I've noticed countless CM/STOCK/PA based or mixed ROMs, it haven't seen a lick or mention of AOKP. Are they going to develop a 4.3 build or is there any new news on the ROM?

Of course it is. They're merging atm. Visit the official thread on the original development forum.

Original development is for completely (or based upon AOSP or kernel source) stuff, CyanogenMod, custom kernels, that sort of thing. The other forum is for cooked ROMs, themes and that sort of thing. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/introducing-original-development-forums-for-more-devices/

What is your favorite rom (including plain ol' stock), why, and kernel?
can I use the Gapps I am got for the S3?
also, what other apps / tweaks do you guys recommend?
I never used an Android as a tablet so it's some what of an uncharted waters for me.

So why don't you do something about that ?
My best tip is to do some reading. These same questions are always going to get the same answers ...it's all up to the user and their needs.

This. I planned on getting the Nexus 7, so I decided to keep checking in at this forum to see recent developments and stuff. By the time I got the device, I was already aware of what defects to look for, what ROM's and kernels I would try first, etc...

Seriously, Custom roms are not worth of it.. or well not yet. I've tried over 6 differents rom and came back to Stock. Stock 4.1.1 has really great performance. The only useful thing I can think of is to flash a different kernel over the stock rom to overclock.

I disagree. Paranoid Android gives you control over your layout unlike stock.

I can read, but at the same time, I created this thread to get other peoples opinion in one place rather than going all over the place. and as for above, I was looking at PA too.
Can I use Gapps (7.27 i think) I am using for the S3 or does the Nexus 7 have it's own different Gapps?
Woohoo! Can't wait for cm10 team to start merging in the new 4.2 goodness!

Yep looking forward to this to. I have been running Siyah Kernel for a couple of weeks and it's great to be able to switch between the stable stock based rom and CM10
Yep same as on the Nexus 7 forums too, looking forward to having 4.2 AOSP on both my Galaxy S3 and Nexus 7:laugh:

Won't take long to CM10-4.2 get released. I guess 4.2 uses the same base and stuff, so won't be a problem. Still, I may stick with Samsung. I love CM10 but not CM10 for i9300. Colors doesn't look good, laggy and a lot of random bugs.
Looking forward to it. Unfortunately cm10 on i9300 is beyond the team's control . If Samsung took their thumbs outta their asses and start releasing the RIGHT source and docs for Xynos, we might actually get somewhere. Its a miracle we've come this far without it.

I see a lot of people comment that Touchwiz ROMs run more smoothly than CM based builds. This is exactly the opposite of my experience. I find the Cyanogen team's work to be second to none, which is remarkable considering they're volunteering their time.

It's freaking me out a bit that my Verizon Galaxy Nexus will get a 4.2 custom ROM before my Nexus 4. WTF?
With the CM vs TW ROM debate, is there one Vanilla ROM that you think proves that theory that they run smoother and faster because I'd love to test it if there is one. I've always also felt that TW runs smoother? Maybe I'm wrong. Is LiquidSmooth a good example?

I think that comment probably did that more than anyone else's. I think it's a perfectly valid part of the discussion. I'm not suggesting we sit here and go back and forth on ROM names. But I'll ask my question in a different way. What is it about the AOSP release that's out there now that isn't working well that will be improved by this 4.2 release? Ultimately, this isn't about one ROM base vs another it's about whether AOSP can be made to work bug-free with the I9300 hardware, isn't it?

I believe it's also to do with what new FEATURES have been added to the new AOSP release and less to do with how much stability it will add (since that is dependent more on Samsung releasing the source than what AOSP has to offer in terms of stability).
Some of us would like to make use of the new features of 4.2 and not have to wait for an official Samsung update.
Having said all this, at the end of the day, that's my point of view and I don't expect everyone to agree.

Quick question. How long do you think we'll be waiting for root and custom ROMs? I would think it would take longer than usual. I mean brand new hardware AND brand new JB 4.2...
I seriously wish I had the time to figure this stuff out on my own but I have to rely on brilliant devs on xda...

Well, JBQ said that the Nexus 4 isn't supported in AOSP, so for a while there will be few custom ROMs. Maybe some minor stuff, but definitely nothing built from source (CM, AOKP, PA) until when (or if ever) they decide to include the device tree in AOSP.
There will be custom kernels, though, as that source is released.

So lots of talk about restrictions due to the N4 not being AOSP, how hard do you think it will be to port ROMs at least until you are able to build from source? And since the kernel code is already released, new kernels should be a sinch, right?

Couldnt we use roms from that new optimus since it has the same internals as this device?

cant we port the cm10 rom from the galaxy nexus for the time being? or will that screw stuff up with the n4? sucks theres no AOSP support...yet
Android 4.3/CM10.2 ROMS are growing in number, and many former Android 4.2 and CM 10.1 ROMS have been evolved into the newer builds. Problem is that Graphic Glitches on Android 4.3 for Samsung Exynos phones are substantial, and they make the user experience quite unstable and at times very irritating.
We need developers to continue updating 4.2 ROMS with the latest features (e.g. Focal, HALO2, etc...) for a while until the Graphic glitches on 4.3 ROMS are dealt with sufficiently. Maybe a new PA or CM 10.1 ROM would be a good place to start. Current 4.2.2 ROMS still being developed lack many new features and recent updates.
Thanks for everyone who helps. If you agree with the idea, press THANKS below to show the number of those interested.

Try out SlimRom build 8. It's 4.2.2 and stable, fast and battery friendly and include all the customization options you need.
With that said I would also like to say that my modded stock and odexed 4.1.2 is working like a charm and nothing beats it.
Try developing yourself and you will know how difficult it is. Just begging and demanding don't work. Go fork some repos and port 4.3 changes back into 4.2
And the issue of graphic glitches is not anyone's but Samsung's fault because they haven't released updated GPU drivers. And non of the 4.3 Roms mentioned stable so such glitches are expected.
If you are not satisfied with whats avilablr then either make your own stuff or suffice with whats available.
