When you said "Rooting my B&N Nook Color (1.2.0)", you actually have no choice but only one option, that is using ManuallyNook, with whatever version, sorry can't help since I didn't root my device.
Other options are installing and running CM7 or the a-like onto eMMC (aka internal memory) or from an external uSD card.

thank you for your reply and i did say thanks/rep
but i know there are things like.....
Froyo (Android 2.2), Honeycomb (Android 3.0 & 3.1), CM7 and ManualNooter 4.6.16 and i just have no idea what would work best for what i want
If you don't care about the stock OS cm7 is the best way to go.

Use the SD card method by verygreen. Get yourself a class 2. 8 gig sandisk and boot cm7. This way here if ( and I use if lightly) you want to revert back to stock just remove the card. Verygreens post can be found on the development page under size agnostic.

It looks the same as this one so take your pick:

1. Froyo, HC are OS
2. CM7 is Gingerbread-based OS, custom ROM.
3. ManualNooter is a tool to unlock the NC stock OS
So, if you want to keep and use the stock OS (in this case, Froyo) and want to utilize its full capability, you then "unlock" it using ManualNooter.
If you don't care about the stock OS, you then can install/running other custom ROM such CM7, HC, ...

Hello,
Could you please help me for a couple of questions?
- do i need an sd card to root my NC?
- is there a way to install .apk without rooting my NC?
- what is a basic and stable rom to start with? I am using CM7 on my Motorola Milestone

1. Yes, you need a 64gb card to root
2. yes, but you will need a 64gb card for this too.
3. At this time all roms have to be imaged to a 64gb card to run.
Sorry i was using my phone to post and i thought that i was in Q&A already... and beleive me i went through a lot of pages through Tapatalk but didn't find anything!

He's joking.
All you need is a 2gb micro sdcard or larger and you should be fine.

I have no idea what he's talking about. You can use any SD card 2gb or bigger. The ROMs currently available are CM7, honeycomb (based off the SDK), and stock 1.2 rooted. For honeycomb and CM7, you can install it on the eMMC or run it off the SD card.
Here are a few links:
1.2 rooted
SD Card installs (ROMs)
Dual Boot ROMs (eMMC)
NookDevs Wiki - Tutorials and other info.
Between those and this forum, you should be set. Extra bits are Netflix on the Nook, and running Tegra 2 Apps. I'd recommend overclocking if you do any of those though - once you overclock to 1.1ghz then everything is fast as can be.
Honestly guys sorry!
I used Tapatalk and wasnt able to understand where exactly i should have posted!
OK thanks i'll check it out. I was reading last week that you can have a ROM on th SD Card and just reboot through that, and if you dont want that, just take out the sd card and you have the stock ROM. Is that true, or not so much?
Because i live in Europe, i dont want to mess so much with NC, as if anything goes wrong i wont have a store near me to go and get some help!

The Nook will automatically boot from the SD card, so I would just pick up a spare sd card to try out one of the ROMs. If you like it, you could install it on the internal memory, eMMC, or dual boot.
The great thing with the Nook Color is it's almost impossible to brick, and everything I posted is completely reversible. Worst case is you take the SD card and run clockwork recovery to restore it.
Just to get the full experience, I would root stock 1.2 with Manual Nooter (look at the link I posted before), so you get the full Android experience with B&N's mods -- best for reading btw. Also, most of the apps on B&N are paid apps, but, on the market they're free. That's an incentive to root right there.
ok thanks for your time!
Great to be also in the Nook family of users now!
Will try it with my 2gb card first and then will buy a bigger one. Would the class of the card have any material differences on the Nook performance?

Check out this thread for the best cards to run from. tl;dr version: any SanDisk class 4, 8GB or 16GB seems to be the best bet.
I had my Original Nook Color Since the 1.0.1 days. I rooted it and had it running everything for over a year. I went through the early froyo days and PhireMod days ect.... Recently I been running CM7 via sdcard. Well I tried some stupid things with my boot loader and messed up both loaders on the uSD and emmmc. Anyways ... after reading close to 100 messages and following many many old broken links, I have finally (via adb) got my nook back to stock 1.0.1 and running.
I am tech savy and know a bit about linux. And a lot about how the nook works. But my mind is fried after all this. SO I am asking for some help. Like I said, I currently have a working nook running stock 1.0.1 (with old broken wifi even) So my router is wide open so I can have wifi that works on nook. Anyway Please advise me were to go from here.
I would like to get CM7 running again via my sd-card. I would also like to update to Stock Nook 1.4.1 (on emmc) (so I can use their new comic reader) but that is not my main focus. If I can do that and dual boot then fine. But my real goal is just to get back to CM7 nightlies.
Do I need to nooter again ? Can some kind sole please point me in the correct direction or just walk me through what I need to do... I am tech savy so you could spell it out quickly if needed. I do have adb working and I have 2 empty sdcards.
ANYTHING would help my brain from overloading LOL.
Thank you so much.
PS... I have helped many many many people over the last 2 years both here in the Nook world and in the ANdroid forums.
Peace

You have double posted and were answered on the other thread. You don't expect people to answer the same question twice do you? Or do you think they are different questions?
Eyeballer told you how to get to stock 1.2 in his guide. If you have wifi working, I would think it would update by itself from there.
The guide for making CM7 bootable SD is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12240928
And you don't have to root emmc to do it.

Regarding the thread "[ROMS]NEW! Dualboot Mirage CM7 / ICS CM9 Image for SDcard [3/26]" at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448186
The link to the downloads that the primary post refers to - http://techerrata.com/browse/nook/racks - hosts many files.
I am getting a new Nook Color and would like to know if http://techerrata.com/file/nook/racks/Mirage_CM7_ICS_CM9_DualbootSD.img.zip includes the latest updates; if not, which update files to download - and are they cumulative, or do I have to install each one in succession?
I searched for this info elsewhere and came up with nothing. Many thanks to anyone who would care to help.
Looks like .img is dated 3/04, so I'd do img and only add the latest CM7 and ICS, or Miui. The updates must be added to the "sdcard" partition of the sdhc card.
Smiley
Thanks - that does help. I'm still a little fuzzy, though, on whether I should download both OpenGL and non-OpenGL, both MIUI ICS and MIUI GB, and if I really do have to flash gapps after the rom.
Not sure about the others but the OpenGL and nonOpen Gl is an either or choice. The non seems to be the more stable.

Either MIUI replaces the Mirage 7.2 primary boot. The secondary boot can be either OpenGL or non-OpenGL. You have to reflash gapps everytime you update the ROMs.

Clarity is golden and scintillating. Thanks to you all. Now I've got to decide which ROMs are best for me. I see MIUI has a guest mode. Is something like that available in Mirage?
Read the OP in RACKS thread
The files to setup the CM7/CM9 SD card need to be modified so if you download eyeballer or samians updated you need to follow the directions here to have them work. I've had good luck with the non open GL builds the open GL builds would freeze up once or twice a day.

I've been using the openGL eyeballer builds since I got my NC about a month ago. Issues are no worse than any other custom ROM I've ever used. DL goomanager from the market and you can update to the nightlies every day (without any fuss). It's a bit slow, but considering that this thing was $90 (my cost) and 800mhz, I'm not complaining. I mostly just use it for books, email, chat, light games, and web browsing.
I am running the Dualboot Mirage CM7 / ICS CM9 Image. It was working well, but after the battery fell below operational threshold the nook will not charge or boot at all, it just displays the charge icon whenever I try to start it.
Right now I cannot use the nook at all.
Your call, you may not have any issues, but as awesome as the build is, if you have the same problem I do your nook will become useless.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

About a year ago, I successfully installed custom nookie froyo 2.2.1 on my nook internal sd following a youtube video (created a bootable micro sd, etc.) I actually surprised myself that it worked out since I’m no tech wizard!
Although everything is working fine, I now want to upgrade to CM 7 since I feel it’s now a bit laggy.
My question is:
Do I have to repeat the whole process (bootable SD, etc.) or is there a shortcut I can take ? If so, can you link me to a walkthrough? If not, can you also link me to a recent good walkthrough so I can repeat the process?
Thanks for the input!
Greetings from Vienna

I have an old Nook Color sitting on the shelf and decided it is time to do something with it. I want to know which ROM is the most stable with all hardware working (CM 10, 10.1, ASOP, other?). I plan to use it for games, web browsing, and maybe watching videos. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I do plan to run from an SD card if that makes a difference.

If you want stability the most, the MiRaGe CM7 is your best bet. If you need/want a more recent Android, pick the stable CM10 or mateorod's AOSP (which are quite responsive in the Nook even being Android 4.2 ).

I also recommend Mirage ROM. I'm running it and it's crazy fast, especially overclocked to 1.2GHz, animations disabled. I can watch HD YouTube videos with no lagg at all.
I am trying out Mirage CM7 off an SD card and it seems like it will be ideal.
Should I try to install it to internal memory or is there really no point? Are there up to date instructions for installing to internal memory?
If I do decide to just keeping running Mirage CM7 off the SD card, can I still use the internal memory to store/play movies while running Mirage CM7? It appears in estrongs, so I wouldn't see why that wouldn't work.
Is overclocking to 1.2 required to watch youtube in HD?

Yeah I'd say it's worth it to install to internal SD. Overclocking to 1.2GHz helps a lot with video playback. If you're at stock 800MHz, it lags occasionally. The TI OMAP 3621 has a rated frequency of 1GHz, so if you're worried, just put it to 1GHz clock speed max.
Which root method is the easiest? Thanks.

If you are using a non-stock rock (CM, PA, AOSP, etc), then you don't need to do anything — those come with root enabled by default, and Superuser preinstalled.

I found the instructions for internal install. Went perfectly. Seems like no reason not to do that. I guess if I have 8 failed boots in a row, my CM7 install will get wiped and stock will come back? I guess that's not too likely.
Mirage CM7 had an 1100MHz and 1200MHz choice in the settings, so I just set it at 1100MHz to be a little safe.
Seems to be working great.

You can get root in three different ways,
If you are using the stock ROM, and what you want to do is rooting it, you can follow the instructions from this page in CyanogenMod wiki
If you want to keep the stock ROM in the internal memory, but want to install another ROM (for example, CyanogenMod), you can follow the instructions in this thread. You won't have root when booting the stock ROM in the internal memory, but you will when booting CM from the SD card. (Of course you can also root the stock ROM using the instructions from the previous item, and both ROMs would be rooted.)
If you do not want to keep the stock ROM, you can install another ROM in the internal memory, for example following this guide for CM7/CM10. (There is also instructions for installing CM in the wiki page I linked above).
