You guys have prob seen a thread like this a million times, but I am getting my nexus 4 soon and I wasn't sure if i should root it or not. I have rooted before (droid x2, galaxy nexus, nexus 7) so I am fairly familiar with how the process works. I will not loose my updates from Google if I root and stay on stock ROM? That's what I would plan on doing anyways if I did. Thanks for the help!

Just Google some of the benefits of having root.. if any of those sound appealing to you then... root it. If not, don't. Buuuut since you've already been rooted with several devices, you should already know if you should root or not. But thanks for making a new thread for this personal decision that you've made 3 times before

In his defense this is a different devices I rooted and flashed rooms on my gs3 and gs2 but have not rooted or anything to this device but the key is yet right now haven't found a huge reason to do so this rom works perfectly for me and I get a days use out of it

I just couldn't stand it no more and rooted after 1 month. Also flashed clockworkmod.
Went to Nightly Mako.
I love the device but feel the new Clockwork mod's blobs folder, unable to access backups so easy, and the dam memory size...
I hesitate and hope Nightlies are flawless. Frankly its awesome. So are is the Stock ROM.
I just prefer CM10.1
ROOT!!
If I were to flash nexus 4 PA would I need to wipe system as well as do a factory reset in recovery? The directions just say factory reset.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You had better gain root... Gaining root denotes a gain not a loss. Unlocking the bootloader means your unbacked data would be lost. So back up data and root and enjoy. And yes you may wipe system I recommend it.

Yes.
Hi all I'm new to the forum and am seeking advice on the tab.
1. Root or not?
2. Best custom ROM?
3. Common problems with it?
I have had three of these and all came from bby and sent the 3rd one to Asus RMA and still having problems
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2
Guess most of it has already been asked around here.
Root? Sure, if you want, nothing bad about root. But be careful, without reading you can end up with a brick. So if you do it, read! Don't necessarily read all threads about people complaining about their bricked devices - scared me as far as not to root it before having nvflash (if that'll ever be available again that is...)
Custom ROM? Depends on what you like, though if you're using a dock you should stick to CleanROM. As far as I heard this is the only ROM that really supports dock.
Common problems. Well, I think there's some thread where people talk about their experience with some problems

They both grant the user root access so it's basically the same thing.
Custom Rom or nothing ! It's totally worth it.

I cant stand not being rooted. I cannot unlock my bootloader. The new tool does not work as well
I HATE THE STOCK ROM,
Is there a way to have it stay on performance and not default to Balanced?????

Casual root doesn't work on this edition? Is that a touchwiz only root method or something?
So motochopper root method does not work?
Has anyone tried mobile Odin with everoot?

I thought there was a post about 4.3 from the Google Play edition already being ported to the I337?
I have SuperSU installed, I will try a root explorer to check out if it actually works.
On another note, does anyone know how to get to the app switcher? it seems to be removed from the home button.
EDIT: SuperSU does not work at all, still no way to root. I read that it was due to binaries needing to be updated for the new version.

I will check it out in a moment to confirm if that is how it is done!
EDIT: Confirmed!
I'm seeing the ROMs for the I9505, can that one be flashed or is there one specifically for I337 yet? As well, right now I have the KT-SGS4-TW Loki'd kernel with the 4.2 GE ROM on it, would I just be able to flash the 4.3 over that, or should a different kernel be used? And finally, more of a beginner question, loosing root won't mess with the custom recovery, will it? I'll still be able to access TWRP to flash something different?
The 4.3 download named "Android-4.3-I9505GUEUBMFP-Deodexed-I9505.zip" appears malicious <-- my pc says this is malicious. can anyone else confirm this is a safe download. this is from the "ATT-sgh-i337 android development" section of this forum. Thx in advance. yes I know it says "I9505GUEUBMFP". Which is why i posted what forum topic its from.

Hi all,
I've been running Omni, but I just upgraded to a nexus 5. What would be an ideal rom that doesn't need to be updated regularly and I can install franco's kernel on before giving it to her?
Thank you

I think that the best rom to give to her is stock kit-kat. The reason is that it doesn't need to be updated much and if it does it will do it automatically. Also if she has a problem she can take it to a phone shop or ask google without the rom being a problem.
Thats just my opinion though.
Yeah, what's wrong with stock?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Stock. Not rooted. Unless you live with her and are willing to deal with any issues she may have. Custom ROM's, while great, aren't always complete and are meant for those that understand that there are some "bugs". The stock ROM at least will be easy to update.
My other half has a nexus 4 as well. She is a woman so you get the idea.
She is super happy with the stock rooted jellybean. It is rooted just because I didn't want her to click on ads and buy shoes from dodgy sellers. Adaway was the solution for me.

I have a Verizon Note 3 running 4.4.2 and I'm trying to root with Kingo. I get through the process up until it checks my root status. It gets past that to 'Downloading requesite dependency files' and it instantly fails and just says Not Support. Any help?
I thought towel root was the only root method working for 4.4.2. Maybe that is why you are having issues

Thank you so much. I was able to root my phone. Lastly, one thing I've always wanted was to remove the Touchwiz and get stock Android. I am currently on 4.4.2 on my Note 3. How do I go about getting a clean version of either 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 Android? Thanks again

I'm new to the community. I don't exactly know what that is but if it is how you get Google Play Edition firmwares on your phone, than yes.
easier to do this :

you want a stock firmware file?
here you go ! http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=29319
you will have to register for firmwares,,,
unfortunately, touchwiz is the stock app for verizon stock roms... the new launchers for the S5 work on the note.. check that link in the other post
i think what you may be looking for with a rooted note 3 is a deodexed rom.. you can delete system files easily... just use "titanium Backup" its in this rom for the 4.2.2 and 4.4.2 and its easy to do if you follow this method here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
or use clockwork mods equivalent, "trebuchet"
check files , and heres CM link : https://www.clockworkmod.com/

You can't do that. We have a locked bootloader that restricts you to touchwiz roms running on the stock kernel.

you can safestrap and install custom roms - they just have to be touchwiz-based.

in the pic here, all that gobbledeegook speek where your normal "?about phone" should be , tells you this is a vzw note 3, Nc4 stock rooted, ported to T-Mobile Lte , "G" edition (S5 ported) on non-user-ship (non-stock) kernel.
or basically,
using a verizon note 3 as a T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S5, with all of its features, save the one~~ it's not waterproof. , which of course , is in that thread i linked
so there's a;lot you can do with your phone, as it may seem too complicated now, you may want to stick to simpler mods that you can download from google play store, like a different boot animation, meaning to say that instead of the huge red logo you see when you initially turn on yo0ur phone, you can change it to supermario running accross the screen, or that green matrix i/o screen. they may have added more by now, its up to you if that is something you may ne interested int there, or at least its a place to start.as you can see, perhaps a more correct assumption would be to say you cant run touchwiz and another launcher, say Google NOW...... at the same time.
Well, this was originally longer but the forum decided to post limit me because I am new. If you want a Google type experience, you might want to try the Google Experience Launcher (can be side loaded, but won't install from play store). I use this with Xgels and am very happy with the results.
