Need phone buying advice - Hardware Hacking General

Guys, I need some phone buying advice.
I don't use it much so I don't need all the latest things but I do have a few requirements.
The last one I bought and the one I have now is the Nexus One. I got it when it first came out
I like it but the touch sensitivity is crap and I'm tired of having to click 5-10 times sometimes.
Also, speaker volume is not enough and the speaker quality is so, so.
Camera quality is $HIT!
Here is what I need. Note, I DO NOT want an iPhone in case someone was going to recommend me one.
Size about the same as the Nexus one. I need a decent size screen as my eyes are bad. I do NOT need a bigger phone.
Android so that I can pimp it with an app that will let me make ALL the fonts bigger.
Crisp and bright screen.
Good touch sensitivity.
LOUD speaker and good quality. For voice only, not much need for music.
I would like to be able to use this with voice dial for future use with headset and hands free in my truck.
Something cheap that I can buy right now and I would consider used or even something directly from one of the chinese
sites, as long as it does what I want.
UNLOCKED for use with my own sim card. I DO NOT do contracts.
Good quality camera.
I'm not sure how a dual sim card phone works but IF it's possible to have one phone that I can have two numbers on and be able to answer any of those numbers, WITHOUT having to power down and changing to a different number, then I would really like that.
Also, I have another question. I have two google voice numbers but they will only let me forward calls to ONE cellphone number. Ie, I have a google number ending with 1111 and I can forward it to my cell but I cannot forward the calls from google number 2222 to my cell.
They will however allow me to forward calls from both google numbers to my home number...?
Is there a way around that so that I can answer calls from BOTH google numbers on my phone?
I don't do facebook or twitter or stuff like that and I only do a few minutes a month on my phone. ALL I do is make calls
and the occasional browsing and checking out youtube videos.
Thanks
George

Buying Jasjar. Users pl help with a few questions

I have a Nokia 9500. My pda use is 50% and phone 50%. I wish to buy JASJAR. Please help me with a few questions:
1. How is the voice quality and volume on external/ phone side of the phone? Pl compare with 9500 as a benchmark. Is it louder? I work in a noisy environment.
2. I am told phone wakes after 3 rings if in powersave mode. Is it true? Can I disable powersave?
3. Can I pick an incoming call without opening the cover if I do not wish to see caller id?
4. How is the speed compared to 9500? I have 3000 Contacts and 500 calendar entries. It takes a long time to search on 9500. 5-20 seconds
5. How is the phone signal reception. Compare with 9500.
6. Can you send fax from JJ? I do it regularly from 9500.
7. How is messaging?
8. Build quality, especially hinge? One has to open and rotate frequently, because no external phone keypad.
9. Did anybody try bluetooth headset Sony HBH-300?
10. There is no escape key. if I make a type mistake while editing can I come out without saving?
11. Handsfree speaker sound quality?
12. when phone rings there is no light on receive button. Does it really hamper receiving in dark? Of course one can open the screen!
13. Battery? How long does the charge last?
14. When U close cover blue tooth shuts but LED says it is on. Is it true? Is it a nuisance?
I to have been searching for suffice information, for i will be wanting to purchase the JJ within the next week. What are the downsides to the phone? And i was reading somewhere that a headset(wireless)comes with the phone?
If not-which is the best bt-headset for this phone?I have heard the bt-800 from jabra.
Regards
Keyboard quality of JaSJAR
And, how is the keyboard? tactile feedback? ruggedness and long lasting?
i have the jj & using it for 6 months now, i will answer the Qs that i can, the ones i don't have the answer i'll leave blank.
hope this would help.
1. How is the voice quality and volume on external/ phone side of the phone? Pl compare with 9500 as a benchmark. Is it louder? I work in a noisy environment.
i cannot compare it to the 9500 since i never owned one, but i can say the sound quality is pretty good since i'm using it for a while now.
2. I am told phone wakes after 3 rings if in powersave mode. Is it true? Can I disable powersave?
you can do that through a third party software, tweaks 2k2 is a very usefull.
3. Can I pick an incoming call without opening the cover if I do not wish to see caller id?
yes you can, just press the answer button on the side.
4. How is the speed compared to 9500? I have 3000 Contacts and 500 calendar entries. It takes a long time to search on 9500. 5-20 seconds
i heard some 9500 - 9300 users say that the jj is better in search feature, but i cannot confirm for that amount of contacts (i don't know anyone that has that much)
5. How is the phone signal reception. Compare with 9500.
6. Can you send fax from JJ? I do it regularly from 9500.
yes you can through a third party app, but i can say this: the 9500 has the best fax service i've ever seen or heard about.
7. How is messaging?
you can handle it professionally which i can say from others experiences is better than the 9500.
8. Build quality, especially hinge? One has to open and rotate frequently, because no external phone keypad.
after using it since early october, the rotation is still the same with no loose, and i use it daily.
9. Did anybody try bluetooth headset Sony HBH-300?
i tried most of the brands available in the market, the two best headsets i found are the jabra and the SE, in terms of quality. i didn't try the hbh-300 though, i tried the hbh-608.
10. There is no escape key. if I make a type mistake while editing can I come out without saving?
11. Handsfree speaker sound quality?
also i found this a very good quality since it has sterio sound system, with two speakers. though, i ran into some unsatisfied users from time to time.
12. when phone rings there is no light on receive button. Does it really hamper receiving in dark? Of course one can open the screen!
you can put it on vibration
13. Battery? How long does the charge last?
i charge it normally every 3 days of usage (at least) sometimes longer, but eventually it depends on your usage.
14. When U close cover blue tooth shuts but LED says it is on. Is it true? Is it a nuisance?
i hope this can help.
at the end you have to test it for your self to see whats best for you.
cheers.

Well is there a test number on this site to connect to someone to make sure the video cam works?

Well i just got my i-mate JASJAR(BRAND NEW AND UNLOCKED!!!) and i am well beyond pleased!size is alright ,but hey!this is like the prototype of whats to come within the next couple of years! Its like when the first handheld Cellphone came out!Big as PHUCK!but then reduced its size over the years,Same thing with the pocketpc, starting big and will eventually reduce in size...im lucky because i did not get all of the skype,anti-virus extras-just the basics (meaning everything but the junk!)and all of the hardware(meaning chargers etc.)
The person i bought mine from is David of Mad Monkey Boy Gadgets. He put up with over 25 hours of telephone conversation and over 65 emails within a 2 week time span from me!and never once did he get angry or anything of the nature!
Here is the link if you would like to check out his site:

Any chance of making athena usable as a handset?

I have no idea if this is possible, but I'd love to be able to use my athena as a handset, not just a speakerphone. I know it's huge, but I've had my device for three months and am still not happy with the headset solution. I've tried the popular jabra, jawbone, and lg style-I options, but don't like having to carry and charge another device, or wearing a headset (even just for calls), and although it's not awful, the sound quality (especially outgoing) often just isn't good enough for business calls.
What I'd like to do, if it could be done, is come up with a makeshift handset mode where the left speaker is turned off and the lowest setting for the phone volume could be much softer (so that the whole room doesn't have to hear the incoming sound). I don't know if it would be necessary to adjust the mic gain down any, but I don't think so.
The ideal solution would have something akin to a phone profile setting that would allow me to toggle between the default speakerphone setting and the new handset settings. But, it would be acceptable even if I had to just stay in handset mode (maybe with the ability to just turn up the call volume to have a mono speakerphone).
I am a total novice here, but is there a way to hack the registry (or better yet, some audio manager app) to change the balance settings on the speakers and to decrease the lowest possible volume settings for the phone?
Of course, I'd probably carry the device without the keyboard so that I didn't have to take it off and put it somehwere every time a call came in.
Is anyone else wanting something like this? Can anyone help? If I'm just nuts, please be kind in saying so
Thanks.
It sounds like for what you desire, someone would have to write a program to do that. If there was a program that did that, I would be interested in trying it out.
basically you have to accept the fact that its JUST TOO BIG
to ever be used as a conventional phone.
After I took ONE call on mine , i went straight out and bought a headset and its much better than using any phone which i loathe to do anyway.
I dont think of my athena as a phone , its a mini laptop that can make phone calls, you have to accept that or get another phone
erm... it could possibly be done.
However: the speaker(s) on it are clearly not usable as the kind that would permit you to humiliate yourself by having it to your ear; they're too loud for that and in the wrong place.
However, it should be possible to make some sort of speakerphone mode (like with video calling) that you can just talk into the mic with.
the question is, do you *really* want to make yourself look like that big a bellend in public?
i understand your dilemma but the only other real solution i can think of is to use a wired headset, it has better outgoing sound quality and you don't need to charge it.
Thanks to all for the quick replies.
Irus, I tried the wired headset for a while, but always had trouble with trying to both check to see who was calling and get the headset untangled and in my ear before the call went to voicemail. Tried a couple of the retractable headsets, but they broke pretty quickly.
Olipro, um never heard the term "bellend" before, but I think I have a pretty good idea what it means And, well, I guess the answer is, "Yes, I *really* do." I know it will look strange, but I personally am even less fond of the bluetooth headset look (I know most here will TOTALLY disagree with that, just my opinion).
Anyway, I realize that the hardware is far from ideal for this, but I think the right side speaker (though pointed in the wrong direction) would be right at my ear if I were speaking into the mic. Olipro, you say the speakers are way too loud. Are you saying that they aren't capable of producing softer sound? I just assumed that they could be set to a lower volume. Is it actually a qualitatively different type of speaker and sound? (I'm honestly asking.)
Can a program be written to mute the left speaker and drastically reduce the volume of the right speaker on calls when in "handset" mode?
What do you say, Olipro? If it wouldn't take too much time away from your much anticipated rom cooking, would you consider working some of your magic to help me "humiliate" myself "in public" I'd even gladly send you pics of myself in the act of "bellendizing" myself afterwards.

If you are so desprate to use the athena this way, I think the safest and easiest way is to put adhesive tape over the speaker holes to muffle the sound, and then punch a few holes in one to your liking
You could Just superglue it to the side of your face
you really will have to face the fact that you may have to develop this programme yourself if you wish to use the ameo as a normal handset - i use the term loosely - the problem with it is that whilst the ameo is the coolest gadget going as a mini pc, it is the most embarrassing thing in the world to press against your face, and also leaves you open to a VERY easy snatch if you get it out in public. And yes people who look like bellends are more susceptible to street crime. That's a fact, i'm sure of it. I chose my ameo knowing of its failings and devised my own solution of using it for data purposes only with wifi or a bluetooth dialup connection to my phone, which in turn i use for making calls and texting. Other people use bluetooth headsets and seem to get along with them fine. Until a kaiser quality device with a vga screen comes out i am happy to accept the ameos inconveniences and love it for what it is.

You might want to try PocketZenPhone, a software that does profiles for the phone. It is an on-going project and the developper handles requests which he incorporates into the soft. It might just be a case of developing another profile for you called "semi-mute" or something .
Or just stick with a BT headset, like the rest of us.
Thanks very much, Abram. Will check that out.
Guys,
I have been using Athena as a normal phone.Reduce the in call volume to zero and yes u can talk like a normal phone. If u are in very quiet environment, then fellows might listen what u r talking, but in any normal circumstances no one can hear what u are talking and eventhough the incall volume is zero, orther person can hear.Looks like HTC made an alternative arrangement, but any way it works fabulously
hdubli,
what do you mean when you say "reduce the in call volume to zero"? Do you just mean moving the slider all the way to the bottom? For me, that's still pretty loud. I can hear it easily well away from my ear. Or, do you mean something else? Thanks.

well I think evermore had a very good and valid question to ask,I too have just bought the same phone and I too am faced with exactly the same problem. I don't mind walking around with this phone in my hands holding it to my ear,if anyone wants to try and grab it,good luck to them,I would trash it first and them second. But what really P****D me off with the replies to this posting was the number of muppets who couldn't come up with a constructive and helpful answer to this problem. OBVIOUSLY they are used to little girlie phones and don't remember the old days of BIG phones or their limited intelligence doesn't allow them to post a constructive reply, and as for the comment of "bellend" well I am surprised the originator managed to find the internet, let alone use a mobile phone!!
So if there is some intelligence out there for us novices, please lets read it,otherwise use the superglue to permanently glue your laptop shut

The originator of the 'bellend' jibe just happens to be the man who devised a working CID and SIM unlock solution for this device: he would have been somewhat ancapacitated if his laptop had been glued shut.
I think that the use of such informal and slightly crude words as "bellend" is acceptable given the incorrigable nature of the problem: the idea of pressing a mini pc up against your face is crude in itself.
Given that I used to believe I could make a flying machine out of a monopoly board, a leather jacket and a tricycle, perhaps the same naive 4 year old might have thought it possible to turn a handset large enough to eat a ploughman's lunch off into a pocketable handset. I've grown up a little since then, and I use the Ameo for what it does best, rather than trying to make it into something it isn't.
YES I remember BIG phones. I also remember BBC Microcomputers, Shellsuits and televisions with teak surrounds but fortunately I've seen fit to move on since then, and find them a little embarrassing now.
If members wish to inform other members of the fruitlessness of their ideas then I don't think this is a problem (particularly if these members [Olipro] have a track record and know EXACTLY what they are talking about): the solutions of course are obvious and oft-discussed: bluetooth headset; turn volume down and press against ear; or don't use it as a phone at all.
Maybe you can't have your cake AND eat it.

Yes, I would like to request a hack for the phone so I can make myself look foolish and like a big bellend (whatever that means) in public.
I don't think I can look either foolish or like a bellend...no matter what I do. I just got it like that. LOL ;-p
I may even start a new trend. he he he

Quite frankly, this works with me, if I feel like holding the x7500 to my head. Of course, the call volume you hear depends on how good your hearing is, so YMMV. I find myself using a BT when I'm around others, either the LG Style-I or the Jawbone. (I'm eyeing the Jabra BT 8010 also). But the bottom line is you can use the x7500 as a handset this way if that's your preference.
Perfect solution!!!
Okay, get ready for this guys!
I found a perfect solution for everyone wanting to use the Athena like a regular phone. It'll take a little bit of work but it seems to be worth it. Check out the project site I found. It enables you to make the Athena or ANY other cell phone work like a regular phone. Just need to adjust the instructions for the Athena and it looks like we have ourselves a real solution.
Hope this helps someone ;-)

Ok, ok...all kidding aside, one of the coders may want to write something to make this possible. I would use it. I've been caught without my headset before and didn't want to answer the phone because there were people around me. This is a good backup solution and I would use it as that...a backup i ncase my headset battery went out (even though I have a spare headset) and in case I forgot my headset at home....GOD forbid!

I love it! My only suggstion is the guy in the picture needs to ditch his hat in favor of the tin foil model with the built-in antenna.

HD2 = Worst phone I've ever had

Sure it has a lovely screen.
Sure the build quality is nice.
Sure the internet browsing is fantastic.
Now the basic functions of the phone:
Texts are delayed and, I kid you not, often go to a different person in your contacts list!!!
Phonecalls are terrible. The earpiece volume is SO loud it is deafening, you need to raise the volume and then lower it on every single call in order to get a low volume. This is an extremely tedious process.
Speakerphone is unusable in anything but a noisy environment. It is WAY too loud, even on the lowest setting. It also distorts like crazy.
Hard keys on bottom only light up *after* you have pressed them.
CoPilot Live is rubbish!!! Unusable. Takes you the wrong route time and time again.
Calendar snooze time is set at 5 mins and impossible to edit for longer.
The camera is actually very good, despite all this talk of it being poor and the pink colour in the centre. It's all the *basic* phone problems which make this the worst mobile phone I have ever used.
Is this just my handset? Have I got a faulty one????
Unfortunately you are right, I am having the same issue. I don't care about the Camera.. I just need to perfrom the basic phone features.
Hopefully HTC is reading us.
We are still using the first Stock ROM which is obviously buggy and it is expected.
However, HTC should hurry up and come up with a new upgrade and Hotfix patches, else, I will seriously consider selling the device. I can't wait more than two other weeks.
only problem with mine is the camera...none of the other issues you say you have...
to bad
People said the same things with the blackstone and diamond, magic, atom, kaiser etc etc etc. Is this your first HTC? last phone a nokia? For every problem you stated there's a solution, reg tweaks, programs what ever. This is my 5th htc device, they all start out like crap but once their tweakt they are superior to any other phone. But once again out of the box it's no nokia.
Good luck and good hunting (for the tweaks)
Um... slight exageration... there a couple niggles so its the worst phone ever? I think its the best phone ever, with a few niggles.
I dont have a problem with my texts being delayed. It lags a little bit when there are loads of texts, but I just clear them out. (one niggle I would like fixing though)
The speaker volume for me is perfect, yes it is loud, but I just keep it turned down and its fine, but it also means if I need to I can turn it up! which is a much better than not being able to have it loud enough. (Fine the way it is)
Speakerphone is supposed to be loud?! again, set it to a low volume and its fine, and if you need it to be louder then you can turn it up. (Fine the way it is)
Dont care about the hard keys lighting up, took me maybe a day, if that to get used to where the buttons are, dont need them to light up (Fine the way it is)
CoPilot is rubbish, but thats nothing to do with the phone, use iGO its miles better.
Calender snooze option, I hadnt noticed, will have a look...
As to if you phone is faulty, I would say operator error

Speakerphone... see volume comment above
I don't use copilot, i use tomtom, so no problem here. When i tried it out, it s worked perfectly for my route
Never tried the calendar snooze, but that isn't enough for me to agree with you.
SO i have to completely dsagree, best device ive owned by FAAAAR

Put it down on the table and walk away, it's just a phone not a crisis point in your life.

Hd2 = best phone / pda ever made
I am a heavy phone / PDA user ( around 7000 min per mounth phone and i have un unlimited data contract). My only problem is that HD2 was not here 10 years ago .
Sure is not perfect and bugs are there too but if u want a bug free phone buy a classic phone not a small computer. The OS and the HTC senses are very complex programs and there is no way hell to be ever bug free.
So all HTC phones are rubbish out of the box, I need to 'tweak' them in order to get them to work? I don't mind tweaking things but basic phone functions such as speakerphone, call volume and texting *should* work out of the box. All of you who claim your phone volume is fine must be deaf! There are several guys on this forum who complain about the in-call volume, speakerphone volume and distortion coming through the speakers....so this isn't a one-off faulty handset that I own.
Take the hands off that phone and walk away. It's better for both sides.
Disappointed people, sell the God damn thing
Sell it to me cheap then! I'll be happy to pass it on to someone who appreciates it more (and has more patience)
Ah ah ah ah
Why were you so hurry to buy such expensive phone ???
Weren't you able to wait some times to see if some issues raised
Your post is ... what´s the word you like to use ... ah yes ! your post is rubbish.
Sell you phone, you are not the kind of youngster that needs such a phone
Last week I sold my iPhone 3G 16Gb and two days ago I bought my first HTC device - the HD2. Yes, it has some bugs, yes, I reseted it several times, but overall the experience is great. From the problems, mentioned in the first post, I have only the last one, but the camera in my iPhone was nowhere near the HD2 one. So, I am very happy, it is a great phone with a great community. Someone complaint that you need to tweak the device before use it, but that is a positive thing, take the iPhone, which in most cases lacks the ability for customizations. I am really glad that I changed my device and I hope, we'll see some great ROMS, games and apps for the HD2.
I arrived on the Pocket PC scene with thge Xperia X1, I would say that this was my worst phone out of the 3 I've owned.
My second was the near perfect Touch Diamond 2, great.
My present one is the HD2, which despite the issues, I would not regret buying it as I believe and hope the issues will get addressed and sorted. Yep, the best phone I've ever had.

My HD2 Doesn't have any of your problems, including the pinkish color in the center.
You can try Garmin XT instead of Copilot. Other then that, i think most of the problems can be fixed software wise, we just gotta wait for new roms to come out .

Hahaha, that's the proper comment for this thread.

bad audio quality /flakey email - anyone else got this

Hi all,
love the HD2 got 2 mail problems with it,
1) email is not reliable on pop 3, have to do soft resets to get it working again,
2) audio is crackly on the device and on some calls it sounds like there is distortion. audio is the same on headset , but clear as bell on music or vids.
Any comments will be appreciated. I am coming up to my 7 days caecal time limit and deciding what to do,
MB
1) I don't use POP3 but PUSH mail so can't help you about it.
2) Audio is not crackly on mine, the speaker is not like a hi-fi speaker but the sound is not too bad. With headset, the sound is perfect. if you want to configure it, you can use the Audio-Amplifier ; or SRS WOW (Leo's Themes & Apps section).
HTC's WinMo phones aren't phones like others. If you don't like to configure, set, and work to make your device better ; if you don't like to flash your phone every week D), don't buy an HD2. But if you like it, and if you like to allways be up-to-date of every patch, apps, tweak for your Leo, then buy one, and you'll have the better phone in the world
if you just want a phone to take call, send sms and receive email, you can buy an other phone, more easy to use, and which need less configuration and tweaks. Less power, but easier.

The usefulness of your email is well hidden, young padewan.
More seriously though....I've not noticed any crackly audio on mine so maybe it's your particular unit. Also POP3 mail has been working fine on mine, no problems with Yahoo mail. Perhaps your email provider might be at fault there.

So its not just my ears lol! two units in a row I have had do this. And cant try the latest firmware as Vodafone uk have not released it (they take for ever in this regard).

bump.........
Same problem on my HTC HD2. The audio quality is really bad. Unfortunately even after the latest firmware the issue is still there!
My call quality isnt crackly, when the person is speaking, its fine, but when they are not, I get distortion. sorta like a bass sound. which differs depending on where the person im talking to is, and what type of phone they are on.
I suppose its the HD2 trying to distinguish background noise.
Ok so this is problem which more than one person has, I would guess a hardware replacement is the only option.
I also get that bass effect, you have described it perfectly!
Damn!

U10 U Watch Review - not a bad smartwatch

So i got the watch thinking that it will be better than the U8 PRO ...at least that is how it's described.
This is a random review that might help some of you, if you want a budget smartwatch.
Video to Watch
1. It powers off and on really quick
2. battery lasts somewhere around 3 days for me but i'm a heavy user and most times it's on vibration , so lots of notifications , lots of screen time...you get it.
3. apps on it :
Phonebook - it's a bit hard to navigate through it as it has no way to search so if you have a lot of contacts like it do, you end up scrooooooolliing for hours to get to the bottom of the list
Dialer - normal dialer , works perfectly
Messaging - All your text messages are saved here, you can read them and delete them whenever you want.
Call Log - really handy when you want to call someone you've called recently and don't wanna go through the tedious phonebook
Notifier - This is where ALL the phone notifications show up. once they flash on the screen and you dismiss them this is where they go until you clear them.
Music - Works great if you want to listen to music on the watch, i didn't figure out how to control the music from my phone with the watch and i dont know if it's possible.
Camera - you can take remote pictures. don't know when i'll use this but it's a cool feature i guess.
Settings - Language, Time, date, time format , backlight duration and about phone
Anti-Lost - you can set it to vibrate when you get too far from the phone. i am not sure i have the hang of this one yet
Powersave - you can make the screen eye bleeding bright or normal
Ringtone - you have mute, vibrate and a few 8bit ringtones
Sleep Monitor - this is very ****ty and if you set your watch down it will think you're asleep, i can't figure out how to turn it off
Alarm - you can set alarms
Pedometer - it is what it is
Stopwatch - same as above
Menu Style - you have 2 menu styles, one with nice colors and one that looks pretty bad in my opinion
Clock Type - digital and analog. i really like the analog face
Find Phone - this will make your phone scream I AM HERE so loud and weird that you will be afraid to ever lose your phone again
eCompass - a compass
Overall i am pretty satisfied with this device for the money I paid for it. It displays all my notifications from ALL the aplications i've selected in the bTnotifier.apk
I wish i could find the PC drivers and maybe a different firmware for it so i can tinker a bit .
if you have any questions let me know.
I agree with the review.
I find the phonebook a bit fiddly and found it easier to use call history for regular contacts - warning! no lag, I was experimenting at 4:30am and it was only after 2 rings that I managed to disconnect
Not sure whether all websites sell this as having an OLED screen? Banggood does. If it is OLED then it has the worst sunlight display for an OLED i.e. just before sunset, cloudy winter British sun makes the screen unviewable. IMO it is a full colour LCD with poor sunlight display capability.
Battery drain indicator does not appear to be very linear - it suddenly dips. I haven't tried going more than 2 days between charges yet, but for me I am happy if I can get away with not having to charge every day.
When you're out and about, be careful not to long press the button - as watch will turn off. The startup tune is annoying, long and LOUD and will draw lots of attention.
Playing Blakes 7 by taking wrist calls is fun, but I don't really want to share my 2-way conversation with the rest of the world.
It's good enough as an ordinary watch to satisfy my need for a display that I can read at night without having to put on my longsight assisting glasses and the couple of times that I've received an awaited SMS or email when I'm on the go, when whipping out my smartphone would have slowed me down, have been a great feature.
Glad I bought it.
***Edit*** I must have been receiving calls when not wearing my glasses, as I've only just noticed that there is no caller information on incoming calls - which is my main requirement, so that I don't have to get my big phone out to check whether I want to take the call - so now, for me, it is just a watch.
Has anyone had caller information on the U8?
Also, when receiving a call, the call goes to headset i.e. watch - sometimes when I click off headset to take the call on the phone, a couple of seconds later it reverts back to headset - maybe it is a phone issue, flipping annoying.
Hi,I also have a U10, and let me tell you that if it comes to the appearance of the watch and the analog clock is u8 August I like it much better. I hope that the manufacturer will begin to support the u10 because for now on their side In the download section is only firmware for u8. Well if they made a new appearance as an analog clock in u8. In my watch is M51_OPTSW.FN1.V003 firmware has installed.
Is it possible to have the watch face displayed permanently without pressing the button?
I haven't found that option, and I sincerely doubt that this is possible .
Autonomy would then probably be 24 hours or less .
I also have just received this watch
Not bad for the money but I think the bt problem with missing caller info on phone numbers is a Bluetooth problem itself
The reason I say that is if I receive a call on the head unit in my car, it displays the number but not the caller just the same as the U10 watch.
I will keep this a while then buy a better one when things settle as I would like to put android wear on it and change faces from time to time.
Not bad for £27 and a 3 week wait.
I just received this watch so far i love it i just needed something to forward calls and messages to my wrist.
Sense when i get home i just slap my phone on the charger and kinda forget about it which makes me miss a bunch of calls and text .
But its pretty hard to miss something vibrating on your wrist.
I just wish it had some more watch faces and maybe some way to make the watch turn on by flicking your wrist instead of hitting the button.
Have had it for a few days now and going to give it away as a xmas present and wait for (asus zen, moto 360 etc to get to a reasonable price.
One big gripe is that when you answer your phone then have to talk into the watch as you can not hear the caller on your phone.
As conversation is a bit loud and tinny and there is no way of quickly switching bt off then it is more trouble than it's worth.
Can't complain about price though.
Another gripe:
Asus zen watch released about 2 weeks ago in states $200
Asus zen watch released 22nd dec here in the uk £200
So instead of £128 they rip us off AGAIN.
Same thing appears to be happening with the moto 360

Yeah i agree with you and while the prices are not quite as bad over here they still cost a fair bit more then the base US price.
And i found one mild annoyance the metal bits on the watch are not nickel free so a bit of a head up for those with nickel allergies like me.
I dealt with it by coating the metal bits with some clear nail polish but i cant really complain considering the price.
I just wish there was like a oneplus one style smart watch nice specs and design with a decent price tag

The price is hyped due to import duties etc, you can buy it from the USA if you like for nearly half the price, but you will end up paying £70 import plus Plus P&P = pretty much £200.
I buy a lot of parts for my guitar from the USA as things are half the price, Seymour Duncan pickup cost me £45 from the USA with free shipping, no import duties due to being marked as a gift, here the the UK the same pickup is £75 plus P&P, if you can get friendly with the staff there then you can get them to mark it as a gift and therefore avoid any import duties.
Just got a U10 for myself and a u8 for my partner.... u10 is nicer when compared with the u8(and u8 crap menus etc) but u8 has more hardware(eg altimeter and barometer) instead of compass on the U10) !!!
just wish there was a better firmware for the 10.... would be good to hear the ring tone as installed on the phone(u8 pushes the ring tone and notification tones too...) and be able to reply to a text..
All in all we are reasonably happy with them and as our entry models to the smartwatch market they are a good choice but just wish we had both gone for u10 as is a better choice!

u8 / u10 comparison
Hi
I ended up buying the u8 instead of the u10 as I dived in and bought it without doing my homework and realising the u10 existed.
I am really tempted to put my hand in my pocket again and buy a u10 because I have enjoyed the u8 and found it quite useful.
But, it has a few niggles that I was hoping you guys might be able to help me with before I do.
Here are my niggles with my u8
1. When I get an email I get the notification but it truncates the subject and displays my email address and there appears to be no way of reading the email. Is this the case on the u10?
2. When I get a phone call it sometimes displays the name from its contacts but more than often just displays the phone number. Reading some of the earlier posts on this thread seems to suggest that the u10 ONLY ever displays the number. Is that correct?
3. On the u8 the speaker is on the left hand side which is pointing up my sleeve and makes it hard to hear. Is the speaker on the left on the u20 as well?
Those are my main niggles with the u8. Apart from them I really like the watch.
What do you think? Is it worth upgrading to the u10?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

When you get a sms will your U8 vibrate? I can not get mine to...or get it out of Military time?
I have firmware version:
Version:
M52_khr.fn1.v001
serial#:
Build time: 2014/12/19
10:49
U10 watch of my gf:
VERSION:
M51P_OPTSW.FN1.V003
serial#:
Build time: 2014/10/31
19:43
They have different look of analog clocks
Yes, when I receive a text message it does vibrate, displays the phone number or caller and the message.
I don't know what you mean by "Military Time" but I am able to toggle between a "digital/numbers" and "analogue/hands" watch face.
Very nice.
somewhere where download M52_KHR.FN1.V001? thank you very much
