[Q] Is battery charging control by kernel or rom? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the battery charging rate controlled/set by the rom configuration or by the kernel?
does anyone know how to change the charging rate? I'd like to DECREASE mine..
Because when my phone is charging, the battery gets incredibly hot even the screen surface side is not comfortable to the touch (not sure if is because of the PAC rom i'm using or is something else..?)
It would be nice if i can toggle fast charge or default charging rate...
If anyone know how to change it, please let me know...

Nexus 4 Charging Rate

Hello there,
how can I measure what rate in mA my phone is charging at?
I tried apps like Android Tuner and BatteryMonitor.
The problem is I can only see the total amount going in and out at the same time. For example it says input 270mA while the screen is on, but how would I know how much it is with the screne off?
I just want to see how much current my phone is taking while charging, because lately it seems to be charging less fast than it used since I dropped it. (Might not actually be true, just how it feels to me. This might actually be placebo effect).
I know the LG charger says it outputs a maximum of 1.2A but how do I know if my device is actually pulling that 1.2A?

Bump, stille looking for an answer
time it with a stopwatch, several times, then average it out. but you wont be able to compare it with past charging cycles.

So how would I calculate average input rate?
Also is there no app that makes a graph of this ampp input Raye at any time?

I think it charges at no more than 1A.

Phone charging at 500mA

as the title says, my G2 is charging at barely 500mA. while earlier it used to do at 1600mA. Now the charging speed is painfully slow.
Using stock charger and cable, just like before.
D80220b-HKG. Total Stock. Unrooted.
any solution?

really helpful forum.
anyway i found the cause. Gsam helped a lot.
It's because of hot weather these days.
Normally battery temperature is between 30-35 °C. When i plug in to charge, it starts fine at 1600mA, but battery temperature also begins to rise and as soon as battery hits 36°C, thermal throttle kicks in and charging rate drops to 500mA to keep the temperature down.
In winter didn't have this throttling.
Also if the phone is turned off then it doesn't care about temperature and charge at full speed all the way. But when it is ON, it intelligently negotiates charging rate depending on thermal conditions.

Gsam battery monitor
i think this thermal throttle came in after recent D80220b update.
really annoying though. i have lost quick recharge capability.
any way to bypass it? 500mA is way to slow

Hi, where? in battery info?
Hidden menu, charging
So no solution guys?
If i turn it off and then plug in the charger, it charges fast like before (1% in 1 minute).
But when turned ON, it negotiate really slow charging rate and phone feels just cold from back side. When it used to charge fast, then little heat could be felt on back cover.
Right now if i want to Keep it ON and charge at full rate, i have to keep battery temperature under 35°C which can only be done if i keep it in front of AC or in refrigerator.
Gsam is just guessing the rate based o charge before and charge after.
When it is charging slow go to settings and batter and check what it's detected as charging with will say AC or USB.

my gf lg g2 doesen't charge.. 8 hours for a full charge..
i'll check for thermal issue, but why only few phones have that problem? i asked in a forum and many people with lg g2 saw that's not normal..

Turn off thermal throttling in the 'hidden menu'.
There is also a throttle for when the phone gets too cold, FYI.

Incipio battery mod overheat

Hi,
I'm currently using incipio battery mod on moto z force. it's been working fine until yesterday that it became super hot and even smell like burning. is there anyone else having this issue?
i'm kinda scare to use it now cause it might damage the phone
My mod seems to not be charging the phone, and it gets hot when I attach it not to the point of smelling burnt or anything, even though it's attached my battery percentage continues dropping, did you have the same problem?
I just got it today and haven't had any issues yet. I'll post if I do.
Btw, does anyone know exactly what efficiency mode does? All I can find is that it keeps the phones battery at 80 instead of 100. But there must be more to it?

I really think that's the extent of that mode. I'm just bummed that I can't charge the battery pack without keeping it attached to the phone.
Efficiency mode uses less power to keep it at 80 instead of 100 so the battery mod will last longer.

I enable the efficiency mode, and my phone stay at 80 thru the day. the mod charges phone at slow speed, so if you use some app that drain battery fast like pokemon go then the battery percentage still drop.

Well, you *can*, but only with a wireless charger. If you put the mod on the Qi charger, the mod will charge.
But, yeah, not being able to stick USB C cable into the mod to charge is kind of a drag. I'm getting used to it, though.

[Battery][Charging][Oreo]Goes up to 100% then discharging connected to chrager

As in the title and photo
CrDroid lastest, using original OnePlus2 charger and UTM Mod that didn't do anything, still discharging under power source
I woke up this morning to this and almost 50°C heat
Someone help, geez

First impression your charger isn't the right amperage. When I was using 2A charger wasn't getting a full charge , heated up and took a long time. Add a ROM, apps running in the background, charging mod and weak battery sounds like disaster. Looks like your phone reset also unless that was you. With the stock charger I'm getting at least 2700mA depending on how low the battery is. Could go as high as 3000mA in ampere.

Heating issue while charging ??

Anyone facing heating issue while charging with stock charger? Is it only me or anyone else facing the same ?
Temperature goes upto 45°c ..is it normal ?

i'm using the default charger (out of box, 5V 2A) on RN7 (chinese rom), battery doesnt heat up as the app (AccuBattery) saying temperature upto 36 or 37 C, once i seen shooted at 39 C (max)
but in any case phone was slightly heated on top from behind (adjacent to back camera), i think it may be due to processor but the battery temperature was fine

Battery temp depends on ambient temp too. It's about 36°c ambient here. So may be that's the reason for heating.

i think it is not normal if ambient is 36 and on charging battery temp goes upto 45, you can also check different phones with different chargers
or you can try charging your phone via laptop/PC, it will slow charge the device but you will see the temperature rise of battery be negligible
keep in mind that charger as well as charging cable both may contribute in heating up of phone
by the way which charger are you using?
just for information (not related to thread) you can visit the website regarding temperature and battery life

Thanks for Ur reply.
Yeah, for high ambient it's ok to have high temp. I thought the same.
I am using charger that came with the box.
Saw many people complaining about the same. So thought of creating this thread.

keep in mind that im using chinese rom (comes with the mobile), lucky me my mobile dont get heat up, same is the case with my friend we purchased the same RN7 chinese and both got lucky because mobile isnt heating while charging, although im thinking to purchase QC4 charger but don't know will it improves battery life (cycle) or degrade it at the cost of fast cahrging

A custom kernel could be a solution for heating, or just charge at lower amps.
Reg. Qc4 make sure u charge in an AC room ?lol

I dont think QC 4 require AC room, as my friend owns vivo v15pro with fast charging (5V, 4A). no heating issues, im concerned because RN7 is a budget phone and normally budget phones dont offer QC3 or QC4/+

Redmi note 7 is QC 4 certified by qualcomm.
See image attached.
thanks for the reply, i am still confuse because of the budget phone, i will try QC4 charger sometime later, let see what happens
