Cracked my stupid screen. Replace or repair? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the price drop, this seems less and less financially appealing but:
I dropped my Nexus 4 five inches from the ground and the bottom half is non responsive. I can see on the screen but the touch is dead.
I have a Nexus 7 2013 edition 32GB. I thought of consolidating my devices into one and getting a Note 2 after selling the dead N4 and my new N7. I feel like the 5.5" might not be enough. Is the N4 worth repairing with the price drop?
It just sucks to have a broken phone. I have no idea what to do with it.

i'd just ebay it as broken as is and buy a new phone

[Q] Should you blindly buy Nexus4 or wait a while.

All are really crazy in Selling their phones to buy the Nexus 4 , also with such a great price. Should I do the same , i am confused. I think let Nexus4 play around for some days and then grab it. What should i do?
Basically I'm thinking "failure" is a relative term. Even if the Nexus 4 is a fantastic failure, it is still worlds better than my current phone, and damned cheap without forcing me into a contract. So I'm getting one ASAP, if for a couple months it can only utilize 50% of it's hardware capabilities, it is still twice my current phone, and easily the equal of any phone that is $350 off contract. And once it really is operating at the peak for what its specs say, then it will blow $700 phones out of the water too.

the most important thing of any nexus: timely updates for a few years to come. that was the first thing that attracted me to it before all the rumors. then i saw the announcement, and boy, do those specs look awesome for only $349 (16GB)

My thoughts exactly. It's a huge improvement on the phone I'm using now. For $300-$350 I'd rather buy this brand new than a used phone without warranty. And it's just so sexy looking. (At least I think so.)
I'm honestly not worried about most of the complaints, with the exception of battery life, but I think it will iron out when the actual production model and/or software are released.

lol, the only thing I don't like is that it is completely flat, I loved the curvature to the S and Gnex. Other than that I think it looks spectacular, and the back is sweet. From what I've read google was trying to make it feel better in hand than the other devices, and the other nexi were really the only devices out there curved like that, so whatev. I'm stoked :victory:

Its not completely flat. The left and right edges curve into the sides.
I would wait til the gorilla glass on back proves itself--

I mean the profile is flat, like every other phone. So it's not a big deal, I just really liked the curved profiles of the last two nexi
same question
How likely is it that there are issues with the first production round, performance-wise (i.e. not the glass back), which can't be solved with a software update? I'm a little naive, and I tried a bit to search for an answer, but this thread is the closest I came up with.
Based on the wording of your question and being your first post--welcome--I would wait. Always a chance for something not right. I bought the first Nexus--N1--sight unseen from Google when they came out. Wanted to root and flash. It had a bad touchscreen, as most did, but livable.
Many people here are hard core flashers and want cutting edge phones... So, they don't worry about the risk.
Unless you are in that category or have need to buy now, I would wait.
I don't understand why people are so concerned with the gorilla glass on the back. Does the gorilla glass on the front not breakable?

Because it is something extra to break. We accept glass fronts because they are necessary. It's like windows in your house, there is a general amount of structure that most people are okay with sacrificing to have windows. But you wouldn't want your entire house glass.
Personally I like the glass back and am willing to just be careful fore sake of aesthetics. A lot of people don't think the looks are worth the extra breakable surface.
I have an S3 and have thought about switching, but I really dig the S3's huge screen and fancy software features. I am very conflicted on this... the S4 Pro is nice but how much difference is it going to make in day to day operation.

If you have it front and back--you double your chances of something breaking, excluding the sides. It looks good, not sure why it is needed though. It would not stop me from buying it, if i wanted the phone. Deciding btwn Note 2 and N4 atm.

For day to day not much at all to be honest most current android devices can handle day to day operations well.
Personally the N4 has the better screen compared to the SGS3 but that's my opinion. You've got removable battery and expandable storage on your device.

I have been pondering about upgrading my N1 (too old but usable with a variant of CM9). Wait for full review on the device like audio quality before jumping in. Apart from non-changeable battery and no micro SD card slot (and maybe glass back), this phone looks tempting to me. Not sure why they don't have 32G version yet.

[Q] Cracked nexus 7 screen, some functionality.

This past weekend I had to go through horrifying experience having to deal my nexus 7's screen cracking. Long story short, my girlfriend, younger brother and I were hanging out in my room, I had left my nexus 7 on the left side of my bed and got up to get something in my room, mean while, my obvious younger brother decided it would be a good idea to sit exactly where I had left my nexus 7...if only he had stayed in the chair that was in my room. Well, my nexus 7 happened to be facing front side up and when he sat on my beautiful tablet, the screen cracked... the 50 dollars Gumdrop Drop Tech Series Case I had invested in proved to be no match to his rear end.
I sat there quite silent for a couple minutes, no words to say, it was just as time itself had paused to morn for my loss. Well anyhow, I ordered a brand spanking new 32GB nexus 7 last night and I'm expecting it to arrive tomorrow . I was fiddling around with my nexus 7 and I managed to enable "show touches" in the developer options by attaching a mouse to my device. I noticed that top left corner of the screen gave touch feed back.
My question is why the small portion of the touch screen responds to touch when the majority of the screen doesn't, this anomaly (from reading various forum posts, the nexus 7 screen isn't suppose to respond to touch once the screen is cracked) leaves me pondering if there was something I could do to make the other portion of the screen to work. I was originally looking into screen replacement options, but from what I read and saw first hand, it's better to buy a whole new unit (like I had mentioned I had done in the earlier text) than to purchase a brand new digitizer. The other option would be to find a bricked nexus 7 on the internet and salvage the screen, and trying to find a low priced bricked nexus 7 on the internet is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.
Now, I'm a college student (majoring in Computer Networking System Administrations ) and blew 3/4 of my savings for a new unit (I'm poor!). If there is no financially feasible method for replacing the screen enabling being able sell the device for higher price, how much do you folks think I could sell it for? Keep in mind, my cracked nexus 7 is 16GB model and is unlocked (rooted) and is in pretty the good shape despite the cracked screen, the actual display has not been damaged, it's just touch digitizer that is not working properly.
Thanks for reading my lengthy post/ramble
So I take it your brother who broke it won't be compensating you for breaking your tablet? I would be pissed, he should at least pay for some of the cost of the replacement.

Well he's actually going compensate me with 50 bucks so that's nice.
Hi, I have exactly the same problem and had the same idea. If i can calibrate the digitizer to exactly 50% of the original dimensions I could use the working area of the screen to operate the device. Did you find a way to do this?

Why you shouldn't buy an Asus Nexus 7 (2013)

I recommend NOT buying an Asus device. The screen on my three month old Asus 2013 Nexus 7 cracked without ANY mishandling, misuse, abuse, falls, bumps, temperature extremes or having anything dropped on it. It was a spontaneous crack that I believe was due to some defect. I sent it in to Asus explaining what happened and I was told I'd have to pay for the repair.
If you do a search for spontaneous Asus Nexus 7 screen cracks you will see there are many people describing this problem.
Either Asus has flimsy products that break under normal use, or they have defective products that they don't support. Either way you will regret buying this tablet.
Remember that the Asus Nexus 7 DOES NOT have Gorilla Glass, only Corning scratch resistant glass. This screen WILL CRACK and you will be out over $200 or be expected to pay $165 plus tax for repair. In other words DON'T buy this Asus device. At least wait till they start using Gorilla Glass.
Save your selves a huge hassle in trying to deal with Asus and losing out on a bunch of money. Buy something else.
Four months here, no problems with the glass.
maybe u accidentally dropped it while u sleep walking? lol

i'd mine for 4 months also and few days ago the touch screen stopped working and after i restarted my tablet i got stock on google logo till now i cant turn on the tablet..
My screen didn't crack but the rubber/plastic frame cracked. Sent in to ASUS and they repaired it. They switched touchscreen, too, but didn't help with touchscreen issues.
In some german forums you can read about at least 2 people having the same issue with cracked touchscreen. They were treaten the same like here. But one of them is a very active forum member so I trust him as I've seen my cracked frame - and I used the Nexus always in a case and didn't do anything which could have caused a crack although I can't guarantee that I'm not walking while sleeping...
As the screen or better the touchscreen is often bad you shouldn't wonder if there's more terribly wrong with it...
Just my 2 cents.

While I agree that ASUS' support is rather iffy (ex ASUS Transformer Prime owner here) - the reality is that the N7's glass is indeed Gorilla Glass.
I think for most people, the attraction is getting a pretty high end, compact tablet for a very low price. So we factor in the odds of failure against the cost of repair or replacement. I don't think I'd ever buy a $500 tablet directly from ASUS, just because of my experiences with the Transformer... but buying a tablet that's technically a Google device (I bought mine from Google directly) means that Goog is going to take some of the hit if something goes wrong.
However, a broken screen just doesn't 'happen'. Gorilla Glass, for example, doesn't prevent breaking - it prevents scratches and reduces the chance of breaking. Corning even goes to some length to point this out. It's quite possible your unit had a small crack in the glass at the edge where you didn't see it and it expanded out into a full crack. If that's what happened, yeah, you're kind of screwed since there's almost no way to prove it wasn't misuse.
As unfair as it may sound, you got really unlucky. But it's not a typical problem.
I bought one and I'd buy one again if I had to, but I don't disagree with the notion that this product has terrible quality control. My first one had a bulging battery, random reboots, touch screen issues, and wifi issues. I RMA'd it after the touch screen stopped functioning completely and the glass actually broke while it was sitting still charging. Despite all of that, I can't think of another device that would give me less trouble and at the same time allow me to do everything that the Nexus 7 does.

Have hadn't any issues with cracking glass on either the 2012 or 2013 N7 but then I've never dropped it and keep it protected in a Case Logic sleeve when not in use or when transporting. If it's abused just buy another since they're on sale instead of blackmailing Asus.

But I'll have to agree here with quality control, think it's more of a Google thing. I've never had any issues with my TF701 tablet, but I had screen bleeds on my nexus 7 1st gen, nexus 10, nexus 4... I think its Google trying to fit all these high end specs into a low cost device... Nexus devices usually come with some QC issues. Personally never had any issues with my other AsusTeK computer devices like the tf701, my PC motherboards, and laptops. If I were u I would just keep RMA'ing till u get a good device, I went thru 6 nexus 10's before they gave me a good one. I had asked Google to open up the box before they ship out and they did

For any device, some of its unfortunate owners will one day found themselves facing the same situation as op, so I guess the solution is to buy one of those insurance plans?
Used it since the first released day and no problem so far. I even don't use the screen protector at all and the screen doesn't have any scratches (till now).

I think something people have to remember is the Nexus 7 is a hugely popular item and MANY people have bought it, but not nearly as many people are on this or other forums, so you tend to only hear the negative loud people. I'm not saying people haven't had problems, just that this forum is biased towards perfectionists and the most vocal people.
I'm very satisfied with my nexus 7 (2013)...

Damn, I must be one of the lucky ones, no multitouch issues (or any other for that matter). I think it goes like this: those with problems will be vocal and complain whereas the ones with working tablets are actually using and enjoying them and not posting about it.
Maybe people with no issue need to start gloating about it so the ones with problems can see they actually are in the minority
Edit: just for the records, I did have the screen lift issue on my old Grouper, but both my Deb and my wife's Tilapia never had any problems.

What it means to stand by your product

Ok it a company says they stand by their product, I think they should mean it. Take for example. when HTC release the One M8 they said that they stood by their product and put there money where their mouth was by offering a free 6 month screen replacement program to go along with the phone.
With the Nexus 6 and all their other phones, Motorola says that they "stand by their product" but what I just learned is that they only stand by their product if you PAY them to do so. The Nexus 6 is a very large phone sporting a 5.9" screen. And given it's size and weight, I believe that Motorola choose to skip a few corner when it came to the screen construction, resulting in a screen as shatter resistant as the iPhone 4.
Note to Motorola, if you are going to say that you stand by your product, then STAND BY YOU PRODUCT if not, then shut the heck up. I will keep this crack phone, which cracked by falling between my car seat without any scratch on its body , (only because i have no other phone) but as soon as HTC release a new phone with Android 5.0 I'm switching company, and sticking with the company that actually knows what it means to stand by their product.
You know I was kind of thinking about this when I bought the Motorola Nexus 6. I thought to myself man why don't they offer something like HTC does with the cracked screens. The screens don't cost that much and not many people are going to break them compared to the amount of phones they're going to sell.
I broke the screen on my Galaxy S2 couple years back I took it in to sprint to see how much it was going to cost to get fixed and they did it for free because so many of the screens were breaking. I didn't have to pay for the warranty claim, they didn't even do it as a warranty claim they just did it because so many of the screens were breaking.
To be completely honest I probably would have gotten the Samsung Note 4 over the Nexus 6 just because of their good track record with current screens but I really wanted a pure Nexus experience.
I really hope that I don't become disappointed with this phone.
Being that it is the new Nexus phone though I'm sure we'll see replacement glass on eBay for like $10~20.00 within a couple of months. You always do for the Samsung phones. In fact I just replace the glass on my friends s5, it was $12.00 shipped for the glass, we bought 2 he got a spare!

Unfortunately, the screen for the nexus 6 is not cheap to make ifixit did the tear down on it and the display and the digitizer is fused together so that will drive up the cost. The overall experience of the phone is great it just becomes apparently that there wasn't a lot of money going to the construction of the phone exterior. But if you haven't brought this phone yet I recommend going with the Note 4 because of Samsung success with the Note series.
This was Motorola first phablet and they just did not know how to make a sturdy one.
They all use gorilla glass 3. How is it motorola's fault you broke your screen. It's always someone else's fault.

Yes but again, different phone have different thickness of GG, given the larger screen size, the GG on the N6 is thinner than say the Droid Turbo in order to compensate for the phones' weight, width, and height.
The extra thinnest and the curve edges of the screen equates to a weaker constructed screen.

you have no proof of that, and it sounds like you're just blaming others for your problems.

If purchased from t mobile, you do get 1 year manufacturer warranty

Its not a major issue so long as you dont drop it. The issue is the fact that its much more likely to break compared to other phones release this year or even last year.

Take better care of your phone. Of the six devices I've had, I was unlucky enough to break exactly one screen, on my Droid DNA. Guess what? My fault. I then proceeded to pay to have it fixed myself. It was my responsibility to take care of my phone, not HTC's. I blamed myself. Do you see a pattern here?

I don't know how many of you play the stocks, but there were tons of videos out about sapphire vs gorilla glass when I was investing in GTAT pre them going to OTC.
Anyways, all the guys saying they have dropped their phone prior, all I can say is that is how it starts. Even though you do not notice the crack, it creates mini fractures/fissures in the glass that when dropped again, it will cause it to crack.
Additionally, the construction of can cause an impact on whether or not the glass fractures as easily too. Think of cars with a sunroof.
If screens are breaking at a high frequency, usually it deals with the manufacturer's bad construction.

Congratulation on being Mr. Responsible I guess, I mean your parents must be so proud...First of all guy when I had my Thunderbolt and I was out for a run and it flew out my hand and the screen shattered 9 ways to hell and back, did I blame HTC? no I didn't because that was my fault. I got a new phone....but when I am driving in my car and my phone slide out my pocket and down the side of my car seat and cracks...btw this is something that has happen with my previous phones including my Thunderbolt and I've never had an issue.....well in that case it is clearly shoddy workmanship or like @uhguy said, a freak accident. But its nice to know how responsible you are, really it is, we need more people like you in the world.

Busted Screen

My son wanted an Iphone due to peer pressure at school so I finally caved since his was due for an upgrade. I wanted to keep his phone as a backup and replace my old Note 3 as a wifi gaming device. I didn't realize he had busted the screen and now I can't use the insurance option to get it fixed. Any options out there for getting the glass repaired?
Your son had an S7 and downgraded to an iPhone? Damn shame.
How broken is the screen. It seems like every single phone I see on eBay has a broken screen so someone might buy it. If you're only using it as a WiFi gaming device you can buy a good condition phone on eBay with a bad ESN.

IKR all these kids think Iphone is the bomb. I had an Iphone 7+ and it drove me nuts. I returned it and got the Google Pixel XL. I wanted the Note 7 but the whole battery thing ruined that. Now I am stuck in a contract because I did a trade in. Maybe the Note 9 will be out by the time I can upgrade again.
I ordered a glass screen protector for the S7 edge in the hopes that it will stick and not break anymore. I was hoping to keep it as a backup phone and yes use it as a gaming device to replace my old Note 3. I think with a glass protector it might be okay.
