Do you think it is worth it to root the Nexus 10 and install a ROM like cyanognemod? Will rooting void my warranty? I love cyanognemod 10.1 on my HTC Vivid and I just traded in my iPad to get a Nexus 10. I don't have it yet and I'm wondering if a custom ROM is worth it. Are there any other ROMS anyone would recommend?
Any opinions?
Thanks!
Android without root is like non-alcoholic beer "what's the point" and CyanogenMod is the best thing that has happened to Android in my opinion.
Unleash your tablet is all I can recommend.

Will I lose any unique features or options if I move to CM? I don't know if there are any special apps or features loaded on the Stock N10
If you are already running 4.3 you will lose those updates that came from moving from 4.2.2, but CM has way more to offer I think and they aren't far behind with the update.

You can reflash a factory image and relock the bootloader which effectively restores your warranty. A Google device is made for messing with without voiding your warranty.

Hi everyone
Just got my nexus 4, I already rooted it and flashed custom recovery to it and updated it to 4.2.2, Now i was wondering what mods should i install and what should i tweak about it software wise. And is rooting really voids its warranty because while rooting it was said to me.

If you turn it in for repair and the bootloader is unlocked and you have custom software then yes warranty can be voided. But only if they can prove or relate the damage beeing caused by the software.

All that is based on what you prefer. Some Roms have loads of options and tweaks, while others are closer to stock. Head over to the development sections and read the first posts to see what grabs your interest.

Have you seen any posts here where someone has had their warranty voided because of custom firmware / root?
Ive not seen any.
You guys have prob seen a thread like this a million times, but I am getting my nexus 4 soon and I wasn't sure if i should root it or not. I have rooted before (droid x2, galaxy nexus, nexus 7) so I am fairly familiar with how the process works. I will not loose my updates from Google if I root and stay on stock ROM? That's what I would plan on doing anyways if I did. Thanks for the help!

Just Google some of the benefits of having root.. if any of those sound appealing to you then... root it. If not, don't. Buuuut since you've already been rooted with several devices, you should already know if you should root or not. But thanks for making a new thread for this personal decision that you've made 3 times before

In his defense this is a different devices I rooted and flashed rooms on my gs3 and gs2 but have not rooted or anything to this device but the key is yet right now haven't found a huge reason to do so this rom works perfectly for me and I get a days use out of it

I just couldn't stand it no more and rooted after 1 month. Also flashed clockworkmod.
Went to Nightly Mako.
I love the device but feel the new Clockwork mod's blobs folder, unable to access backups so easy, and the dam memory size...
I hesitate and hope Nightlies are flawless. Frankly its awesome. So are is the Stock ROM.
I just prefer CM10.1
ROOT!!
If I were to flash nexus 4 PA would I need to wipe system as well as do a factory reset in recovery? The directions just say factory reset.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You had better gain root... Gaining root denotes a gain not a loss. Unlocking the bootloader means your unbacked data would be lost. So back up data and root and enjoy. And yes you may wipe system I recommend it.

Yes.
Hi all I'm new to the forum and am seeking advice on the tab.
1. Root or not?
2. Best custom ROM?
3. Common problems with it?
I have had three of these and all came from bby and sent the 3rd one to Asus RMA and still having problems
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2
Guess most of it has already been asked around here.
Root? Sure, if you want, nothing bad about root. But be careful, without reading you can end up with a brick. So if you do it, read! Don't necessarily read all threads about people complaining about their bricked devices - scared me as far as not to root it before having nvflash (if that'll ever be available again that is...)
Custom ROM? Depends on what you like, though if you're using a dock you should stick to CleanROM. As far as I heard this is the only ROM that really supports dock.
Common problems. Well, I think there's some thread where people talk about their experience with some problems

They both grant the user root access so it's basically the same thing.

I cant stand not being rooted. I cannot unlock my bootloader. The new tool does not work as well
I HATE THE STOCK ROM,
Is there a way to have it stay on performance and not default to Balanced?????

How active is the development for this device? is it dying, or is it alive?
I am asking because I might get a Nexus 4. Any advice for a first rom, or rooting procedures?
Man I just switched from a note 2 to a nexus 4 and couldn't be happier besides the battery life. Rom development is amazing and everything is up to date with no wait . nexus is a different breed all together . you won't regret it

You don't S-OFF a Nexus device, you just unlock the bootloader with fastboot oem unlock and away you go!

The development for the Nexus 4 is highly active. It's been alive ever since the Nexus 4 came out. I don't think it'll die anytime soon. The Galaxy Nexus forum is still alive and let's not forget about the HTC Nexus One forum. LOL.

Seriously? and that means I can just flash a rom without having to fastboot flash boot images ? so basically, after root, I don't need my comp for flashing roms at all?

Unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and from there you don't need your PC at all. Nexus devices are a lot easier than any other type of phone to flash and development will be active for the next few years at the least since it's a Nexus. The biggest disadvantages of this phone (if you care about them) are the lack of removable battery, low storage, poor camera and the glass back. Other than that this phone is one of the fastest available and you won't be disappointed if those things don't matter to you.
I'm excited to say that I have finally invested in a tablet and decided to go with the Nexus 7 that I bought for a GREAT price! I am curious about rooting and s-off etc. I was curious if there was any information that I needed to be aware of in regards to not being able to root or s-off with updates. I would really like to have a smooth experience with accomplishing root on my Nexus but I know there could be some bumps in the road . Any information or links to threads etc. are much appreciated, I haven't unboxed yet just due to the fact that I want to make sure I can root it without it auto updating something.
Thanks In Advance
Very easy to root using nexus root toolkit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389107
Just be sure the toolkit updates itself to latest version.
You need to first "unlock the bootloader". I would recommend to do that in the beginning because it will wipe your device.
Personally i had best experience with stock kitkat 4.4.4 rooted and all unneccessary software disabled. I dont like volume adjustment on lollipop 5.0.2 but i always update to latest version just for fun.
Congratulations for your new tablet, it is a great device!
Thanks for the link and the info, any recommendations on roms/kernals? I'm new to the Nexus series so I am not familiar with any of the development/developers.
IMHO the best thing with Nexus is you'll always get the latest official rom. I have only used stock but feel free to experiment.
On my phone with 4.4.4 I use stock with xposed framework. Some great modules there. However i read that xposed is not yet ready for 5.0.2.

I suggest the elementalx kernel. And if you want a (improved) stock experience go for Cleanrom.
From what I remember from my HTC Wildfire days, S-OFF = Unlocking the bootloader.
If I'm wrong, can someone explain the difference
Thanks.

Can you confirm something. When did you get your Nexus 7 and from where. There have been problems with recently released Nexus 7 tabs from Groupon, Frys, and Best Buy that have made things difficult to do things like flash. There was a revision in google/asus latest batch that makes mounting any partitions/memory difficult.

Unlock is no problem, Wugs can get you there but not root. you need cf-auto root to achieve that.

Just out of curiosity, and to just make sure we are all on the same page. You got the 2013 (2nd gen) Nexus 7, correct? Being this is your first Nexus Device, and tablet if you weren't aware there is a Nexus 7 2012, and 2013.
Probably a dumb question, but don't want to link you to all these things and have you brick your Nexus because it was the wrong gen. Enjoy, thing is awesome.

I got my Nexus 7 close to two weeks ago from Wal-Mart for an AWESOME price. They had it on sale for $125 and I had to grab it, there was no way I was going to pass up on that deal. I have only flashed CleanROM on my N7 so far and I haven't had any issues. Thanks for the links!

Its been a month... So I assume you are sorted but in case you aren't... To ensure cleanest install, wipe data and cache through twrp then flash new ROM. This will delete your data so back it up first if there is anything you want on it.
If ROM is from same family.... You can try dirty flashing ( ie not wiping data ) but it may end in boot loop or force closes in apps... I always just wipe as it ensures clean install to give you best experience with the ROM.
Enjoy

Either stock/CM. I am using cm12.1 latest build on android 5.1.1 with elementalX kernel. Very smooth.
Remember:TWRP>>>>>>>CWM
