Asus Transformer Pad TF300T - Transformer TF300T General

Hi all I'm new to the forum and am seeking advice on the tab.
1. Root or not?
2. Best custom ROM?
3. Common problems with it?
I have had three of these and all came from bby and sent the 3rd one to Asus RMA and still having problems
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

Guess most of it has already been asked around here.
Root? Sure, if you want, nothing bad about root. But be careful, without reading you can end up with a brick. So if you do it, read! Don't necessarily read all threads about people complaining about their bricked devices - scared me as far as not to root it before having nvflash (if that'll ever be available again that is...)
Custom ROM? Depends on what you like, though if you're using a dock you should stick to CleanROM. As far as I heard this is the only ROM that really supports dock.
Common problems. Well, I think there's some thread where people talk about their experience with some problems

1. Definitely root
2. I like CyanogenMod or AOKP
3. I/O problems, MUST BE CAREFUL IN RECOVERY

Thanks for the replies... how close is jailbreaking and rooting?

They both grant the user root access so it's basically the same thing.

Custom Rom or nothing ! It's totally worth it.

I cant stand not being rooted. I cannot unlock my bootloader. The new tool does not work as well
I HATE THE STOCK ROM,
Is there a way to have it stay on performance and not default to Balanced?????

value of custom ROM

Hey Guys
I don't want to offend anyone especially the DEVs but I consider the N7 to be on the bleeding edge, what value does a custom ROM have. Again, I'm used to the world of the HD2 so I can honestly say I appreciate the work of every single DEV and custom ROM but I"m just a little unsure of what a custom ROM on this device brings to the table. Are there features i'm missing?
thanks all
Obviously, custom ROMs give people certain features and optimizations that aren't available in the stock ROM. But I understand where your coming from. Most people use custom ROMs on devices that don't have the latest Android version, and want the bleeding edge of software available. On the Nexus 7, and most Nexus devices, you are on the bleeding edge, and are always up to date. Until a ROM comes out with a must-have feature, stock ROM suits my needs perfectly on my Nexus.

Well the only reason I am going to root, is to be able to do a fail safe backup.
Using Clockwork mod, you get to backup everything including the way you have it set, the launcher especially.
I just root, and just use the stock rom.
And some apps require root.

Probably a dumb question but does root prevent you from getting and installing OTAs?

Gotcha. That's a bit of a bummer. So the only way to get any new features or bug fixes from the OTA is to flash a ROM that implements them?

Look into voodoo ota rootkeeper, it will restore root after an update. I've never had to use it as this is my first Nexus device, and applied all updates before rooting. Also, ROMs generally implement updates within a very short time frame so I wouldn't worry about that.

This is a nexus. If you want to remain on stock..unlock bootloader, install custom recovery, flash Su zip, flash stock recovery if you want OTAs. If an ota comes, flash it. If you lose root, it will take less than 5 mins to set up

thanks all,
i have unlocked and rooted the N7 and am not questioning the value of those 2 items...trust me that is a huge deal. But i do appreciate the comments--I didn't want to deviate from Stock if it didn't do much and it doesn't seem like any of the new ROMs have made substantial enough changes to warrant a switch.
thanks

Obviously it's not like a Verizon device that has a bunch of bloat and excess so out of the box we are looking great.
Some of the roms are and will be simply stock deodexed/zip-aligned which allow for more customization/theming etc.
Right off the bat, I'd like a stock based rom that I can easily theme that has the default Adroid browser with Flash installed. I don't care about launchers and tablet modes, etc.
The good thing is there should be a huge variety of lightly tweaked to heavily tweaked roms available eventually. If you don't need anything different, then you are good to go and will spend less time staying up late flashing your device. :good:

Root or not to Root

You guys have prob seen a thread like this a million times, but I am getting my nexus 4 soon and I wasn't sure if i should root it or not. I have rooted before (droid x2, galaxy nexus, nexus 7) so I am fairly familiar with how the process works. I will not loose my updates from Google if I root and stay on stock ROM? That's what I would plan on doing anyways if I did. Thanks for the help!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Just Google some of the benefits of having root.. if any of those sound appealing to you then... root it. If not, don't. Buuuut since you've already been rooted with several devices, you should already know if you should root or not. But thanks for making a new thread for this personal decision that you've made 3 times before

In his defense this is a different devices I rooted and flashed rooms on my gs3 and gs2 but have not rooted or anything to this device but the key is yet right now haven't found a huge reason to do so this rom works perfectly for me and I get a days use out of it

I just couldn't stand it no more and rooted after 1 month. Also flashed clockworkmod.
Went to Nightly Mako.
I love the device but feel the new Clockwork mod's blobs folder, unable to access backups so easy, and the dam memory size...
I hesitate and hope Nightlies are flawless. Frankly its awesome. So are is the Stock ROM.
I just prefer CM10.1
ROOT!!
If I were to flash nexus 4 PA would I need to wipe system as well as do a factory reset in recovery? The directions just say factory reset.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You had better gain root... Gaining root denotes a gain not a loss. Unlocking the bootloader means your unbacked data would be lost. So back up data and root and enjoy. And yes you may wipe system I recommend it.

[Q] Stock Unrooted Flashable ROM

Does anyone know of a stock flashable ROM without Root and Busybox?
I'm aware of the thread guiding people on going back to factory but I don't want to do that. I want to be able to just flash a Rooted ROM if I want one and flash back to standard unrooted if I want using TWRP.
My reason behind this that I spend a lot of time on the train at the minute so decided to get Sky Go. Unfortunately it detects that the device is rooted and won't run.
There are a few threads around the net with scripts and suggestions but nothing seems to work for me.
I don't think there are any..... Hmmm.

You can flash the stock ROM with fastboot but not from within recovery. Get it here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

If you could do that it would be great.
I was just looking at the tutorial to bake it myself but having issues with Cygwin. Much quicker and easier if you did it.
Owe you one.
I use Linux so it won't take long. You literally want a flashable stock ROM, no changes whatsoever?

Exactly. I use a standard stock rooted ROM usually.
Just realised I don't actually use root for anything at the minute but likely will do in the future.
Thanks again.
I'll try and do it this afternoon but if not this evening once back at home
Uploading at the mo, it's literally the stock ROM dumped into the kitchen and cooked out with no change whatsoever

Very cool that you've done this, but I should give a word of caution: there are some problems that wiping via fastboot will fix, but installing a flashable stock .zip won't fix. For example, when a 16GB phone thinks it's only 8GB. (I have reason to believe that there are other problems that can only be fixed in this way, but I can't prove it. :silly
That's not something the OP cared about, he just needed to 'unroot' to use a TV app that checks for root access
He should give this app a try

I tried that.
I tried a script that was published on the net to remove root and busybox.
I tried removing root and busybox manually.
I tried flashing stock kernal
I tried several other apps.
A flashable stock rom was my last resort as I was under the impression that I'd need to wipe and I didn't want to do that. I just tried it without wiping on the off chance that it worked and it did, so problem solved.
None of my Apps were using Root so I thought I'd get rid of it completely but wanted the option to flash CM10.1 once Bluetooth MAP profile is fixed and working without having to go through putting TWRP on again.
It's all in the OP and posts following that.
EddyOS saw what I was after and offered to help. He's a great dude.
Just for learning purposes, how come no one has made a flashable stock zip until now? Wouldn't it just be like any custom rom but instead its just stock?

Is there a stock ROM that doesn't take away rooting? Just got this phone yesterday from craigslist and it came rooted. Nice but want to also try out stock....

That one is rooted, the normal stock versions must root again after flashing!

[Q] Couple noob questions about CyanogenMod

1) What are the benefits of CyanogenMod over stock?
2) Is CyanogenMod rooted or do you have to root it separately?
3) Does anyone know if they implemented TextSecure in their stock messaging yet?
4) Is switching back as simple as flashing the stock rom?
Cyanogenmod is better than stock for so many reasons that I'm not going to type them all out. Google that one.
It is a rooted rom.
I have no idea. Check the changelogs at www.get.cm
Yes.
Keep in mind that Cyanogenmod is only available on a very limited number of S4's running <MF3 firmware. For the majority of users who own thus device, it's not even an option.

Just bricked sounds a little light hearted. Yes probably a paperweight. You aren't even going to get as far as putting the custom recovery on it. If you flashed in safestrap you would wind up with a black screen because no kernel support yet.

Not until hashcode can get the custom kernel hand off to work with safestrap. Then they could do something. Until then no AOSP Roms will work.
