[Q] Stock Unrooted Flashable ROM - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a stock flashable ROM without Root and Busybox?
I'm aware of the thread guiding people on going back to factory but I don't want to do that. I want to be able to just flash a Rooted ROM if I want one and flash back to standard unrooted if I want using TWRP.
My reason behind this that I spend a lot of time on the train at the minute so decided to get Sky Go. Unfortunately it detects that the device is rooted and won't run.
There are a few threads around the net with scripts and suggestions but nothing seems to work for me.

I don't think there are any..... Hmmm.

You can flash the stock ROM with fastboot but not from within recovery. Get it here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

I could make one I suppose, wouldn't take long at all...

If you could do that it would be great.
I was just looking at the tutorial to bake it myself but having issues with Cygwin. Much quicker and easier if you did it.
Owe you one.

I use Linux so it won't take long. You literally want a flashable stock ROM, no changes whatsoever?

Exactly. I use a standard stock rooted ROM usually.
Just realised I don't actually use root for anything at the minute but likely will do in the future.
Thanks again.

I'll try and do it this afternoon but if not this evening once back at home

Uploading at the mo, it's literally the stock ROM dumped into the kitchen and cooked out with no change whatsoever

Excellent. Thanks buddy.

I think I'll play with it too and keep the zip stored just so I have it.
Thanks

Here you go. I've not tested but it should be fine (let me know if it's not)

Working perfectly so far mate! Sky Go is working and no wipe was required.
Owe you one mate. Top work. Thank you.

Good to hear! You're welcome

Very cool that you've done this, but I should give a word of caution: there are some problems that wiping via fastboot will fix, but installing a flashable stock .zip won't fix. For example, when a 16GB phone thinks it's only 8GB. (I have reason to believe that there are other problems that can only be fixed in this way, but I can't prove it. :silly

That's not something the OP cared about, he just needed to 'unroot' to use a TV app that checks for root access

He should give this app a try

It doesn't work - none of the 'root hiding' apps work with Sky Go

I tried that.
I tried a script that was published on the net to remove root and busybox.
I tried removing root and busybox manually.
I tried flashing stock kernal
I tried several other apps.
A flashable stock rom was my last resort as I was under the impression that I'd need to wipe and I didn't want to do that. I just tried it without wiping on the off chance that it worked and it did, so problem solved.
None of my Apps were using Root so I thought I'd get rid of it completely but wanted the option to flash CM10.1 once Bluetooth MAP profile is fixed and working without having to go through putting TWRP on again.
It's all in the OP and posts following that.
EddyOS saw what I was after and offered to help. He's a great dude.

Just for learning purposes, how come no one has made a flashable stock zip until now? Wouldn't it just be like any custom rom but instead its just stock?

Stock Rom files Unrooted?

If this has already been answered I apologize. I am looking for the stock files to flash in Odin for the Continuum in case of disaster. I am going to root my wifes phone to remove the bloatware and if there is one thing I learned with my fascinate is those files are priceless. Anyone know where I can get the stock files to start over is I need to?

We have some odin files, but they're untested. They are also rooted :-/
If we can get someone to test our DJ20 odin files, then I'm sure someone can figure out how to remove root from them.

I got a stock ROM and kernel from imnuts; would that be the same ones you have?
I flashed that stock ROM and kernel using ODIN on my continuum (which was previously bricked by too much tinkering), and everything works on the phone except for cell data (well, I haven't tested bluetooth on it). If you have different images, I'd be happy to try them out and let you know how it goes.
I also will probably try re-flashing them again just to see if it comes out differently.

Your best bet would be FREEZING your bloatware with Titanium backup PRO to see if you encounter any negative side-effects. If so all you have to do is unfreeze. I freeze apps I don't want and after a week (after backing up) I'll go ahead and fully uninstall them. One at a time, so if **** hits the fan, you know what to restore...

What a freakin mess....

So last night I decided (against my better judgment) to install TWRP recovery and flash the OTA. I did it, then had trouble rooting it. I decided to just say screw it and then restore my Nandroid backup (which I made like a good boy). Then I got a failed message on the restore. Booted back up to a fresh boot. Brand new "please select your language" .. Wtf? So then I went back to TWRP wiped everything tried to restore again. Now... Fail. So now I can't boot up because I wiped my ROM and I'm freaking stuck all over this 4.3 update. Really?
So now I will try to wait until WUGS toolkit gets updated and see if I can use it to flash a stock 4.3 image to the device then root it. I don't know if i can even use that toolkit if I don't have a ROM on the device. Anyone had experience with such a cluster and have advice? Any thoughts on why the nandroid didn't restore?

I haven't had any trouble with the toolkits personally and Wugs kit is very nice and easy to use. This whole mess does not stem from the use of a toolkit. Really something screwed up with TWRP I just don't know what caused it.

I could tell this was going downhill after reading this first sentence. Why would you install a custom recovery in order to flash an OTA? I don't mean to offend you but you have a lot of reading to do before you continue flashing anything.
I was in the same boat and confused as hell back in my Nexus One/Galaxy Nexus days. What I've discovered after a lot of trial and error as well as A LOT of reading, is that once you become extremely familiar with using ADB and Fastboot commands you realize how unbelievably simple this stuff really is. Even soft bricks are just small hiccups that won't stress you out anymore.
Learn how to properly use ADB/Fastboot commands through terminal (in OSX) or command prompt (n Windows) and you will realize that the toolkits are silly and do exactly the same thing.
Again, I mean this in the least offensive way possible. This is coming from someone who thought he bricked his Nexus 7 and let it sit in a drawer for 5 months before finally understanding ADB/Fastboot, pulling it out of the drawer and having it back up and running within 10 minutes...

This is completely OK. Follow THIS guide (just one of many) to learn how to setup your computer for ADB/Fastboot. Then follow THIS guide to learn how to flash back to completely stock. No current ROM is required on your phone to do any of this.
I swear this is a nightmare. I don't have TBU or anything. I literally have to start over. I am always VERY careful to read and make back ups that's why I use TWRP it's why I make Nandroids and this just sucks. Ugh. I have to piss and moan I don't know where to start lol. Thanks for letting me vent..

its not that there is trouble using root toolkits(even though there is occasionally), it the fact that you dont learn to do things the right way. and when little issues come up, the knowledge isnt there to fix things yourself. and those little minor things turn into major headaches/issues.

Well I do understand that point. It's a good one. I honestly don't know how to use ADB like I should. But at the same time it's a lot easier and if used properly can prevent mistakes. And good Devs make good money in donations so everyone is happy.. Lol

[ROM][STOCK] Modded Stock ROM

Hello guys. I know people have been wanting custom ROMs for this device. I cannot give that, but I can give a modded stock ROM with Shaky156's kernel and touchscreen fix for android 4.4.2. It comes rooted, with OTA disabled(so no need to worry about receiving any updates. IF you do get OTA, let me know and I will fix it. It is a flashable zip for CWM/TWRP.
Install Instructions:
Boot into Recovery(TWRP/CWM)
Do a Factory Reset
Flash ROM
Reboot and Profit
Link:

I will try to keep this as updated as possible, may not happen but I will try.
Many thanks!

as far as i know, and that can be wrong, if your android is untouched (no root or anything else (like xposes framwork)) you will get the update over the air.
BUT if you don't there are factory images that you can download and flash your phone quite easily
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
or a toolkit to do it automatically
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
i would recommend to do it with the first method. if something goes wrong you will know what is it and you can ask for help. with the toolkit if something goes wrong things are more complicated to find the error.
P.S. if you decide installing the factory images via console (first option), it is highly recommended to read the entire process first and after do the procedure.
My phone is rooted, but i dont have any custom ROMs or framework , will this affect it? Or when I get the update my root will simply be gone?

You'll lose root and the custom recovery with the ota. But if you haven't modified / deleted any system files you should get the ota.

Alright, thank you again for clearing things up!
It's also worth noting that Google pushes update at different times depending on which area you live in, so even if you read on the news that Lollypop is released on the Nexus 4, it may take a while for your phone to receive the OTA.
Personally, I advice you to install TWRP recovery, its safe and easy to install kernels and roms

Int'l ROMs?

I found a *****en ROM named Nameless in the f/g variants of the Note 4. Was all psyched to flash it and play with it only to realize there's data issues. Is there any body who knows how to fix the data issue or maybe properly port this to our device?

T_T I'm not sure of what to search for. For branded roms it's relatively easy, but as an INT'L ROM I'm not sure if my process would work. So it's just some obscure file? I was thinking it may be because I flashed something wrong. No chance you can remember where you think you may have seen it? Like xda or another site?

I have been trying my hardest, asking on every forum i can find, to find out how to get the beta release of emotion kernel R24 for N910T. Not one single response.....but anyway. It is my understanding that the latest release of Emotion Revolution rom has r24 kernel as an option in aroma. My question is this; would it be possible to unzip the R23 kernel zip for N910T and replace only the R24 boot image from the emotion rom and leave all the other system files. Or would that be a really bad idea? Ha. I just want the kernel on Tekhds URv7. I know this is possible a really stupid question but I'm just now beginning to learn all the technical details of these things. And I will say ahead of time that any answer will be beneficial because I don't know much about how a N910T kernel differs from international as far as data is concerned or what the fix actually fixes when you flash it. But if it has any relwvance my phone is carrier unlocked and i dont even use tmobile. My goal is to learn something new everyday without hard bricking my baby like I did my N900A. I'm not by any means new to rooting but am very new to having a device that I can actually play with. Thanks in advance and us noobies appreciate everybodys patience.
