[Q] Should I go for a Moto Defy+? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I was looking for a rugged phone and planning to go for a Defy+. It should also be able to play games like Nova 3, NFS etc.
Am planning to load CM 10 once I get it. Have a few doubts. Sorry for the noob questions.
1) Is it an outdated phone compared to the dual core phones now? Or, after applying CM10 I will still be able to play games like Nova 3, NFS without lag (Currently have a sidekick and it plays only Nova 2).
2) Will it be worth all the trouble getting this rugged phone which was released 2 years ago? (I saw youtube videos where the defy+ screen glass was broken)
Thanks in advance!

There are better phones out there now. It is pretty outdated and NFS struggles to run while NOVA 3 is just about playable. I suggest going for another phone.

Thanks for the tip hotdog125!
Nova 3 not working well is a disappointment. But at least if Nova 2 works then I'd be happy.
If ruggedness and battery backup is the main criteria and then comes games, would you still suggest the Defy+?

If budget is not a problem I suggest Xperia Z or Galaxy S4 Active, there's no point buying a Defy+ now. I can't suggest any other rugged phones if you are budget concious.

Thanks. Hate Sony mobiles. S4 Active is expensive and getting returned by users too.
So I'll check out some non-rugged phones then.

If you are looking for midrange phones, LG L9, Galaxy S2, Note, HTC One S are great phones.

If you are looking to use CM10 then you might find it a bit slow with games you are looking for. You might also want to think about CM7. I have recently switched from CM10 to CM7 and I have to say that it performs incredibly well with long battery life to boot.
I also love the ruggedness of the phone, which I have dropped onto concrete on many occasions without a scratch!
All the best with your decision.

[Q] Experiences with GNote coming from GNexus?

Hi Guys, I just bought a Galaxy Note (yay!)...I should have it by Friday. The reason for getting the Note was that my Galaxy Nexus presented signal drops and I had to keep it stock if I wanted solid signal, and well with the Nexus what's the point on having it stock?
Now I absolutely LOVE the Galaxy Nexus, it's the best phone I've had by far...and to tell you the truth I am a little sad to let it go, I love the fact that you can do almost whatever you want with it, it's easy to root, and to mod. I've read that there are some troubles flashing custom ROMs on the Note, but I'm pretty sure that I'll figure it out once I have the Note in my hand, or hands really.
So I wanted to know about experiences of you guys that made the switch from the Galaxy Nexus to the Galaxy Note, are you happy with it? do you miss stock ICS? How do you like Touchwiz?
Thanks!
i have both. i found samsung's gingerbread/touchwiz overlay intolerable so i barely used it for the firsy couple of months. was using the Gnex heavily. i couldn't bring myself to sell the Note becase of the magnificent screen, battery and camera - it had potential beyond each and every phone in the market combined.
Then along came CM9 for the Note and now i can't put it down. It's now has the best of everything - screen, battery life camera - and nothing in the market can come close to offering what it does. the overall experience with the screen really is on another level entirely.
The Gnex is going to be sold soon. The phone was good but the battery was an absoute joke. The Note (now with CM9) betters it in every possible way.
Omersak, can i ask you which Cyanogen ROM you are using, i can find a few in the development section.
And what is the + over an APK ROM ?
@TS
I have my note a few days now, i was doubting between nexus and note, the nexus looks amazing, but it has older and slower hardware.
The Note have great hardware, great screen, and the size is just perfect.
I rooted the Note the second day (reading the forums here all day does strange things with a man )
Um do you mean AOKP?
It stands for Android Open Kang Project

I can't explain it myself but found that link.

LOL.... I was going to say I rooted mine on Day 1 within the first few minutes, but after reading your post I'll keep my mouth shut...
Re the OT's question:
I was using the Nexus 1 for almost 2 years, and jumped on the G Nexus first moment it came out. Loved it! Reading my Kindle books was now such an enjoyable experience with the 4.65" screen. Then I started becoming greedy. Why not an EVEN BIGGER screen?
After only about a week, I made up my mind to move to the Note (after many many pocketability tests in the store), and I've been in seventh heaven ever since. What I love about the Note:
- bigger screen (doh...)
- Removable SD!! This was a biggie - having a 32Gb SD card in addition to the 16Gb on board is FREEDOM! Very good for storing all those huge Nandroid backups!!!
- better battery life
- faster (sure, many ppl are skeptical about benchmarks, but 4700+ on Quadrant?!! )
I missed ICS initially, but Gingerbread (with CheckROM and Franco kernel) has been working tremendously well for me, and better (smoother and better battery) than all the ICS ROMs I had tried, including the stock rom that just came out.
Rocket ICS looks promising though, so just waiting for v2 before giving it another go.
Enjoy your Note - you'll never look back, for sure!

[Q]Should i Buy a Glaxy Tab 2?

Well I recently got a Pantech burst, hence my name. But now im looking for a tablet for personal use and school. Im also interested in the ASUS Eee pad and the nexus 7. Any tips on what to get/reasons to get the tab 2?
I have an gtab 2 10.1 and i have to say that its amazing. Its smooth, has a nice display, good music boxes for a tablet and the battery life is awesome. ( 28 h with intensive use of wifi games and some youtube vids.)
The only thing thats bad about this tablet is the camera, but i think... ITS A TABLET! NOT A CANON EOS!
A little pro for you is the support of the users here in xda

Be cautious when considering the Asus. I bought a new Transformer Prime 64GB, mainly because it seemed to be rated high and was cutting edge. It never worked right. Twice I had to send it to Texas for "repair", the first time when it was only a few days old. Asus has them locked and the unlocking app doesn't work for many, so there's no way to load CWM or a custom ROM. While just under the return window I sent mine back to Amazon for a refund and ordered the 10.1 Tab 2. It may not be cutting edge, but Samsung stuff is solid and there's a lot of support. You might also want to spend some time reading the threads here on XDA about the Asus before you decide. I wish I did. Just my two cents!
I had the 8gb nexus 7 and loved it but not enough storage for me. I have the Gtab 2 7.0 with a 32gb SD card and am very happy with my purchase. If storage isn't an issue for you I would go with the nexus 7.

as much as I like my tab 2, for most folk the 16gb nexus 7 is the better purchase.

Agreed. I've gone through a couple phases with my Tab 2 7" thus far. I was initially a bit disappointed in it as the screen and performance weren't quite as crisp as my Galaxy S2 phone. But after more day-to-day use and comparing it with the hacked Nook Color I'd been using previously it's really started to grow on me and I quite like it now, especially given the price. But if I had to buy new right now I'd probably opt for a 16GB Nexus 7. The extra space provided by an external storage card on my Tab is largely useless as far as most apps are concerned.

I got the Tab2 because it shipped with ICS, has a back camera and expandable storage. No regrets. I am not in the US so I wouldn't have been able to access all the Google services. Tab2 was a bit less ($10) than the Nexus for me.
You should search. You would see the other five threads asking the same question.
No, don't buy one. Get an ipad.

Ha good one. Like I would spend my money on an apple product. Also the nexus tablet is like Two weeks? Two days old. I doubt someone compared it to this but thanks for the negativity downer Dan!
I am very happy with my Tab 2, but in the end I think the i-pad is the better choice: many more tablet apps available.

Like scottx said buy an IPad so you can support sue happy Apple. They need more money so they can block or delay us in getting new non-apple products.
Seriously, I would do a lot of research and find local stores that have various ones on display and take some time to play with them. This is a big purchase for some of us. I kind of rushed into it and am not sure I made the best decision even though I am happy with my Tab 2. I had a Toshiba Excite 10 and it was great also with the exception that there is still not a lot of developers making apps that are compatible or support the Tegra 3 processor. And the fact that there was a glitch in the camera (which is better than the Tab 2) that caused some issues.
Good luck in you search and decision.
Whatever you do.. get something over 8GB ,,,,,,

Sure
I'd owned iPad 2 about a year but traded it for Galaxy Tab 2 (5100) so I have experience for both devices.
iPad is absolutely unusable without JailBreak. And you can not guarantee some smart guy will make a jailbreak for new iOs version.
But it is smooth and handy and sweet and yummy. And all girls are yours (if you own Ferrari as well).
SGT2 is scarcely usable with stock Samsung rom. It's sluggish and it lives its own life and doesn't care what exactly you want to get by poking your finger into the screen. Sometimes it may make an exception and mercifully respond to your wishes. May be such an impression comes after iPad since raw android users don't experience anything like that.
Yesterday with help of comrade Endoroid I managed to flash CyanogenMod 9 to my SGT2. And you know what - it is smooth almost like iPad now but you haven't to perform all those Voodoo dance to just put a file on it. So now I have all the mighty might of android swiss knife and smoothness of near of such of Ipad.
As a summary - I would recommend you this device if you can handle flashing a custom rom and don't bother about warranty.
Make your choice (c) John Kramer.
Got my GTab 2 since yesterday. It ran only 1 minute stock (to copy CM9 and gapps on flash) . Now I'm running CM 9 RC2 - CM10 4.1 is in progress by codeworkx. It's so smooth :fingers-crossed: ! Love it! Only thing is, that dock features like audio/hdmi over dock connector aren't supported yet.
I've read in many threads that the build quality of the Nexus 7 is not very good. Asus tried to build it so that it would be easy to tear down and replace parts, and in order to do that, they did not use any glue to hold in the screen. This may been nice for the repair department, but it sucks for the average user constantly getting a loose screen (eventually causing damage to the screen).
Thanks guys, im pretty sure im going to get the tab, and whats this about the nexus 7's screen coming loose. Any links to that??

The problem is that there is no glue.
Check out this video on the teardown.
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-7-Teardown/9623/1
Hmm.. and one more thing. It looks like the screen has yet another problem with "ghosting" images.
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-7-ghosting-issues-affect-some-displays-99349/
Oh and also it seems that Tegra 3 chips have a severe "flickering" problem with the display.
Gee.. that is like 3 separate problems directly related to the screen
There is a hardware problem that affects the flickering in the display. When the brightness level is turned down, the IPS panel is affected when the broadcom WiFi chip receives data. So, if you want to use the internet and turn down the brightness, you will get (from what other people say) severe flickering on the screen. Sounds annoying.
I got myself the galaxy tab 2 and overall well i will say for stock rom it does ok if you are doing light work (surfing, and music) although you do see the screen or tapping of screen lag when you are running more things. However overall rather stable for android os 4.0.3. i think there is an update to 4.0.4 but i guess i will stick with 4.0.3 a while longer before moving on to custom roms.

NO! Don't buy Galaxy Tab 2, I suggest you to buy an Asus Transformer Pad than Gtab 2 because some reasons:
1. It's cheaper
2. It's using NVIDIA Tegra 2 GPU (Transformer) which run graphics very smoothly than Gtab 2 which only powered by PowerVR
3. Asus Transformer's dock is very usable, your tab can transformed into a netbook
4. The dock could extend the battery of the tab up to 6-10 hours as I know
5. The widget and live wallpaper is pretty cool and awesome B)
6. Asus built in apps is very usable too
And the last...
7. It's have good specs for gaming
But I just suggest you and you've still consider which is the best for you

You should install this rom,if you like stock roms. Very nice indeed. Remove the bloatware, install some sort of app that stop apps from starting on their own, and you will see a nice improvement.

Very close to buying

Really close to going for this as my next handset but have a few questions.
I currently have an S2 and use Apex launcher instead of touchwiz. If i chose to use Apex instead of touchwiz would i lose any of the features such as the s pen and air view?
Thanks Neil
I use Apex and all is well.

You won't lose any features because of Apex.
Flashing CM will make you lose custom features.
TLDR; No, all is fine.
I use Nova luncher and all the features are working very well,i think it's the same with Apex
So i could use it pretty much the same. Why should i choose it over the G2 or the upcoming nexus 5? Camera isn't the best apparently
Thanks Neil

I might buy the Note 3 soon too. My problem with the G2 is that LG doesn't update its smartphones. The Nexus 5 might be difficult to buy when it launches (remember the nexus 4?) as far as I'm concerned I want a big screen, I don't like a ppi too high, and I want to doodle with the s-pen (as I used to with my note 1)

Lg phones drop in value like a stone too which also puts me off. I also thought the same about availability of the Nexus 5.
I suppose it's not knowing what the Nexus is definitely like is putting me off getting the note. Never used a note either. Some decent deals out there for it right now.
I can get it for £36 a month on an 18 month contract with no upfront cost.
Camera isn't the best but its also far from the worst. It struggles a bit in low light but otherwise produces some great results.

Get a cheap as chips nexus 4 as your work/professional phone and a note 3 on contract as your social phone, best of both worlds without breaking the bank always have the uptodate android for as long as n4 is supported, probably at least another 2 years judging by its spec and that 4.4 reduces resource consumption, and you have all the utilities and power of a note 3 that should get 2 or 3 years worth of slower updates too and won't be outdated by anything that has a rigid glass screen judging by how mobile tech is moving forward.
Hope this advice helps

The additional features are not part of Touchwiz, they are a separate overlay on top of the launcher. Even if you remove Touchwiz completely, they remain untouched and functional.
I use Apex, too. Works perfectly. (Nova apparently crashes for people, have noticed no such thing on Apex.)

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (N9005) :after you bought it, you recommend it?

Hi buddies, I am searching for a good, big, and fluid phone to use and I was looking for the Note 3 (Snapdragon version).
I choose Note 3 between the Xperia Z Ultra and Note 3, because it has removable battery. :victory: But I have some questions:
Can you tell me all the bugs (hardware/software) you found on this phone? Bugs like heating, touchscreen problems.
Can you tell me your user experience with it?
Anyone has tried the PPSSPP emulator on Note 3? I want to know it`s performance (I imagine that is very high and fast :highfive
Do you consider the 5.7 inch screen enough, big, or perfect? I like big screen phones, when I saw the Xperia Z Ultra I was impressioned, but unfortunately I didn`t see the Note 3 yet My use is to games, Internet navigation, videos, music.
Anyone has tried a extended battery? Tell me your experience with it. :fingers-crossed:
How is the USB OTG funcionality? I guess it is so good :victory:
And the last one: How is the phisical resistance on this phone (fall resistance, scratch)?
Do you recommend the Note 3? I am a totally newbie in Samsung world.
Thanks in advance, good night.

Bugs - Have a read through all the Note 3 threads, theres some bugs, but there's always bugs!
My user experience with it so far is mixed, had a few headaches at teh start with crashing software but it seems OK now.
Haven't teied PPSSPP on it yet, on my to-do list tho!
5.7 inch screen is ideal, as is the size of the phone itself.
No real need for extended battery as you can pull upto 30 hours + out of it on moderate to heavy use.
USB OTG works
Physically it'll break if you drop it from a decent height, all phones will. It feels sturdy... Only feels! whether it proves sturdy is a different matter.
Yes, I would recommend it.

Switching From note 4 to OP2

i'm considering switching from my note 4 to the OP2 what are your recommendations ? can i have user reviews about battery and overheating issues (if there's any) ?
I've only had the device for a day and I played a few games and there was no overheating. A little lag in the game but not much. Battery is better than the Note 4. That is for sure! I've owned the Note 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The OPT does have better battery life than the Note 4 and 5. If i remember right the Note 2 and 3 had amazing battery life.
I will also say this. The Note 5 is faster than the OPT and the camera is better and so is the fingerprint reader software. I hate touchwiz and I mean I really hate it. I said NO MORE SAMSUNGS after the Note 4 but I had to get on Tmobile's Jump plan so I got a Note 5 and I'm impressed with the SW now. Still not stuck but not horrible anymore.
I hope someone answers you but man you have got a lot of reading to do. Same boat as u. torn between op2 and moto. Best of luck.
Interesting
Well, i will be giving a neutral answer.
1. If you owned a note 4(which u already are), dont waste your money and give that OPT invite to others(if you have one)
2. Regarding your question about overheating issue and battery life, i assure you(well unless you get your hand-on an oxygenOS 2.0.0) there is no overheating issue at all(except you play a 3D HD game like implosion for 1hour+ which temperature will be at 48°c). For battery life, i get a decent SOT of 3h45min ~4h30min for average usage such as facebook, watching youtube, spotify, and waze with some occasion wifi hotspot.

Thank you for the answer.
i also had note 1,2,mega,s4,s5, note3,4, and NOT planing to go on note 5 cuz i hate tw and got bored of it so after sammy removed removable battery and extended storage i also said byebye samsung after the note 4. Might as well get something new and different. The HTC m9+ is way out of my budget. And since i saw the OPT i fell in love for it but i had few doubts about the sd810.
thank you alot your answer helped me very much

If you haven't played with the S6 or Note 5. You should. You might be a little surprised by TW now. I guess it's the theming engine coupled with the speed. Check it out on a friends phone if you can. Not at the store.

I dont really know very much about oxygen os lol but im glad to hear that no overheating issues, as for gaming i dont spend more than 10-15 minutes on a game, mostly fb, instagram, calling, whatsapp.......
and as for the invite i dont have one but there is a merchant in my country getting some so im gonna buy from him the 4gb ram 64gb model,
and mate i simply got bored of same tw over and over if there was a cm rom for my varient i wouldnt consider changing my phone.
if you have anyother comments and some things to tell me about the OPT please do as my decision is almost made
Thanks alot for replying

I guess so. The new moto pure has a terrible battery life from what I read so. Although I will miss the touch less control of the x. I want something that can go well for at least a day and somewhat endure for a couple of years. Although the nexus 6 is quite large. Guess it is op2 then. Will get it through oppomart I guess
This is my recent history.
OnePlus One 1 month.
OnePlus Two 2 weeks.
Both OPO & OPT running hot (OPO is hottest).
OPT is equipped with a better battery, and stand-out from the affordable crowd. The thing is, why you want to switch from Note 4? Any particular reason? I guess the Note 4 has all the features one would want. The 16GB version of OPT is way cheaper than Note 5 ot Edge 6. The choise is yours

Do not trust Oppomart.
I buy two time from oppomart first time they sent me a new phone, second time a used phone, I sent back and they stole me 400 euro on refound.
“I’m sorry the packet arrived empty are you sure you put the phone inside?”
Come on!
I buy from aliexpress and pandawill, it never happen something like this.
To be honest with you, the OPT is not ready yet! but dont get me wrong is a good thing,i got it 2 weeks ago,bit laggy, some bugs and some heat on stock Oxygen 2.02.
But here is the thing! If you using AK kernel you get a different phone! no heating anymore, decent battery life much snappier UI,an He is still in beta stage!
Thats why I love OP, couse you dont get the best of everything out the box, you have to "treat" it to make better for you.
Thats why you can see lots of bad reviews, and they right, you can buy an apple which out the box, everything is smooth and working, but please ,its too boring for us "modders".
If you dont mind to digging forums for make the phone better step by step, and trying different kernels, roms every week than go for it, if you wanna settle with something which is settled, than buy samsung or moto.
Never settle!
