
ok.. So I am asking... lol
Let me start off by saying I am extremely new to this whole process, but I do have a SCH-I800 and I would like to see about updating it. and I noticed on the post you had a link to an blog posting on a guide to do this, but that link doesn't seem to work. Any chance I could get that link from you? I am not sure what all the abbreviations are listed below (CMW5, p1c, etc). Does this "guide" also tell you what you need to download to make this work?
Thanks for helping a Newbie out...
I have had the tab since May 2011 and have ran every Rom imaginable. I never could get the video out to work on any cyanogenmod roms. I am back to running 2.3.4 rooted since it seems to run smoother and everything works.

Can I obtain all of the stock apk's that come with an unrooted NST? I want to see if I can run an NST environment on my CM7 NookColor. If I can get these apk's I will make a custom firmware for the NST.
And yes, I have an NST.

Download the latest firmware from B&N and pull the apk's from there. You also might want to join the NST CM7 thread.

Alright then. I'll be compiling this firmware if you need me!

You're not going to be able to get the unmodified Reader.apk or ReaderRMSDK.apk to run.
They use android.hardware.EpdController
You'll have to either stub in the class or modify the apk.
Alright. I read this message while I was having issues with them. Ill try to fix them manually. Thank you.

I successfully unzipped the firmware download on a windows machine, but I no longer have access to it. When I try to extract the files from the Zip on my mac, it cycles through zips and tar.gz's infinetly. When I try to extract it on my NC with rom toolbox, it says, "failed to extract tmp.zip"
Any suggestions?

After flashing (with CWM) what I would have posted as alpha-1 to test it, I am pleased to say that the Nook Simple Touch just sucks.
What happened:
I built the ROM entirely from Eclair source-code and the Nook's stock software. I flash the ROM to test it and BAM, bricked. I looked over what I had built again, and again, and EVERYTHING should have worked. (Yes, I checked superuser, etc.) Frustrated, I recompiled the majority of the firmware, and reflashed, after restoring to pure stock. This time, it boots to the Android Launcher, which is what I intended, but then, I click on The Android Market Icon, and it says: "Barnes & Noble permissions breach detected, factory resetting." It shuts down, boots up without resetting and then when booted says that Android Launcher, System UI, etc. Has crashed, reboots, factory resets (???), and then boots up to the Nook welcome screen. I skip OOBE, and factory reset once more.
Now, I am selling this useless Ereader, and will use the money to contribute to the purchase of a Nook HD, which now ships with Google play installed. With the Nook HD, I wont have to deal with this crap, because it is a TABLET unlike the Nook Simple Touch, which is and will always be, just a black and white Reader.

Hello Mineturtle33, as I wrote in the other thread,
First of all I want to really say you thanks for your efforts trying to port CM7 to our Nook Touchs...
I and more people like me appreciate very much your work, and we know the how useful would be updating our Nook Touch to Android 2.3 because every day more, developers cut support and compatibility for older Android versions like the our...
I known it's only a BW tablet, but I thinks that in its area is still the best, the only with maybe limited but support for apk, only missing with newer apps is the flaw.
So in name of mine and many people like me on this and the another forum I say to you: Please don't give up!
At the moment you seems the only with the knowledge that can reach it.
I will also be pleased also to make a symbolic offer of the 25$ if instead of sell your nook, you can just make some more try on it.
Count me also for beta-testing also if dangerous
You are our only hope

Thank you for your support. I just want to let you know, I will keep trying, though, release #1 will most likely be Android 2.1. When we make progress on porting CM7, I promise that I will do a 2.3 release. While thinking about what I will name this ROM it popped into my head, SnowMOD? (since it's white) Is that a good name? Anybody else have name ideas? I will make an official progress thread later. Don't worry about give ng me 25$. I don't really need it.
I can test the new custom rom once significant progress is made.
