google play edition phone's Failed* - One (M7) General

*GOOGLE PLAY EDITION PHONES FAIL*
When the nexus 7 2013 was announced at the google's conference android 4.3 was introduce. Virtual surround sound, restricted profiles, trim support, open GL ES 3.0, bluetooth 4.0 was more or less under the hood features you can come to expect from it. Once Google was done glorifying it's latest tablet, i said to my self ok GEP(Google edition phones) time to see if you will receive updates in timely manner, like the nexus line. And man am i so glad i didn't spend my hard earned money on one these nexus wanna-be's. It makes absolutely no sense to spend $600+ on one of these when you can cut that price in half and get a phone with comparable specs, that receive updates when they release. There's no excuse, even the galaxy-nexus which is even older than the GEP's received the update in time. Sorry GEP owners i'd just stick with a nexus!

There's a few people complaining on Google+ as well because of lack of updates. I realize this is XDA and we always have the latest and greatest, but sometimes you just have to be happy that you have a fully functional device and enjoy life.

Id rather save my upgrade for something better. I just don't see it as much of an upgrade from my evo. It will be outdated by the end of this year, I don't care how many people make the argument of it being directly supported by google.

I'll make another argument anyway.
By the end of the year the Nexus S will be pushed the usual Q4 Android update. The EVO 3D will probably have to wait until Q2 2012 or be stuck with buggy custom ROMs.
Nexus s was made by Samsung but I am sure its by google requirements. If you compare HTC nexus 1 and Samsung nexus s,u will want nexus s.
Also there is no moto or HTC which can even come close to sgs2. They did lacked in os updates in past but it was becoz of powerful and unique hardware. You just play with super amoled screen for once you will never go back to LCD or slcd. Also sgs2 specs beats HTC sensation is every department.
HTC will another 3 phones to beat Samsung. Just like what happened when HTC released one phone every month to compete with galaxy s series still Galaxy s is most selling android phones.

I mean that's cool if it gets open source support etc wow but the hardware will be done by 2011 imo. Every rom is buggy imo because Google rolls out these new build just to damn fast. Id rather have a bug free 2.2(which we still have) then moving to another android build that's still plague with the same bugs. 2.2 is no where near perfect (sense/aosp) and they're already talking about ice cream; give me a break Google get your **** together. Not to mention 2.3 is blah, even on the nexus s. I just don't care about direct support man because direct or not no build is perfect. I also don't care for the evo 3D, I will just hold my evo until something is worth switch. If HTC made a 4" webOS 3.0 phone I would jump ship in a heartbeat. Im just kind of bored with android :-(

You are right - no build is perfect, but at least you get the latest Android version. Either way Sense ROMs are built on top of AOSP, so most AOSP bugs are also in Sense but you also get Sense bugs on top of that.
As for Android - I'm actually looking into WP7. Mango fixes a lot of the things that prevented me from giving WP7 a try (good browser, multi-tasking). I figure I'd get the Nexus S now (hopefully next week), and then ride that until MS releases the next major update early next year. WP7 Mango looks incredibly good, and will get even better next year. I envision 2012 being MS year - Windows 8 laptop/desktop/tablet/phone/Xbox unity. I can see myself with a Macbook running Windows 8 for heavy work, a Windows 8 tablet for casual use, a Windows 8 netbook for coding, and a WP8 phone for calling and smaller on the go stuff.

This. One thing you learn about microsoft, if they want something good enough, their marketing department will take it over.
The amazing hardware acceleration on wp7 will ultimately win over a lot of people. No fragmentation, fast, easy app developments, no gay skins, updates sent by microsoft themselves etc.. will make it a def winner in the coming years. Mainly the app development. Even though java has its fair share of good programmers, there are a LOT more C# developers in the scene. Not only that, but C# has always seemed to outdo java in certain areas, such as gaming, and speed.
I also have a feeling that microsoft will have tricks up their sleeves coming w8. Some kind of integration technique between wp7 and windows.
Also looking at security wise, unless google starts taking their security and updates more seriously, people will start to see more worms and virus' on their phones, and will eventually drive away the majority of users away from android as they start to see 500$ bills showing up on their phone bill for dialing to china.

I'm keeping this until a tegra3 device.
Thanks to the OP for the interesting tidbit. I think the significant news is that instead of the usual annual product cycle, it's now semi-annual.
As some said, this isn't surprising for Android tablets. At Computex '11, Asus and others are already announcing their 2nd wave of roll-outs for tabs this year.
Current owners understandably feel some angst at the prospect of being forgotten. There are two components to after-sale support. On the Goog side, the Xoom got the 3.1 update first, as it was used to develop HC and no modification was needed. I think this will hold at least to ICS. After that, it'll probably be a DIY affair, since Goog will have a new ref device for ICS.
On the Moto side, OS support is lacking, perhaps because the OS itself is a moving target. But SD-card and 4G are major items and aren't something Moto can sweep under the carpet. They'll happen, although probably later than sooner.
Though, I wouldn't count on anything else, as developing firmware for the new toys will have higher priority. It's just business. We all know this is the bleeding edge. It's a safe bet that most Xoomers here, being early adopters, will have a new squeeze when the quad-cores and ICS drop.

I thought that too.
Why would they push out another tablet for no reason before ICS?
This makes my upcoming return decision easier.
obviously they are working on a new tablet but no way will it get released this year. If it does get released this year (which it isn't) fortunately for me I bought my 3g xoom at best buy and have the buy back program they offer, as long as best buy carries it I'm good
Yep, returning mine as well. The thing that gets me/I dont understand is...arent these significant processor changes going to alter the architecture enough to render the "Beta Tabs" obsolete? Meaning...the Xoom will have had a complete life cycle of 2 months and the SamTab of -1 month. If your products have a life span into the negatives...something is wrong with your strategy. People will stop buying Android Tabs until the CoreWar companies have gone broke enough to slow down R&D. Sucks, I just got a Nexus S and Xoom thinking Id at least get software updates for ICS, but thats starting to seem like a vain premise. Im not hating/*****ing...just rap'n about the state of this tech.

Anyway, now that the dirt has been fell from the shoulder...I just purchased the Xoom 4 days ago, so I would be kind of foolish to not return and wait. I really like the size and weight and pulled the trigger knowing I'd wait on SD (32 GB is nice on internal!) but at this point there are not only newer options coming out but they are cheaper as well. My first reply was actually more of a question, "Will a dual core device run *most* of a Quad Core OS, or are they to different for the old tech to carry on?" And interesting as well...if tablets are to one day replace other mainstream forms of daily computing, wont it eventually be a broad range of hardware running one OS anyway. I mean...I dont have an Alienware, so why would I need/expect a basement price on a bleeding edge tablet, say...5 years from now?

Difference being that their products were functional when they got them. It's been months and months and months and the SD Card and 4G update are nowhere to be found. It's disgusting. At this point, I truly do not think that either update is actually coming. The fact that they're more interested in selling their next incomplete product than fixing the mess they shoveled out initially is obscene. This is my first Motorola Android product, and after this mess I think it may be the last.

Yes, truth hurts. Go cry somewhere else. The SD slot is the most pathetic argument there is. You buy something as if they actually gave you and indication of any timeline on that feature as well as they NEVER advertise anything about that. They do however advertise 4G which is a complaint but still they didn't give any exact time frame, I believe they said 2nd quarter, which hasn't ended yet

I'm hoping they make several different Nexus-esque phones. Some would be the high end models that we would all drool over, then they could also make some vanilla phones that are mid or low end. Imagine having several different top of the line Nexus phones to choose from.. it makes me drool.

Seems like the next NEXUS phone is going to be a Motorola Nexus
that might actually be a good thing for Motorola owners, which had horrible to no support for software upgrades with each phone they buy
you are lucky to get a new firmware if ever, in the past.
So after Google taking over, i can see a lot more frequent upgrades for all future handsets, and unlocked bootloader

Technically, they're buying the Mobile arm of Motorola, Not Motorola per se. Motorola Mobility.
Technically, there is no Motorola "per se."
Motorola split into two independent companies several years ago, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility.
I guess my next phone will be a Motorola nexus. I think its actually great news. Will miss the Samsung exclusive super amoled screen, but Motorola makes some awesome hardware. Maybe now we can be rid of motoblur, get some codecs integrated, etc. I wonder how long it will take for them to design and release a new phone? I'd be surprised if they get anything out by Xmas time.

I cannot believe it...wow wow wow
I dont think the next Nexus will be a Moto Nexus - it takes time to build a new phone. Maybe the next one after N3.
I hope HTC/Samsung/LG dont feel overlooked and everything in the Android ecosystems stays in balance. I don't like the idea of competition between manufactors and GoogMoto.
Excellent! Hopefully Google will axe MotoBlur (or whatever they call it these days) and we can start seeing motorola hardware with stock android.
If the next nexus is by moto, I'll be skipping that iteration. Moto hasn't made a decent handset since the v710 or e815. Poor Google.

i think this is a good thing. first, it gives google some patent strength which they need to keep doing what they are doing with android. they did say that nothing will really change, as far as, motorola mobility is not going to become 'part' of google but will be a separate business and will license android just like everyone else, just owned by google.
but yes of course it lends an intimacy which will in turn strengthen moto handsets and hopefully push all hardware manufacturers to have to keep in step. and yes hopefully that means more stock android devices all around! i dont htink it would be in anyones best interest if goog shows favoritism to moto though, so hopefully they will not. in the end, whatever is good for android will be good for all of us
Lets not get ahead of ourselves... I'm sure a transaction of this size will require regulatory approval from the U.S. and EU... and you can BET that the anti-Android crowd will try to intervene, a la Sprint w.r.t. the T-mobile acquisition.
I'm confident it'll go through, but it's not a done deal yet.

Looks like the og galaxy s as a slider. I don't know for sure but that looks like a 4 inch screen, and for me that's too small. Even my photons screen feels small at 4.3 inches.

Assuming this is a qHD screen as the article suggests, how does that stack up against the newest Samsung screens.
Thanks to the Epic, I have grown to HATE Samsung. They have shown their true colors when it comes to software updates and I want out. The Epic development community is truly awesome, but it is a shame that we have to rely on non-paid people to make this phone what it should be. That said, I find Samsung hardware to be very nice.
i dont think i could ever get a moto phone. they are the most locked down of the three major android oems. i will prolly always buy samsung just because of the completely unlocked bootloaders and because they have a utility like odin.
@austin
That phone is pretty sexy though imo. To bad it's motorola, but it's probably the photon Q.

I disagree with you there.
I will freely admit that the delay on FroYo was terrible and ridiculous, when FroYo was rolling out the SGSII still wasn't released, and they had already promised it to us. But Gingerbread was a courtesy. They had a new generation of smartphone running around and they only anted up due to demand. And the whole complying with what Sprint wanted. I blame them. Sprint that is. So I don't think you can rag on Samsung for that one.
And if the Epic Touch 4G is any indicator, it looks like there is one dude working on these builds. They're slow. Fact. But frankly, as long as the end user knows it's being worked on, they should be happy. Especially with the speed they already have. He's doing his best I'm sure. Poor little Samsung man.
PLUS. More room for developers to step in and make the ****ty software they're stuck with better. Case and point: Epic 4G. And without the delays I wouldn't know what I know.

If it's a slider, I would consider it if the rest of the hardware is up to par once it's released (and Sprint LTE is out & delivers). Motos are very locked down, have non-removable batteries, have worse screen res and are easy to brick during root/flash process if it goes wrong. Definitely prefer Samsung here, but with no sliders on the horizon this phone warrants some consideration. On the plus side, Moto phone batteries tend to have more up-front Mah, radios are generally better and somehow the fastboot files always seem to leak and devs are able to make root stick. Moto is also very slow to update its phones but wife's Droid 2, released later than Epic got its GB update 3 months before we did and also had good dev support in forms of CM9 and AOKP.

I agree motorola is very locked down, in the photon forums people who underwent the official motorola soak update test they got permanently locked in a new way. I am unlocked fortunately and there is a good dev community so I am happy with my photon. I hope it is an improved qHD display because mine is definitely not on par with the epic's screen. I really hope they put the S4 processor in it because that would be nice. This is probably the rumored photon q, q most likely standing for qwerty. Also makes alot of sense why the epic just went EOL. We also have a very similar utility like odin its called sbf.
When my upgrade comes in december I am all over this.

Why??? The hardware could handle it, and the phone wasn't EOL. Getting software updates on phones that aren't EOL should be a no brainer. I shouldn't have to upgrade my hardware just to get new software, UNLESS the hardware can't handle the new software. These aren't FREE phones. We pay quite a bit of money for these phones. Getting some major software releases should be part of the deal.
I think the EOL thing is semantics anyway TBH. The software always lists the minimum requirements in order to run it adequately on hardware, if the hardware can support it, these manufacturers need to be supporting their customers AFTER the sale, and not just for 6 months after the sale.

This is not my problem. I should not be two levels of software behind, because they are greedy and don't want to hire the correct number of people to maintain their hardware. Why should I be happy with wayyyyyyyyyyyy subpar customer service??? It is sad what society considers "acceptable" from companies these days (customer service out of India is the first thing that comes to mind).
I am not looking for new versions of software the day that Google releases them, but if they can run on our hardware, I expect them in relatively short order.

I have been burned by Samsung TWO OUT OF TWO times now. Once on our Epic, and the other on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is STILL running Honeycomb. My complaints about Samsung stem further than just our phone.
The only reason why the Epic wasn't on the EOL list, was because it was the only high-end qwerty phone. Since Moto is making a high-end qwerty phone with ICs for sprint the Epic can r.i.p.

New one coming out soon, I would wait

No one knows for sure if there will be another 10" tablet released soon. Since Android 4.4 was announced without a new nexus 10 I'd say it's unlikely. .. but I could be wrong. You might consider getting a used one, probably lots of people selling because they are hoping for a new model, so you can probably get a good price.

The 16 Gb version has been sold out forever. The 32 is still there, but with a catch. The entire page for the current Nexus 10 is still the old format with the different versions down below. The Nexus 5 and 7 have been updated to the new page version with quick swap buttons up top next to the picture. So yes, the end of the current Nexus 10 is close. Whether or not they will be replacing it or simply getting rid of the 10 inch line is the question. I see no convincing reason for them to keep the Nexus 10 with the old page style (even if they were keeping it in production). It looks and feels different from the N5 and N7 pages and already feels outdated.
Conclusion? It will be deleted soon. Outcome? Either a new N10, or complete abandonment. Given that Google was so adamant about making tablet optimized apps available in the play store, them scrapping the flagship designed for developers to do just that and not following up would be incredibly stupid. There's going to be another one, and probably soon. We just have to wait.
I'm starting to doubt they will release a new N10 this year, I think they'll team up with Samsung again next year and release the new N10 coupled with a Exynos 6 64bit processor while releasing the first 64 bit iteration of Android somewhere in the first half of the year, they may even wait until the next N7 event to release both.
I was really hoping that they would release the new Nexus 10 this year and all of the leaks for an Asus made N10 pointed in that direction too. I had also at least hoped for a half update, like for the N7, adding LTE or more memory, but I guess Google is saving the update for next year.
N10 current edition is not likely to be discontinued by Google. You still see support ongoing for much older Nexus products, so I'm certain no worries there.
As to a new model? No "official" communications from Google ever said one would be released this year. "Everything" that has led you to this conclusion is a combination of media hype and sources with "unconfirmed" details. The displays have all been "renders" that are also not provided by Google.
Either buy a current model or wait for who knows what.
But I'm certain that there is no 2013 edition.

I don't know if I'd go that far. Just because we don't have anything at this point doesn't mean it won't be released in the next month and a half.
Considering Google didn't release a new Nexus 10 with the Nexus 5 and as we have had very few leaks, I think it's more likely now that we'll see a new Nexus 10 when the next Nexus 7 is released around June. I definitely don't think they'll release a new one in the coming weeks.
Their strategy with the Nexus 5 was to create media hype - by deliberately leaking the N5 in the kitkat video and play store they got people talking about it with incredibly little effort and cost. This was very clever and meant people were really excited and looking forward to the release. With nothing at all like this for a new Nexus 10, I doubt they're at all close to a release.

Uh they are not MAKING you have a G+ account...if you have a Gmail address you have a G+ account...DONE. The only thing that's changing is Youtube will now show your profile picture if you have one set. Get over it dude. I am sure you used your Gmail account to comment on Youtube anyway.
Also the people holding onto the glimmer of hope that there will be a 2013 N10 need to just let go. Google already announced a new N7 and an N5. With only a month and a half left in the year I really don't see them announcing an N10. There has been NOTHING from them at all hinting to this and everything, at this point, is just being pulled from people's asses. If they were to release a new one I would bet my bottom dollar that they would have done it with the N5. Just stop guys...just stop.

Yeah I'm pretty much resolved to the fact they are letting the N10 slide for this year..
But last night I was using my HP touchpad with cyangenmod and I thought, this is really the perfect 10 inch android tablet for me anyway, I don't even NEED a new tablet.
1)It's tough as nails, seriously, I have dropped this tablet from about 1m height every night when I go to sleep. It usually lands on the screen. For about two years. Nothing wrong with it, not even a scratch.
2) wireless charging. It's amazing. Seriously. Those who have never had a device that wireless charges, do not know what I'm talking about.
3) It's ten inches
4)it's powerful enough to run cyangenmod very smoothly, plays back HD movies, and browses the web flawlessly. The only draw back is 1gb of ram but it's rare I use it all up. Sometimes in WEB OS I do.
5) It has webOS. I use webOS 90% of the time, which is when I'm just browsing. It just does it better than android, hands down.
6)for the other 10% of the time I need to use an app or watch a movie, I can switch to cyangenmod.
So in summary, I don't care there is no new N10 this year, because I already have a tablet that has/does everything I want!
I'm waiting for a refresh of the Nexus 10, so I can sell/trade my original one and buy it. Any idea when it'll come out?

This post is a joke, right?
I got to agree that we will not see a new Nexus 10 this year.
The N10 was never a big seller, it is priced more towards the high end unlike the N4, N5, and N7 which are priced to SELL.
Not to mention if the second gen N10 was real, we would have seen a credible leak by now, unless this is Google's best kept hardware secret ever.
Too much negativity in this thread. We all know nothing about the proposed new Nexus 10... nothing at all. If you tell yourself otherwise you're fooling yourself.

This leads me to believe that the new Nexus tablet will be made by LG and based on the G Pad 8.3. Personally, I'd like 9" or 10", but I would buy this one.
