Fine by me - I don't think Beats audio adds anything. There are better EQ alternatives for us anyway.
What do you guys think?

Agreed, beats is cool and all but they need to have a equalizer to adjust sound for those who don't like a flat sound...

To an advanced user.... For your average Joe beats audio does make a difference from hearing it and when making a decision. Trust me, I've seen plenty of people sway towards HTC simply due to beats. It may he a marketing ploy, but it works.

I like the audio boost from the beats audio integration. Definitely sounds much better with it than without it. Here on XDA it won't matter though since it's just additional tweaking of a rom to add those features on a HTC device not sure about other devices though.

The articles that imply a "messy divorce" are just sensationlistic. HTC only owns 25% of Beats which means they exert very little influence over their direction. HP uses Beats and their branding without any ownership stake and I'm sure HTC could also by paying a licensing fee (they probably are already). Reading between the lines I'd guess that Beats' wants a more deep pocketed investor than HTC to buy their share and then some to provide additional capital Beats could use to grow their business. They tried this same thing a while ago and didn't want the buyer of HTC's share to apply any coventants (restrictions) to the deal nor prohibit the distribution of the new capital to exisiting shareholders (Beats' owners). Both of those requests are rediculous and have been dropped from this current attempt at refinancing. HTC got $150MM for the 25% of Beats they sold last year so should get something similar this year. Let's face it, they can use the money.
I listened to Beats for about 2 minutes before disabling it and never looking back. There is nothing sonically accurate or pleasing to me. I would not let that influence my decision when buying a smartphone, nor would most folks.

Which itself is a trademarked brand name for audio tuning.
Great news for consumers and professionals around the world who love sound. DTS, Inc. is excited to announce that we have completed our acquisition of SRS Labs and we are now ONE company.
Small speakers on most portable devices often result in “ho-hum” audio experience. But, MP3 Players, iPod Docking Stations, Portable Media Players, and Portable Navigation Devices specially tuned with SRS WOW HD™

Kinda sad, it make the 'boomsound' speakers sound better for sure. And it's system-wide, I'm pretty sure you cannot get that without root.
Pretty sure the speakers were artificially limited (volume capped) without "beats" on.
And to get the same effect, use an EQ in a music app like Power Amp.

Just using the speakers for a quick game or most youtube videos it's better ON.
Listening to other sources, particularly a high end headphone setup definitely turn it off! With classical music it sounds like a really cheap gate opening and closing on subtle passages almost as if you're listening to a 12bit recording! Bloody awful!
If you want the speakers to play louder turn it off as well. The lower frequency range is boosted considerably with it on and this uses amplifier headroom resulting in a considerably lower maximum volume.

I actually like the Beats logo.
Beats and poweramp is mind blowing. Beats on speaker is better than ANY dsp or eq settings, and speaker without beats sounds like pants. I prefer the beats branding to the old dolby branding on the HTD Desire HD.
Beats headphones are selling well due to advertising.
There are far, far greater implications if Beats goes through with this breakup that have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you have an optional Beats toggle on your next HTC phone.
Right now, it's more about whether or not there will even be a next HTC phone. Right now, things aren't looking good for them.

At their current market cap (amount of stock outstanding times current stock price) HTC's valued at $4.4B. Based on recent investments recieved, Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has a valuation of $10B. Why? They sell more phones in China than Apple and came up with new and unique approaches to the market that have resonated with consumers.
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/77ea45d4-0bde-11e3-8f77-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2ctthNOBq
As for HTC, Peter Chou personally ruined them. By sticking to an ego-driven failing formula of trying to out "Apple" and out "Samsung" each respective company at the high-end of the market he allowed his customer base (scale) to erode irreversibly screwing up his costs (profit). And not having low/mid-scale devices and any meaningful distribution in emerging markets gave him no "plan B" when his high-end push failed. And the One, while inarguably the best device HTC's ever made, is a commercial failure. That's confirmed by HTC missing their own revenue (sales) projection in Q1 and Q2 and projecting a loss in Q3. The market believes HTC is a prime acquisition candidate because of their low valuation, especially for the Chinese manufacturers that don't have their engineering, design, and production expertise. So it's highly doubtful they'll ever go away (at least the brand) but it's equally doubtful they can continue to exist as they currently are.
It would be no great loss in my opinion? I prefer using power amp and it's graphic equalizer.
I have disabled beats on every phone I had since my sensation xe.
The fact they don't supply beats headphones as a standard on HTC high end hand sets would mean I wouldn't notice a difference.

Correct, they have been using different max volume levels for beats on + beats off since the Sensation XE - indeed there is a mod for sensation that uses this same trick to boost beats off volume as well.

Long time lurker here and I have migrated from Winmo back in the day to Symbian and then to HTC's N1. Have also tried many other deivces along the way but thought this could have been it!
Unfortunately, I have been spoiled by the Nokia 5800. The sound quality from this thing is superb both for music playback and for speakerphone and I use it for both these purposes a lot. I had read about the N1 sound quality but thought the other bells and whistles would make me forget about it, sadly not.
The N1 I am sure is a great device but for now I am back to the Nokia. Perhaps with a little more time and patience I would learn to love the operating system of Android 2.1 but the hardware limitations (speaker and camera in the main) have led me to place my 2 day old Nexus One on the market.
For anyone interested, it's in the marketplace HERE for £449.99.
I will keep a close eye on Android and with MWC just around the corner, perhaps I will be tempted back when the hardware is available to match the O/S!
That's $707.25... I can buy a new on and have it sent overnight for ~$600.
Not trying to troll or anything, just a tip if you plan on selling it to anybody in the US.
I would troll.. thats a ripoff and he knows it
To bad it did not work out for U...mine keeps getting better by the day! Well best of luck to ya selling it at that price...
I am going to bite my tongue... your logic is very flawed in many ways.
It may not be a rip off when you include the VAT he would have had to pay. We can get it cheaper here in the U.S. sure, but what is the total bill (including VAT) for someone in the U.K.?
IRT sound quality the speaker phone is utter crap but music is not bad if you have a decent set of headphones attached.
It sounds about right. My total came up about £441 after the VAT.
I agree re speaker sound but I'm saving up for QC 15 and I hope it will sound good enough not to buy an dedicated player.
I have been using my Nexus one since the day after it was announced. I also have an HD2, iPhone 3Gs and we just got a new Palm Pre Plus to play around with testing for our users. Overall, my favorite is the N1 for customization, but there is one thing with the N1 that keeps pulling me back to my jailbroke iPhone and that is they keyboard. The iPhone keyboard is just so much easier to use. The only reason I can understand why is that it has multitouch. I often miss letters while keying on the N1 and best I can tell its when I hit the next letter before I lift my other thumb off the previous one. So I can type so much quicker on the iPhone over the N1. Why can't the keyboard be multitouch on the N1?
Why use speaker phone, and the external speaker to listen to music anyway? Get a decent set of headphones and a BT ear peace and be done. The former were never intended to be used in such a way for longer than when you have nothing better available and need to set the phone down. Its like expecting your netbook to game like your desktop, you set your self up to be disappointed.

I agree with this so much, I honestly do not know what you were expecting from a mere cellphone - even though some may have superb sound playback, I honestly never have "high expectations" for the quality of the speaker. Honestly, I never knew people so extensively used the speakerphone on a device enough to actually make them completely regret the phone.
I also thought that having a 5 megapixel camera (with flash) would make the phone an awesome device to take pictures with, it seems to me you simply wanted to complain, then sell the device - and this seemed to be the correct place to do it. I know that I'm wrong, but thats my 2 cents on the matter..
I use my N1 for music all the time, and think it sounds great. In the dock over bluetooth to my computer's speakers it sounds great. With my QC2's plugged in it sounds like I'm in da club.
The speakerphone is a speakerphone...I don't expect 5.1 out of it. What's with people???
I hate the standard OSK, so I installed the HTC-IME, and love it! Why do people quit so easily these days when we have SO many options?

So your only reason, let me rephrase, the ***ONLY*** reason you are returning it is because the speaker is not loud enough?
A) There is an audio hack in the works that will make the N1 MUCH louder than your Nokia, guaranteed. Here are the links for the N1 (in production) and G1 hacks:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618058
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517745
B) Why don't you try using the rest of the phone???
C) You're selling it for $175 more than the unsubsidized cost. WTF????
This has to be one of the dumbest threads I've seen in a long time.
????????
He's right in that the phone's speaker does leave something to be desired--Nokia phones generally have higher-equality speakers, what with them taking their "music phones" awfully seriously (I came to the N1 from the 5730 Xpressmusic: ****ty phone in every way but playback quality). It's a shame their devices aren't good for much else. Well, except durability. Those little buggers can withstand a lot of abuse.
I find it amazing that just because of the speaker he's prepared to loose all the other fantastic benefits of this amazing device... but still, different people, different priorities I guess. Myself I bought an £8 Veho360, very small and makes the music/podcasts sound like they're coming from a Hi Fi (Well, not quite... )
On the price, it is a bit cheeky he's trying to then make a profit. Mine cost £355 shipped and I may get a £60 VAT receipt soon. Having said that, there are peope on eBay asking £500 for it... I assume some idiots pay that.
Yeah, I wish my speaker was louder too (because I prefer to carry only one device to act as phone, tiny computer, media player and all) but it's far from a dealbreaker. Listening to music on it while out in public places is obnoxious, anyway, so I use the headphone.
Speaking of which, many people in countries other than the US/UK/Singapore/Hong Kong are quite willing to pay in the region of $600-800 for the phone. Makes me wish I'd ordered a few extra. Would've made a tidy profit.

I have to say this is way off the mark.
firstly the 5800 is rubbish. I had one and the earphone volume was ultra low until you pushed the case. Faulty connection in 90% of 5800's made. the OS is a nasty mess of s60v3 and touch. Sometimes you need single touch, sometimes you need double touch.
The contruction quality is poor, to be charitable.
You might be right about the sound quality, I gave my 5800 back within 2 days so never really tried it. but HTC devices normally have pretty good sound, perhaps a third party player with different codec might improve, or further roms might improve in the future.
On every other stat I wouldn't even bother to compare the 5800 to the N1

A bit unfair on the guy, I agree the speaker is silly bad, and why? Nokia can and do put some nice speakers in some phones, 5800 and N95's come to mind as brilliant, and some stinkers a bad as the N1, like the E72, N97, N97 mini.
Even the iPhone speaker from flipping 3 years ago sounds quite nice when you have no choice but to use it instead of headphones.

Did any one else have the same experience?
The SQ of music on Android seems to be a LOT better than on WinMO?
BTW I am using the nuForce NE-6 IEMs found here:

did u install SRS WOW HD sound driver for windows Mobiles??
Good observation
Yeah it really is a big difference in quality...I'm glad someone else noticed it. i really like to listen to music on the headphones now! Oh and Srs Wow only alters frequencies...the quality and clearness is still average.
Yup I did and even then the sound on android looks like it has more stereo separation and more dynamics and sounds deeper whereas the same on winmo sounded too flat even with SRS WOW...
Just the opposite for me, but I use pocket player rather than relying on core player or winmo player. PP offers features to numerous for the average Joe (that's me) to fully use, but the equalizer and fader/balance control are excellent.
Maybe Android market offers some nice players, but with so many limitations in the current HD2 Android offerings, I'm sticking with WinMo and keeping an eye out for the lil' robot just for giggles.
Really better on android form me!!!
really nice work dev!

I thought I was imagining things, but apparently I wasn't
I don't get why playing audio in windows mobile is so hard, it sounds worse than it should be and there is always a half of a second pause between songs.
I use S2P on winmo and I must admit the electrical noise from the device is not good - it is best when device is idle and screen off, but tbh it's pretty crap on both winmo AND android....I am using Westone UM2s and ATH-CK100s with ACS custom sleeves and I hear a LOT of electrical noise in both Oses.
I even near noise with the stock earbuds - dud phone? or do you think I'm sensitive?
It is important to note that the audio deficiencies are clearest with classical music, opera, vocals, jazz etc. Not so much with pop+rock etc.
Actually I was listening to Indian music with a lot of vocals. As the above poster said the difference is more apperant musical with a lot of vocals.

All,
I have an HTC Desire, and I don't like the standard wired headphones that come with it. I find them uncomfortable at best. It also provides no volume control. Coming from the iPhone world myself, I am a bit disappointed...
I've searched for alternatives, but after reading every thread on this forum or AndroidForums on this topic, it appears clear that:
1. There is no wired headphones with 3.5mm jack that will allow pause/play/next/prev/vol-up/vol-down/answer-call functionality on HTC Android or Android in general. Not a single one!
2. There is no wired headphones with 3.5mm jack that will allow pause/play/next/prev/answer-call functionality on HTC Android or Android in general, apart from the original HTC ones, which I don't like. Not a single alternative! (Compare that to Apple's numerous alternatives...)
3. The iPhone compatible headphones or headsets are not compatible with Android, apart from play/pause and sometimes next functions.
4. Bluetooth headsets can be used as an alternative, but are not ideal due to non-optimal sound quality, drops, interference and battery drain. Not an option for me.
Very very disappointing :-(
Given that the iPhone-compatible headsets and the original HTC remote have the exact same standard 3.5 mm connector, I'm wondering why no-one's built an application for the Android that would effectively make the iPhone headsets compatible.
Does anyone know why that woudn't be possible?
Is someone up to the challenge? (unfortunately I'm not much of a programmer myself)
I am also wondering about this issue. I am coming from an iPhone and want to use the volume controls on my Android phone.
If you want to use the IPhone headphones go back to your precious iPhone, are you too lazy to use the on screen controls? This has nothing to do my "precious iphone", I've never even owned one. No need to be nasty and I'm really tired of all this attitude for or against iphones. Just a bunch of snobbery either way. I tried an iphone. Though I prefer to be using android I think the apple os is more slick and polished.
I would like this too. Nothin to do with the iPhone itself. Great headphones.

You can't flame someone and then defend yourself by saying you aren't.
It's a feature I too would love. I don't know if there is a universal specification or if the Apple implementation is entirely proprietary. I know the hardware on most Android phones supports it.
I'm a musician/studio engineer, and I've stayed with Android and Symbian before that.
I constantly get iphones stuck up my nose doing fantastic audio stuff from people I meet, and as I'm never conforming to reverend Jobs church I do get a little urged for revenge.
Now, I'm sitting with a wildfire, and I do know it's very limited, but I also mess with a LG GT540 for some, but small comparison. Both these aro no competitors in audio, but still testing stuff to se what they really can do.
What bugs me most about the market, is that most of the audioapps are really bad. If it isn't an 8-bit whizzing all over the thing it's poor handling and huge latency. (Latency/Lagging is VERY uninspiring!)
Will all this go away if I find myself a proper device like the Sensation or the Incredible S?
Wishlist/QuestionsAnd I do know my two toys can't do this by hardware)
1. I'd like to pick an instrument-app, and it will play as i press, not a random 100-1000 ms later...
2. It would be nice to record internal stereo audio, and phonecalls too.
3. Line IN - can Android do that at all or is it HW limits?
4. Anyone developing anything in the MIDI-department?
5. How about beatmixing two songs?
6. Full duplex for mixing mutliple tracks, and recording mutliple tracks simultaneously is hardware dependant?
Bottom line is: Will Android ever beat IOS in pro-audio?
Totally with you on that. I'm a guitarist and I would love to have something like "amplitube" on my phone.
And I even read that Google had introduced some native audio enhancements in gingerbread, so we might just get some apps.

I have background in audio engineering and this is something that annoys me too.
The thing with the apple devices is that the developers know exactly what HW they are dealing with. There's too much fragmentation with android.
That said, newer dual core devices may lead to some more improved software.
Lets hope so anyway.....

the only problems i have with the music player on this phone has to do with a stock ROM issue causing the sound drivers to not work properly after leaving the phone on for 12+ hrs. a reboot fixes but pain in the ass
Speakers do blow also... Your speaker could be blown. Mine was, it didn't crackle or anything but it only worked at half the volume it should have... It just randomly happened.
Best music player, eh? If you're talking about playing music through the speaker on the player, then absolutely not. It's just good enough to use as a speaker phone, but sound quality through the Galaxy S's speaker is about as weak as you'd expect, meaning no bass to speak of and very little in the way of clarity.
Now if you're talking about as a music player more as an iPod replacement AKA using it with headphones, then I'd say the Galaxy S has the best sound of any system I've used as long as you use decent headphones or IEMs. For instance, if you go the Skullcandy or Jbuds route, the Galaxy S performs about as well as any other music player.
However, if you do some research and pick out a nice set of sub-$100 IEMs, like the MEElectronics M9 series ($13 to $20), MEElectronics M6 ($20 to $30), Brainwavz M1 ($35 to $46), NuForce NE-700X ($60 to $75), or my personal favorite MEElectronics A151 ($50 to $75)? Well, then the Galaxy S will send out clear, unadultered sound that a quality pair of IEMs can turn into jaw-droppingly beautiful music.
Of course, you'll need to do your research, test out different IEMs, and most importantly, find a perfect set of tips that give you the best seal (poor seal = tiny sound and weak bass). You'll also want the latest Voodoo, but use as little processing as possible. No more than the Voodoo AMP if possible.
No, I'm not an audiophile. I just play one on the internetz.

the only problems i have with the music player on this phone has to do with a stock ROM issue causing the sound drivers to not work properly after leaving the phone on for 12+ hrs. a reboot fixes but pain in the ass
