I had a S2 and a S3 and now i was really thinking of buying the S4 (9500 or 9505, i didn't decide that too) but now i'm really worried about how many people are disapointed with the phone... and also with how it's weak and easily breakable the screen (glass and amoled) can be... some people are saying that it broke by itself while charging or on the front pocket...
so, my question to you guys is: would you buy it again? and why?
please, help the worried person here
Yes, despite Samsung's 'nonsense' (the crap with sources, recent f*****y with locking down bootloader) with firmware. As long as you run custom firmware, it's a great device. And if you're stupid enough to use a $800+ electronic device which has your entire life on it without a protective case, you probably deserve for it to break on you.
Does that answer your question ?
Well i think that just stock rom is enough and you have a great device in your hands. It is not weak and there is always some bad phones that comes out of the factory but i believe that samsung will fix those bad devices and i recommended I-9505 with snapdragon 600 or the new 800 snapdragon s4.

Reason why : it's have many Room Cook and good supports on this forum. You can try it and comments yourself.
Thanks

I will, as i did with all my phones, use a protective case, but as i said, there was cases where the AMOLED broke with it on the front pocket, without any kind of impact. I fount those cases here and some others foruns in Brazil...
I always carry my phone in the Front jeans pocket and nothing happened to mine. I guess if you have Bad luck there is a Chance of breaking the screen. Could happen with any other phone too.

I don't have a case and it's fine. Would get this device again. I leave my nexus 4, HTC one and the others at home lately. I just like this device, something about it just ticks all the boxes.
Every phone had a thread on screens cracking etc. The aluminum in the HTC scratched to bits on me and it looks horrible. The nexus back glass scratched .... My s4 is in mint condition.

So I just noticed a decent sized scratch on my fascinates screen.
It's in the middle of the screen, and I can feel it with a fingernail. The phone spends all day in my pocket, and I baby it, so I'm surprised. Never been dropped or anything.
Though I know it's morally ambigious, I was thinking about returning it to verizon under the guise of faulty GPS/not getting a lock so I could get a new one with a clean screen.
Anyone know of any reason this wouldn't work?
If I do this or not though, will def be getting a screen protector.
reasons it wouldn't work would be if the rep there knows the gps problem affects all fascinate units so they may only offer swapping to a different model. Also, the devilish giggling sounds you make as you try to scam them might give you away.
good luck!
Worth a shot. I'll have to return to stock and see. Nothing really to lose beyond having to re root if they say no.

On a related subject, whats the best screen protector? I would like one that covers the entire front. Also, I thought these screens were hard to scratch except with sand? I have no scratches yet.
I find this hard to believe....these phones have gorilla glass....same as iphone.....go google it and watch some youtube videos of people stabbing their phones. I will never use crappy screen protector again.....i swear they are a scam. Just my two cents.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
umm teeharding... gorilla glass isn't indestructable :/ I'd like to see a youtube video of someone rubbing sand paper on a display and then we'll talk.
how are screen protectors a scam when they tend to the need for which you bought them? sure we can say they are costly, but thats just one of those inequalities in life we should learn to deal with in a capitalistic society. :/
I can assure you that it is possible to scratch Gorilla Glass, as I did it.
What exactly did it? Couldn't tell you, but I was careless and overconfident in the GG, and had it in my pocket with keys and my headphones, and it was scratched up in a few weeks, though only one scratch was deep enough to feel with a fingernail.
Since I've gotten the new phone I decided to order the realook screen protector from amazon, and it has its own pocket, free of anything else. besides my wallet (leather, no metal or edges).
Trust me, I don't need to google the greatness of GG, I've had my own real life test done, and it failed. Phone was never dropped or handled roughly.
Yikes. Glad I got an Invisible Shield installed. So how is the new GPS? I'm considering returning mine as I also have GPS issues. It scared me when I read that it may be a hardware issue on these forums today.

If its a known issue with the unit it specifically means they will NOT exchange the device. And def not for another one, given its the 1st one.
You will be told to wait for them to release an update that "fixes" the issue, and at which point, it doesn't, THEN the device is swapped out, for another identical model.
You can try returning the phone at that point, and depending who you get or what not, they may waive the restock fee, especially if you point out that you're returning a phone for an issue thats CLEARLY not your problem, and mention that the rep who sold you the phone didn't point it out.
@ [OP] How did the realooks do for you?

Hey yall nothing special but I reancently drop my phone 1 too many time and crack the screen. Does anyone happen to know what phone I get as a replacement from assurion. I've heard people geting the EVO 3d. I have the white version of the EVO now and seems so slipery when I pull it out of my pocket. Also anything special I should do I had it, but i already flash it back to stock non rooted.

You may get an Evo as a replacement; the 3D if they're out of stock.
Evo4g is what you get

If it's slippery, get a case.
I would suggest buying an otterbox for your new phone either way. It might be expensive but ive had my evo since release and my brother (ever since I got the case) thought it would be funny to show everyone who saw it and says "look! its indestructable" :\ Ass! You might also find that you can actually salvage it by buying a new lcd screen and digitizer glass for under 70.00 on ebay! just tell your carrier you lost it! you pay the same premium regaurdless if you have insurance! then you can turn it around and sell it as refurbished! Keep in mind some skill and technical knowlege of the EVO might be required along with tools if it is not included!
What's crazy is, my wife's Evo has had two cracked screens and every time we took them to the Sprint stores, they only charged us 25 dollars for a replacement Evo (Just the body, no battery/case/sd card/accessories). Are they not doing this anymore?
I've head my screen replaced countless times by sprint (with root) for free.
Edit: not to mention speakers replaced, bezel, camera lenses. All free. Never unrooted my phone, ever. Same root from day after launch.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
How many *is* countless?
I'm not trying to be flip, I think it's an important point (only semi-related to the OP, but definitely something that occurred to me lately) : if you're having to replace that many things on your phone, that doesn't reflect well on the build quality of the phone.
My observation, from this and other remarks on XDA, as well as my own experience (below) is that Evo's tend to break a lot. Probably less than other brands, and possibly less than other HTC phones, but probably more than certain other phones also (dare I mention the iPhone or is that just going to get me banned on XDA?)
On my original Evo, which I had less than a year, I had to replace the camera lens cover, the internal ear piece speaker (not the speakerphone speaker) and the digitizer. The last one I took to a Sprint store - 35 bucks was pretty reasonable, but they don't just replace a digitizer, they also swap out a whole assembly from some other returned phone including someone else's glass, LCD, and bezel. The other two jobs I did myself using parts I got on Ebay. I thought I did a good job too until, a few months after I did the speaker, the screen started acting funny and I realized I had screwed it together oh-so-slightly wrong and torqued the motherboard just a little. The problem got progressively worse and I finally had to buy a replacement Evo on Ebay. So much for saving a buck going the DIY route.
And those are just the problems I was able to solve. I also had to live with the famous crack in the bezel near the volume button, various dings in the relatively soft plastic of the bezel, and a down-volume button that just stopped working (too much use in recovery sessions I guess? )
Evo's *feel* pretty solid, and they're definitely not cheap plastic toys, but I don't remember having these problems with the fruit flavored phone I used to have.

Well, yes, it is a calculated risk. The old rule applies : don't gamble if you can't afford to lose.
To me, it's just a phone, so I gambled (and lost). I survived just fine, but I agree that not everyone would/should make the same choice.

OK. So it wasn't countless.
But
3 screen (2 my fault and 1 the tech installed wrong - about to go for a 4th screen cuz I recently dropped and cracked it again, but this time it's not shattered)
2 or 3 external speakers
2 cam lens covers
And 1 badly dinged bezel (that I didn't even ask for, they did it while replacing the screen)
Never had to pay a dime.
I think the build quality is great. Maybe they could use a better speaker, but I think I was using a kernel with audio gains when it blew (i.e. my fault).
Busted screens were obviously my fault.
And HTC has GOT to find a way to protect camera lenses better. I had camera scratches on my HTC diamond, too, but all the Evo and newer HTCs have an even less protected lens.
I never unrooted. I usually try to make it look sorta stock, though. But the last time I brought it in with ICS, and even had ROM toolbox right on my homescreen lol

GUYS,
PLEASE BEWARE, the Galaxy S3 is no where as sturdy as the S1 which i previously owned or a S2.
Today it just fell off from my pocket and see what happened to the screen :-(
I had dropped my previous S1 a million times in the period of 2 years and not a single scratch
I am going to give it in on warranty, pathetic stuff from samsung
please everyone take care and use a casing.
Yikes
That's annoying. Hope you get it fixed mate.
I wonder if Samsung does that dirty trick of logging out the G sensor to detect whether it's been dropped or not and not accept warranty repairs based on it.
It was all fine after the drop. I used it for about 30 min. Then when i woke up in the morning, the screen was like this
it was a very subtle drop, this is pathetic quality and should be covered under manufacturer defect
Warranty don't cover clumsiness
G-sensor isn't a dirty trick to see if phone is dropped its proof
Sending back for warranty repairs saying you didn't drop it is a dirty trick
If you drop your phone a million times I strongly suggest phone insurance and a otter box case

To be fair, its pretty reasonable to expect that someone would at some point in a two year period drop a device that they will likely be carrying about with them ALL the time and removing it from and replacing it in their pocket frequently.
Just yesterday my s3, having only got it on monday, slid off the arm of my sofa because every surface of it is glassy smooth and bounced off the edge of a wooden table. Luckily it was unscathed but it is not unreasonable to expect a device of this nature to be able to withstand such an accident.
There is a certain amount of luck involved here though because obvioisly even the lightest tap at the right angle and position could shatter a screen.

With today's technology and what it costs is the minimum that can withstand drops of at least 50 cm like my RAZR .........
If im not mistaken it seems as if all the white ones are the ones with the faulty issues... the cracked screens, the exploding phone, dead screen... dont you think that might be the reason they're releasing the white at a later time? to perfect it a lil more...i read something where that they had to redo the pebble blue because of some issues and maybe they're redo'ing the white version...hmmm makes sense....:good:
Unlucky mate, hope it gets fixed. I am fairly certain that my phone is going to get dropped sooner or later, simply because it's so big (even more so in a case) that I can't hold it securely in one hand and operate it properly at the same time.
Tbh I'm going to keep hold of it until the rumoured multiple Nexuses come out later in the year and then maybe sell it on to get something slightly smaller.

no. I think since the pebble blue was delayed due to Samsung's color issue, the bulk of what was immediately available were the white phones. Then when a few units had problems, they happened to be white.
My white one fell out of my hoody jacket as I was running for the bus, I was lucky that it landed on the cement, not the grass or I wouldn't have noticed it. Three corners have massive damage and there paint scraped off, it really did hit the ground hard. But the screen is perfect

I agree that if you drop your phone you only have yourself to blame if it breaks but having said that i also believe a device like this should be able to withstand some drops, they managed it with the S1 & the S2.
My advice would be to get it insured and get a case of any description, something is better than nothing, even if it's only a pouch!

I don't care what anyone says. The nexus 4 is a really cheaply made device. But what can you expect from a device with good specs at that pricepoint? Answer: a lot more than what I got, that's for sure. Anyways I have a huge list of defects on mine, so I hope I can cover all of them here
Screen banding: greys look quite poor and inconsistent, almost like the ribbon cable is damaged. Similar to this issue is that after turning the device off for a few minutes then turning it back on the sides of the screen, especially the right side, look way brighter than they should. Almost like backlight bleed, which I have as well
creaking: An issue mostly for the nexus 7 that somehow arrived on my nexus 4 as well. My nexus 4 for the longest time creaked like you wouldn't believe. You know when you pick up an old SNES controller and twist it a bit and it creaks? Yeah, like that, except it was every time I touched near the power button. I tried to fix it, but I only caused 2 other areas to creak and only partially fixed the first one
multi touch issues: Another issue thought to be exclusive to the nexus 7 but was transferred over to my 4. I first noticed it when I was fooling around with an ocarina app on my phone and I couldn't cover all the holes, so I downloaded a multitouch app and noticed a problem. When I have 4 fingers touching the screen, one of a few things happens. It either only registers 2 or 3 touches, or if I move my finger it will move the finger that I have parallel to it the opposite direction that I moved my finger. And if I have them all in a line it just goes f*cking nuts, sometimes having one finger, sometimes having 4 but not in a straight line, sometimes 2, etc. It was even worse than my nexus 7.
I could go on and on about how there's a dead pixel somewhere on the screen, or how there's sometimes a green spot in the middle of my camera, but let's stop there. You may be wondering why I haven't returned it yet. Well that's because the glass on the back completely shattered, like spiderwebs everywhere. But I didn't drop it, nor did I put the hot phone on a cold table, in fact, I just squeezed the side a bit. I took off the cover to fix the creaking issue, since I figured out how to fix it, and I wasn't pushing that hard, I've put far more stress on it just from taking it off, and I hear a loud "pop" and my hand is covered in glass, and there's really bad crackage on the back. I also put a tiny crack in it earlier from letting it slide off of my pants TWO INCHES OFF THE GROUND. *heavy breathing* I've never had such poor experiences with devices in my entire life. It's even worse than my experience with my nexus 7, which had similar issues, like the creaking, and the backlight bleeding, and the multitouch issues, and my nexus 7 had at least 40 stuck pixels on it that weren't fixed when I got a new screen. I don't think I'm ever going to buy a Nexus product ever again. I don't care if it's stock android, or if the performance is good, or if it's easy to root, or whatever. What's the most important part of a device? Being able to f*cking use it. And I can't use any of the devices I've owned because they've all been defective! My galaxy nexus had HUGE scratches on it just from it being in my bag, and stopped charging even after replacing the USB port, my first nexus 7's battery didn't work, my second nexus 7's screen had at least 40 stuck pixels, the oleophobic layer started to come off and it creaked a bit, and after getting it RMA'ed most of the pixels were still there and it creaked like a SOAB, and my nexus 4, I've already explained in depth. So now whenever I hear "oh, the nexus 4's build quality is comparable to the iPhone 5" or "the nexus 7 is soo much better built than samsung tablets" I just chuckle and say "yeah, I believe you"
What do you expect it sells for 299$only

I took superb care of it, the vast majority of issues I have with it were there when I got it, and sorry put it in the wrong thread.
My phone is in really good condition. I bought it on launch date and I have not had a replacement get. I really don't know what you are talking about.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Well that was a poorly-formatted paragraph, and after sifting through it for your complaints, I can tell you that half of those issues can be "fixed" with kernel adjustments. I put 'fixed' in quotation marks because they aren't really fixes, more like tweaks.
As for the rest of your complaints, it seems like you don't take very good care of your phone. My Nexus 4 is in mint condition and I don't use a case or screen protector. If it's not in my hand, it's in my pocket. I don't set it on tables or anywhere, really. Treat that phone like the high-end piece of electronics that it is instead of the way you treat your car keys.
Also: prepare for this thread to be closed.
Idk man it sounds a lot like ur just complaining .. I've had a lot of devices so little stuff doesn't get me anymore but you could've gotten unlucky too but honestly I've had my phone since November and I just haven't tried to hear it creak . .I'm sure it does but I could care less you might have OCD though if ur noticing all that small stuff you might wanna get that checked out.
And the other stuff sounds like u did it ur self cause that first crack is always the hardest after that ur screens pretty much shattered honestly

Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
You're judging the build quality of a device sold globally based solely on one defective unit that you happened to receive? That's simply not logical. I for one have a device with no issues and I consistently throw my phone onto my bed (easy 2-3 feet down) and absolutely nothing has happened to it. I can get a creak but only if I press the back of the phone with amounts of force that would never come up in a normal usage scenario. You're hugely exaggerating here, and while I understand your frustration there's really no point complaining about bad luck.
You don't care what anyone says and nobody cares what you say. Let's call it even and move on.

Yeah I apologize this thread really shouldn't exist. I just got a bit angry and didn't know where else to put my anger into. The nexus 4 is really a fantastic device, just not MY nexus 4. Besides I'm getting a new back which will fix the creaking issue and cracked back issue which are the two issues that bother me the most. The rest of the issues are fairly minor (except maybe multi touch, but who knows, that could be the back as well, maybe it's a software bug) and I can live with them. I've already calibrated the display so the banding and bleeding issues are a bit less pronounced.
I tested this multitouch thing:
I can place all my 10 fingers on the screen and it will recognize them. But put 4 on it and place them in a line: every "touch" will be gone ..now move one finger (while 4 are on the screen): 1 finger is recognized.
Yes, very strange.
I too have slight creaks on the screws and a bit on the power button. And a lot of small scratches on the back since it just lays on the glass :/
How often does someone need to use their screen like a retard unless u have no fingers
I really shouldn't be complaining too much because it could be much worse. And it only cost 350 dollars.
I don't care what op says. My n4 is the best phone I ever had. And mine build quality is iphone like. I had to rma my first one due to some problem. But rma process is too easy smooth and fast not like iphone.

That said, how hard is it to cause internal damage from dropping a S4 with a light case on it? How would you know besides obvious things like a screen or vibration not working?
Thanks in advance! Hopefully your responses will calm my worry's about this. Also is there manufacturer protection on phones that you bought 2nd hand (I bought mine on Swappa).

Thanks in advance! Hopefully your responses will calm my worry's about this. Also is there manufacturer protection on phones that you bought 2nd hand (I bought mine on Swappa).
