Can I obtain all of the stock apk's that come with an unrooted NST? I want to see if I can run an NST environment on my CM7 NookColor. If I can get these apk's I will make a custom firmware for the NST.
And yes, I have an NST.

Download the latest firmware from B&N and pull the apk's from there. You also might want to join the NST CM7 thread.

Alright then. I'll be compiling this firmware if you need me!

You're not going to be able to get the unmodified Reader.apk or ReaderRMSDK.apk to run.
They use android.hardware.EpdController
You'll have to either stub in the class or modify the apk.
Alright. I read this message while I was having issues with them. Ill try to fix them manually. Thank you.

I successfully unzipped the firmware download on a windows machine, but I no longer have access to it. When I try to extract the files from the Zip on my mac, it cycles through zips and tar.gz's infinetly. When I try to extract it on my NC with rom toolbox, it says, "failed to extract tmp.zip"
Any suggestions?

After flashing (with CWM) what I would have posted as alpha-1 to test it, I am pleased to say that the Nook Simple Touch just sucks.
What happened:
I built the ROM entirely from Eclair source-code and the Nook's stock software. I flash the ROM to test it and BAM, bricked. I looked over what I had built again, and again, and EVERYTHING should have worked. (Yes, I checked superuser, etc.) Frustrated, I recompiled the majority of the firmware, and reflashed, after restoring to pure stock. This time, it boots to the Android Launcher, which is what I intended, but then, I click on The Android Market Icon, and it says: "Barnes & Noble permissions breach detected, factory resetting." It shuts down, boots up without resetting and then when booted says that Android Launcher, System UI, etc. Has crashed, reboots, factory resets (???), and then boots up to the Nook welcome screen. I skip OOBE, and factory reset once more.
Now, I am selling this useless Ereader, and will use the money to contribute to the purchase of a Nook HD, which now ships with Google play installed. With the Nook HD, I wont have to deal with this crap, because it is a TABLET unlike the Nook Simple Touch, which is and will always be, just a black and white Reader.

I known it's only a BW tablet, but I thinks that in its area is still the best, the only with maybe limited but support for apk, only missing with newer apps is the flaw.

Thank you for your support. I just want to let you know, I will keep trying, though, release #1 will most likely be Android 2.1. When we make progress on porting CM7, I promise that I will do a 2.3 release. While thinking about what I will name this ROM it popped into my head, SnowMOD? (since it's white) Is that a good name? Anybody else have name ideas? I will make an official progress thread later. Don't worry about give ng me 25$. I don't really need it.
I can test the new custom rom once significant progress is made.

Every recovery has a kernel in it. It needs that to work properly. The kernel inside of it though can be different then the one you use with Android.
Seems to work perfectly. Thanks!

I'm with this guy, though I must say that I appreciate the effort from randomblame. Following the rules and doing things properly leads to things that WORK properly. Thor's roms and recovery have issues, however useful they may be.
Great!
I have other android devices and was turned off by some people in the a500 community not following the law (by not complying with software licenses). I thought XDA had a policy about that, but maybe it is not applied to everyone.
As a software developer my self (mainly non-android) I was shocked by the actions of those parties breaking the law.
It is great to see people stepping up to fix the problem. Thanks for your work.
EDIT: I see people are removing thor's links from forum posts. Thats good. I remember seeing several over the past 6 months, maybe I saw them before they were removed. It is good to see people taking piracy seriously.

ok so i flashed over the Phiremod Miui and got constant process.android.acore force closes..like every 10 seconds...i turned off my sync, but left background on and that slowed down the force closes...and of course there is the market issue as well...
it kinda bums me out because i like the MIUI rom...but yeah....anyone out there know of a fix for it?....i dug around in quite a few forums looking and couldn't find anything
i'm bumping this because i am still wondering if anyone has any input whatsoever...
I will reply. I put off responding because for the most part, people don't swear in their posts on this forum. Clean up your act.
2nd, there are threads in the development section for each rom which would address your problem if you would read them.
Nevertheless, when I flash a new rom I always format data, system and cache in clockwork mod recovery. Even tho some say you don't have to, I have found that it leads to a much better install.
I would not install any MIUI rom right now as there are problems with the market. I have not found a decent fix.
Standard cm7 or the MiRage roms are probably best for you.
Cm9 still has glitches that I don't think you are ready to handle (based on your experience with phiremods Miui).
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
Well i censored myself but that was mainly out of frustration, I usually have been able to fix most of my problems with any of my android devices...and this one was stumping me. I know there are separate threads in the dev section...but i did not have the allotted post count to post in those threads and did not want to spam a bunch of threads.
So, yeah i'm waiting on CM9 to get less buggy, simply because i want to use my NC as well as modify it, I prefer stable builds to testing or nightlies...I've been through that experience with a couple phones and it did not turn out well.
One of these days i'm going to jump in the deep end and try developing...but, as the rest of you. i'm quite busy when offline..
anyway, thank you for your input...
Apology accepted. Sounds like you know your way around android. But here are some suggestions if you are set on using Phiremods rom.
Again, in the mounts and storage section of recovery, format data, system and cache. Back out and do factory reset/wipe. I know people have said this is not necessary, but I have had problems when I have not done this.
Make sure you are using phiremods gapps. Standard cm7 ones won't work.
The market will fc. That is a given. You can uninstall updates to a certain point, then it will fc anyway.
I love the miui roms myself and am so sad that there is no new development on them for the nook.
I am using MiRage rom currently and am happy with it. I have also flashed samiams's cm9 and loved it but until they find a way to up the resolution and get video going, its not a daily driver for me.
If you are still having problems, post your install precedure and I'll see if I can help

When I have the time to backup and possibly restore at least
Was wondering if any of the devs here could possibly spend some time to develop for the a200 as it is similar to the a500?
Our boot loader is unlocked
We are rooted
And we have cwm.
Just need some custom rom love such as cm9,aokp and so on.
I am not a dev but have comp programming knowledge if you need any files from the a200 I would be happy to share.
What do you mean we have CWM??
Is there something I missed?
But I do agree, we need our own section along with some custom ROMs!!

Flash CWM? Follow this link!
Well, creating your own simple roms isn't all that difficult. It's just hard to do when you don't have an a200 to test with. But the theory behind it is all the same.
If you guys want to try it yourself, let me know, and I'll share what I know about it. Seeing's you're already rooted and CWM installed, should be safe
I wouldn't mind having a deodexed rom. I would do it myself but not sure if I have the time with how much I work. Unless it's not that hard to do. I just can't wait until I can theme this device. Already have all the .png's ready...

Not sure about how to pull the boot image.
But the files from a "rooted" system dump would be great. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that earlier.
The issue, is that the root app they published, flashes the boot.image in 2 parts. And they're modified. This results in a modified boot.image in your tab when you run the root. Would be easier to have a complete modified image.
Well, never de-compiled and recompiled an image before, so will figure it out Maybe!
The rest, can probably be run from the install script as far as permissions and such.

Ok, just to update you, I sent out a test version this morning. Mainly to make sure I got the install-script right with permissions and stuff. No other changes other than removing the usual bad stuff.
If, and I say "if" it goes well, then I can proceed on stripping the heck outta it.
If not, I have an alternate plan.
Ok, need 1 or 2 of you people to try this install. All the bad stuff is taken out. At the worst, it will bootloop at start.
If it boots, check Su for write and re-write on the /system. Copy a file, see if it sticks. Then delete it.
Root explorer added to /data/app so check permissions.
Make sure you do your recovery backup first,
Then wipes and such like a normal rom.

Background
As a bit of background, I publicly posted ROMs on PPCGeeks for the HTC Touch w/WinMo several years ago. Since then, I continue to develop ROMs primarily for family and friends on the EVO4G, LG Optimus, Acer A500, and of course the HP TouchPad. After an initial testing period by a group of volunteers here at XDA (thank you, thank you, thank you), I have decided to publicly release this ROM. I hope you enjoy it.
Philosophy and Acknowledgements
My emphasis has always been on a very light and fast ROM that leaves plenty of room for one's own apps and customizations. My HP TouchPad ROM is based on a very stripped down KANG of the latest CM9 version (big thanks to Dalingrin, JCSullins, and all the other TPad devs that have brought this capability to us) that supports HW Video (meaning Netflix and HD YouTube) and all the other goodies you have come to know and love.
In addition there are also a few other treats thrown in, primarily,
the recently released QualComm adreno 2xx drivers,
the init.d tweaks published by Rohan,
the new ath6kl wifi drivers being incorporated into the 3.0 kernel,
the new HD Tablet launcher by the "Go" folks.
Big thanks to all the folks associated with these for their generosity in publicly providing these tweaks. Finally, I also employ a very stripped down version of the latest version of GApps that I will also link to. You can use the full version of GApps found elsewhere, but that will then somewhat defeat the intent of this ROM. The attached pics will give you some idea of what to expect. The benchmarks are all "typical" of the results I get on a non-overclocked CPU running at ~1.2GHz.
Updates
In terms of updates, I actually build the ROM and the kernel almost on a daily basis so my older AMD quadcore isn't tortured with having to handle an extraordinary number of new commits. But that doesn't mean I flash almost daily. It all depends on what looks significant, if I really want to try something new, or if I'm just bored . You can find out what's new in the below "News" section of this OP to find out what's the latest on my front.
Flashing and .apk's
Of course, all the standard cautions about doing the necessary backups (nandroids, titanium, or my backup) and the requirement for a complete set of wipes/formats (data, cache, system, dalvik) apply. Actually, I only find it necessary to wipe cache and dalvik between flashes of my own ROM. I also flash Gapps anew after each ROM flash. If you like experimenting with the other available ROMs, I advise a complete set of wipes and formats. And of course, you are flashing at your own risk.
Any .apk's included below need to be placed in the system/app directory with a rooted file manager, e.g. es file explorer, ensuring the permissions are the same as other .apk's in that directory, followed by a reboot. Unless, otherwise noted.

Wow! No wifi at all, ever? Have you tried adb'ing files from your computer into your tablet? Guess I could include a file explorer as an app that could be uninstalled, but this seems a rather extreme situation. Any others facing this dilemma?

Hey oat. First, hope to see you publish this to everyone, second, if you are compiling from source you can fork the file explorer from me/US if you want. It has such a small footprint on the Rom and would help those who need it.

Thanks for the encouraging words and thanks for the offer. I do build from source and early on included a file manager. I haven't lately as the taste for file managers among myself, friends and family changes routinely. I would only need to update that file and reactivate a few lines in the build script to get it back in.

only hic-upsi had was videos on youtube site didn't load in chrome browser, and my wifi froze for literally 5 seconds. either than that, i've had no problems.
i'll report on how battery life is tomorrow, and which if any apps give me trouble, cause i like using a new rom all day, and see how battery life compares to a fresh recharge

OK…I have finally gotten my ASUS TF300T unlocked, I have TWRP flashed, and I can now install a custom ROM to my tablet. I would like to thank everyone for helping me out with accomplishing this task; I would especially like to thank diesburg, who went out of his way to walk me thru the process!
So, as a total noob, I tried to load the CYANOGENMOD. I tried versions 10.0 and 10.1. When neither version would load, I read a bit more and found that my tablet will not load either due to incompatibility with the bootloader. The 10.1 simply fails, and the 10.1 loads, but will not boot (hangs up on bootscreen).
My tablet is as follows:
JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416.
JB 4.2.1
My question is; are there any workarounds for using this ROM, which was really the reason for my undertaking this task, or is there is stable ROM that is recommended?

What version of TWRP are you using? I installed CROMI Xeno on my tablet and have no issues, only thing I was looking for was smaller DPI.

I'm running twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob
I don't see a AOKP ROM for use, Cyanogen won't work. So, I am running out of STABLE ROM options. LOL!

cromi-x is the way to go mate i use it with that's kernel and ive never had a single random reboot so you cant beat that for stability mate
The big question is why are you going for cyan? What does it have that you want?
Good question,
I see the speed, customization, and stability. I am not enthralled by the ASUS firmware, and wanted to try something different. Cyanogenmod seems to be one of the more popular and stable ROMS.
Is there something I am missing or something else I should try? I am very open to suggestions. I am very new to this entire ROM thing, so, that is why I need all the help I can get.

I would still suggest Cromi-x mate its stock based but its in a league of its own and sbdags and the guys here give great support for it too

which version should I be downloading and loading with my build? I noticed a ton of versions.
My tablet is ASUS TF300T
JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416.
JB 4.2.1
It depends on what you like. Cromi x has a lot of under the hood tweaks that don't change user interface much. I liked it more compared to stock, but I like the other Roms, such as baked, aokp, and especially carbon Roms more because these offer stability and speed but also a looot of features not found in stock based Roms. Carbon has a lot of customization. Plus it has an overclock kernel in it. So its fast!

I haven't found AOKP for the TF300T. I am wanting to try a custom ROM on this machine to see what it can really do.
Stability and ease of use is my primary goal. I don't like the all the CRAP that is associated with this stock ROM, but I imagine it would be much quicker if all that was taken out.
I guess the key is, I can try a bunch, but I want something I don't have to play with too much. More or less, a daily driver.
Yeah im using CM as a daily driver, since I rarely update it. For the most part, it is stable, but I need to now upgrade my bootloader for the newer nightlies.

i think I like a few of the ROM's I saw. I like the CROMI-X mod, and would like to run this mod for awhile and see how it operates for me.
The problem, I don't know exactly what version to load with my machine. My tablet is ASUS TF3000T JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416. JB 4.2.1. It's rooted, unlocked, TWRP is loaded. I mean, honestly, I am ready to rock this TF300!!!
As I read, I know that if I load the wrong mod, or the wrong version, I can brick my machine. This is not the desire outcome...lol!
Help on this load if someone can "chime in".
Thanks all!!

The CROMI-X uses the firmware you currently have. The only choice you have to make is whether you want ODEX or DEODEX. Theres an explantion link on the post that explains the differences. I use DEODEX.
Not sure if you have stated what TWRP version you are running, but with the firmware you have, you should be running 2.5.0.0-4.2-JB. That will cause you to no to be able to install ROMs successfully

I'm running twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob, so, I am gonna try this today. I will download the CROMi-Xenogenesis ODEX 4.7.0_Signed.zip.
I think, as a beginner, this is a good starting point for me.
Thoughts?
Nah man ive flashed nearly all the latest versions of cromi-x (all the odex version and some of the deodexed ones) and 4.7.0 is where its at, disable fsync and then just sit back and see and this should run

CROMI-X loaded VERY well. I am playing with the customization now. I still have alot to learn!
Thanks EVERYONE for all the help! I am happy knowing I finally able to be able to do this. I could not have gotten it done without all the guidance!

thats what were here for mate if you need anything else just ask
Thanks robgee! Everyone has actually been great. Trust me, I am a TOTAL "user" type. I simply hate all the crap that affects speed and efficiency in the technology I have at my disposal! =) This stuff should fly, almost as fast as I think I want something...lol!
So, as I am playing with this ROM, I am finding I like the speed, I like the freedom to customize. Exactly was what I was wanting to do.
Now, I get to throw out the next question. I am finding a problem with APPS downloading. I cannot download APPS from the Playstore. I get a (495) error or, the download just hangs up and never downloads. I did a new flash, and the same thing occurs. Is there a setting I am missing??
Thoughts?
Scar!
there are two things that spring to mind mate first is remove your google account then add it again (this works if the play store on your pc dosent let you pick your tf300 to install apps) the second is try flashing the ccs store patch if you didnt change your dpi, did you choose to disable fsync mate?
also did you pick the right build (us for us and ww for everywhere else)
When I was flashing, there was a checkbox and a "read me" page that discusses fsync. I disabled as directed. So, I think I am good to go there.
I am gonna try removing and then reattaching to my google account.
What is the CCS store patch? Oh, and I do not believe I changed my DPI. I kinda did a very generic flash, nothing spectacular. I am careful not to "walk the rope without a net" when I play with this stuff, I know I can destroy something, so I keep it pretty simple.
OK, lemme try the removal of my google account and try from there first.
Thanks sir! I'll update pretty soon!
