Need some opinions

I am looking to buy a Galaxy Tab 2. I had the Nook Tablet and loved the size but wanted a tablet that was an actual tablet. I ended up buying the new ipad but things were tight and ended up having to sell it.
I want another tablet and love the size, speed, and battery life.I was playing with it at Best Buy and noticed that you can only use the entire screen in landscape mode. Are there any custom roms that fix this. Also, is everyone pretty happy with your GT2? I have an iphone and I love it. But I miss having an android device that I can customize and mess with. Just wanna make sure this is the right one. I think for the price, you can't miss!

I love mine. Right now I am using the new 10.1 right now. I started with the 7in thinking I wouldn't want it to big. I then went to the 8.9 and yet again wanted bigger one. Plus it was nice the tab 2 10.1 came out as the same price as the 8.9. I bought mine at micro center; they had it for $249 which is 50 cheaper than best buy. Anyway yes Samsung pretty much owns the market. I loved all my galaxy tablets. Hope this helps and good luck.

I am loving my Tab 2 7.0. In fact, I have purchased several Android tablets looking for that right one, and I think I have deduced that none are really iPad killers, but the Tab 2 7.0 comes as close to being the ideal Android Tablet there is. I like it so much that I will more than likely sell my Xoom Wifi, and perhaps Transformer Prime and pick up the Tab 2 10.1.
PROS: size and feel, battery life it great (I charge about every other day with moderate us - now if you streamed video constantly, I would say you would charge every day). Speed is very nice. Browsing with no lag - very zippy. GPS works great. I have a 7" car mount and use it for Navigation and it works great. Good sound from the dual speakers (at least for this size of tablet). Screen is sharp. It has a power saving mode available in the settings that may extend your battery life a bit.
CONS: Of course, Touchwiz, but it sounds like you would customize, anyway. I just put Apex Launcher on it for now (I have no plans to root it and flash custom ROM at this time). The automatic brightness setting is almost always too dim for my tastes. This sounds wierd, but it is the hardest tablet to clean that I own - the screen is very "slimy" for lack of a better term. I can take microfiber cloths to any of my other tablets, and will little effort have them mirror shined, but it takes work on the Tab 2 7.0 - everything just smears really bad. Never experienced this before with a tablet. The last con is the backing - though it looks cool, the plastic is hard and slick - prone to scratches and dropping as it can slide out of your hands.
You have another option in the Kindle Fire. Head over to the Kindle Fire Development thread and check out some of the wonderful ROMS available there - I use GedeROM 1.55. If times are tight, you can pick up a Fire for next to nothing, root it and have a nearly pure ICS experience on it. I actually like the Fire's form factor better than the Tab 2 7.0. Cons of course are no Bluetooth, GPS, or Camera - which may be a killer for most. I would consider it the ultimate secondary cheap tablet to play with.

You may want to look at the Asus Prime line or the Acer Iconia Line. The development section on the Tab 2 is pitiful. There are only 2 ROMs available. Acer is about to release their A700 which will make the Tab 2 look like a toy. And the Asus line is really starting to get interesting. I bought the Tab 2 for my son, bought the 7" from Costco and when I got home it was the 10.1 inch. So I'll keep it but until the development increases for this tablet you may want to look elsewhere.

I suggest that the OP heads over to the Prime XDA forums before investing into any Asus tablet. Six months with mine has been nothing but disappointments. I simply cannot and will not recommend Asus to anyone. Any correspondence with them is further reason to avoid. They are going to have to have English based support to penetrate the US market further. If not phone, then at least someone to translate their support site and email correspondence for them. I recently had an owner survey from them and it was embarrassing.
Again, it is up to the OP to research, however and determine their own view.

thanks for your help! I got my Tab 2 and I am loving it. I am trying out different ROMS and loving the apex launcher. What ROM are you guys using?

I have been using the tab2 lite rom/kernel.I tried all the others and just think it is great.I have it oc'd to 1.35 and the tab is so fast.Its not that I dont like the other roms they are great and I appreciate everything everyones doing for tab2...just think I will run this rom till something better comes along.....MIUI maybe?

I use setcpu to over clock all of my devices. The app is cheap but in actuality is very polished and does its job well.
I also removed both for my own reasons (I like a very simplistic look). I would recommend finding the ROM you like, and backing it up and then trying a bunch of different mods.

I'll probably end up returning my tab to Costco and getting this. Maybe I have a lemon, but the screen's touch response has been pretty frustrating and I'd rather just not deal with it anymore.

Just looking at the specs i think it will be a good deal, BUT some bad things in my opinion are:
Nvidia..
Resolution, i own the 7" with 1024x600 and all the web sites fits perfectly on the screen when in landscape mode, with 1280 you will have some extra empty borders making the fonts somewhat smaller without any browser tricks, higher resolution to me is equals to more detailed but smaller things
Hope it haves gps...
This is not confirmed but it seems it will be asus, after reading some feedback about them i dont think they are a good choice
In my opinion the better things are:
Jelly bean
Nexus, it will have a lot of dev and google support
A quadcore, i think i dont need it since i rarely play games on my tablet.
Nfc, i dont have any use for it but someone will...
Im not talking about battery life because we all know all manufacturers lie.
I will look closer at the nexus 7 forums, and maybe i will sell my tab and get it but i dont think so

I was kind of disappointed when hearing this, but I have really gotten over it. To fit those specs into that price range they are going to have to skimp on a lot of other stuff. Also, the Quad core won't do much as Android doesn't really use all 4 cores unless you are doing benchmarks or playing one of Nvidia's games.
The only real advantage that has is the screen, but who know's the quality of the screen, also for a 7" tablet I would rather have the lower resolution.
The only thing I really see for this tablet is the dev support, which after getting a fully functional CM9 port, I don't really care too much as that is probably the only thing I would run on it anyways.
Finally, I just came from an Asus tablet and while I loved the thing it did have a good bit of flaws and a lot of angry customers. My ASUS laptop works great but I guess that doesn't carry over to their tablet division.

Keep in mind that this is an Asus built unit - don't get too excited. My Tab 2 7.0 browses better than my Prime.
Google is going to regret the day they partnered with Asus... Check back in about 4 months...

Count me as one of those "angry" former Asus customers. Two laptops and one
tablet, all gave me nothing but headaches.... I am a very understanding person
and I know electronics can have defects. However, Asus was absolutely terrible
when I tried to get the products fixed under warranty. It was a painful and slow
process. Not to mention that their customer service reps seemed to trained to
ask 20 questions and expect detailed answers before approving a warranty
repair request.

I thing I'm curious about is whether or not it will have the ability to use external SD cards. Since this is a reference device, and if you look at the Nexus phones they don't support them either.
Since my Tab is now my primary travel companion for long international trips for movies - that's a huge negative in my book.

I see the pros being the display, price, and development support. Outside of that, the rest of the specs seem in line with the Tab 2. Who is going to use NFC and Google Wallet from a tablet? Unless Google Wallet becomes more like Passbook, it's going to be useless as I would think you would need an internet connection, and how awkward would it be paying with a 7" tablet?
The CPU could be a plus for them, but it may also affect battery life having more cores. The Tegra 3 looks like a fairly solid SoC, but as others said, quad-core isn't going to do much for a while, if ever, as most stuff that would tax the system will have stuff offloaded to the GPU as you are likely gaming. The lack of a rear camera isn't huge IMO, as I never use the cameras on my tablet now.
Cons I see are the low price point as well. It's great to have a cheap tablet, but what did they cut back on to get it cheap? I also see no mention of GPS, WiFi, or Bluetooth, so who knows what it has there. I think that the Galaxy Tab 2 having hardware very similar to the Galaxy Nexus is a benefit to us, as we can more easily get AOSP working that way. It will have problems, as the builds do now, but until more details of the Nexus Tablet are released, I still think the GTab2 is a great device.

I sincerely hope Google won't make the same mistake twice. (first one was
when it left out a microSD slot in my Galaxy Nexus phone) A tablet without
microSD slot is about as useful as a paperweight... or I can just get a KF.

Haha no doubt. I had a kf for a few days and hated not having a slot.
The galaxy nexus doesn't have one? Wtf? Really?
I doubt it has GPS. It doesn't even have a rear camera.

I've had my Galaxy Nexus since December. The #1 thing that I hated
was the lack of SD slot. (otherwise, it was a cool phone)

I just got my gtab 7 today. Its great! Was thinking if the asus,but i love my tab with ir blaster. Glad with my choice.

This will be the differentiator for me. If the Nexus 7 doesn't have an SD slot then I'll get the Galaxy Tab 2. No SD card is just unacceptable.

I think our GT2 will kick that Asus Tablet's ass.

+1. I bet for that asus to get to that price point wont have a micro sd card slot and back camera. To me the gtab is all i need, as browsing is so darn fast. I dont read ebooks, but for regular tasks this is quite fast.

I have never used the camera on my gtab, however I just can't see a tablet that doesn't have a SD slot, but if it doesn't that would be the deal breaker.
I really like my gtab, a lot more now with CM9 on it, so when the Nexus 7 hits it will be a tough decision.

I Really Hope this is a real device that will be released for that price! The issue is I will be kicking myself in the face because I just bought the Tab 2.

Honestly glad I didn't buy this tablet. It was a gift so no regrets :/ I'm happy with it regardless.

TF201 Prime with dead internal GPS out of box and shoddy Wifi/BT streaming performance.

I am coming from a B60 TF101, and fortunately managed to avoid most of the instability most users have had, because I got off of stock as soon as I got it, although it is definately less stable than other tablets I have used.

This will be my first tablet, actually

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi 16gb
I sold it to a friend for $200 to get a Nexus 7

I had the Galaxy Tab 2 7" for about 2 months, It was a good little tab, but I absolutely hated the touch wiz interface and the fact that you could not stretch wallpapers to fit the entire screen, It was also laggy when browsing the home screens and it lacked power when running the hardcore games like nova 3. The nexus will be my first pure google device so I cant wait to see what android is like without sence/touchwize/moto.

iPad 2 and Acer Iconia A100. I still have the iPad and will use it from time to time but the iconia is now gone. I didn't mind the iconia but the viewing angles and battery life were downers for me. I also didn't find the brightness high enough.

Acer a500
I have a 10 inch acer a500 .. I love my Acer.. Not totally fond of the company with there slow updates and lack of communications. They have also spent more time to prevent development on the device that could have brought quicker updates with the wasted resources. . With all that i STILL LOVE IT FULL usb support sd card Full feature tablet with one draw back.. Will not fit in my purse and the a100 is ugly. So here i am. I think with a nexus device (thou hope ASUS DONT SCREW UP THIS DEVICE). Development will be strong. the size of the tablet i think is a very sweet spot . Whooweee will fit in my purse . did i forget to mention that.
I have a WD WIFI Hard drive. just hope it will work with this tab as well as it does with my acer. 256 gb but was expensive. I work at lowes home improvement I can leave it in my locker and have access to it even all over the store. on my Huawei cell phone.

I find it very sad to retire my webOS device. I always felt like webOS had huge potential... but the lack of software options has made it difficult to stick with. Also giving my 16GB HP Pre3 the boot.

Just sold a cheap and cheerful chinese Ampe A10 (great little tablet surprisingly.. but build quality questionable) as me and other half have had Nexus 7 on preorder since 27th..
Other half always fancied the latest iPad, but we really couldnt justify cost with both having smart phones, two Pc's and a Mac in the house lol
The N7 offered great price and the many great reviews just sold us on it...

Galaxy Tab 10.1. I'm looking forward to a more portable tablet. I really did like the GT10.1, but it was a pain to lug around sometimes. Plus the lack of updates from Samsung was getting annoying. I'm hoping to get my N7 tomorrow and I'm going away on vacation on Thursday so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

+1 on this device replacing my Acer Iconia A-100 which has been my "daily" tablet for awhile now. Honestly it is a great 7" Tab and I have been running CM9 for months now with very few issues.
Other devices laying around that hardly ever get used (I prefer the 7" form factor):
Original Xoom (Ice Cream) .. Too Big
Original iPad (iOS 5) ... Still Too Big but manageable .. Not Android so pffff.

galaxy tab 7+, good little tab but the lack of proper sources from Samsung is killing it. Although today I am having buyers remorse since they just got wifi working on CM9.

I came from a rooted CM7 Nook, and a number of android phones.

I also had a Gtab 7+ 16gb wifi. Just got tired of the wait for updates on it. Was a good tablet other then that.

anyone going to switch to the newer acer devices? or the nexus 7? because tegra 3 is out and it seems very good, also might get the nexus although it would be missing external sd slot but that can be fixed if you root it, and the newer acer's seem to get hot but are getting fixed with software updates, what do you guys think? is it worth to upgrade to tegra 3? or wait for tegra 4 in 2013?

Already bought a 701. Still keeping the 501 though.
The hot processor is due to it being a high performance tablet. There's no way yet around this, but hopefully some newer updates will lower the temp down a little.
It all depends on 2 things.
a. Do you want it?
b. Do you have the cash?
If you answer yes to both, or yes to one, but unsure of the other, then go out and get it.

Well, the interface is ok. ICS. I really didn't get a good chance to play around, as it.... ahem.... bricked. (no comment, but you know me, testing a tweaked kernel. Seems the recovery author screwed the pooch on the recovery. Not only wasn;t tested because he doesn't own a 70x, but was based on the 510 recovery, which the author of course later found it, it bricks the tab when you restore Lesson learned. Well, should get it back hopefully in a week. About time I bricked a tab
I wrote an initial review in my rom thread.
Basically, the only complaint I had, was 2. Hot processor (supposedly an update has either been released, or promised by acer), and the screen sensitivity is in my opinion, not as sensitive as the 50x. Sometimes had to press a little harder. But I think both can be fixed with an update. It's a first release after all.
Overall, a good upgrade I think. But if you can get the 51x at a better price, and can sacrifice the HD display, you might be better off. But that display...... Daaaaaaamnnnnn.
EDIT. On a sidenote, the TF Prime also has Tegra3, and it also runs warmer than normal under load. And they don't have an HD Display. But if you OC the TF Prime, to 1.6 and give it a load, it runs hot. Mine, out of the box, was 1.4. Strange. But it never rebooted after 30-40 min of Shadowgun. But was pretty hot. 90c maybe. I would probably advise 30-40 min of solid HD game playing, then let it cool. It cools down really quick when you let it rest for a couple minutes.

You know, being a techie with means, in a way I am very much tempted by Tegra 3s and all the new hardware, but I stop and ask myself, why? I don't play games on my 500, and I run reflexxx, so it does everything I want it too, and smoothly.
I think for me, personally, it's less of a question of whether I have the money or the desire, and more of do I have an actual need? I mean, Chrome, Perfect Viewer, and Moon+ don't exactly need much horse power. Perhaps if I sat down with a Tegra 3 workhorse I'd think differently, but short of putting on a T3 game and saying "oooh" for five minutes, I can't see any real benefit beyond a slightly better battery life.

The on off switch on my A500 totally broke off the board so I am out of luck there. My wife's still works for her though. I'll probably go for the Nexus but I'm not happy with no SD card slot

Same thing happened to me but i soilder mine back on! WOOT WOOT

yeah the nexus doesnt have a slot but i found out that it supports otg so i can buy a 64gb flash drive for like $35 and i can have lots of movies and files right there with my nexus

I have pre ordered nexus 7. Its been getting great reviews with of course the storage negative. But for me its ok 16 gb . im not big on movies . Will pass keep my a500 for using on the couch . Went to NEXUS 7 inch because of size will fit in my purse.. I still love my a500 thou.

I think that I'll hold out until the holidays before I even think about a new tablet. By then it should be well known which ones have good dev support, lots of ROMs, etc.

I also saw that there might a kindle fire 2 in a ten inch version on Aug. 6th and the galaxy note 10.1 inch so I might wait till then and see If they start making nexus 7 in 32gb but I doubt it

I bought my a500 last December when Target had them on a fire sale. I'll probably do something similar this coming holiday season. Truth be told, I'm incredibly satisfied with my Iconia, but I'm always interested in the next best thing, and Tegra 3 has the right mix of performance and price for my income.
I won't get a Nexus 7, however. No SDcard, no HDMI, and no USB host are all deal breakers for me. The Iconia has spoiled me in this regard.

I'm thinking about getting myself a Nexus 7 to go alongside my a500. You can never have too much tech.

I have had a a500 since about July 2011. I really like it and with ICS it got even better. I replaced my rooted Nook Color with it but for reading I find the a500 to be too heavy so I picked up a Nexus 7 last week. LOVE it! Super light and great for reading on and I haven't touched my a500 since. I do really like JB and the smoothness of Tegra 3 compared to the a500. I think I will still prefer the 10 in tablet for web browsing but for $199 the N7 just can't be beat. Can't believe I was recommending the Kindle fire to friends just a month ago.

Used a nexus 7 for a few days, passed it along to my parents. No hdmi, no card slot, that's a dealbreaker. I'm waiting to see an A700 in person, but the Nexus 7 will be a tough act to follow. I'm hoping Google will follow up with a Nexus 10 that fills in the gaps of the Nexus 7.

hopped on teh nexus 7, I have been wanting a smaller tablet, plus my step dad now has the a500 which helps while he is waiting for kemo, for some reason it takes like hours just to get into treament

No more tegra for me. Im waiting for an cheapass tab with an high quality screen and a nice resolution cause thats really the only thing I need and in my eyes mather these days. Since all cpus are strong enough for most of the tasks. For example; my Desire Z with an 800 mhz cpu can play all the latest games like gta, maxpayne, dead trigger just fine. It even runs xbmc with navi-x totally smooth. I can even say it handles the most important tasks like browsing and playing video much beter than my dual core crappy tablet, especiely video decoding. I just picked up a Nexus 7 last week. Got tired of being behind for AOSP ROMs. Didn't realize about the lack of USB hosting or I might not have bought it. Having a slight screen issue so it might go back to Staples.

Returning to best buy.. want to restore stock.

Got my note and rooted it in less than 30 min and now I think I'm exchanging it for an Asus that is giving me a good deal. I noticed my firmware is li3.. I have n8013.. where can I find the Odin firmware.. I've only found the lh2.. or does it not matter? Has anyone been successful returning it back to stock with untripped counter? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

just do factory reset. they won't check it, don't worry. If you want, you can always download them at sammobile.com

So I can get a tf300 for 300 dollars right now.. do u think its a bad decision over this note.. I love everything about the note but the screen kills it.. and for 150 dollars less the Asus seems to be the better deal. Anybody want to give me some opinions on this. Still trying to make up my mind. Its really tough.

Wait, the tf300 has about the same size screen as the 10.1 (1280x800). If you want the 1920x1200 screen you need to get the tf700 infinity.

Yes it has the same but its 150 dollars back in my pocket..I'm a lil bummed that there are others tablets for the same price with much better resolution. I have a note 2.. and things look better on it than the 10.1... basically I just want some Input on whether its better to save 150 and go with Asus or stick with the 10.1..

I have the tf300 and when I got the note 10.1 it was not a contest. The note is obviously more responsive. The tf300 has a couple of good roms available and Asus is the best with updates. But I keep the note with me and the wife has the tf300. It might not be that big of an issue to you since you have note II.

The processor and ram alone makes it better then that Asus....

The note is way better than the ASUS tf300. The software and interface is better. The Note is faster and more responsive. I chose the Note over the tf700 for the same reason. I owned a Transformer tf101 for the last year and have played with the 300 and 700 extensively. Once I started playing with the Note it was over. I think the screen is quite nice, definitely better than tf101. II've only owned the Note for 2 days but I've been very impressed so far.

The note is by far the best. I had tf201 and tf700. Played with the 300 and it felt like a prime with better Wi-Fi. The note however beats them all hands down all around the block. Sure Asus updates quicker but they feel slower and stutter more. Not to mention you can kiss your warranty goodbye for Asus for custom roms.
Bottom line stick with the note.

Man my note 2 is just such a beast. You think they will give the same note 2 abilities to this bad guy note 10.

Seems to me that someone who updates continuously is doing so because there are major problems with their OS... Look at windows, updates for vista were made everyday but with windows seven there are a lot less.
Just because updates are pushed by Asus doesn't mean its a better tablet, just that it is probably buggier and they're trying to play catchup...
The Note 10.1, though not perfect, was a very stable tablet from the day I powered it up for the first time. JB may be a long time coming but at least it should be a good, stable rom that is pushed out.

Is the note really worth the $450 even if you have no plans on using the s pen.
I played with one for a couple of minutes in bestbuy on Wednesday but couldn't get over the price point especially since i don't see myself using the s pen, worse now that the tf300 is $300 for the 32gb model.
My biggest need is a really good, quick, responsive web browsing experience. It seems like the tegra 3 is not equipped to offer me what I need but im not sure if the exynos can handle it either.

I agree. But this is not why I'm considering it. Apart from the pen and touchwiz I feel like its about the same. Sure less ram but for 300 dollars it seams like a no brainer value. The note is quick I'll give it that and I'm starting to like it more and more but at times I feel like my note 2 has so much more to offer with the s pen, multiwindow jelly bean out the box. I thought the note 10 would be just as good. I can't even hover scroll with the pen like I do with the pen on the note 2.. the screen does look good but I would expect more from the price. I'll prob end up keeping this thing anyways tho.. hearing a lot of negatives about the Asus line. Even tho it seems just as good.

It really comes down to how you use your tablet IMHO. I want to use my tablet like a notebook with a pen and paper like interface, so for me the Note 10.1 was the best fit. The price difference was a factor at first when I was deciding between a tf300,tf700,nexus 10 and Note 10.1. But in the end, the most important thing for me was the user interface on how i used the device. The S-Pen and the applications like S-note, were exactly how I wanted to use a tablet device, so the price difference and even the screen resolution didn't matter nearly as much. I'd say look at how you are planning on using the device, and decide based on that first. Price is a factor but if you save 150 but don't use the device as much because you lost important features you didn't realize were important to you, then the savings weren't worth it IMHO.

I owned the tf300 for three weeks. It was purchased from BB for $269, 16G version. The tf300 was returned to BB and I pickup a note 10.1 for $459. Much more than I wanted to pay but this tablet is great.

I didn't have any problems with the bootloader unlock tool by Asus but many others did. If price is an issue then consider the nexus 10 over the tf300. Some of the issues with the tf300 have been fixed because simple tasks like downloading apps would cripple the tablet and cause the play store to force close. A few updates and a move to "Clean Rom" had everything running smooth. You wont be blown away with the note 10.1 because you have the note 2.

I have both the note 2 and the 3g note 10.1 with the jelly bean update. I love the 10.1 because it has not given me any major issues with regards to crashing etc it is super smooth with the quad core and 2gigs of Ram. Yes the display may not be as good as the newer transformers but everything else is much better in my opinion.
With the jelly bean update, it is as good as the note 2 because it contains all of its features but on a larger screen which is far more practical for professional use such as taking notes at meetings etc. The multitasking is also more meaningful on a 10.1 unless you are using the smart dock for the note 2 or connecting via an mhl cable to a larger display.
I have no regrets having both devices. If price is one of the biggest factors for you then go for the Asus otherwise stick to the note and you will not regret this decision. A number of people think initially that the pen is not going to be used that often but after putting it to practical use, they soon change their opinion about it.
I have come from the original transformer so do not notice or mind a reduction in display quality as the notes one is more than adequate and if I want true hd quality, I just connect it to a TV or projector with hd via an mhl lead or the all share cast dongle.

You get what you pay for. As someone said above, the TF300 is a de-contented Prime with better wireless which makes it over a year old both in design and components. The Note supports 5GHz dual-channel Wi-Fi with channel bonding (like the newest iPad), has BT 4.0 (the TF300 is 2.0 and the TF700 3.0), dual-channel RAM, 2GB of RAM (vs. 1GB), Glonass support for location services, two forward facing speakers, a flash for the rear camera, and a larger battery.
You specifically mentioned web browsing. All Asus tablets suffer from IO issues caused by their choice of storage solution. When there are background processes running the browser and UI can become almost unusable. There are hacks available to make things better but the device needs to be unlocked and that voids your warranty. Adding $100 for SquareTrade (unless you don't care about a warranty) puts the two devices closer in price. And multiview, even without S Pen, is a really cool feature in a 10” device.
Here's a component comparison between the TF700 (a "better" device than the TF300) and the Note. If there's a corner that can be cut, Asus will cut it. You'd be better off picking up a used Note or N10 off of eBay or CL to stay in your price range than buying a year-old new TF300.
